    nice comparison report. It will be nice when you go over candidate 1-6, you can have a table below to show the rating from previous candidates. For example, while going thru rating of no 3, you can show a half-filled table of rating of no 1 and 2. This will make it easier for viewers to see if this is better than the last 2. Once again great job and keep that coming.

    Not sure if you have ever tried sanding rust opliym when it is dry but not cured. It is a weird semi rubbery consistency. It will gum tour paper instantly but then you can kinda polish it. Works amazing to get real clean details. You can sculpt and carv the paint to get super crisp detail and control of texture. Very delicate and finicky but if patient can yield incredible results

    • @Darkwingdad

      But why bother when you can use a solvent based primer that fills better, sands easy & dry & ready in 15/20 minutes not hours like crustoleum?

    That mask does not prevent anything because you are still smelling the primer. You should use 3M filtered mask. If you smell something, it is time to change the filter.

    I feel like you were a bit hard on Rustoleum. I don't experience any of the issues you had with the product. I would suggest getting a smooth drywall sponge, press lightly, and not think of it as sanding/removing the primer. Instead think of it as if you're polishing the 2 in 1. It'll actually shine up, and be super smooth. As far as control/spraying issues, that could be technique, spray distance, or even climate. Who knows? It's like filament. Results may very. I can't say your opinion is wrong, if it's true to you. I can only say it's different than mine.

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  2 года назад +2

      It’s a test so each one is ran through the same test. What it shows is rustoleum is a more delicate filler primer. Its show variance as the other 4 primers had little to no issues. More sanding tests will be given in round 2 with different media and grit. What I can say is you don’t want filler primers wet sanded or smoothed so much to where it creates a sheen and can reject top coats. Additional tests will be conducted in part 2 but even with a sanding sponge and inteface pad both rustoleums gummed up and we’re gouged by 220. I noticed the rustoleum needs different techniques that I mentioned in the video & I’ll highlight them in test 2, thanks for watching!

    • @kirbybowerman7454
      @kirbybowerman7454 2 года назад

      I've built a mark 17 suit, and I'm currently printing a mark 2. I haven't come across the topcoat adhesion issue. I definitely dont wet sand the 2 in 1, but I believe the manufacturer recommends it. Ive seen others wet sand anyway. Maybe, these are all techniques you'll test in upcoming videos, and if you come up with something interesting I'll definitely give it a try.

  • @murphchris5670

    Hi sorry if this is an obvious question but can you sand the filler primer when it's dry? Because I made a death eater mask for Halloween and was hoping it could be lightly sanded when dry.
    Cheers

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  4 месяца назад

      Yes you can sand the model, apply the filler primer & once dry repeat that process until it’s smooth. You want to change the grits of your sand paper each layer you do. For example- sand the model with 80 or 120, than sand the primer with 160 or 220 and after you apply more primer sand with 220,320 up to 400 grit.

    I know rust 2in1 says 2-4 hours, by i swear it only sands well for me when I let it dry for 48 hours :)

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  2 года назад +1

      Lol ironically in my part 2 I state & show how long it takes for it to dry. 90% of the time when people have frying or reactions it’s all derived from rustoleum. I’m not saying it’s total garbage but it’s finicky & lots who use it do not wait proper times I guarantee. I see people loading this stuff on after an hour…that’s just asking for trouble. IMO a filler primer should not be so temperamental, primers should be the easiest part of painting.

    Why do most come in gray? Isnt it easier to paint of its in white?

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  2 года назад +1

      Gray is the most neutral in the color spectrum. Primers in white & black will heavily affect top coats tinge & hue hence why most primers are grey. White & black are both too harsh in hue that’s why they aren’t made. The only primer that’s easier to paint on is a solvent based one, color is irrelevant.

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  2 года назад +1

      In your “defense” you’re not wrong about mentioning color. Often times people who are painting gold or metallics would benefit from white and many times mix & match enamels and run into adhesion and curing problems. The best thing to do if you’re wanting color variance is use a white or black matte or satin enamel as an undercoat. Many people do gloss undercoats which just contributes to orange peel & potential improper curing & warping.

    You've said multiple times that the rustoleom 2 in 1 is water based. The product spec listings I've checked on different websites says it is oil based. If this is oil based doesn't that mean I can't use acrylic paints on top of it ?

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  9 месяцев назад +1

      So recently rustoleum did in fact change there formula & the new 2 in 1 (260510) is in fact oil based. The filler primer used here is there old water based formula. So if not fully cured it will definitely create adhesion issues with acrylic paints.

    • @tysoncolley8110
      @tysoncolley8110 9 месяцев назад

      Do you know if there's a way to tell which version is which? I literally dumped like like 8 cans of this stuff into a bunch of very large models and I'll cry if I ruin everything when it comes time to paint.

    • @bangtizzy
      @bangtizzy 9 месяцев назад

      @@Darkwingdad what do you think I should do? I have a bunch of models primered in the Rustoleum 2 in 1 and nothing but acrylic paints. I researched doing a barrier coat and found mixed ideas on this. That1painter claimed on his website that primer is different and its ok to put water based primer on oil based primer. Other websites say oil and water is a no go 100% of the time. I was thinking That1painter might be right because supposedly the reason acrylics crack on oil is because the oil off gasses through the dry acrylic. But Rustoleum 2 in 1 dries so fast I would think this might not be an issue? Another thing people say is the glossy nature of oil is problematic for acrylics but as everyone knows the 2 in 1 isn't glossy. I dunno *bangs head on wall*

    • @bangtizzy
      @bangtizzy 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Darkwingdadsorry this was my other account. So yeah... just got off the phone with Jesse H at Rustoleum. He said the 2 in 1 Filler primer has always been oil based. No formula changes. The good news is he said that with this primer you can put water based products on it and I could even do laquer if I wanted.

    • @Darkwingdad
      @Darkwingdad  9 месяцев назад

      @@bangtizzy I’m not sure about them never being water based, as old msds shows soluble content in the formula but regardless when you give anything enough time to cure & do light coats you’ll be ok. I would highly recommend switching to a solvent based filler primer like upol. I’m doing another video like this with some new primers.

      Not a fan, it’s toxic, if not fully cured it will affect top coats, you have less control, you’re fighting gravity & it’s very easy to lose definition in detailed parts of the model.
