I don't get why people think that every disaster movie should focus on civilians, sometimes it's more interesting to see what's the goverment up to.

A bit of a hot take, but the Shin Godzilla Movie is actually a faithful recreation to the Japanese culture and history and putting an iconic monster in the modern situation. The critics that the foreign watchers point out are actually what makes it a realistic, terrifying Godzilla movie. It isn't some heroic or monster vs monster movie. Its a disaster, and its how Japan sees Godzilla to be, a disaster that stemmed from the wrongdoings of the humans.
That's why it's my favorite Godzilla. I've always hated the concept that Godzilla is this "savior of humanity" figure and fighting monsters. This is a creature born from radiation, growing larger than it should and becoming a pure monster that destroys everything in it's path. That's what it was in the beginning and what it always should have been.
Yeah, kind of interesting how the only two truly _good_ Godzilla movies ever made are the original and _Shin Godzilla._ Some of the others are fun... just not very good.

@Vishnu PM I've had a rough week. I wasn't expecting a song featured in a monster movie to make me cry. The only critique is I think they could have found a better soprano. Then again, maybe tastes in Japan are different. Regardless, that song completely wrecked me. Thanks, I think. Maybe this means I need to pay attention to something in my life.
Shin Goji is a critique of Japanese bureaucracy and at a same time, veiled message to Japan in accepting new and radical ideas from the mavericks, especially the youth. Godzilla is just the background where the entire story revolves upon, just like it was in the 50s version. Don't know to you Westerners but the message hits very close to home in my part of Asia too.
As a Westerner living in Japan, the less ideas we get from the radicalized youth the better. America is now a fascist country with armed gates around the Whitehouse and no freedom of speech because of the unbridled youth coercing with mega corporations..
@@zonzillamagnus5902 keyword "balance". America went too far, while Japan is way too rigid. Why do you think Japanese women don't have many children? Because they were raised to believe only a salaryman is a good husband, but those jobs are extremely hard to get in today's Japan (the kind where you literally stay your whole life in one company and just climb the ladder for the years spent there). Similarily, Japanese working hours are anything but to be proud of (those are getting better every year, so thank God for that). On the other hand, hard migration control is a wonderful thing. Promoting local businesses and traditions is a wonderful thing. Both are needed for a country to prosper. Japan has historical experience what happens when you stick to the old without ever moving forward (someone will outrun you and force you to play by their rules). Btw, you're confusing "fascism" with "socialism".

Shin's skin also was meant to draw parallels to burnt bodies from nuclear fire, and the scene where he uses his fire breath to destroy the city, the shot is meant to harken back to firebombings in ww2.
Shin Godzilla may not be for everyone, but as a huge fan of Godzilla films good and bad it was time to have a film that updated the tone, and themes of the original. Personally I think it's one of the best, arguably the best Godzilla film because it takes the premise seriously, it becomes more than just another monster movie, and I feel the best Godzilla movies do that. While I enjoy the silly, and over the top Godzilla movies, it's movies like Shin Godzilla, Godzilla 54, Return of Godzilla 84/85, and Godzilla vs Biollante, or Destroyah, etc.that have kept the legacy going.
To me, a neophyte, this felt like a true Godzilla film. The cheesy kid part in me enjoys the legendary godzilla movies for the power fantasy and stupid fun of giant badass monsters punching each other and the CGI galore, but the adult part of me was absolutely fascinated by the undertone of Shin Godzilla and all the themes it touched.
This movie makes me think how people back in 1954 felt when they saw the original. Now-a-days you look at it and don't feel the fear and dread people felt back then. Shin Godzilla does exactly that for modern audiences.
Shin Gozilla is a horror movie. I was awestruck by this Godzilla. And I don't get people's complaining of the design. The transformation from goofy to the most scariest Godzilla is what makes it so good.
@@chargemankent his original concept in where he creates an whole different dimension within him is definetly lovecraftian, the one we got isnt really a cosmic entity beyond the understanding of humanity so no lol
YES!! Thanks for the greatest review!!! I'm Japanese and struggle with film reviews from out side of Japan. They were just discussing about Godzilla size or made a great beam to the city etc etc etc... The film targeted obviously Japanese and its government (as you can see from too much debating scene in the movie), and I think non-Japanese people could not understand why it has been made like that. This review released me from the struggle and it would be more interesting film, if you get know about 311 earth quake in Japan.
In the American godzilla movies the focus is more on action and cool fights. In Shin Godzilla the focus is on godzilla and how to stop it. It gives it a more desolate feel, like there's no hope. It makes it feel like a giant unexplainable creature just emerged and there is nothing that can stop it.
@@NobleWolf33 that's obviously not true or endgame wouldn't be the highest grossing movie ever. People don't just go for a great story. They also go for fanfare, action, sometimes music, effects, ect.
Legendary's 2k14 Godzilla uses literally the same charm. The humans try to do something, while Godzilla does his own thing. The humans are mostly irrelevant, mere bystanders to the forces of nature, serving mainly the purpose to lead us through the movie. Don't confuse this with the 1998 abomination (was still a great monster movie, just not Godzilla).
I think that you hit the nail on the head by describing this movie as the most realistic that a Godzilla movie can get. Nearly everything outside of Godzilla himself is pretty much how things would play out in such a situation. The bureaucracy getting in the way of action, the politicians trying to minimize the threat (which, as someone recently found out will get you voted out of office), and how the world would be affected as a whole as opposed to the Big G just being "Japan's problem".
The Godzilla vs Hedorah one is my second pick after the og film (which I put after shin as first) imo, It showed a lot of human focused suffering and even our big lizard suffered through It, and It fits how Hedora is yet another human born issue with Pollution as It's theming
It’s a good film that happens to be about Godzilla. Just like the dark knight, two towers, empire strikes back, judgement day. Blockbusters franchise can have good films.
Shin Godzilla is the perfect "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" movie. I loved this movie when it came out and it was one of the few times I truly enjoyed the "movie theatre experience." Great vid.
Probably the creepiest aspect of Godzilla's design aside from his eyes - those dead, beady, glassy, fish-like eyes - was the splitting lower jaw we first saw in the first atomic breath scene. It had no apparent reason to split; it was probably just a random mutation, likely from the radioactive waste it consumed. But it gave Godzilla an even more alien appearance, heightening his horrific nature.
I like to think that the multiple humanoid "5th forms" of Godzilla's evolution is the creature somehow recognizing the power inherent in massive cooperation, and adapt that ability. At the start of the counter attack, you can see that Godzilla's tail hasn't begun to change yet, so during the course of that attack it began changing to meet the new threat.
shin godzilla is imo, the best godzilla film to date. It gives a rare insight as to how Japaneses view their government, the country's place in the global stage and just the overall trauma from the past. It really feels like the true sequel or remake of the very first original godzilla, when the movies still had meaningful messages and more than just a movie about monster.
Given Anno's previous work as an animator, specifically animating explosions among other things, it doesn't surprise me that Goji's atomic breath looks amazing in this film.
I still remember when Godzilla vs. Kong came out on HBOMax. I was talking to a few Japanese friends about being excited about the film. They were shocked about how I was excited to see Godzilla on a rampage and telling me how they would be too scared to see Godzilla again after "the last one." This movie did its job for Japanese people. It reminded the general audience what made the 54 movie an all-time classic, and it put the fear god back into Godzilla.
8:44 when I first saw this scene, it reminded me of the ancient shark Frilled shark, which was first seen (at least in the early videos) with exotic gills with weird things coming out of it, huge round eyes, and its weird alignment of teeth.
This is to Japan what Joker was to a lot of comic book fans. A very depthful look and deviation from the generally lighthearted and often regarded soulless movies that plagued the genre
@@swordmonkey6635 the american Godzilla still beat Ghidorah and can fire big ass atomic lasers out of his mouth, how the fuck is Kong going go to fight that.
I think Mikako Ichikawa's character "Hiromi Ogashira" is incredibly underrated. She was basically the most effective scientist from the start, but kept getting brushed aside by everyone except Rando, and even he had priorities on other people. Her struggles are the encapsulation of bureaucracy and sexism issues, born into a single character.
Great film. The actress was the perk for me. Other than that, I could not find anything that made me go 'oh this is boring, too much government exposition' because it also harkens back to the original. A lot of that film, aside from that somewhat romantic trio, it was all about stopping Gojira. The US and other powers were briefly addressed because they had to be. The implications of this creature changed everything. Likewise, the existence of this freak of nature in Shin Godzilla would have been a major topic of discussion between global powers. Of all the kaijus, Shin Godzilla was the most frightening. Not only because of its mega atomic breath but because of how it came to be and what it could continue to birth. The post credits scene is a testament to that. Not to mention that in one of the deleted scenes, like John Carpenter's The Thing, it showed that the blood he spilled was still alive. It was eerie.
Shin Godzilla is an amazing movie on multiple fronts. Social commentary, original homage, raw emotionality, gripping storytelling, visually stunning, visceral acting, etc. It ABSOLUTELY deserved every award it got.
I'd like to note the strategy used against Shin bears a remarkable similarity to the one the US military thinks would actually kill Godzilla. It fails horrifically once it reaches the B2 stage and results in the loss of all 3 bombers and the utter devastation of Tokyo, simply because Shin evolves in response to the pain the bombs cause him and lashes out in all directions. All of this possibly due to Anno making it a snide jab at trigger happy military officers who're indoctrinated by their own training and experience to think bombs and bullets can solve every problem they're faced with, as he's done in the past with Eva.
Idk, their inaction before with the helicopters cost them a lot. They could have killed them then but they were too afraid to fire on the off chance that one of the rounds would go way off course and hurt them.
“Fun” (trust me i pity shin goji) fact: the song “who will know” is in shin goji’s perspective telling you he is feeling pain constantly, intelligent and depressed of his own existence
The question I have is this: did Shin Goji go unconscious when he was filled up with those coagulants, or is he standing there, awake but frozen? Given the horror of his existence, I fear it’s the latter.
@@Ajehy he is awake, like most of sharks and amphibians, if they get freezed or have to deal with a very low temperature they'll survive for years doing nothing, shin is awake and waiting to be unfreezed
No more akira died so toho was next he made final wars and shin but bear made Godzilla 2014 and king of the monsters and is making big g vs Kong so bear we continue these three people are legends more owner to akira
This movie showed me another way to do characterization. You may not learn a thing about these people's private lives, but you do follow along and see for yourself just how hard they work, how they keep going despite exhaustion and immense pressure, and how they find ways to navigate the situation they're in. Sometimes that's enough to show what a character's made of. We didn't need or have time for a subplot about some guy trying to locate his lost kid and make up with his estranged wife during all of this.
once you learn the evolutions Godzilla would've gone through if he'd survived, the creator of Evangelion being part of the project makes so much sense. He evolves into a literal deity
Easily in my top 3 movies. And it was so strange to me knowing that Godzilla started out as a cautionary tale with symbolism of just how much destruction we can cause, only to turn into a sometimes goofy, sometimes spectacularly cool, but in the end pretty standard “giant monster fights another giant monster” character. And as much as I loved those films, what really drew me in to begin with was the overwhelming tragedy that Godzilla caused, and the visceral imagery mirroring true events that once were. I had wanted a modern telling of that old Godzilla and Shin Gojira was so much more than I could ever ask for. It’s such a beautifully depressing movie. And Godzilla really is a void as the song suggests. No bottom, no end in sight, not even hope. Just praying for beams of light without even knowing why.
I feel like this movie is if Aaron Sorkin wrote a political satire starring Godzilla. There are a lot of fast-paced "walk with me" moments in this one.
Yeah if this was an American version, they'd be trying to cram meetings in between switching rooms, people wouldn't get out of the room they needed, people would be trying to kick them out of the room, everyone would have to pee, and everyone would be hungry, and everyone's phones would constantly be going off. And they'd be arguing about budget instead of optics. Then a few people watching their doge to the moon. :D
Shin Godzilla was never an easy movie for non-Japanese to understand. This was a wonderful explanatory video that went into the background and history of the film. As a Japanese, I am sincerely pleased! Thank you very much. (Sorry about the copywrite clame from Toho Pictures. As you know, they do not understand English well.)
Agreed but he's still pretty scary I mean he wiped out most of humanity in a few seconds with his plasma cutter tail but in scare Factor Shin Takes the Cake
The take away for me regarding the tail represents the past unsettled rage underlining the civilian casualties of the atomic bombs dropped on non military targets. The scorched skin of Shin Godzilla reminiscent of the cruel images of those that burned due to nuclear blast but lived, although briefly, with 3rd degree burns on 100% of their bodies. The old footage and pictures are haunting and the test footage of the us using pigs at test sites before hand also disturbing. The human element of what Shin Godzilla represents as well as the nuclear are part of a living scar on the subconscious of those greatly affected by the fallout of ww2.
@@zapplague7664 That's pretty cool! in a way Japan completely changed culturally as a result of the atomic bomb. I wonder if its a social commentary on modern Japanese cultural deviation into westernization.
Excellent analysis. You even get the ending with the tail, which I believe to be a visceral scene meant to invoke sensations and thoughts in a viewer on a more primal, pre-verbal level. It is impossible to dictate what this scene "means" because everyone will interpret it differently and that's exactly the point. Good video and even made me think differently about a few things even though I've seen this film 10 times and the original Evangelion 3 times.
It is unusual how I am wording this, but I feel that "Shin Godzilla" is both an appreciated AND unappreciated film! It seems more appreciated by the general film audience both here and especially in Japan, otherwise it would not have won all of those awards. And in this country, critics were generally pleased, garnering a solid 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is the G-fans that seem to be the most harshest on this picture. Some did not like the all CGI Godzilla and wanted the return of suitmation. Others thought it was too talkative (a criticism which I could agree with). And others thought it too political, too nationalistic. I wholehearted disagree on that one. If one wants to watch a G-film that has hints of nationalism, one has to look no further than "Godzilla vs, King Ghidorah". "Shin Godzilla (I thought), was the most intriguing G movie since "Godzilla vs. Biollante"
I am a die-hard fan of the '54 movie. I love how serious the tone of the movie is, almost reverent towards the destructive power of nuclear energy/waste. When I watched Shin it was like a breath of fresh air! I totally got the same vibes like I got from watching '54 for the first time and to get that feeling was nothing short of magical! I still highly enjoy the schmucky B-movies that came after, don't get me wrong! Ghidorah and Mothra are a packaged deal when discussing the movies. But I enjoy them in a different way than I do '54 and Shin. And I agree with your last statement. IMO Biollante is a must for the American series. I'm kinda hoping that after we get Mecha Ghidorah, we'll get an after credits scene showing us a lab with a vase of roses.
Return to suitmation? I love godzilla movies and especially the heisei era, but a suit limits what you can do. Im not saying we should never do suitmation, but rejecting everything not using a suit would do the franchise a big disservice. The cgi of the shin godzilla is nothing short of amazing and i dont think theyd manage to replicate that look with suits. Godzilla movies have often been talkative and as long as it dosent get too boring and takes away from what we want to see (looking at you godzilla 2014) im fine with it. Talking about godzilla or saving tokyo? Great! Talking about not godzilla? No thanks Also too political and nationalistic seems like bs. It literally was a satire on japans inability to deal with the fukushima disaster. The movie even needed foreign aid (that didnt work), so nothing new there.
@@muskatDR Fun Fact: The mocap was done by someone wearing a barebones Godzilla suit, complete with weighted tail. I'd say Shin is the best of both worlds.

Btw...left a comment about the original Ghidorah on your comprehensive review of every Godzilla film. With over 600 comments, I figured it might get lost, and I was curious about your opinion. I think it's the fact that Godzilla is treated as a metaphor for cataclysms and the problematic, and often over-complicated approach to such, real world issues.
I don't think our film industry would be capable of making a film examining the good and bad of our government, our place in the world, and our relationships in that world. Kudos Japan. It's an amazing film and I look forward to seeing where they go with it.
This is an excellent review, and your thoughts, ideas, and thematic breakdowns helped me enjoy the movie on a deeper level. I rewatched it after watching your review and caught things I missed previously. I hadn't noticed the main human character's titles kept expanding throughout the movie. Your outlining the themes of government bureaucracy struggling to meet unexpected disasters, satirizing their failures during the tsunami and Fukushima enriched the warching experience. As you pointed out, they went from one meeting to another room to have a meeting, which is exactly how government often works. At one point, they cant decide what governmental agency is supposed to be in charge. Such a great movie on so many levels, and your review did a great job pointing them out. Thank you.
The haunting image of humanoids irrupting from his tail was the cherry on top. Godzilla somehow understood that humanity was a threat due to their numbers and their committee. If he wasn’t stopped at that moment Shin Godzilla would have spawned who knows how many humanoids. I don’t think it would take long for them to use humanities own weapons against themselves.

While I enjoyed Godzilla Minus One more, there's no denying the brilliance of Shin Godzilla, the new design of Godzilla along with the updated setting has parallels to the original, and the results are familiar yet fresh. I think Shin Godzilla and Minus One are brilliant in their own right for different reasons, they're the best Godzilla films apart from the original which started it all.
Makes me think the Covid Pandemic and the incompetency of governments in real life, except sometimes in some countries, that incompetency can be openly malicious unlike in Shin Godzilla.
Shin Godzilla is my favorite version and movie of Godzilla because it’s about him doing what he’s suppose to do, DESTROY HUMANITY and uses real life events that happened. It is really a masterpiece in my opinion. And I thinks it’s great.
I'm not a fan of the Godzilla franchise but I adore this film. I've must have watched 5 times by now and it still holds the same power and awe over me every time I put it on.
Appreciated the points made on this. I think Shin Godzilla does a lot of things well and is the first "true" Godzilla film since the original. I couldn't stand some of the quick editing choices in the human moments, however. I get that from your perspective, it's a feature of the film to help emphasize the chaos of the situation, but as a viewer it made it incredibly hard to watch. So many quick jump cuts from thing to thing made me feel like I was watching an influencer video. There was a moment where they discover something about Godzilla's DNA where they actually stayed on a shot with some human character for more than 5 seconds it felt like a breath of fresh air. There's a lot to enjoy, but felt this was a critical problem with the film.
The question I have is this: did Shin Goji go unconscious when he was filled up with those coagulants, or is he standing there, awake but frozen? Given the horror of his existence, I fear it’s the latter.
when I saw the king of the monsters (2019) I left the theater pumped up excited and ready for more, but when I left the theater of shin Godzilla, I was just in awe at the destructive unnatural force that Godzilla is, it really had me thinking of it for hours, it almost had a heaviness to it, the outstanding scene showcasing the atomic breath playing over in my head with the amazing score and soundtrack that really sells it. the way that both the Americans and Japanese excitement over what they thought to be killing Godzilla only turned to nothing short of sheer horror on both fronts when he released a cataclysmic beam, left with nothing but fire, ashes.... and the overlooking, figure, glowing, with blood-stained scales, and a sickly jagged smile, knowing that canonically his body would evolve slowly taking over this planet and spreading on to the next is scarily terrifying, he, no.... IT really is EVOLUTION incarnate. nothing short of a god.
I'm from Australia and I can still confidently say that this is in my top five favourite movies. It has it's problems, but a shines through them and I am totally and utterly invested every time I watch it. "That one scene" (You know the one) is truly breath-taking.10/10, would absolutely recommend to everyone. Also Who Will Know is the best "villian song" ever made.
For any TOHO executives that MIGHT be reading this & think people won’t watch their movie because they watched this video. You are wrong. In fact the sole reason I am going to watch this movie is because I watched this video.
Honestly this is my favorite Godzilla movie, period. My gripe with the critics saying that there is no character development, the conflict in the film is so fast paced that there is literally no time for character development. And from watching the movie a good couple of times I have concluded that there's a total of 2 main "characters" in this film, being Japan and Godzilla.
The fire breath scene could also be a reference to the fire bombing of Tokyo During WW2, the single most destructive bombing raid in human history, an event overshadowed by the nuclear bombs, but just as notable.

Yeah, it’s also a scathing political critique about how the government reacts to crises.
Yeah, kind of interesting how the only two truly _good_ Godzilla movies ever made are the original and _Shin Godzilla._ Some of the others are fun... just not very good.
Maybe I am a foreigner, but yeah so this is why shin godzilla is my favorite movie and godzilla version and by a long shot. A LONG long shot.

One is unstoppable and the other... Could speed up a bit.

@@Edognightcrest What? How would you make Shin Godzilla faster?
Godzilla vs. (God Damn) Politics.
More like Humankind vs Bureaucracy lol.

This! Japanese survivors of fire bombings and the atomic bombs said some people were burnt so badly they resembled alligator people.

Good call! I thought it looked familiar.
Perhaps that's what it looked like before the events of the movie.
Possibly not just what it looked like, but maybe that’s what is actually was.
This was what the designer of Shin took inspiration from when making the design
This is to Japan what Joker was to a lot of comic book fans. A very depthful look and deviation from the generally lighthearted and often regarded soulless movies that plagued the genre

The embryo form was definitely spectacular.
I remember finally getting a solid look at it and it's like, 'ok ya now i'm sure anno did this'
Shin Godzilla succeeded by making you not only fear Godzilla but pity him as well.
Shin Godzilla is an amazing movie on multiple fronts. Social commentary, original homage, raw emotionality, gripping storytelling, visually stunning, visceral acting, etc. It ABSOLUTELY deserved every award it got.
Audio sounds better on this one. 👍🔉👂
Interesting.

I love how this film spits in the face of all Heroes Journey tropes. That it highlights both nonconformity and teamwork is bloody brilliant.

What is interesting is that the tail actually becomes a whole new civilization for the creatures, or his next form which is not seen in the film.

No thanks
Also too political and nationalistic seems like bs. It literally was a satire on japans inability to deal with the fukushima disaster. The movie even needed foreign aid (that didnt work), so nothing new there.

This film is like the logical evolution of the "Monsters are tragic beings" quote.
Anno's way of showing immense power and environmental impact is what this franchise needed.
A somber, lumbering visage of grim possibilities and simultaneously a reminder of what we can accomplish as humanity.

Why can't it live side by side with the American godzilla
A part 2 directed by the same person would be amazing
The ending feels like the book of this story is still in the middle and was just closed with a bookmark laid on it
While I enjoyed Godzilla Minus One more, there's no denying the brilliance of Shin Godzilla, the new design of Godzilla along with the updated setting has parallels to the original, and the results are familiar yet fresh.
He is actually frozen and still awake but slowly dying every day
when I saw the king of the monsters (2019) I left the theater pumped up excited and ready for more,
but when I left the theater of shin Godzilla, I was just in awe at the destructive unnatural force that Godzilla is, it really had me thinking of it for hours, it almost had a heaviness to it, the outstanding scene showcasing the atomic breath playing over in my head with the amazing score and soundtrack that really sells it. the way that both the Americans and Japanese excitement over what they thought to be killing Godzilla only turned to nothing short of sheer horror on both fronts when he released a cataclysmic beam, left with nothing but fire, ashes.... and the overlooking, figure, glowing, with blood-stained scales, and a sickly jagged smile, knowing that canonically his body would evolve slowly taking over this planet and spreading on to the next is scarily terrifying, he, no.... IT really is EVOLUTION incarnate. nothing short of a god.
Audio is good on this one! Hopefully it doesn’t get taken down. I’ll rewatch this one a few more times, like I always do. 😉
Thanks bro!
A well done video coming from the biggest Godzilla fan :)
