They know they'd be in prison so fast it would make their heads spin. If not, they know exiting their vehicles to pick a fight would result in several broken ribs after getting kicked by the cyclist's horse legs.

    Riding in the door zone at 27mph is not the best idea. To avoid getting doored and to reduce close passing use the full lane [ride in the middle/left of the oil slick] and you won't lead drivers to think that there is enough room in the lane to squeeze by you.

    • @dfiler2
      @dfiler2 8 лет назад +2

      The more experienced and safer rider is in the back filming.
      Notice that he doesn't ride in the door zone. People don't look before opening their doors after parking. Hiring a door at that speed is the same as getting hit by a car at that speed. This is why cyclists are taught to never ride in the door zone. Cyclists have died from it. They hit the door and can fall under the wheels of passing traffic.
      Similarly, the more experienced rider in the back doesn't move over for a couple seconds when there are no parked cars. Instead he maintains his line. This is safer because passing cars won't give him room to re-enter traffic and he'll have to slam on the brakes or squeeze in a couple feet of space between parked cars and cars goin 40+ mph. This is why he didn't move over. Not to be rude but because it is the safe thing to do.
      I believe that many drivers honestly are just unaware of why cyclists behave the way they do. It isn't to be rude but instead to be safe.

    • @vancouvercameracyclist5109
      @vancouvercameracyclist5109 8 лет назад +3

      +jjschepis3 That's why I think cycling training should be taken before driving. Proper infrastructure would help so much. Studies say that number one cause of a fatal collision for cyclists involving a motorized vehicle is being rear ended. With protected bike lanes, you don't have to keep checking if the car behind is going to give you one metre of clearance. I'd rather have a peaceful ride than share exciting stories of narrowly avoiding collisions. I was close to being rear ended on a quiet neighbourhood bikeway. Too bad I only got a front view. It makes me wonder if I should get a daytime running light that cars use. Cars use them on quiet roads too.

    • @beatusmongous
      @beatusmongous 8 лет назад

      I've been searching like crazy for studies that show that the number one cause of fatal collisions for cyclists involve being rear-ended by motorists, but I've found the opposite to be true. It seems that being rear-ended on a bicycle is rather rare, which would make complete sense. Even at 15mph, a cyclists is allowing the increase of reaction time to the driver, which would help prevent rear-end collisions, and many cyclists filter forward because of the belief of "you need to ride on the far right side of the road." Dooring, right hooks, left crosses, and pull-outs are much higher on the list of fatal bicycle accidents.
      However, because many states in the U.S. don't allow motorcyclists to filter forward, being rear-ended is a major cause of fatalities for motorcyclists. I support filtering for motorcyclists.

    • @beatusmongous
      @beatusmongous 8 лет назад

      I think the driving test should be much more difficult than it is. I feel people should be able to get in and out of a skid, should show they can change their oil, tires, and light bulbs, and they should have to do things like ride a bicycle and drive a big rig just so they have respect for those that use those vehicles.

      Unlike drivers, no-one depends on cyclists for basic needs... In fact if it were not for drivers, the economy would collapse over-night and we would begin to die in large numbers from lack of basics like, food, water, heat, medicine, healthcare and so on. So drivers keep far more alive than they kill and are not the enemies of the State that anti drivers claim.

    • @Waldo1122
      @Waldo1122 8 лет назад

      Gunnar Soroos What exactly did the driver of that car do wrong? The driver of that car sped around the cyclist like other cars were doing then hit the brakes, the cyclist should have been slowing down as a car sped in front of them the cyclist then scream woah multiple times as if the driver of the car has done something wrong.

    • @GunnarSoroos
      @GunnarSoroos 8 лет назад

      In many locations stopping your car with the intent to cause an accident is against the law, as well as using your car in an aggressive manner to intimidate another person. Also passing too close in an unsafe manner.
      It doesn't make sense that someone should be slowing down for someone speeding around them. But no matter, the cyclists were able to avoid the car without crashing. There's no law against exclaiming whoa when you are surprised even if you believe that the person driving the car didn't do anything wrong.

      +Matt Dungrich : Your ignorance is showing. Using the full lane is safer. It's taught by Cycling Savvy, the League of American Bicyclists, Cyclecraft, Bicycling Street Smarts, Effective Cycling and others. It's the reason that sharrows exist. People who've studied bike safety actually know this. My own 6 figure mileage experience riding on the road since 1971 backs it up, as does that of millions of cyclists who've learned from the sources I mentioned above and adhered to what they learned.

      The bottom line is going 20mph in a 35+ zone on a bike and taking a full lane because "real bicycle safety experts" say its better is stupid. Stop being arrogant, people drive cars to get places, cycling is just a glorified hobby, and all you do is hold up traffic and piss people off.
      If you want to ride a bike, be a man and do it in the mountains...

    • @billdavidson6
      @billdavidson6 8 лет назад

      +Matt Dungrich : Again, the arrogant one here is you. You think you understand this issue, but you don't.
      What do you when it's a bus or a garbage truck or a tractor or a street sweeper or a cement truck going slow in front of you? Why can't you do the same for cyclists? Actually, I know why. It's because you think that the road is your territory and that you shouldn't have to share it with cyclists. The law, CVC 21200(a) says that they have as much right to the road as motorists do. It's just as easy to deal with them as that other traffic (usually easier, actually) but you don't accept that because you think you're entitled.
      Cyclists don't hold up traffic. I drive plenty and most of the time the worst I have to deal with is moving over to pass. I find this trivially easy but then I'm not a whiny self entitled child who feels entitled to not share the road. Grow up. Sharing the road is not the burden that you pretend. You don't own the road.
      Most people riding bikes on the road are commuting, just like everyone else.

      I can't believe how arrogant cyclists are, the first guy hits the car's mirror with his hand, then when the driver reacts and stops in front of him everyone is so sure the driver is intending to cause an accident. He couldn't possibly be hitting his breaks to get the cyclist who just hit his mirror to also slow down so he could confront him. Cyclists can't fathom the idea that something might cause them to stop.

    Oh my god, nothing even happened. The car is trying to get around them and not hit the oncoming car, and the guy with the camera on his bike hit is mirror on purpose. Then the car tries to get him to stop, and the typical cyclist reaction is believe they shouldn't have to slow down or get out of the way, but rather just start yelling, "WHOAH, WHOAH, WHAT ARE YOU DOIN." Cyclists just look for reasons to fight.

      +Matt Hoefler : Your eyes apparently don't work.
      1. He clearly honked, passed and brake checked the cyclists, swerving to the right as he did it in order to cause the cyclist to crash.
      2. The cyclist didn't hit the mirror.
      3. It's not safe to ride close to parked cars. Under CVC 21202(a)(3) they had the right to use the full lane.
      4. There are sharrows on this road, indicating that cyclists can use the full lane.
      5. The cyclists were doing 27mph in a 30mph zone. That's not exactly slow. You wouldn't be making these lame excuses if a motorist was doing 27 in a 30 and some idiot did this to them. It's just cyclists because you think you're too special and important to share the road with cyclists.
      6. Crossing a double yellow is illegal. Honking for any purpose other than safe operation is illegal. Driving without due care is illegal. Driving with intent to endanger is reckless driving.
      7. You should not be driving. It's beyond your capacity for understanding.

      +billdavidson6 He does hit his mirror, that's why he pulls in front of him and break checks him. If you would spend 2 seconds googling what 'Break Check' means you'll see that the intention is not to cause an accident. However, to a cyclist who has a chip on his shoulder, I understand how it's the only thing that it could possibly mean.
      Also, if cyclists actually believe that it's not safe to ride close to parked cars.. verses moving cars... this is further proof cyclists are naturally selecting themselves out of the gene pool.

    • @bhop0073
      @bhop0073 8 лет назад +1

      +Matt Hoefler I was originally going to call you blind and say that he didn't hit the mirror, but I realized it's the first guy (camera man) that did the mirror hitting after watching the clip a few times.
      I'm a cyclist, I commute around 24 miles/day in L.A. and i've seen guys hit car mirrors before and it NEVER ends well. It doesn't help, it's not "teaching the driver a lesson"; it's just pissing them off and making them do stuff like this.
      Personally, I think both parties are to blame in this case. The Audi guy is a dick for honking the way he did. Just pass and be on your way, no reason to be a douche... but the cyclist should be the better man and just ignore him instead of hitting the mirror. That said, it did look like the audi guy tried to run the first cyclist off the road, or brake check him into the parked cars. (and brake checking, might not have the intention of causing an accident, but it easily could with a bike that stops way slower than a car.) If it turns out to be the case that he did do that on purpose, then I think he should face some kind of punishment.

      Having the right to do something doesn't mean you are just protected from people getting pissed off because your slow ass was restricting the flow of traffic (which is a citable violation). Being right doesn't make you untouchable. Legal, maybe if you get over to allow faster traffic in non passing lanes such as this one or can travel above a speed that doesn't cause danger when someone cruises up on you at 15-20 mph difference of speed. It's kinda funny that everyone talks smack about statistics of people riding on the sidewalk being unsafer, yet I have seen dozens of videos of accidents with cyclists on the roadway compared to only a few that weren't on the road.
      I always see people say drivers aren't expecting cyclists to be moving at a high rate of speed on a sidwalk. No shit. They are however going to look for pedestrians though. The cyclist shouldn't be moving at a high rate of speed *anywhere* in that environment anyway. They could easily injure pedestrians walking across the road because they aren't looking for cyclists moving at a high rate of speed hidden behind a row of cars opposite of the sidewalk. Drivers coming out of driveways on streets lined with cars have nowhere near enough of a visual warning compared to the size of most cars while pulling out. So if you want to be safe and travel at a high rate of speed take your happy ass to a bike trail or closed/private roadway without as much traffic. You are putting yourselves in that dangerous situation. You don't *have* to ride *there* . The cyclists' stubborn selfishness is putting them in danger when they are slowing down traffic every one of those cars behind them has at least one maybe more people per car that they are pissing off. You are stupid for basically trolling people in vehicles that could easily kill you with a slight swerve. Road rage is real.
      People really need to quit pushing impractical, ideological, entitled, and egotistical disruptions in systems that have naturally evolved these ways for a reason. Back when there were less cars on the road, people were less distracted by electronics, and speed limits were lower, riding on the road may have been generally safer. It seems like tendencies towards violence alone these days should be enough for anyone with any common sense to find a better place to ride. Wether you have the legal right to be there or not you would think you would choose to ride somewhere safer than along side a bunch of 3 to 4 thousand pound pieces of moving steel that are controlled by old folks with limited reaction times, phone obsessed teens, large vehicles with large blind spots, late speeders, and plenty of regular drivers that are never expecting that car in front of them to swerve out of the way of a bike in the middle of the lane going 20mph slower than the speed limit.
      You act appalled at their comments but the cyclists have all the power in the world as to wether they can ride with almost zero chance of traffic accidents. They choose to not just find somewhere else to ride. How about some personal accountability for your own safety by making wiser decisions and not putting yourself in thst situation to begin with.
      Do you think George Floyd would be dead today if he wasn't committing home invasions and counterfeiting money? Don't give stupid people the ability to end your life by being stupid yourself. If Ahmaud Aubrey wouldn't have fought with a man holding a shotgun and just went with them to prove he had nothing to do with the robberies, he'd still be alive. Were those that killed them wrong? Of course they were. Would they have even had the chance to kill them had they made better decisions in life in floyd's case and in that moment in Aubrey's case? No. They wouldn't. Floyd would be scrapping together some meager living with a minimum wage job making legal money surviving paycheck to paycheck like the rest of us or maybe died naturally because he had the Rona. Aubrey would probably be settling out of court around now in a harrassment/emotional distress lawsuit.
