Power metal was my way in for metal! I was 8, 9 years old, and my cousin was presenting me Rhapsody of Fire, DragonForce and a little bit of Blind Guardian. It was very little, but I fell in love and listened to the first albums by Rhapsody very often. Later on I listened to a lot of other power metal bands, obviously, but Blind Guardian became my favorite band.
Listening to power metal always puts me in the mood to read old sword and sorcery novels and classic epic fantasy. Conan, Elric, Lord of the Rings, Belgariad, Shannara, Wheel of Time, Riftwar, Dragonlance, Drizzt, etc.
This is the reason I started to like powermetal I was already reading those books and listening to metal then I found a genre that sings these books using metal and I was hooked
Nightwish and Sonata Arctica got me into metal in the early 2000s, don't listed to it anymore that much, but still amazing to go watch some bands at a festival

In 2009 i got to see Dragonforce with original drummer, singer & bassist. Sonata Arctica was the opener. Both bands have a keyboardist, there was a keytar battle late in the set. It was epic.
Most of my friends in high school were power and thrash metal fanatics, ready to jump on my neck if I ever talked shit about either genre(I did, no fear), I appreciate these videos. Very nostalgic genres for me.
My favorite is Victorious because not only they are cheesy AF, their lyrics combines everything a 9yo think it is cool, like robot dinosaurs and space ninjas from hell that live on the dark side of the sun.

It sounds like you're counting power metal and progressive metal to be the same thing while in my opinion at least, they are fairly distinct. Symphony X would definitely be on the progressive metal side, while Manowar does not have a single progressive rock element in anything they did ever AFAIK and are instead entirely power metal.

To be fair, Rhapsody of Fire was able to compel a symphonic orchestra to be featured pretty regularly in their records. Actually, together with early Nightwish they had some pretty cool influence of classically trained, almost operatic vocal, to the point where together with Therion and Epica they're labeled as symphonic metal within their genres. Also, the prime example of extremely goofy but catchy power metal band would be Gloryhammer, I think that due to their references specifically to Rhapsody's songs they're even goofier than Alestorm. I'm pretty surprised power metal is considered niche, as I've heard it being insulted because of it supposedly being one of the more mainstream genres, and getting "too pop-y".
Reminds me of a line from Gumball: "Metal Heads are just nerds who like to wear leather." And that became very apparent when i went to my first Sabaton concert. Was a blast :D

Great fun and I say that as a long-time listener to the genre... just look at bands like "All for Metal" and you are aware they willingly exists as an almost self-parody while playing awesome music, while other like "Blind Guardian" have essentially, by sheer skill and complexity, moved more into a crossover area with prog metal. On little knock here: this ironically described what the *American* power metal scene is... in Europe it's one of the metal genres closest to mainstream... cue late 30s/ early 40s in black suits in concerts (that would be me) alongside younger blokes and gals as well as, and I kid you not, groups of 70+ blokes as witnessed by yours truly just under a year ago🤣. Great fun and I say that as a long-time listener to the genre... just look at bands like "All for Metal" and you are aware they willingly exists as an almost self-parody while playing awesome music, while other like "Blind Guardian" have essentially, by sheer skill and complexity, moved more into a crossover area with prog metal.
On little knock here: this ironically described what the *American* power metal scene is... in Europe it's one of the metal genres closest to mainstream... cue late 30s/ early 40s in black suits in concerts (that would be me) alongside younger blokes and gals as well as, and I kid you not, groups of 70+ blokes as witnessed by yours truly just under a year ago🤣.
And we all are boring run-of-the-mill blokes.
