      It’s definitely good, as a Godzilla movie and as a film. Most Godzilla movies don’t have both. I don’t think you’re wrong for that opinion.

    • @VictusPrime
      @VictusPrime 7 месяцев назад +6

      @@dustinneely It's regarded by those who weren't fans of Godzilla to be a great film in general, not just a good Godzilla movie. No other Godzilla flick has achieved that. Shin might have got close to that, but that film was mostly a Japanese political satire that most audiences around the world can't relate to on a fundamental level the same way they can the main human cast in Minus One as the themes explored in it are much more universal.

    Really appreciate how mature and level-headed you are about the film, especially since it sounds like you were anticipating a completely different film than we ended up getting. That can be very disappointing, but it’s not the film’s fault for being its own thing, and your ability to look past it not being what you would’ve made speaks volumes to your strength as a ‘film critic’ so to say, and why you’re probably the most respected Godzilla RUclipsr with regards to reviews of the films. Even when I or others don’t necessarily agree with your final conclusions about a particular film, you always back it up with well thought out and articulated points.
    Looking forward to hearing more about Minus One from you; there’s so much to talk about with regards to this film and it’s many themes, and the overwhelmingly positive response it’s gotten from every angle is so gratifying as a long time fan. This is the film the franchise needed, and I think it’s impact on the franchise will be deeply felt for decades to come.

    Minus One is pretty handedly one of the best Godzilla films ever made. Its character writing and acting is unmatched. I still don’t know if it tops out over some of my more nostalgic personal favorites, I will need more time and rewatches, but it’s already top 5. I think the real achievement is that this is probably the only Goji film ever made that I feel that I could show near anyone, and they would like it. All the others have some weird caveat to it, like some bad VFX, some cringey acting or writing moment, or off putting artistic choice that won’t mesh with everyone like Shin or G14. -1 is a full on success the likes of which we’ve never seen in the franchise. Some other movies might have more fun action or more originality, but -1 is the whole package and more.

    I really appreciate Reiwa Godzilla committing to the themes of the movies. Minus One is all about building up the future when you're left with less than nothing; what happens when a soldier comes home from a war he was supposed to die in, and his home is destroyed? It makes the One Human vs Godzilla work in a way i never expected it to. Godzilla's new ability perfectly encapsulates the theme too. A massive success in my eyes.

    My wife is as “not into Godzilla” as it gets but saw this movie with me in the theater knowing how big a fan I am of the franchise. She even enjoyed the film! So much so that the next day when I watched Gojira, she paid enough attention to notice the similarities to Minus One and Gojira while reading her book! I bet if we didnt see Minus One she would’ve just kept reading and not read the subtitles from the movie 😂

    It's unfortunate for Legendary that Godzilla x Kong is going to live in this film's shadow, but I'm glad that it will. Legendary needs to work on better plots, as is evidenced by the declining quality of the Monsterverse from 2014 to the present day. I'm not saying that I don't want Legendary's films to be a flop. In fact, I'm saying the opposite. I want the Monsterverse to be fun for ALL members of the fandom. I want it to have a compelling story with interesting characters ALONGSIDE the fantastic monster action we've been getting. I don't want these goofy, half-baked subplots that we've been getting. And, thankfully, Godzilla Minus One has shown us that that specific combination IS possible. Hopefully, Legendary pulled out all the stops for GxK when they were filming it and listened to the feedback they were getting about the story.

    After the community post from some days ago, we can say officially: Welcome Back!
    Indeed, Minus One is possibly one of the greatest Godzilla movies ever. Not sure quite YET if I would call the best of them all like so many people are saying but it is pretty damn up there. The themes of it were quite relatable and can be inspiring in your day to day life and while watching it I was in awe of such thematic performance as well as Godzilla himself. Who was truly remorseless, destructive and frightening, possibly the scariest he has ever been in a movie. I felt dreading the times he would show up unlike other movies where I'm with giddy anticipation of when he'll show up next.
    Overall, I enjoyed it but I have seen it once. I'll wait to see it again when it comes out in my country to gather my thoughts and process it further as a movie like this deserves.
    It's understandable that life gets in the way and as time goes on you can give attention to the channel as often you used or would like to. Jobs, College (in my case), or overall life happens andyou have to deal with it bit by bit. I hope stuff has gone well with you either way, UFTD.
    Can't wait for the content on so many of your thoughts from multiple things that have happened recently back to back too, this channel sure have activity considering that, hahaha.

    I just saw the movie yesterday and I'm still processing it a bit. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the initial scene of Godzilla appearing on Odo island. He was truly menacing and malicious in his attack. I was surprised they chose to reveal him so quickly in the film as it was maybe five minutes in. That being said we don't see him again for a while and by then he is much larger, stronger, and vicious. I was in tears at certain points because I felt for these characters. When he uses his atomic breath, which is so much more devastating than before though Shin may rival that, I actually said to myself, "Not again." It's not perfect by any means, but it takes Godzilla seriously and in a new direction while also taking pieces of previous iterations and making them work together. Considering the crap pumped out by Hollywood over the last few years, this is a welcome breath of fresh air.

    This movie and the acclaim around it is a cultural phenomenon. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a film rise to popularity so quickly almost purely through word of mouth. Just went to see the film last night, 4 days after its theatrical run in the United States was supposed to end, and the theater was packed. People are showing up for this movie and I couldn’t be happier about it. It deserves all the praise it’s getting

    • @MattMcIrvin

      It kind of reminds me of the reception "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" got. In both cases, it's a franchise everyone already knows, maybe even likes but doesn't necessarily have the highest respect for, and also one that big American studios have been playing in recently such that the movie might seem redundant--but somehow this thing transcends all that and succeeds as art in a way you'd never guess from the title. I recall one of the directors of "Spider-Verse" saying "We seem to have made a word-of-mouth Spider-Man movie," which in the Age of Superhero Cinema was something that shouldn't have been possible.
      One difference is that while "Spider-Verse" succeeded by stretching the boundaries of modern animation and breaking new aesthetic ground in radical ways, "Minus One" is more traditional heart-tugging, thrilling storytelling.
      Indeed, some of the praise for it has tried to frame it as some kind of anti-political or "anti-woke" work, which is obnoxious and to my mind has nothing to do with the movie. But its character concerns are mostly personal.

    For me, this is the second best Godzilla movie. I still like 1954 a bit more. It has that charm that can't be replicated. Shin and GMK are up there as well, but It will always be 1954 for me.

    • @tikhongilson3770
      @tikhongilson3770 7 месяцев назад +1

      I only place it a bit higher than Gojira 1954 because this movie has guns with recoil. I think they could have found a way to do that, even with 1954 technology, but they didn't

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 5 месяцев назад

      I don't even know how to relatively rank them, since they're from such completely different eras of film. 1954's concerns are slightly wider and more political, but it's not to say that Minus One is apolitical. And both of them are meaty stories with vivid human characters and moral dilemmas that hold your attention when the giant monster is not on screen. There have been other Godzilla films that strive to tackle major issues in a serious way, or to shrug off the camp aspects of the franchise, but of the ones I've seen, until Minus One none of them quite hit that mark. Minus One is also a somewhat less dark, more hopeful film in its take-away messages, and that's another difference between them.
      I was stunned when I saw Godzilla '54 in its original Japanese cut for the first time 20 years ago, and realized that the whole Godzilla series started with not just a good kaiju flick, but a *great film* that could be put next to any other landmark of cinema. Apparently Honda was never given the freedom to approach Godzilla with that level of seriousness again, and he seems to have regretted that. But Minus One managed it.

    The film was more of a metaphor for human cost of WW2 rather than the political aspect. Which I like more. I think Shin did a great political commentary but I don't think it would've worked with Minus One. And honestly, that's for the better. If there's one thing we need right now, it's more human stories being told.

    Having the chance to see a Toho Godzilla film on the big screen was, quite simply, cathartic, and getting to view this particular movie on release, was outright fantastic. I'm maybe in the minority, but i quite enjoy Godzilla portrayed from a villainous side, which i think this movie did an outstanding job with. And even if Minus One didn't directly portray the political ramifications following the nuclear war as you had originally envisioned, I still think it works particularly well as a setting piece. It's a means of HOW the characters were brought to the place they are today, and many of the heavy topics are intrinsically understood as part of the setting, and honor culture of that time period.
    I believe Shin Godzilla may be the most important MODERN godzilla film for Japan, for a long time, but this is the film that may truly awaken a new fandom outside Japan, in a different light than the Monsterverse could.
    Please take care of yourself man. A king's gotta rest, eh?

  • @edmondmartinez9617

    Just glad to hear your always thoughtful analysis again. What i think has made minus one such a profound and successful movie is the same thing that made Top Gun Maverick such a success. Its the simplicity and directness of the plot. Like maverick, this film so tight, so personal, and has absolutely no filler or BS nor any agenda or message being hammered into it. It feels like you are watching real people dealing with an extraordinary situation, and that resonates in a way that is so rare these days. I understand the political movie you want, but we got that with Shin Godzilla. That was an amazingly artistic film, but its dragged down as a film by its message. Government gridlock, committee meetings, and the inability to adapt are all great messages, but they can't truly resonate because they are concepts. Minus One is the first Godzilla movie of the entire series where the humans are actual characters, where we feel as they do, because the film doesn't project them as cogs in a greater machine, but rather that we are at the ground level with them, just living their lives. No exposition on what Godzilla is, or his ecology, or psuedo science nonsense, because as people in real life, there are no exposition fairies to randomly drop all this nonsense information. What we experience is a damn Monster, pure and simple, and how ordinary people, even at their lowest possible point of their lives, are the ones who not only have to deal with its consequences and wrath, but are also the only ones who can face the monster itself. By focusing so much on just ordinary people using what they have against such a genuine monster you make the battle personal. And that is something almost no movie does today.
    The original has its throne due to its message but is held back by the its era, Shin Godzilla is a terrifying spectacle held back by its slow heavy handed messaging. Minus One is story really about man vs. Monster and it holds nothing back.

I thought it was going to dive deeper into the nuclear allegories as well and we'd see more of America's reaction to Goji etc. I can understand why Takashi did this since it gave him more time to focus on the central characters which worked out very well! Saw it for the second time today and thought I would be more prepared for the emotional moments in the film. I was wrong, and it hit me as hard as the first time. I did enjoy that having seen it, once I didn’t have to focus on the subtitles as much and could focus a little more on the actors. The first time was in IMAX and I highly recommend that if you can find one near you. My second viewing was in 4DX, and I wouldn’t recommend it. It had moments where it was effective, and enhanced the experience, but there were times it was distracting and overdone.

    It’s so good to have you back man! I’ve become a fan of your channel earlier this year, but my spirit was lowered when I saw that your channel has been inactive for so long. I was thinking that you’d never return, but boy, am I so happy to be proven wrong! With that being said, I noticed that you were planning to review other pieces of kaiju media prior to your absence. (At least “Godzilla Singular Point” which was just released at the time.) Which brings up the question… Do you still intend to eventually go through with those reviews that you planned to do back then?

    Nice hearing from you dood and take care in your current life AND congrats to you and your fiancé!
    I went to see Godzilla Minus One last week and I don’t think a Godzilla movie has ever had me sobbing and crying in such a way ever. What makes this movie so powerful for me is the emphasis on its Human cast. It’s such a long and drawn out sentiment in Godzilla/Kaiju movies that “the humans are there to fill when the monsters aren’t”, so it was so refreshing to see this film focus on its cast, but use them beyond just plot devices/vessels for themes. People in my theater geniunly laughed at the banter between Shikishima and his working buddies and cried bitterly seeing him have a PTSD episode or Akiko call out for her mom. As an audience, we care for our cast and want them to live a happy life, so when Godzilla comes to destroy that, we are scared for them and the movie shows repeatedly how easily people can die. Most times in a Godzilla film, we’re excited for the rampage, but here it’s one of the examples where I wanted to just yank on someone’s arm and tell them to run because I don’t want to see them die.
    The last 30 minutes of this are truly a gauntlet of emotions from fear, awe, dread, sadness and relief that got more of an emotional response out of me compared to any movie I saw this year. I too need to watch it a few more times to see if it’s truly my favorite, but it definitely ranks up with the Original Film and Shin Gojira for me.

    I can't agree it's the best but it's top 3 for me. Still can't beat G54, that stays at the top. But this was dang close. Certainly has some of the best acting in any FX/kaiju film, and the spine of the story with the MC having to deal with survivor guilt and PTSD was extremely strong. Good to have you back though.

    Your explanation for your hiatus reminds me a lot of Barry's Temple of Godzilla, an old website from the early internet that is still around, though is no longer updated by the creator. He was very active in the late 90's/early 00's and basically the same thing happened; he wanted to focus on other things in life and only periodically came back to the site. The last being a review of the 2014 movie. Wish you the best of luck with whatever you do!

    i’m on my seventh watch of this film taking everyone I can to see this movie and as a lifelong godzilla fan it’s really cathartic for everyone to be praising a godzilla movie movies that me and my dad bonded over that me taking him now means so much to me when he says it may be the best godzilla movie he’s ever seen knowing he’s watched the toho godzilla series since the 70s. I’ve been waiting for a big film like this and for you to have your thoughts on it since your one of my favorite godzilla channels. Long Live the king v

    Lifetime G-fan here, this is almost certainly a top 3 Godzilla movie from a film quality perspective. There are some nits I keep picking at (what did they talk about on the minesweeper for months on end that the rest of the crew didn’t know about his family arrangement?), but they’re minor.
    That being said, Minus One IS a political film. By hyper-focusing on the suffering of the homeland civilians and individual soldiers who are scientifically designed to be innocent, it provides grist for the political movement that tries to downplay or rehabilitate the crimes of the empire. “The War” is abstracted, it’s actually meaning lost because we are never invited to consider what the brave veterans in the final operation were doing a few years earlier.
    There’s also a strong libertarian streak - the government itself is no good, not even trying to fix the problem. It’s up to a group of Heinleinian veteran-citizens to save their country (though in the best American libertarian fashion, they still have the benefit of state resources).
    Are the characters coming out and stating political talking points? No, not really. The general message is “War is bad;” the political message is in showing why and implying what, therefore, we should do.

    I identify very much with your sentiment and confusion. As a long time Godzilla fan, I liked Minus One very much and I am glad that it is doing well. But at the same time I can't say that I consider it to be the "all time greatest Godzilla film". I was little disappointed upon leaving the theater and while I think it is a great movie - one I may change my perspective on over time - it is also somewhat reductive as a Godzilla film. These feelings stem from the very same reason you mentioned; I expected the film to be a remake of the 1954 film and when that didn't happen, I was left unfulfilled. While they made a good job with it, the film was not as "thoughtful" as it could have been.
    I think that it comes down to this; what the film gains in intimacy, relatability and the "human element" in focusing solely on ordinary people, it loses in moral and thematic gravitas and scope. It is simply a movie about the trauma of war. This is all fine in and of itself, but Godzilla was always also about the danger of technological overreach, human hubris and responsibility of power. These themes cannot be explored, because there is no "Serizawa-character" or any larger theme about scientific folly or hubris. In this sense, I consider Minus One to be reductive. Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Planet Eater-trilogy, Godzilla Singular Point and even Godzilla 2014/2019 were more philosophically interesting to me.
    Also, typically I detest the "Godzilla should have had more screen time" - argument. Here I think that the film could have profited from giving Godzilla a more extended "city destruction" segment similar to the 1954 film. Godzilla felt more of a side-character in this film than any other Godzilla film to me.

    WOOAAAHHHH YOU'RE BACK. I personally loved Minus One. I've never felt more connected with Godzilla characters and I really cared about them this time. For the first time ever Godzilla really scared me and it was a real mix of excitement and horror when he was onscreen. Definitely one of my all time favorite Godzilla movies now.

    Welcome back mate, this was the first channel I ever subscribed to. I used RUclips since it's first existence but never felt the need or dedication to sub anything. After watching your KOM previews and talking about how you got into Godzilla as a kid, I genuinely resonated with that and your chilled objective approach to videos is refreshing in contrast to the ADHD on red bull commentary on most videos these days.

    I still think this film is second place to the original, but still, one of the strongest HUMAN stories in the franchise, and some of the deepest writing.
