Yet again thr Godzilla fandom rears their heads to end slander. Like a long while ago with the hole "Godzilla should only be serious" argument and how collectively Godzilla fans said it's fine for him to be either or. And yeah while many of the old effects haven't aged too well I can't really say they're "cheap". Hell I bet nowadays it's MORE expensive to make a miniature set and practical costumes then to use cgi.

people think godzilla looks cheap? i mean sure SOME of the suits themselves have a silly design but like the sets are fucking amazing. like the first fimm holds up 100% with only really the shot of godzillas face over tye hill looking A LITTLE silly when you look close or pause it. but its negligible at worst, completely dismissible on average, and is one scene, out of a whole that did things movies STILL copy, and do worse. Now that you mentioned it, there has been a couple of times when suitmation gets enhanced with CGI. One example I can think of is the Attack on Titan movies. Although they’re pretty bad, they did use a lot of practical effects for some of the Titan designs. In the movies, Eren and the others are portrayed by people in rubber suits enhanced by CGI.

I mean, the older ones didnt have the best sense of motion to scale which definitely lent to the sense of fakeness. It's why Bayformers is shot so close up and weird. Because big things moving fast naturally doesn't make sense to us. I doubt that has anything to do with the broader cultural implications of Godzilla itself. Do you really think armchair film critics care about the cultural fallout with America and the Japanese people post WW2?

Practical effects > CGI People just don’t know nowadays. They think everything is CGI. They will see programs from the 70’s and 80’s with color separation overlay and they say: “that’s bad CGI”. Miniatures have gotten so good, when I have pointed them out to ppl. They genuinely didn’t know it was a miniature until told.

There's one problem with your hypothesis: people were saying the same thing before the episode of MST3K. The special effect revolution brought on by Star Wars and other films of the '70s made the films of the '50s and '60s look silly. The older rubber suits, even many fairly good ones, seemed hokey compared to the aliens of the cantina or the nightmarish Xenomorph in Alien. Also, from the disastrous primetime showing on NBC to the proliferation of VHS copies, Godzilla vs. Megalon did a severe number to the reputation of the films. Not helping matters, as you said, was the lack of televised airings of Heisei films, partially caused by backlash against the WWII sequence in vs. King Ghidorah. No one thing caused this.. It was a variety of factors over many decades. MST3K didn't create the reputation, it's honestly the other way around.

Not everyone with eyes can see the same things. And those who cannot believe in a fake reality regardless of the dressing that presents it should turn away and waste their pathetic, lazy vision on something else. Real is out the window. The screen shows something else.

Blaming MST3K for American's public perception of Godzilla's special effects is the height of ignorance. American's have had that perspective for decades before MST3K aired. The real reason is more related to the first answer. Except that it's not racism, it's jingoism. In short "America is the best and if it's not American it's not as good." Godzilla and Japan were not singled out for this. Of course, American's knew that American movies and TV were the best, because the American film and TV industry told them so. The analysis of MST3K does see the problem, but only a small sliver of it. Most Americans simply were not familiar with the actual Godzilla films. They were far more familiar with the parodies of Godzilla that were slipped into American media. That was by design. Hollywood had no reason to be nice to Godzilla. They're some foreign job. Protect the business, mock the competition. It's how we got Godzilla 1998. It's a problem we see even in today's media. Hollywood is full of arrogant writers, directors, and producers who think they are the ones who decide what is good and what is bad.

I think it's more to do with how old the films are and how they compare to modern godzilla. I love the older movies but i can see what they mean dispite it being revolutionary for its time.

Godzilla movies look fake and cheap huh??? Rich coming from a bunch of forgettable twitter accounts who are cheap and fake themselves, with cheap and fake tastes, cheap and fake likes always chasing drama and clout and arguing in the internet! Sad and disappointing that most of consensus in general in online spaces think the older Godzilla movies and the amazing practical effects they did with the costumes, the miniature landscapes and sets for the destruction parts of the cities and other landmarks, the time and energy and attention spent by the film directors, the artists, the actors/actresses, the prop masters, the music composers and other roles going into making those older Godzilla films, most IMHO high quality for it's time...all that 'cheap' and 'fake'? Well I say the problem isn't those classic films, it's you and your bias and ideology, and your tastes in movies in this day and age, oversaturated by Marval/DC and all those hyper fake beautiful CGI effects and dumb lines and THE REAL cheap and fake movies most of you today call real and expensive and amazing. Like GTFO the internet, Twitch/Twitter. One dimensional critters!

After going through the history of all the Godzilla movies and the behind the scenes stories, I have gained a much deeper appreciation for those movies. The absolute, merciless hell these filmmakers went through is nothing short of indescribable. I recommend checking out Big Action Bill's History of Godzilla videos if you wanna learn more about their history.
