      Aint that just the truth of life.. The ones invading Earth before likely thought the same thing.. Humans are hypocrites in a lot of ways.. Even those seemingly most against a practise tend to fall into the same trap ending up doing the exact thing to others that they are supposedly against and want to avoid happening to them..
      Counts for groups like Antifa and all of those.. They supposedly fight Fascism.. But how? By running around beating people up and terrorizing those opposing them like a Fascist.. By trying to fight a monster they are becoming the very same monster they hate the most.. And that is a trap most organisations and such fall in.. The ends usally justifies the means.. Especially when it comes down to survival.

And really, it holding itself barely together is Entente propaganda, A-H was actually prospering more then ever before in its history before WW1, it saw serious economic growth, and its troubles with its multinationality and the outdated monarchy were about to be solved by reforms pushed by guess who, Archduke Ferdinand himself, who was the crown prince and thus could have pushed his reforms trough if he lived. It wasn`t nearly as unstable as its enemies made it out to be, and without outside interference, what internal pressure existed could never have finished it off.

      The Greater Terran Union does remind me of the human civilization in Joel Shepards “Spiral Wars” series. The main difference is that that series begins a thousand years after Earth was invaded and subsequently rendered uninhabitable in response to human resistance (along with all inhabitants). Humanity has since then repopulated and waged a successful war of extermination against the species responsible. To this day they have standing orders that any survivors are to be killed immediately.

    Its meritocratic aspect is very similar to the Federation of Star Trek. Except that while Federation citizens are encouraged to be their best purely for the sake of bettering the world and expanding their understanding with reward being a side effect, the citizens of the Terran Union are motivated to do it for status and privilege with bettering humanity as a side effect. Both had to deal with rebuilding from a post apocalyptic disaster. In Star Trek humanity caused its own decimation and receive aid from aliens, in Invictis the disaster came from aliens and no aid ever came. Because of this difference, while one believed in utopian compassion, the other developed a very utilitarian outlook.

    • @Gustav_Kuriga

    • @darwinxavier3516
      @darwinxavier3516 6 лет назад +58

      If bettering humanity was the primary incentive for most of the citizens, they wouldn't need a tiered citizenship reputation system that included "the type of employment a person is allowed to seek and whether limitations exist on their freedom of movement, all the way down to the amount of water allotted to their showers each month". While the system may be designed to foster bettering humanity, It doesn't seem like they've reached a societal hegemony yet where people don't need to be coerced or punished using status and privilege. But this is all based on merely an overview so far. Once they reveal the day to day lives of the citizens, we can get a clearer picture of the average person's motivations.

    • @Gustav_Kuriga
      @Gustav_Kuriga 6 лет назад +19

      Darwin Xavier
      Pffft, have you even paid attention to humanity in its current state? The moment the decision is given to the populace as a whole they vote solely by how they feel, and don't actually spend any effort to logically look at an issue. For most people, it is good enough to satisfy their own needs, and only their needs. Anything after that many will see as a waste, because they feel that others should solve their own issues, regardless if those others can solve the issue themselves or if the problem that affects them even originates locally, rather than being a national problem.
      You're naively optimistic about humanity's ability to actually work for the greater good in any significant way, when time and again we've shown that when possible, people will act selfishly.

    • @williammarshal2190
      @williammarshal2190 6 лет назад

      Gustav Kuriga This makes sense looking from an evolutionary perspective. Look at chimps which will literally tear apart outsider chimps. Although that points more to tribalism, a separate issue. Though only caring about in-group is somewhat an extension of only caring about self survival. look at human history and human nature, not really convinced of these utopian ideas.

    “My people... Sons and Daughters of Terra. This much I vow: The history of these days will be written in blood. By crushing the armies of our enemy, by seizing the weapons they thought to turn against us, we are fighting for our very existence. But if there are those who would deny us peace; refuse us our rightful place in the universe, then we will unleash such terrible vengeance that generations yet unborn will cry out in anguish!
    The enemy may shatter our bodies, but they cannot break our spirit. Even now they advance on our home world, to seize by force what they cannot claim by right. They cannot imagine what awaits them.
    WE WILL SMITE THE INVADERS FROM OUR SKIES!
    Though they sweep over our lands like the snows of winter,
    never again will we bow before them; never again endure their oppression; never again endure their tyranny.
    We will strike without warning and without mercy,
    fighting as one hand,
    one heart,
    one soul.
    We will shatter their dreams and haunt their nightmares, drenching our ancestors' graves with their blood. And as our last breath tears at their lungs; as we rise again from the ruins of our cities... they will know: Terra belongs to Mankind."

    In ancient Athens,if you wanted to be considered a ''citizen'' and have the right to vote,you needed to serve first in the army as a ''hoplite'' (''οπλιτης'').And the ''Marshalls'' remind me of the roman praetors and consuls.

There does seem to be a legitimate interest in a utilitarian desire for the betterment of all mankind, not just to further the luxury of the nation's elite. While not an ideal civilisation, if it means the survival of our species I'd happily take it. No! We resisted and held on and displayed the unconquerable unbreakable spirit of Mankind. We survived, we rebuilt, we built ourselves back up from the brink of oblivion and now we learn, we grow and we study what remains of our enemy's advanced technology.
    Now we stand together as one fellowship of man united as one, ready to head out among the stars into a Golden new age, into a final frontier and maybe, just maybe, we will learn who they were and why they came and if that day ever come we will repay their crimes, their atrocities one thousand times over!

An alien artifact or a crash landed ship? (I forgot that part). Reverse-engineered it, became an interstellar civilization, & proceeds to not only expand territory but also their faith. Quodlibeta I know your joking so don't take this as me insulting you please. but I feel like some people might actually assume the Greater Terran Union is actually Fascist. Your ignoring the fact that their morals are most likely very different from ours, and that they may not even know (or even care) what fascism is. Considering they fought a brutal war against a Alien force. To me it seems like they just want to survive no matter what. Again not meant to come off as an asshole, apologies if I do.

      Wen L. Commiserates are just a tital. The political officer/office they represent have been present in many societies. The society decribed in the video is a heavily facist based one. Doesn't mean it doesn't have aspects of other societies though.

      Wen L. In the military, a "commissariat" is just a department or organization given oversight over something important. There _are_ commissariats in Communist systems, but it's not necessarily a Communist thing.
      In this case, the Greater Terran Union Commissariats seem to have inherited their name from the more common kind found in most militaries, Communist and not, in which the Commissar(ry) is in charge of finding, collecting, and distributing food and other (non-ammunition) supplies.

    Dark, atmospheric, epic and moving
    Huge in scope, menacing yet inspirational.
    I think this is a solid transition from modern (fractured) nations to one world government.
    Interesting that you pointed out sexism, racism, etc as suppressed due to pragmatic state interest and not some Star Trek ideal of utopia (depressingly your route is more realistic).
    QUESTIONS;
    What is the status of the human genetic structure; by this I mean will we hear about supersoldiers like the Halo Spartans or that have humans modified their species to survive (like Knights Of Sidonia where humans are genetically engineered to photosynthesize and cut down on the amount of food they need to eat in order to survive) or other alterations to the species like radiation tolerance.
    Why was London the first city to be rebuilt; given its location it is particularly vulnerable to flooding and tsunamis generated by mass drivers dropped into the ocean; I would have thought postwar humans would build cities away from potentially exploitable natural hazards like that.
    As for future episodes; will we get one on colonies and other worlds, satellites, etc.
    I hope in future instalments we get a better read on technology; will there be an entire episode on just the military branch where we learn about cybernetics, spaceships, ground vehicles like tanks or mecha, powered armour.
    Do hope to see more of this awesome endeavor!

    This feels like a worthy prequel to the Warhammer 40k Lore. It would make sense in the timeline (like pre-birth of the emperor), and it would make sense why ideas of innovation are no longer encouraged due to the very finite number of raw materials that were used in preparation for the invasions. Just my opinion though
