Also, if anyone wants to dive in to the genre, definitely check out the aforementioned Blasphemy, Conqueror, and Beherit, but other great bands include Revenge, Bestial Warlust, Knelt Rote, Teitanblood, Diocletian, Tetragrammacide, Profane Order, and Kapala
Teitanblood ONLY on the demo tape. Otherwise they do NOT consider themselves as / sound like (Bestial) War Metal at all. PROCLAMATION on the other hand totally fit the bill.

Black Witchery, Blasphemy, Beherit, Conqueror, and Revenge are all must-listens for someone getting into the genre.
If people want to listen to newer stuff, they can try bands like Profane Order, Weregoat, Damaar, Abysmal Lord, Archgoat, and personally Savage Necromancy has been an absolute fucking monster of a band.
Proclamation is a pretty spicy one too

One thing id add is that war metals visuals were a direct countermovement to the black metal "twink" look from norway. Hence the spikes, sunglasses, buff frames etc. Also leaving out the white paint and opting for only black paint around the eyes is very typical to war metal.
I love the rarely mentioned sound of "proto war metal" idk how to describe it. It's basically first wave black metal but more chaotic and crusty. Sarcofago is a perfect example
Unfortunately, I'm a fan of this absolute mess of a genre. It's a great one to throw on at the gym or whatever, because ZERO thinking is required to enjoy it, especially when the guitars are so muddy that you can hardly hear them

That particular Metal style is so abrasive yet so satisfying to listen to.
I love this subgenre unironically! First wave brutality, plus the scene today is still kicking, with great releases all around the globe. The Indian War Noise scene is especially noteworthy

Interesting you positioned Gravesend as war-death as opposed to war-grind. They have enough grind elements that I would honestly consider them halfway between war and grind.
Was thinking this as well- but ironically, Gravesend doesn't consider themselves deathgrind- according to their Bandcamp. They prefer black or death, as per their genre tags. Their EP 'From the Gutter / To the Grave' does seem to have tags more related to deathgrind though.

Nah man. Been there when the early shit first came out and disagreeing with someone who came 30 years late. Beherit was destinctly in the Black Metal scene. Blasphemy was War Metal or your alternative name. Beherit used thin sound, screechy vocals and so on, Blasphemy used death metal sound but chaotic song structure (or actually just shit recording technology). Total difference. What I'm saying, if you listen carefully you can hear Beherit's early songs (first full length) being quite well structured compared to Blasphemy's. Yes, I'm one of those that piss on anyone saying anything different. When the explanation differes from what really went on it's an after-construct and worth a crap in a historical context. Other old school war metal bands are Bestial Warlust and Sadistik Exekution. FU and thanks for the video! It's almost good ;).

Tho ARCHGOAT do not consider themselves as WAR METAL they are, to a certain extentc associated with that sub genre. BLACK WITCHERY & REVENGE shoulda been mentioned. And, above all, the one & only authentic War Metal band: DAMAAR from war-torn Lebannon

@@Lord_Burrito I find that FFtF does suffer a lot from this problem. IMO, war metal Is best at loud drums and vocals, while guitar is somewhat below that sound level and serves as this wall of noise (but that excludes the guitar slides and solos, those seem to be above that level).
The 2019 EP does suffer less from the issue, making it a better record Imo, but it seems very much present there.
@@4thhorseman644 I do see what you mean, and I do have a bias towards them since they were my first bestial black band/"war", but that's understandable- their vocals are definitely more quiet and I take it that's because the guitarist wanted it that way- though he's very flashy in his riffs solos and everything else, there's something really special to it that I can't put my finger on 100%. They definitely take some influence from early Beherit instrumentally and I know they're into Archgoat as well, but honestly I'm glad they didn't do what Beherit did for vox on DDtM.
Bestial Black Metal is very different from Black Metal. If the band name/logo is in red on the album cover, then is Bestial BM. If the cover is just black and white, then is BM. Proclamation for ever!!
