The weirdest part of the video to me is when he says the mutos were a representation of Japan and that Godzilla is a representation of the US. Not ONCE in the movie are the mutos connected to Japan and it’s just kinda weird how he kept mentioning it
And he wanted to put race on this then he should have known that the male muto was from the Philippines and nested in Japan and the female was found in Las Vegas so he is dumb
Not to mention the MUTOs were an invasive species. If they got the chance to reproduce they'd be flooding whole swathes of the world with their offspring.

Yeah Id say most Godzilla fans know how stingy and protective Toho is of Godzilla to a fault. Thats why until Godzilla 2014 they took forever to allow Hollywood to make another film, why there's barely any Godzilla video games, how each Godzilla monster has a price tag if developers want to include them, and how quick Toho is to flag down RUclips videos sometimes that talk about Godzilla movies and include scenes
This reminds me of a tweet shortly after Minus One released that said something along the line of "Japan understands that Godzilla embodies the horror of nuclear weapons, the american one fights with a monkey." As if the japanese one didn't also fight with the same monkey decades ago, and hey, at least the american one won against said monkey. Minus One is a fantastic movie, but it really highlights how people on the internet really don't care about Godzilla as a franchise at all, a lot of discourse around the movie is about how they can understand the obvious metaphor and treat it like it's some of the most profound message ever put to screen, and use it to fuel their culture war. I'd argue that the entire kamikaze angle and character arc of the protagonist is the most interesting part of the movie, as it's something that the franchise never attempted before.
GMK, the Kiryu duology, heck KOTM even grew to be a dearly missed title among fans over the years despite the immediate success of the sequential GvK. The post-54 Showa era made some unforgettable moments and creatures.

Well if were being honest ALOT of the Showa era is kinda garbage made for children, hence the dancing, flying with his breath the kenny compilation movies etc. The Showa era is easily the worst era. Jared Krichevsky (the creature designer for Godzilla x Kong) said they have to get Toho’s approval for any Godzilla designs they come up with. He’s most definitely not in the public domain.
I’m glad people are coming together to not tolerate the lack of information that people present in videos. Because it’s something that runs rampant in other fanbases.
He said that he doesn't even like Godzilla. Okay, then, WHY DID YOU EVEN MAKE A VIDEO ACTING LIKE YOU HAD ANY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT GODZILLA IN THE FIRST PLACE!?
I agree. I like that Godzilla's character is versatile and can be a villain, anti hero, hero etc depending on the vision of the director and the theme of the movie

Fun fact, part of Toho's agreement with legendary actually prevents Godzilla from dying. the only way American Godzilla is allowed to die is if he has an heir.
Especially when Toho charged 1 million per monster. So you might the entire US military budget and beyond to bring in every single Toho monster into the Monsterverse

Not many people mention how Godzilla can represent anything. It is truly what makes Godzilla so appealing to so many people. He can be dark, serious, funny, friendly, emotional. Godzilla is something that everyone kind of owns, in one way or another.
I also see it as godzilla has 3 variables to him 1 he can silly and good showa most of the animed and some other are the examples 2 a natural force that sides with the earth or will only attack when provided with a reason legendary and earth are examples 3 a monster that will cause destruction without reason (except for shin, he is basically just in constant unbearable pain). Examples are heisei and the 1954 one

Godzilla as "giant monster pro wrestling" as he's often reduced to in the US, still works. Japan loves pro-wrestling, and it's kind of cooked into Showa Godzilla's DNA. On top of that, Monarch Legacy of Monsters just proved that Godzilla can still do dramatic even when it's not a TOHO or Japanese production. One thing I am going to ultimately resent about Godzilla Minus One is how people use it as a point to bash the rest of the franchise and talk about how "not as good" the other movies are. It got old after the first weekend, and is now kind of annoying. We get it, Godzilla Minus One was great, but that doesn't give me a reason to bash the other movies and certainly doesn't mean it's the only take and tone for Godzilla I want to see.
I remember reading something about how Haruo Nakajima (the suit actor for Goji in a lot of showa era films) loved wrestling and wanted to include certain wrestling moves in Godzilla vs. Megalon.
@@FirewoodMediaTVI imagined Godzila as either a sumo wrestler cause ya know the wrestling and brawls he has against the other monsters. Or a shogun or samurai. It's kinda accurate.?? Cause samurai have guns. And hypothetically godzilas is kinda like a gun?? Does his atomic breath count?
Certain people are afraid to admit they enjoy something on such a simple level as "giant monster pro wrestling fun" because that would somehow make them seem less "intellectual" and would break their facade of being some sort of higher being who only appreciates things with "deep artistic merit".
I find it funny how he claims Toho is not as money hungry as Disney when Toho were going to sue a trash bag company for calling their product "Bagzilla". The one thing scarier than Godzilla are his lawyers.
A Godzilla movie taking place during the Cold War sounds like a good idea, especially since there was a great fear back then of nuclear warfare. Like Godzilla could be taking down battleships in the ocean without any side knowing that it’s actually a giant monster, increasing tensions as both nations blame each other for it until the big reveal. I guess that SOMEWHAT happened in Godzilla 1985…kind of…
Fanstastic video! Skipper's video very clearly was made to cash in on the dumb "culture war" "hollywood vs. non hollywood" thing that so many people are trying to do. Because if he actually did even a bit of research his video wouldn't exist because he'd realize, "oh this is just objectively not true." Godzilla like Batman or Spider-Man or the Gundam franchsie or Superman, can be super serious and talk about serious themes and messages. But they can also just be goofy fun. It's very sad so many people are being elitist about Godzilla because of Minus One. If you prefer the serious films that's fine but to act like the goofy ones can't exist alongside them is elitist and stupid. I rambled, fantastic video!
honestly, I think the monsterverse starting more grounded and becoming more insane does still work with the nuclear weapons metaphor because the more you build and use nukes, the more crazy, dangerous, and out of control the world becomes
Even then, the grounded tone never sticks past one movie throughout the entire history of the Godzilla franchise. Godzilla starts off as war allegory in 1954, and not even two movies later he's fighting giant apes while clapping his hands like a kindergarten bully at the playground, play volleyball with Rodan with a rock, twin fairies, space dragons, anti-gravity dropkicks, and flying in the air with his own breath. Starting off grounded only to become more fantastical shortly is part of the franchise's identity, and it should be embraced, not shunned.
@MrAwsomeness360 exactly! And tge same thing happened in the Heisei era too! And I'll bet you that if Shin had a sequel or if Minus One gets a sequel it will happen there too
@@weik-2936Exactly! No matter how grounded you try to make it, you're dealing with giant radioactive monsters. You can't just deal with something like that and not play with it like a kid in a sandbox. The grounded tone is a "One In The Chamber" type deal, it only works for one movie per series. Like, dude, the MonsterVerse starts off in a 9/11-like scenario with Titans and then Kong: Skull Island rolls up with a fantasy island full of flora/fauna hybrid monsters and Hollow Earth theories, which is the big selling point being elaborated further and further as the series goes on. It's like asking the Ninja Turtles to be "grounded" despite having aliens, mutants, fantasy creatures, mystic magic, interdimensional traveling, etc.-it just ain't happening.
@@MrAwsomeness360pretty much any franchise with insane concepts being grounded doesnt work because of what you just said: aliens, magic and the only one i see being able to pull it off is The Boys mainly because it shoves in real life elements to a world where superheroes exist and not making it entirely grounded in reality
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the success of these movies why Japan started making godzilla movies again? With both shin and minus one directors being big fans of the movies?
@@nugget3687Not only that, but when watching Minus One, I noticed a few subtle MV references that weren’t in previous Japanese Godzilla media. For example, never once did Japan utilize Godzilla’s dorsal plates being visible when he swam, MV Godzilla started that. And they did it in -1 as well. Not only that, but some underwater Godzilla shots even looked like they shot it the same way they shot MV Godzilla’s looks in GvK.
The original Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla is absolutely a good movie. Not even from a campy perspctove, its as legitimately as fun as any of the funner Marvel movies. 2:37 In Toho's defense, they made a list of conditions that the team could follow if they decided to continue with it. As the team outright says, the conversations between them were "pleasant and cordial". Toho didn't force them to adhere to their conditions, the team were given free choice, and they willingly chose to accept said conditions. As anybody who understands copyright and trademark knows, too much unlicensed or misappropriated Godzilla could remove him from the protection of trademark law. They HAVE to be aggressive with their IP if they want to keep Godzilla from becoming generic.

What surprises me is now that Godzilla is popular, I have a bunch of people from my childhood asking me about the new movies. It made new fans, and that's great. I guess what I am getting at is that Skipper's video feels like a new age version of shitting on "that rubber suit shit" except now it seems to come from people who are up their own ass while being stupid. I dunno. I don't know the guy, or have never seen his videos, but that doesn't seem like a good first impression.
We also have to remember that if Legendary didn’t convince Toho to let them make Godzilla 2014 and it became a box office success, Toho wouldn’t have made Shin Godzilla and Minus One
Tbh I'm glad I never watched the video when it was making the rounds, I saw something about Godzilla being public domain in the states and knew to stay the hell away. he 1954 Godzilla and the one that appeared from 1955-1975 are two different characters despite sharing the same name, as the former died in his debut film from the Oxygen Destroyer. While the second Godzilla started as a villain, he slowly developed into a hero. Plus, throughout the Showa era, they still kept his origin the same, it's just they turned it into something more positive than hanging onto Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but in a more natural way. Raids Again, he was fighting Anguirus purely for territorial reasons. KK vs. G, it was for territorial reasons. He was also the villain, there. Mothra vs. Godzilla, he was the villain, Ghidorah is the start of his redemption arc, as Mothra persuades him and Rodan to fight the bigger threat which is the space dragon. Here, we also delve into Godzilla's feelings towards humanity in a way that relates to us, as he just wanted to be left alone, but the military kept "bullying" him and Rodan. From that point forward, as long as humanity left him alone, he did the same. In Invasion of the Astro Monster, he only became a threat when he got brainwashed by the Xilians. TBH, he didn't become a full superhero until Vs. Hedorah, and even then he still glared at humanity after defeating Hedorah, warning them if they create something like it again, he'll go after them. Meanwhile, in the MonsterVerse, he was a protector from the very start, and his atomic powers are 100% natural, even before the Castle Bravo tests. Godzilla's character in the MV feels less nuanced compared to the Showa era.
Yeah, the issue isn’t that Godzilla doesn’t work in America. It’s that we quintessentially don’t get or respect him the way Japan does. To us he’s just a cool big monster doing cool big monster things. We’re so far fucking removed from what he’s supposed to represent or we embody what he represents so we just run with it. Legendary MV pics aren’t bad Godzilla’s they’re just mediocre movies trying to capitalize on a popular trend in media and it definitely feels that way. Fantastic video! Very mature, and well put together. One small correction though: Ishiro Honda did direct a lot of showa films, but he was actually very (respectfully) outspoken about how he didn’t think that the goofy Godzilla was what he wanted. But he was a very respectful man, and put his faith in the producer knowing what needed to be done for the company and the franchise. But even into the end of the showa era, Ishiro Honda did not want Godzilla to be goofy. He tried to course correct a bit when he did Terror of Mechagodzilla.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say I fucking called it. Minus one is drawing out people that this fandom doesn't want and that don't want anything to do with the fandom. this is fine people can do there own thing but when you start spouting off nonsense that's when were gonna have issues. the amount of times I've heard Godzilla minus one called the best Godzilla movie ever because its the least like the other Godzilla movies doesn't exactly make me happy to know the films doing so well. the fact that so much of the anti-hollywood/ anti-disney crowd is championing the movie also isn't a good thing. I think our fandom is about to enter a hefty round of toxicity that I'd have preferred just been avoided.
listen from what I've seen its sorta like the original movie, dark depressing and horrifying, the monster verse ain't that, their two different entities who just so happen to share a name and people need to learn that
Hard disagree that it's "just his opinion." Roger Ebert once said the following: "So let's focus on those who seriously believe "Transformers" is one of the year's best films. Are these people wrong? Yes. They are wrong. I am fond of the story I tell about Gene Siskel. When a so-called film critic defended a questionable review by saying, "after all, it's opinion," Gene told him: "There is a point when a personal opinion shades off into an error of fact. When you say 'The Valachi Papers' is a better film than 'The Godfather,' you are wrong." Quite true. We should respect differing opinions up to certain point, and then it's time for the wise to blow the whistle. Sir, not only do I differ with what you say, but I would certainly not fight to the death for your right to say it. Not me. You have to pick your fights."
I think that having an opinion does not mean you have to bring down the people who like the stuff that's the complete opposite of your opinion And thats pretty much every movie review ever where it ridicules something to make something look bad For example: Transformers (Bayverse) vs Transformers (G1/Reboot) Both of them say that the other is bad and it is not transformers enough for their taste and both of them get in heated arguments trying to bring one down simply because one is "mindless entertainment that does not respect the source material and makes fun of it because it feels like a cartoon" and one is "too friendly and too clean for it to be a large-scale action movie where it takes away the magic and raunchyness of action movies and replacing it with disney robots" And this comes from a person who used to like the Michael Bay Transformers movies but eventually realized that it is not all that good but i not once i tried to bring down people who like the bayverse, but more of pointing out the problems with it, and the biggest problem is that whenever someone criticizes something that they like, they'll just think that you are being a hater
My problem isn't what he presents as opinion. My problem is what he presents as fact. He wants to say a majority of Godzilla films suck, cool. That's how he feels, no right or wrong about it. But when he says that Bernie's flask had water in it or that the MUTOs represent Japan, well then gloves off, wheres the evidence buddy.
@@OBSDCC7 I think the real problem is that so many people either can't or just won't recognise the difference between opinion and fact, and they feel the desperate need to justify their enjoyment if something by overhyping the fuck out of it, or inversely go out of their way to shit on something they don't like even in aspects that aren't actually poorly made. Like it's one thing to say "I like Micheal Bay's Transformers better than the Godfather" and it's quite another to say shit like "the visual effects in CW's Flash are amazing state of the art VFX work while James Cameron's Avatar films are cheap and look like utter shit". One is a statement of personal opinion which can't be wrong regardless of the film's quality unless the person sharing this take is lying about their personal preference for whatever reason, while the other is a statement of fact that can easily be disproven. People act like nothing is objective in films, and while that might be accurate to say about people's response to said films it certainly isn't the case for what actually goes into making them, there are rules and standards to make a film that works, and while rules and such can be broken and twisted for interesting creative intent it still needs to be done with purpose to yield the desired response, just like critics can't just say whatever failing even basic fact checking and expect people to eat it up.

As if the japanese one didn't also fight with the same monkey decades ago, and hey, at least the american one won against said monkey.
Minus One is a fantastic movie, but it really highlights how people on the internet really don't care about Godzilla as a franchise at all, a lot of discourse around the movie is about how they can understand the obvious metaphor and treat it like it's some of the most profound message ever put to screen, and use it to fuel their culture war. honestly, I think the monsterverse starting more grounded and becoming more insane does still work with the nuclear weapons metaphor
because the more you build and use nukes, the more crazy, dangerous, and out of control the world becomes
and the more you make the nukes do more ridicules shit
Even then, the grounded tone never sticks past one movie throughout the entire history of the Godzilla franchise. Godzilla starts off as war allegory in 1954, and not even two movies later he's fighting giant apes while clapping his hands like a kindergarten bully at the playground, play volleyball with Rodan with a rock, twin fairies, space dragons, anti-gravity dropkicks, and flying in the air with his own breath. Starting off grounded only to become more fantastical shortly is part of the franchise's identity, and it should be embraced, not shunned.

I think recency bias plays a big factor there. Minus One is still fresh in people's minds and had a much bigger release/more hype here in America. It's like getting a new video game and playing it more than your other games. Shin Godzilla obviously deserves its props because its a masterpiece. If anything, I think its pretty cool we can have three masterpieces in the Godzilla franchise ('54, Shin, -1).
Btw I'm planning on doing a big video on Shin Godzilla later this year!
In fairness, Both SHIN GODZILLA and GODZILLA MINUS ONE wasn’t advertised as much at as to me. I only know about G-1 because of RUclipsr were talking about it.

he 1954 Godzilla and the one that appeared from 1955-1975 are two different characters despite sharing the same name, as the former died in his debut film from the Oxygen Destroyer.
Mothra vs. Godzilla, he was the villain,
Ghidorah is the start of his redemption arc, as Mothra persuades him and Rodan to fight the bigger threat which is the space dragon.
This may come off as heresy, but I actually prefer the Cartoon version of the 1998 Zilla to the Legendary Monsterverse one.

Minus one is drawing out people that this fandom doesn't want and that don't want anything to do with the fandom. this is fine people can do there own thing but when you start spouting off nonsense that's when were gonna have issues. the amount of times I've heard Godzilla minus one called the best Godzilla movie ever because its the least like the other Godzilla movies doesn't exactly make me happy to know the films doing so well. the fact that so much of the anti-hollywood/ anti-disney crowd is championing the movie also isn't a good thing. listen from what I've seen its sorta like the original movie, dark depressing and horrifying, the monster verse ain't that, their two different entities who just so happen to share a name and people need to learn that
Hard disagree that it's "just his opinion." Roger Ebert once said the following:
"So let's focus on those who seriously believe "Transformers" is one of the year's best films.
It’s so frustrating that people refuse to understand that opinions CAN be objective fact.
I think that having an opinion does not mean you have to bring down the people who like the stuff that's the complete opposite of your opinion
And thats pretty much every movie review ever where it ridicules something to make something look bad
For example: Transformers (Bayverse) vs Transformers (G1/Reboot)
Both of them say that the other is bad and it is not transformers enough for their taste and both of them get in heated arguments trying to bring one down simply because one is "mindless entertainment that does not respect the source material and makes fun of it because it feels like a cartoon" and one is "too friendly and too clean for it to be a large-scale action movie where it takes away the magic and raunchyness of action movies and replacing it with disney robots"
And this comes from a person who used to like the Michael Bay Transformers movies but eventually realized that it is not all that good but i not once i tried to bring down people who like the bayverse, but more of pointing out the problems with it, and the biggest problem is that whenever someone criticizes something that they like, they'll just think that you are being a hater
