I grew up with parents that divorced before I was able to conjure memories. So my life was split in two. I ended up in an abusive household on one end, and was extremely introverted half of the week and very energetic and extroverted the other half. (Back of class burning tables vs hanging with the popular kids was a literal change between days)
I choose to travel to NZ for a year after high school to take a good look at what parts of both "me's" I likedand forged myself a new person during my hiking and travelling.
Came out pretty well. The Peregrine Falcon and the Firecrest are my two favourite birds.

11 years ago I met a very little boy, barely minutes out of the womb. His mother was in surgery and in danger, and I wanted to panic, to cry, to worry. But this little boy was there, and he only had me to care for him. And depending on what was happening a few rooms further, that could last a long while. So I held on, and I sword to care for that boy first and foremost. Which was so weird, because I was always so awkward being in the spotlight, especially around children.
Now, his mother, me and him are having a relaxing weekend, and I know to the deepest of my core that helping young minds be happy and self-confident is who I am. It spread to other children, to my friends and colleagues. I help people find their own answers.
Also, the owl. They're such a hoot.

Fun fact, penguins are extinct. The original penguin was the great awk which went extinct in the 1800’s, European explorers just called a bunch of other aquatic black and white birds penguins but they are only distantly related to the original penguin. It’s like how panda used to only refer to the red panda and then someone decided to name a bear the great panda despite them only being vaguely related.

I grew up in a more rural part of Germany and was always kind of the odd one out amongst the other kids my age and even my family. I had interests that they found strange and for some reason I did not adopt the same dialect, so I even talked differently. When I was in school, I was rather quiet because I felt like no one was interested in the same things I was. When I got to university that changed and I found a lot of people that shared the same interests, which was really amazing to me. Sure, some things that are important parts of my life might have come into my life because of external circumstances, but I think that's also kind of beautiful. As long as it feels right and makes you happy, I think it is worth it.
So, that was rather corny. For everyone how made it to the end of this comment, my favorite bird is the jackdaw. Love those little black feathered buggers. ❤

_A race against time on the search for the most authentic person of ourself._
Its something I'll never say myself (that's a far too complex sentence for me), nor will I ever be to quote it to express my feelings.
But noy does it feel true. Especially with the feelings of having missed things when I was at school, at the time I didn't do things not because I didn't want to, but because I didn't feel brave enough to step out of my comfort zone to experience something new. I missed so many amazing oportunities and now I watch the time move on with me thinking about the past, with no possibility to choose the better choice.
Thanks for finding the words I never was able to find to express my feelings.
That and the Raven... there are a bunch near where I live and they always look at me like I am a puzzle to them. That and they can immitate peoples voices, are one of the smartest birds and overall just look cool...

As a biology student, the concept of whether who we are is based on nature vs. nurture comes up a lot. I mean, several times in several of my classes, we’ve had class period long discussions and debates on this topic, and we can never come up with anything beyond that the answer is likely a mixture between the two. We may be genetically predisposed to certain things and behaviors, but that does not determine our fate, we are also capable of making choices.
I’ve also been reading a books series lately, the first book is The Queen’s Thief, by Megan Whaler Turner, and I highly recommend it if you have time. A quick thing from one of the later books (no spoiler), is that two characters talk about how when it comes to them making decisions related to prophecies relayed to them by their gods, it’s not a thing of the gods are making the decisions for them, it’s just that the gods know them so well they can determine what they will say and do. I’m not entirely sure if bringing this book up is actually related to what was said in the video, but it came to mind and I wanted to put it down.
My favorite bird? I love penguins, b/c they will waddle up to researchers with no fear. I also love crows and ravens, b/c they are spooky and highly intelligent and they don’t get enough love. I also love owls, especially barn owls, they’ve just always have had a place in my heart.

I feel like identity is the outcome of circumstance and choice. You are the product of your circumstances, like evolutionary programming, culture, home life, being born rich or born poor, etc. But who you are changes based on what choices you made/make. However, the choices you make are heavily influenced by the circumstances you are currently in or have experienced in the past.
That's why I think if you add up the circumstances and the choices you make, that's how you get who you are.
Also, my favorite birds are crows because I like Itachi and because I once saw a crow instigate a fight between two cats and then sit and watch the chaos he created.

A race against time, i agree! When i was younger i felt more in control of who I wanted to be in a way. At least I thought I had that control. The older I get the more I realize how much my environment controls my life and consequentially the person I am, but it’s made me appreciate love, community, life as a whole and our planet much more. I do think we’re constantly evolving and we need new experiences for that, otherwise we become stagnant.

“Sure. I know me. Know me pretty damn well. But that’s the thing. 'Who you are' is a movin’ target, one sittin’ way on out on the horizon. Don’t matter how fast ya run; you’ll never get there. Oh, you’ll get close. Over and over again. And that’s the point. Goal’s not to get there, it’s to keep on strivin’, keep runnin’, keep listenin’ to that voice inside that says go.”

I think that is one of the cool things about christianity. Obviously you’re identity grows continually forever shaped by as you said, your ancestors, the water you swim in and all that. But with Christianity there’s parts of your identity that you always have that you know you can always rely on no matter how much change. You are always an adopted child of God, you are always his servant, You are always his soldier. There are parts of your identity that are forever attached to you, that you can hold onto in the dark moments, where you don’t know who you are, it’s extremely comforting. I thank God every day that he gave me the identity of His.

I found this perspective to take away a bit of the burden I've been feeling. In the last 10 years I've gotten a divorce, left the religion I once held onto dearly, awoke to the fact that my family is not closely knit like I'd believed my whole life, and quit the job I'd moved two timezones for. With each loss I more and more realized that all of the decisions I'd made were either what someone else wanted of me, looking for a place where people seemed to want me, or a result of me not saying no since I never developed a sense of self. It was and is still painful trying to find who I was, am, and want to be.

Pied Wagtails are just the cutest little fuckers with their skittering run, bobbing tail feathers (their namesake), and very "Flappy Bird" style of flying - drawing little bouncing arcs in the sky as they climb and fall
My other favourite birds are jays - the black sheep of the british Corvid family with beautiful tan feathers and blue stripes on their wings. Deadly smart and surprisingly uncommonly spotted compared to their emo and goth cousins, I get a little giddy with excitement when I spot one being an absolute menace to the local wildlife

It's been just over a decade since I started, and it feels like I'm finally, finally able to revisit some of the things from my childhood that I used to love and bring them back into my life in a healthy context.

According to psychological science, in part made by comparing identical twins who were adopted by different families after birth, we become more and more ourselves as we age. Environment is not unimportant, but the things in it that affect us the most in the long term say more about who we are at our core than anything else.
Well, this is atleast what I they claimed in a very well made documentary I saw on the subject. The identical twin example they brought up, a pair of brothers who did not learn of each others existence until late adulthood, showed that they had made very similar life choices and shared the same interests. Both had been owners of a gym and both were into sports, if supporters of different teams.

Idk what bird i like the most, NZ has so many seabirds like toroa (albatross) and penguins and parrots and unique birds who don’t fly, the pīwakawaka has always been special however, maybe bcuz they’re one of few natives who didn’t decline due to colonisation so we maintained our relationship and following the passing of my great grandmother and then my koro we would see them in the fantails so pīwakawaka are regarded by my family as kaitiaki

My favorite bird is either the Peregrine Falcon or the Robin. I honestly love all birds, but yes, my account name does state that my favorite animal is indeed the Elk/Wapiti. On the subject of life's endless becoming, however, I have a lot to say but I'll choose my relationship with my religion to elaborate on: I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, (AKA LDS/Mormon). My relationship with my faith has been a very complicated one. On one hand, it protects me, guides me, humbles me, and helps me learn to love and serve others; but on the other hand, it's fueled a lot of my issues in the past, has definitely been used by some as an excuse to hurt others, and is full of misconceptions and diverse interpretations. While I've been sorting myself out to go on a mission, I've learned some very important lessons that really cleared somethings up about my faith, although I know they can be applied to life in general. One of the most important lessons is learning to accept that above all, God wants me (and every other person in the world) to be happy, and that that means being the best but also the truest version of myself (ourselves). Some religious people like to preach in a literal sense that you should "deny yourself," that you should put others before you at all costs, and that God isn't interested in your petty self-help, because that makes you selfish... so I tried to be as selfless as I possibly could, putting myself down to prop everyone up, and continued until I wanted to end it all because my life felt so meaningless to me. It took a while, but I eventually came to realize the truth about God's intentions, at least as taught in my religion: first off, He doesn't expect me to be perfect, otherwise Christ wouldn't have come down to suffer for my sins; He created me to be me... yes, to be like Him also, but not exactly Himself or anyone else; He wants me to succeed and simply isn't the one who sets me up for failure; and that He is reasonable, and doesn't expect me to kill myself for Him or anyone else. What I found is that in contrast to what a lot of people like to preach, me and my happiness may not be all that matters, but I do matter nonetheless. I shouldn't hate myself for simply wanting to reap happiness out of my own life, and I can't expect those I love to be happy while they watch me suffer trying to live up to the expectations of others. I also can't love my neighbor as myself if I treat myself like garbage all the time. I don't care what anyone says, things just don't work that way.
Sorry if I got too preachy, but I really feel passionately about this because I feel it's something that really drives some people away from religion and I understand why. To be clear though, neither my faith or any other specific religion I know of actually teaches what I've singled out as problematic (although I'm sure they're out there), but it's more that these are common misconceptions that some religious people take to heart and others use to justify judging each other. Let it be known that I'm not an expert, and if you disagree with me that's valid, because we all experience life differently. If you're still reading this, I hope you got something out of my spill of words and if not, I'm sorry. I do hope this helps someone though like it helped me. Just remember that your life is yours and that you matter no less than anyone else :)

Three years ago I discovered I've been asexual this entire time! I'm SOOO glad I found it out!!!! And just last year I also realized I'm aromantic, and that's been fantastic because I don't have to force myself to like anyone! These revelations have clarified so much of my childhood-- "oh, that memory was me being ace without knowing!" etc. It's opened my eyes to how much meaningless sex is in movies, and why asexual representation in movies, books, and all media is vital! I LOVE being ace and aro!!!! It's filled me with pride! I'm a sex-repulsed ace,and proud of it!!! And Good Omens Season 2 solidified months of guessing that i was aro! My favorite bird is a mourning dove!! their call reminds me of peacefull childhood days!

I mean. Aotearoa did have predators before humans introduced mammals like rats and dogs and the like. It's just the native predators are birds of prey, like the Ruru (morepork owl), the Karearea (nz falcon) and the extinct Pouakai (haast's eagle). The best way to deal with aerial predators is to freeze and let your camouflage hide you from eyes in the sky, so most of Aotearoa's wildlife will freeze when threatened, and against a mammalian predator which hunts by scent this does not work so well.
Also my favourite bird is Devincezia, a terror bird from Miocene Argentina. my favourite living bird is the Red Legged Seriema, if you think that extinct ones don't count. Ok thank you :)

Fun fact: if you’re adopted, you get to go through the deconstruction of identity process starting as a CHILD 😅
(I do not speak for all adoptees pls don’t come for me)
But yeah, I was adopted at a very young age and into a family that was not of the same ethnicity as I was born into. So I literally was having these sorts of questions by the time I could even slightly comprehend the idea of adoption. How much of me was from my biological parents? How different would I be had I not been adopted, or been adopted into a different family? Classic “Nature vs Nurture” stuff at the ripe old age of five XD
And it didn’t stop there, as I grew up and learned more about myself, it was just one identity crisis after another. I found out I’m autistic and have ADHD, I am also asexual- among a dozen other things I’m still kinda figuring out. Life never really stopped giving me identity stuff to chew on and there’ve been lots of ups and downs, but honestly I’m almost used to it by now. I’ve gotten some stuff figured out, others not as much, and I don’t think that ever really stops.
Best of luck to everyone on their identity journeys, and my favorite bird is the red tailed hawk ☺️

The bowerbird - a small dark which build intricate and actually quite nice looking nests to attract their mate then preform a dance for them. It is a really intresting mating ritual in itself, and i also particularly like them because they have a diverse set of phenotypes which give them a very large variety of colours and patterns of their feathers. They are the performance artisits of the natural world. Who said art wasnt useful for survivial?

Identity doesn’t matter. The average person will never see or understand the deepest parts of you. What matters is sharing passions with those who will listen. What matters most is just being a good person. People don’t care who you are if you held a door open, they’re just grateful.
