Brian, I paint motorcycle helmets and decided to use the sun to bake my helmets to speed up curing. Normally, I let the helmet sit for a month indoors after final clear coat. I do two rounds of clear. Round one to build up clear then sand to bury the graphics and then reclear. After second round, I put the helmet in the sun after 1 hour. However, the heat from the sun caused the helmet to wrinkle. When I took it out of the sun, the wrinkles went away after 24 hours. What do you think is going on? FYI, I used Createx water based paint for the graphics. Could there be moisture under the clear causing the wrinkling? Great tutorial by the way.
hello i would like to have information for the paint gun from fuji mpv8 i painter i would like to know if this gun is also good? and your opinion for the clear caot
I'm spraying small parts and I don't want a wide fan that'll waste a lot of paint. Do I have to lower fluid volume and PSI as well? If so, roughly how much?
Its good cleans away dust and grease if you put a little bit of ivory dish soap in your sanding water. Just make sure it dry and all sanding sludge is wiped away with a clean shammee
Great tips! I'm just a hobbiest and only done a half dozen full repaints & a few repairs. For the longest time I thought first "it has to be the gun - need a better one". Then it was "always use the recommended settings". Then it was "always use 50% overlap" (way too wide!). So all along there was a lot of cut & buff to fix poor results. Finally figured it out - realizing the obvious "look at the results and make whatever adjustments necessary to make it look right - duh! (including rate of travel)" And atomization is key. The cloud of overspray threw me off until I saw how much better the finish came out. Thanks so much for putting it all in easily understandable words and giving real examples! Wish your videos were available years ago when I started!
As a guy who painted for 36 years I would recommend NEVER using those silly on-gun regulators. Just open the on gun regulator all the way, pull the trigger and use the wall regulator to set pressure at gun. Then, take the regulator off. Using the wall as a baseline. They restrict flow too much and via the venturi effect can cause condensation in your air supply especially for at home guys.
Brian I literally watched this video in between base and clear on my first paint project in 2 years. I followed your advice and laid down the slickest clear I have ever sprayed. I've never had a problem with a nice coat of clear. But I'm still having problems with spraying primer from top to bottom or bottom to top. And it still gives me a sandpaper effect. What am I doing wrong???? Tried almost everything. Distance, thinning, etc. I'm at my wit's end.

I’ve been a refinisher for 25 years, first ten years was in a paint booth. I turn my fluid needle in all the way and turn it out from there, was taught this years ago from DuPont and PPG course… all kinds of ways work, consistency is key. Nice video.

When you have to refill clear. Lets say painting a complete car. Do you mix in the same disposable cup. Or so you have extra cup on the side already premade. If so a disposable or regular hardcup?
I going to start weighing the reducer, and using Tamco... I can't get the sikkens.... so I ended up with some runs and now I have to buff them out.. Ugh. It was my first car though so I'm not too upset, but I will be more precise from here on in....
Hey guys, Brian, you rock man. Thanks for posting these vids. Im learning alot. I messed up today. I bought a devilbiss basecoat which im ecstatic over but the needle tips are 1.2 and 1.3. another great video to help us DIYer's. Would never be able to try out different clears and guns. Have you ever tried the Dura Block Pro series guns including the micro detail gun? I was thinking of trying the tamco high impact clear for the motorcycle parts I normally work on.
Hey mate! Great to see you have grown from 5k subs to over 100k in such a short time. The way you teach is so clear and understandable. I would love to see a video on how you try to match different factory orange peels like Mazda’s super fine peel to fords fine but flatter peel and European thick peel. No channel has properly gone over it. Ive got my own ways of replicating it but its always nice to see how others do it!
Great video as always! Do you have a video that explains what filters you use? I.e. from the compressor to an oil / contaminates filter to a descant filter, etc? Love to hear your setup.
Depends on the airflow requirements of your gun and how large or small the project. Just doing motorcycle helmets a small compressor is ok. Overall refinish on a 4dr long box truck ? Going to need a big one.
Brill, thanks! Pressures are still slightly confusing to me (I'm a DIYer), so have a compressor delivering only 9.6 CFM. Right on the for FLG5 (on the paper at least), which works for smaller bits. I though I'd get LVLP, more suited for small compressor and here's the problem. With lower pressure I still get plenty of orange peel. I need to crank up the pressure to over 25 PSI to get semi-decent finish, but that's high enough to cause a lot of overspray and still bleed the compressor too quick for the motor (which was not supposed to be a problem for LVLP). Is there something else to considering when setting them LVLPs?
Hey Brian that looks really nice, I want to ask for a recommendation on maximizing my paint job in a garage since I don't have a paint booth, thank you.
U guys are gonna need a pretty big compressor to spray your vehicle because ur gonna run out of air before u even finish spraying a single panel. And will be waiting for the compressor to fill before u can start spraying again. If u take all the panels off u might be able to get away with a 5gallon compressor, i would also use an HVLP gun since it also uses less air. You will also need an water/oil filter to attachment to ur gun for contaminents so u dont get fisheyes, cost around $10
Eastwood makes a gun for small compressors. I used it with a 29 gallon Craftsman oil-less compressor..As long as it puts out about 5 to 6 cuft/min it will run this gun. Comes with a 1.3 tip and a 1.8 tip for primer. Kit runs about $170 but they put it on sale quite often. The gun isn't as air hungry as some of the regular HVLP guns but you have to plan your shoot because you will still run out of air if you try and paint the whole car. I've painted an entire side in one sitting without too much trouble but it was about at the limit of what my compressor could deliver. Since then I've upgraded to an 80 gallon 7.5hp two stage compressor so air isn't a problem for me now.
I'm so glad to be learning from the best instructor on youtube! Honestly brother, you give me the confidence i need to just get my whip done! I keep getting runs with my primer hopefully today will be the day it all lays smooth. Cheers! 🤙
Great job Bryan....you are a grate Teacher ...always very interesting listening to you...i like the way you brake things down so that everyone can understand bless.
Have a Walcom Slim Xlight HVLP brand new. 1.3. Maybe not familiar but a midrange gun from what I understand. For clear and in a garage (not booth) setup should I be lower on pressure, perhaps 15-20 psi at gun, and less fluid (maybe 2.5 turns in or so) and a 8" fan? In my setup, the specs on the clear (PPG) and the gun talking about 29 lbs seems too high. I should have less pressure, less fluid, and not a huge fan. Of course I will test, but agree?
I have one of those 3m regulators laying around, sucked from day one. I only buy the RTI Diaphragm regulator because they work excellent and last a long time. They aren't available everywhere though
G'day I have a version of this gun made in Germany I think. It's called a Durr 910 ecogun mplv and 3 different set ups. A 1.2, 1.4 & 1.8. I have been told that the Durr is the original, there is a pressure gauge on the fan adjustment. Sprays well but I love my Devillbis GTI pro lites, what you guys call a Tekna pro lite. Cheers. 👍
Depends entirely on you and your compressor . If you have enough airflow and you can keep up staying in control of your gun go for it. Don't let the gun or equipment control you.
I am looking at painting my car with 1K acrylic and a 1K clearcoat. The technical datasheets say 40 - 60 PSI but I notice that most of your videos use 22-25 PSI. What do you recommend and why?
Brother i like you, you are so good techer. Iam from Serbia and iam begisner at this job. My question if you want help me is my gun is ITALCO Shine 1 LVMP. Presure is min optimal 2.5bar or 36 psi to max 3.5bar or 50psi. Tell me or if you can make video with this gun, how need to stay psi for clear coat. Pre-grateful Miljan
Brian, I have a T - Series Spray gun from Fuji. I'm using a Mini Mite Platinum 4 Turbine system. I have to say the base coat turned out FLAWLESS with a 1.3 mm tip. My question is this...I'm going to spray the clear coat tomorrow. What tip would you recommend for the T-Series HVLP Fuji Gun using a Turbine System to spray clear? Fuji was saying most likely a .8 mm or a 1.0mm. What do you think?
I did a set of wheels yesterday and they came out great my buddy why did the wheels for ask me where I learned how to do this and I said from paint Society
Brian, are you Cuban-American? Thank you for all the info and lessons. Thanks to you I’ve been improving greatly. I appreciate your attention to the finest details and your willingness to explain in depth 🙏
This will be my first time spraying clear with flakes-Im going to try to spray ( .008 ) black flakes onto a burgundy paint job-I am using a ( 1.3 ) tip-thats all i have to work with-Do you think that the settings in the video will work for me ?
Clear has always been the bane of my existance... Love the advice!

Hey Brian that looks really nice, I want to ask for a recommendation on maximizing my paint job in a garage since I don't have a paint booth, thank you.
bro same here i also want to know if any compressor would be fine
Cheers! 🤙
This guy is good, but was better in the Avengers...do the hulk thing.
Hi sir lam from Indian. Basically I am painter.. so any job vacancy call me sir.
Don’t follow the specs too much on the tds. Just follow what works on your paint gun
Very informative and detailed. Thank you!
I have one of those 3m regulators laying around, sucked from day one. I only buy the RTI Diaphragm regulator because they work excellent and last a long time. They aren't available everywhere though
Why do you say black is going to match no matter what and not have to blend it on the door?
Can you do an episode on repairing clear coat flaking? Here in AZ clear coat doesn't last but a few years. Thank you and love the channel.
I NEEDED THIS TOO
G'day I have a version of this gun made in Germany I think. Cheers. 👍
Hey Brian, when painting a whole vehicle that I'm not going to take apart, do you recommend panel by panel or run the gun the entire way?
Same here. I need to know
Depends entirely on you and your compressor . If you have enough airflow and you can keep up staying in control of your gun go for it. Don't let the gun or equipment control you.
Why is this not running like crazy??? I don't get it.
Can you teach us how to paint car with a paint roller?
Old school
But most brands clearcoats goes rrducer in it no? Sikkens, glasurit, duxone, ppg etc...
Many don’t reduce
No head cover.... Do you shave your head bald after to remove all the clearcoat out of hair?
Yes. Every time
Brian, I have a T - Series Spray gun from Fuji.
That’s awesome Ross. Miss ya!
Brian, are you Cuban-American? Thank you for all the info and lessons. Thanks to you I’ve been improving greatly. I appreciate your attention to the finest details and your willingness to explain in depth 🙏
I'm watching you work, a thought goes by 'works like a robot', subtitles come on 'work as a robot' :D that's nice!
