Blue: I will not make another Venice video until I have written a book about it. Writes said book and now will only make Venice videos
And we are here for it
As i said on one of their previous videos, truly a madlad
I mean if you have done enough research to write a book about it you might as well write a book about it. His next book should be about the domes of History.
When he said that, he had probably already written the book so was really setting himself up with a backlog of Venice topics ready to go I’m sure 😅
All aboard!
Knowing Blue, he'll still gush about domes in his book about Venice
It better be a book about nothing but domes
If there is not at least one scene of just pure dome, I will be disappointed.
Nah. He’ll just write a sequel: The Veneziad 2: Duomos for Days.
Oh, a 110% he will. There is no doubt about it.😊
As George R. R. Martin writes six page descriptions of every meal, Blue will write six stanza descriptions of every dome.
8:16 "Wake me up when anybody else is able to match the combo of a floating city, an unparalleled governance, and extraordinary religious prestige."
Tenochtitlan?
Literally the first thing that came to my mind
My thought too!
They also have sweet branding in that eagle eating the snake upon a cactus!
At least Venice just robs things, they kidnaped boatloads off people to put on a show with their murder and eviceration

"Don't worry, I won't make any more Venice videos until I can write a book on it... *SURPRISE, I'VE ACTUALLY GOT A BOOK THAT HAS BEEN IN DEVELOPMENT FOR 7 YEARS!"*
We've been tricked, we've been backstabbed, and we've been, quite possibly, bamboozled.
As the Venetians would...
We've been smeckldoorfed!
that was the biggest plot twist to me 😂 did not know anything about this, and was very surprised when he pullled it out of his sleeve this shortly after!
Bambluezled
It would seem so, Sarge

The prank:

Venice in any moment of history: steal something
Me: " *THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS* "
Spoiler alert: they _will_ keep getting away with it
They also proudly display it for everyone to see 😂
I love that, as much as Blue loves Venice, he also knows full well that a LOT of their history, and history in general, is probably somewhat sanitized and he's not going to take what is probably ancient propaganda at face value.
Yes, this! Agreed! 😁
I think my favorite part of that propaganda is that it very solidly confirms that the Venetians had long-standing and well-developed personal contacts in Alexandria and were heavily associated with the slave trade there. Muslim Alexandria being a large purchaser of slaves.
Blown off course indeed.
"Guy with spear is no fewer than FOUR SAINTS!!!!!" 🤣
Save now: Statue of four saints in one.
You could say he was a religious, saintre
As an Orientation Orthodox Christian, I can say they are waaaayy more than just 4. Basically any saint that was a Roman soldier is depicted with a spear of some kind, and maybe a shield or a horse. Off the top of my head, I can think of Philopateer Mercurius, St. Abaskhairon, and mostly Greek icons of St. Mena.
wait, wait, wait... "the smell of an eight-century old corpse"? The guy should have been dry bones by then, for centuries!
Oh no. Did Blue just imply, that those bones probably weren't the bones of the guy who wrote a part of the bible and/or an apostle, but a fake? How could he!
If my art history knowledge is correct, many saints were said to have "life-like" looking remains hundreds of years after their deaths. In fact, this resistance to the natural process of decay was frequently cited as a miracle in the canonization process, making it an important piece of evidence supporting the body's claim to sainthood. Essentially the logic was: this martyr must be saintly, because how else would their dead body look so undead, and the body must be the true remains of said saint, because how else would it look so undead. Kind of circular logic but 🤷♂
@@colinneagle4495 Also, many saint's corpses were said to have the smell of flowers for decades to centuries after death. So.... Maybe the heady floral smell was giving them away?
@@colinneagle4495
Oh, yes, I'm aware of these beliefs; they're also part of the Orthodox tradition (I'm Greek). In any case, it's a virtual certainty that any given relic was just some random bones of some random guy, and by the way the faithful would be unlikely to be shaken in their faith, even if they knew that to be the case. I recommend you read Umberto Eco's _Baudolino_ for a hearty laugh regarding fake relics and pious fraud 😛
Call it artistic license. Smuggling a smelly corpse out of Alexandria is far more impressive than smuggling some easily concealable bones.
And Venice never stole anything again...
4 bronze horses in Constantinople: 😬
and the body of Saint Nicholas. Yes, that one. The one we know as Santa Claus.
On a darker note: The life savings of Venetian Jews during WW2
@@peterwindhorst5775 If... St. Nick is in Venice, does that mean the elves are... Italian?
@@hypotheticalaxolotl it would explain the pointed shoes and the love of pasta?
@@peterwindhorst5775 So there was an actual kidnapping of Santa Claus.
I opened the kickstarter and turned to my wife to ask, "Yes/No?" To which she replied, "It is adorable that you think I haven't already done that."
"Vembis does crime." Sounds like a good title for a chapter in a book about Medieval Italy.
Seems like the Venecians had a thing for Necrostealia
Kleptonecrocorpus
If Blue ever made a video about Venice’s historical rival Genoa I’m convinced it would just turn into a diss track as the man lives or dies Venice🤣
Dude about to drop more bars than Eminem.
Gonna make Meet the Grahams look like a joke
So much Venice in one week
He did say at one point he wouldn't "talk about Venice again until he knew enough to write a book". And now that he's put his money where his mouth is and actually wrote a book about it, the floodgates are effectively open.
*VEMBIS*

Oh I LOVE Rogue one! By far the best that Disney Star Wars has produced!

Theft of sainty relics was so common it got a name, "furta sacra". The middle ages were wild.

Blue: "I will not make another video on Venice until I have learned enough to write a book on it."
Also Blue: has been working on writing a book on it for seven years
Can’t wait for the next Venice video where he reveals that the body in the Basilica di San Marco is very likely not the body of St. Mark. There was a flood in Venice (shocker) that actually caused significant damage to the basilica and the body was lost for a bit. The legend is that the arm of St. Mark reached out from the water to help people find the body and that is the body they put back into the tomb. Since the stealing of the body was all about propaganda, political and religious prestige, the story about whose body is actually in the tomb changes to fit the political fancy of the situation. Some claim there were two bodies stolen from Alexandria and put in the tomb. One is St. Mark and the other is Alexander the Great. It’s pretty likely that whoever body is in there is neither of those people.
*In Nathan Ford's voice*: Let's go steal us a saint
Parker: [smiles mischievously] So...many.. lions...
The Saintly bones job
I understoood that reference.
Damn it Hartisimo!
I feel like Sterling read The Prince...
Dear god his Vembis obsession is now fully unbridled
Historys biggest hijink is red denying me the BACCHAE for so long! please blueeee tell red to do the bacchae!!!
Yeah, that would be pretty great!
@@bryanreed8206 i have made a comment on every post they make, red senpai notice meeee
red said she would do a bacchae video all the way back during the dionysus video. she lightly covers the myth there, but matthias warnes on youtube has a great lecture on dionysus and there is an excellent lecture discussing the bacchae as literaure on youtube. Its a play ,that in scholars like dr dennis mcdonald, which correlates to the characterizing of jesus in the gospels and many other links. i personally believe there was something to do with wine cults influencing alot of the religions during the "axial age"
Venice making their bones by stealing the bones of a saint really hit the Mark.

Virgil was Ancient Era's #1 bro. He took Dante Alligheri through the entire hell with his own hands just to make him meet again the woman he completely simped for despite only seeing her twice in his life. Get a pal like Virgil and your life will be fulfilled 😎
"Let's steal a saint" is Mel Brooks levels of shenaniganarry.
Blue's videos inspired me to build an entire merchant-focused dnd campaign based around Venice and Genoa. MY players say it's the most fun setting they have ever played in, so big thank you for the inspiration! And I look forward to the book!
Gray will have words about the "best flag" comment.
ROUND ONE
FIGHT!
In all fairness, the red and gold is iconic, so pretty recognizable, and the only major flaw is the words, which don't even show up on the war flag, so not all too bad by Gray's standards, and considering Mark was the entirety of Venice's identity, its pretty representative...
"This summer get the body you want!"
Venetians:
So much Vembis in one week I love it
There is a theory that the remains of st mark was Alexander the Great.
But tbh its mostly likely some poor Schmucks bones that is now “mark”
Be easy to DNA test now
@@BJGvideosonly if we have other DNA to compare to, and since we don't have any info on the real Mark and his relatives or their possible DNA, well....
@@zenfrodo Should give us stuff like era, ethnicity, etc
Surely, this Vembis phase Blue is doing to promote his book will turn into a full multi-part historical breakdown of the city that, once stitched together, will rival the length of his full Rome documentary if I believe hard enough.
Ten Commandments:
Thou shall not steal
Venice:
Gonna pretend I didn't read that
Yup, and that's why Jesus died.
Us Humans really suck sometimes.
You can't fool me, Blue! I know you're a real 3d person and not a cartoon character!
YOU'RE NOT EVEN BLUE, YOU HACK FRAUD!
...
Got your book on pre-order, cant wait!
Blue has declared this the year of Lagoon town and I love it! 💙💙💙😁
With a title like that I'm now really wishing we had an anthology comedy series based on historical hijinks. :<
All these stories are rad.
"Turns out I can do more than shitpost about domes" And yet, I'm pretty sure the book will contain shitposts about domes
~2:36 Random thing I found interesting, the way the mane of the winged lion depicted in that statue/relief runs all the way down its belly and behind its front limbs makes it very identifiable as a Barbary/Atlas lion, part of a now extinct population of Asiatic lions native to North Africa! I just found that kinda neat lol, little bit of zoological history with your regular history
I just noticed the "V" crest you use for venice looks like the horns of Nicol Bolas and now I can't unsee it. Help!
I think that to love something and still loudly call it out on all its weaknesses is very healthy attitude especially to history.
This whole series of events would make a great DnD campaign!
With the DM being a dungeon meshi fan so he included the winged lion 😏
When the pen is sharper than the sword.
So you stab with it.
I thought it was going to be Saint Nicholas because I knew his bones got stolen at some point. But I should’ve known better. That’d be a Christmas video
Considering Mark canonically streaked through the garden of gethsemane after getting his clothes torn off by Roman soldiers (Mark 14:51-52, not joking) I think he’s a big fan of his bones being stolen
Edit: Congrats Gregory Blue Stewart on your book!!! I’m looking forward to reading it with my brother
I know what you're talking about but wait that guy was supposed to be Mark?? I thought he only showed up post-Jesus, maybe post-Acts
@@macaronsncheese9835 this part only shows up in Mark’s gospel, so it’s generally considered by biblical scholars to be Mark, although the author’s actual identity is not totally clear, but that’s neither here nor there
@@solaistrash Ah interesting, thanks.
"Venice, what do you have there?

Yes Blue, keep talking about your book. You deserve all the pride, love and praise from this accomplishment!
"And of canny little thieves"
Perfection!
He really did go "I won't make another Venice video until I have enough to write a book about it" and kept to that
Why am I just imagining him just storing all his Venice video ideas somewhere for safe keeping all this time 😂
Just had a vault labeled "Venice video ideas" chdfd
we need more "Blue just makes Venice videos forever with some Dome-age to spice it up" on OSP
“Steals a Saint”
JoJo reference and I love it.
Wow, that was an intense heist of historical importance to claim things as your own.
And I'm saying that from the British Museum!
Hey Blue, my wife and I are in Venice on vacation!
I think I made our tour guide's day because I knew about the disgraced Doge because of you, and telling her about your upcoming book!
I suspect that your book may have a place in the Doge's Palace gift shop a few years down the line 👍
I was in Vembis a few weeks ago! I remember learning about this!
Damn last time I was this early Theodore was still patron saint of Venice
I love watching your history videos, because instead of studying my school materials then forgetting them, I can just watch your videos, and remember everything!!
Ahhh... how fantastic it is to hear you talking about venice.
It's always a delight when a new video comes out and it's about this amazing city.
I could watch it for hours on end.
I love that Blue loves Venice because they are goblins
Thank you Blue for opening my eyes to how spectacular Florence and Venice are. Your enthusiasm is one of the reasons I went to said cities during my recent trip to Italy. The Duomo and Pompeii ended up being my favorite parts of the country.
Our history teacher told us this story back in high school and seeing an OSP video about it is like Christmas in June.
Venice during the 4th crusade are like the seagulls from finding nemo. Mine!
I think a large part of Blue's love of Venice come from being able use the word "lagoon" as much as possible.
8:19 Blue, wake up...!
Time to talk about your so called triple-threat combo: THE GREAT TENOCHTITLAN.
Those Venetian sailors sure are a funky bunch.
I love that Blue and Luke are friends, cause they're both among my top favorite youtubers, I was gonna say "colab when?" but I guess that would be the book lol.
Ya know, it's kind of embarrassing to admit missing out on your solo content initially because of my obsession with trope talk, but you are also one of favorites outchea, buddy. 🙏🏿🙏🏿 keep up the great work!!
"Throughout Italy and the Mediterranean, I alone am the End Node" -Genoa
4:31 THAT, kids, is what we call "foreshadowing".
The thumbnail is so aesthetically pleasing! The gold and blue is gorgeous!
8:20 «Wake me up when anybody is able to match the combo of a floating city, an unparalleled governance and religious prestige.» Tenochtitlan
I think i might finally contribute to a Kickstarter campaign because, by god, that book looks gorgeous!
Oh, and fun video!
Your explanations are always so clear and engaging. Love it!
The world NEEDS an action-comedy movie about this event
It could literally be a copy-paste Heist movie, just set in medieval times (plus the parody potential would be especially great)
Great vid, learned a ton and love the delivery!
The more I watch Blue talk about Vembis, the more I understand why the book "The Thief Lord" takes place there.
I’m legitimately so excited to read this book (and to just own such a beautiful book!) (and to add more pins and stickers to my OSP collection!)
I am so desperate to get this book on my shelves!!! Blue, you are a crazy genius! i LOVE the venice videos, and all the videos ever made on this channel!
I don't even really have a liking for Italian history. But the thought of listening to the audiobook for Blue to drop an "oh NOOOOOO!" easter egg hooked me. Dammit. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
The Veneziad is going to go so hard with how much Blue loves this swampy merchant city
The fact that you got RUclips’s residential Roman time traveler and his wife to translate your book into what seems to be the proper Italian for the time period makes me want to buy the book that much more.
Video idea : the adaptable threat trope
It's bizarre watching a video about something I already know about. I still love your analysis of it though Blue, and congrats on the book!!
originally on the fence but you know what, I even went ahead and added-on the map and pin/sticker set, I want you guys to continue to make videos that I really appreciate and although already funded, I'd like to still support these year long passion projects that not only mean a lot to you, but are also of quality imo
I learned of this story in Venice and it still makes me smile to this day.
I find it kind of funny how Blue loves Venice so much he decided to write a fanfiction about it, and honestly, good for him, good for him.
Congratulations on your new book! 🥳
"I came not to send peace, but a sword," quoth St. Mark, switching to wartime mode and brandishing his his sword high in his lion paw.
Matthew storms in and sayes,
"Hey, Mark! -- what're you doing stealing my verse!?"
"I'm Venetian now. Yoink!"
1:32 holy fucking shit dude this is amazing be so proud of yourself for all this work
Love your work blue! 💙💙💙
I just got back from vacation in Venice. Please, if you can, go!! It’s such a neat, compact, and walkable city. So much history and neat features you’re not going to see any place else. Even got to see the tomb of St. Mark up close and it was a really moving experience-even if you’re not religious, you can’t deny the gravity of the historical significance!
Crazy to think i have been subscribed for something like 7 or 8 years now, wild
Just made a pledge to the Kickstarter, can’t wait for the release!!
Congrats on publication, G Blue Stewart
I'm am SO BUYING THAT BOOK!!!!!! Congrats Blue!!!!
“Venice is the city of water, of Saint Mark (winged lions), and of canny little thieves”. Nice reference, intentional or not (maybe it’s just me) to the Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke, one of my all time favorite authors. And now the Venezias can stand beside the Thief Lord as my favorite books on Venice!
Love your work Blue. I'm also trying to write a story but in the style of Slovo o Polku Igoreve about a woman's adventure in the early Christianized Kievan realm!
Thank you for the birthday gift Blue!
Congratiulations about the success. I unfortunaly have not the money but I am thilled for you ^^
