I often wonder if this is why the writers of ATLA never FULLY address the Genocide of the Air Nomads. Even though it really should've if only so that Aang's characterization could've been a bit better written, because they only ever brought it up when it was convenient for the plot. It's always simply easier to IMAGINE something horrible happening...but to talk about it openly? Whole other can of worms. It's why I'm so worried about the live action show actually SHOWING it. It cannot be Helm's Deep or the Battle for the Wall in Game of Thrones. You can have your epic camera shots, the cool music, the nice action. But the tone needs be right. The Nomads are fighting for their life. The Fire Nation soldiers are just fighting.

    • @SEAZNDragon
      @SEAZNDragon 5 месяцев назад +17

Remember at the end of the day ATLA is a kid's cartoon, a medium legendarily skittish to even show blood. So a nuts and bolts run down of the genocide was out of the question. But I definitely think this is a case where less is more and where the focus should actually be. Remember Ang was the last survivor of the Air Nomads and through the series he has a good bit of survivor's guilt made worse by his status as the Avatar and knowing he could have helped.
I think two clips do show the severity of the genocide very well. First was when Ang goes back to his monastery and sees the skeleton of the abbot out in the open. The genocide left no Air Nomads to bury the bodies and the Fire Nation didn't care to even throw them in a pit. Second was when Ang was in the Fire Nation class and found the Fire Nation rewrote history to portray the pacificist Air Nomads as warmongers to justify the genocide. There was no one to counter the narrative except for Ang, the last Air Nomad.

The sheer enormity of the damage done by humanity to itself and to its home is too much for most people to reckon with willingly. If a writer or artist chooses to engage with it and express it through a work of their choosing, the belief is that it will resonate with the recipient and make a connection through sharing of ideas of humanity and nature.

I really felt the Dunning Krueger transition from despair to 'we're kinda okay, sometimes, in some ways'. I think in many ways, I've found meaning in wondering and questioning both the absurdity and wonder of it all, and the fact that by some crazy happenstance I'm able to do that all. It's a bit of a zoom out that we're all faced with the same kind of terrible and beautiful nature of existence. Thanks for speaking on this topic!

I can relate it's always terrible to be aware of the worst aspects of human culture and constructs. It's ironic that we as a whole do more harm to one another than actual outside forces like nature, etc. The best we can do is live each day. It sucks but it's better than nothing.

I just finished watching Sailor Moon and it always leaves me with a reminder that we have the capability of kindness amongst cruelty, and to always hold on to hope. When I’m feeling despair for the state of the world that serves as my comfort. That and Lord of the Rings. Like Sam says, folks in those stories keep going because they were holding on to the fact that the good in the world is worth fighting for. But… for me simply spreading awareness is not good enough. In the same, do we all have the courage to do what is right and throw the world into chaos so it can come back into order? The things that keep one up at night😅

The best way I can describe how I see the world (not necessarily humanity though) is the song Landmine by Polaris. It talks about is how the world doesn't give a flying crap about you. And while the song screams in anger, it also touches on the humility that comes with that realization, and how that can help you better resonate with some of the people around you. Empathy cannot be achieved while running away from pain, instead, you have to embrace and accept it, even it sucks and is unfair. If there's one good thing I've gotten out of my mental struggles, it's empathy. And while my life feels completely worthless to me, I can at least rest assured knowing it might mean something to someone else.

Capitalism has been in existence for a mere FRACTION of our time on this Earth. To judge humanity by the choices they're forced to make by the fascist structures forced upon it is super self-defeating. Communism is about ending wars, ending racism, ending oppression, ending fascism, equal rights, ending poverty, ending hunger, the list goes on. There’s nothing about communism that’s about genocide other than ending it and preventing it from happening. Why do you think all communist parties the world over condemn Israel’s actions? no is the simple answer to most of those things, didn't expect spiralling existentialism today but sure.
I think it's better to visualize humans as a colony of ants. one ant can't do much to change how the colony works, it's only when a bigger group of ants are lead to do something that change can happen, good or bad. think of a group like a company or those working at a factory. most of these people don't really think about if what they're doing is making the world worse bc they just want to live their damn lives, put food on the table and maybe have some time to have fun. it's when you get to the people planning all of this at the top that you find someone who knows what their actions does to the world.
I think humanity is only a virus when we do more harm than good, like we are right now and like how termites are pests only when they're in your house, but that's not the fault of the individual. it's the fault of the entire colony. simplified.

So if you and me and nobody else needs to be told - and yet our most exalted learning says it cannot and never has existed - how is it that we know that it isn't? How do we know about something with such certainty that we and nobody in recorded history has ever experienced? You can dismiss it. You can ignore it. But you cannot avoid it. The subsequent plot follows his journey as he learns to accept and even cherish life despite this. I hope to teach people through my writing how even cruel and tragic unfairness and suffering can be things that we can learn from and appriciate as a part of the human experience, as challenges we can at least try to overcome, if only by choosing to continue living, to continue getting up in the morning and existing without giving into despair. Don't give up, because even if I can't guarantee things are going to get better, I know for certain that they never will if you don't give them the chance.

is angry and spiteful but also hopeful couse after all is done is up to everybody to rebuild using the knowledge we gathered,
being a minority in a world that no longer sees you as a person, were your dead is meaningless and people hate you for no reason other than what you represent in their mind, (insecurity, fear, self loathing), where your culture is sold as commodity, and your person hood is stripped down to a joke, the way I cope is by playing games like darksouls where the dead empire becomes a place where I get to roll my eyes at the kings and gods for letting their own self destruction get the better of them, or games like cyberpunk where Im just scrapping by to escape the hellhole i put myself in trying to play a game that was rigged from the start, or hell games like lethal company where the friends and coworkers we have become more valuable than the scrap we get to collect for a unface entity to big for our minds to comprehend.

I am a materialist living in russia right now.
I accepted the lack of meaning in the world, fully embracing the cold horror of unintentionality and lack of self awarness of humanity.
As a pacifist i can't bear the thought of what my country is doing. As a pacifist I can't hold myself from not feeling pain for humanity's constant self Devouring and unaware damages to the planet, animals and etc.
It's not empty words, just google the searches.
Scientists just understood that rhinos are more important for the environment than elephants? Oops, we've just killed absolute most of it.
    Whales?
    Wolfs?
    Birds?
Thousands of species, hundreds of polutions, one to blame.
And the most sad thing is, i do understand that any justice is subjective, it's just an imperfect ways for our little brains to see reasoning for the world. Just as our entire world-view and etc.
We are ultimately, the bane of our hope and beliefs.
So lets cry together. Let's communicate more. Let's embrace the lack of meaning, and subjectivity of our brains and work our way from here.
I want to believe that we can make us whole more empathetic.
So have a good day. Smile even if it hurts. And lets be better together.

Not really worth it, if you ask me.

I think a lot of anti-humanity beliefs come from the same place as hyper-nostalgia for 'the good old days': lack of perspective.
When we were kids, we envisioned the world as great but, when we grew older, we realized the world was not great. On a subconscious level, we feel robbed of that good world we always imagined so we push back against it. Some blame it on the modern world and long for '50s Americana, some blame it on socialism and long for capitalism, some on capitalism and long for socialism, and some blame it on technology and long for a return to nature. Some blame it on humanity itself and long for a utopia free from the evils of us.
Truth is, the world was never as good as we thought it was; this is all it ever was even when we were children and even in whatever time/place we imagined was best. There is no ideal state of the world and the grass was not actually greener in another time/place. We are longing for something than never existed, does not exist, and may never exist. For some of us, we are even blaming ourselves for not doing enough to make this nonexistent world a reality.
Does that make humanity evil? No, it makes humanity human. We are the good and the bad, the genocides and the food drives, the man hitting his wife and the woman caring for her aging mother, the Andrew Tates and Timothy Hicksons. We always were and always will be. The first step towards changing the world is accepting that change isn't a return to something better that we used to be, but a shift towards something better than we have been.
As to whether you have done enough to make that change, there is only one question worth asking: have you left the world a better place than you found it? If yes, then you have done enough. Doing more is just icing on the cake.

I’m probably just a bad person, but none of this gets to me. I do everything I can to make the lives of those around me better and leave spaces better than so found them, but I have no power to stop war or make the powers that be to stop fucking up the planet, so why freak out about it? Ehh.

It’s either or with you why can’t you be melancholy and have wisdom why can’t you be melancholy and pursue the actual answer the thing is the people with the following that needs to make a change don’t and the people like you and I who would make a change don’t have the following yet I plan on attaining my following through things set more in stone than social media change your local government. That’s the bare minimum focus on your local government. It starts from the ground up that’s how democracy works you focus on big things when all you can do as little things at the moment focus on your local government.

I had a very different experience when i read Two Robots. (Negative review incoming):
I did not like it because the message had no hope in it, unlike some other science fiction i have read.
You claim that Two Robots has a hopeful message, but the two robots run out of power, they discover the worst part of what being humanity means, the one literally shoots his friend to death, then he gets lost and will die himself from battery drain.
This story to me was about the beauty possible, and how humankind will always choose the worst option. Being more like us means being more confused, more violent, more lost, and less able to help each other.
Your story was technically expert level and utterly well written, and also hopeless.
There was no positive way anyone in that story transcended their circumstances or their programming. And I don't feel the need to be reminded how awful everything is.

I don't relate to this anti-humanity sentiment at all. I feel like people get a warped view of the world because the news and social media shows a lot more bad stuff than good stuff. But if you look at the people around you in your life, you realise most people are okay.

Sorry friend but I look at directly in the eyes and I called us all a bunch of smart monkeys at the end of the day. I don’t sugarcoat it you’re stuck between defending your own humanity and picking apart it’s flaws. Focus on the flaws and you will find an answer more than defending, the parts of yourself that are wrong

You aren’t thinking big enough you have a platform you’re clearly pursuing extra income instead of thinking, existentially think about ways you can apply that cash to what really matters creating homes in the gratefulness that the people will give you build a platform build a following and those waves of people in your following is how you make true change not by throwing your drop of water in an ocean create a wave and maybe just maybe the momentum will form a tsunami

I'm familiar with Pinker's arguments. They seem like copium to me. Try going to a certain region in the middle east, a certain region in eastern europe, a certain region in china, a certain region in myanmar, hell just go to your nearest city's downtown area, and you can witness all the things about modern injustice and power that you and your family and friends and community has to be grateful for.

There is a wave of individuals who lack meaning, or the true understanding of it, so they create their own and think that’s what everyone else does, and when you get the masses to do such that is what everyone else does, and it leaves those who decide for a true meaning in the dust and create say landslide of foolishness that is irreparable to a society because it always moves forward, not backwards, and you can convince no self proclaimed Wiseman that he is wrong😮‍💨🤓🥼🌙 the night closes in as the fools closes their eyes
