I think you're really overplaying the "love" subplot as not only is it really only one scene as Godzilla never chases after her once the scene is over but i think the scene is played off as Godzilla having a sense of curiosity rather then any romatic attraction
imo the whole Godzilla being in love scene can be interpreted as part of a larger arc for Godzilla where he goes from following in the footsteps of his relative and hating humanity to becoming the hero to all mankind. Godzilla falling in love can be interpreted as him losing that hatred for humans that slowly matures into the 1970’s Godzilla
Ebirah Horror of the deep was a movie I didn't expect to like. I personally enjoyed the human characters more than the scenes with Godzilla and I liked how most of the movie doesn't take place in Japan. It's cool if you don't like it, Firewood, It's not everyone's cup of tea.
No. This is miles better than the Anime Trilogy and some of the Millennium films. Some of the Showa films are way too overhated like Godzilla Raids Again.
@Kiryu-we2ob No, they aren't. It was the first era, setting standards for the eras to come. And was experimenting with additions. This is why each Showa film is so different from one another because of how the film's aren't really sequels to each other and not how the Heisei and Monsterverse have direct sequels. It was a time when Kaiju Films were something new and to experiment with. It was a much different genre then than now.
I always thought the promo material like this picture here 4:42 was so outrageously funny to me like why is she so shocked by something in front of her gman gripping her shoulder like he just whispered to bite the pillow ish is hilarious
Godzilla vs Ebirah is alright but it should have been a King Kong movie like originally intended that way so Kong fighting a giant lobster and falling in love with a human woman makes sense
I really don't mind this one and it actually grew on me as an adult since I thought the human characters were charming/fun. Ebirah may not be the most unique kaiju but I think his suit looked great and very realistic. The goodtimes vhs orginal dub that I grew up with is definitely superior to the sony dvd version. I think you'd definitely like that dub more
I wouldn't call Ebirah, Horror of the deep one of my favorites in the franchise, but it's my go-to "comfy" Godzilla movie. I just love the laid back tone of director Jun Fukuda, the swingin' 60's score by Masaru Sato, and the human cast has great chemistry (also featuring a reunion of OG cast members Akira Takarada and Akihito Hirata), also it doesn't hurt that Kumi Mizuno is a total smokeshow in this flick. Honestly, without the knowledge that this was supposed to be a King Kong movie, the scene where Godzilla looks at Mizuno's character doesn't necessarily come across as him 'falling in love' with her. It can be interpreted as Godzilla being momentarily curious in a movie where he's otherwise on a nonstop rampage. I definitely get why most don't don't consider this movie a high point in the series, but Ebirah, Horror of the Deep is way overhated. I don't agree with your appraisal, but thanks for laying your cards on the table. Great vid as always.
The scene with Godzilla noticing that human woman greatly confused me since he usually doesn’t care for humans, up until I learned through research that the reason why Godzilla did that was because the movie was supposed to feature King Kong as the lead monster, but had to be removed since Toho lost the licensing rights
My objections to this move are mostly that Godzilla and Mothra don't appear until half way through the movie and when they do show up, they're asleep. When Godzilla wakes up he stomps through an atomic weapons factory thus saving people from the threat of thermonuclear destruction rather than being a metaphor for it.
well this was a long time ago this movie was made but hauro nakajima all the other actors tried there best to make a movie to make fans happy and i dont get why some people dont like one movie were the actors all the people who participated in this movie and tried their best
I think there are some elements of EHOTD that could work if done properly. The Red Bamboo's exploitation of natives for harvesting a certain berry species for example could easily be re-imagined in the Monsterverse as something akin to what is happening in places like the Amazon or the Congo basin. The Red Bamboo could be re-introduced as a supplier of anti-Titan chemical weapons, which its customers accept without asking any uncomfortable questions as to their origins, seeing as they're cheaper than building more mechs.
"Ebriha"is not that bad. It's like Godzilla meets James Bond for lack of a better term. The fight scenes with Godzi and Ebriah are also one of the best in the series. "Son of Godzilla" also wasn't bad. "Godzilla's Revenge" wasn't actually a Godzilla film because it takes place in a dream.
I do think that this would have played better as a Kong film but I enjoy it as a change of pace for the Godzilla series of the time. I like to think of it as "What Godzilla does when not destroying cities" after several major world threatening stories this was an adventure he is pulled into while recovering from his battle in "Monster Zero" Ebrira is not supposed to be a major threat, just a monster battle in passing. The Condor fight isn't great but was patterned after the close up shots of the fight in "Mothra vs Godzilla" In all it is a fun side adventure and in my opinion plays well as just that.
While I very much disagree I can 100% see where you’re coming from and you’re logic is valid, this was a good video I just hate to see so many people getting so upset over it

I mean, you can dislike a movie, but trying to justify it by using arbitrary criticisms that could be used on other Goji films seems kinda... IDK, lame? Godzilla having feelings for a human female is no more silly than him doing a victory dance or drop-kick. Based on the thumbnail and your clear disgust of a monster having romantic feelings for a human (especially since you clearly only tolerate the concept with Kong and REALLY emphasized it in the video lol), it really just seems like this distain isn't much deeper than you just not liking the implications on top of everything else. I personally don't mind the film, not great, but I don't really dislike any Godzilla film if I'm being honest. Anyway, appeciate the effort put into the video.
I personally am neutral about Ebirah Horror of The Deep. Sure it has some good parts but it also has some bad parts, and it basically just cancels out leaving me with no real opinion on the movie. For me it’s just another Godzilla movie that I watch every now and then.
nah, this one isn't it. I think a lot of your critiques this one are quite flawed. For one, Godzilla was NOT in love with the girl. Just curious. To go that far is a huge stretch. Two, to hate this one for Godzilla not being himself is kind of disingenuous. He did things in other Showa films that is out of character for him. Or even did things he never did before or since. By that logic, you may as well really hate Godzilla vs Hedorah due to the absurd push of him being a super hero, or Megalon due to him being very cartoony and willingly being able to talk to a robot. What he does in Ebirah at best is a bit strange and that is it. It does not ruin the movie. It never goes as far as 98 with it just not being Godzilla. Personally, I enjoy Ebirah a fair bit. asides from the anime trilogy, I would probably say this or Raids Again are the most underrated films in the franchise. I enjoy how different this one is. It a much needed change of pace compared to the prior 4 movies which were just about news reporters. It got incredibly stale. I also think the plot in this one is quite strong. If this plot in this one wasn't as fun and enjoyable as it is, this movie would fall quite flat. But it does it for me. It is a lot of fun and I just enjoy the island setting. My only real gripe with this one is how wasted Mothra is. She basically does nothing until the very end. Which like KoTM, may as well not have her for how unused she was. Ebirah also is a very lame villain. I do kind of agree with the "kaiju being just large animals is lame". Except that is just unfortunately most of the early Godzilla kaiju. Like Gorosaurus, just a Trex. Mothra, just a moth. Rodan, just a Pteranodon. Manda, just a Chinese dragon. So sure I can kind of see it, but that is just a lot of kaiju before Hedorah. Ebirah is just less interesting, but I would not say bad. Overall, disagree with this one. I would even go as far to call it a bit dramatic. This film is nowhere near the abomination that is 98, and it is nowhere near as offensively bad as KoTM. This is a solid film. Definitely no Minus One or GMK, but decent.
@WrierGold you're not making any real critiques by using a nerd emoji lmao. Bro talks like your average white 13 year old with "god first" in their bio going "womp womp" to anything they disagree with
It aint that deep bro just kidding As someone who has fun with this movie, I do 100% agree that Godzilla's character is the absolute worst since its just King Kong in a Godzilla suit. But the thing I have to point out is that Godzilla's "attraction" towards Daiyo doesn't even happen throughout the whole movie and only happens at one scene. I like to think that this is the first time that Godzilla has actually payed attention to humans which leads to him learning to respect and protect them as well as his planet.
Besdies the whole love thing all these points are valid, I don't think it was ever confirmed he actually took a liking to the woman, rather he was just curious about her. I do like Ebirah though, in other media he can shoot freezing foam out his mouth and if I'm not mistaken, compressed water as well

Sorry if I’m sounding like I’m annoyed at your opinion or if I’m trying to change your opinion, I’m just stating my opinion and that I disagree with one of your opinions. Although I will agree that son of Godzilla is a horrible movie.
In my opinion i think son of godzilla is the worst godzilla movie ever just because of the design on godzilla but in general i dont really think ebirah is that bad (but it is not close to a good enough movie to call someone not a godzilla fan for not liking it)
I'm not a very big fan of this film either and I also don't like that love "subplot",but I feel like you spend way to much time on it,given unlike what you said in the video, it's not a subplot it's just one moment. I agree with alot of the stuff you said in this video but feel like you blow that one scene way out of proportion, and why the critique is still valid,It does kind of come off as disingenuous and misrepresentative of the film your reviewing.
I liked this movie was not the best but showed a different side or Godzilla. Yes it was supposed to be King Kong, but they made the best movie they could with the resources they had. Just because the director hates his work does not make the movie bad. I think son of Godzilla is bad but a good way to induce young kids to the Godzilla world but that is my opinion.
I too don't like Sea Monster that much. It's as silly and sometimes dumb as Hedorah, Gigan and Megalon (those three are some of my favorites) but lacks their charm.
I think it definitely has some of the most annoying human characters, especially the stupid kid and his lost brother. Coupla dumbasses from beginning to end. And the English dubbing makes them even worse. It is also true that the two opposing monsters - Ebirah and Giant Condor - would make much better opponents for Kong, a huge creature who is nonetheless vulnerable to physical damage like any normal animal. I knew about this originally being a vehicle for Kong from Big Action Bill's feature on this film, but I hadn't considered how that might have led to Godzilla seeming to focus on the girl instead of just overlooking her as an insignificant insect; I thought he just decided to rest where she coincidentally happened to be. He just broke out of a mountain and got out of combat with Ebirah; even the King of the Monsters might need a quick nap.
Not to mention the Red Bamboo are rather inept villains, firing thousands of rounds of ammunition yet they couldn't hit any human flesh. Still, that's all part of the fun.
God I hated Shin Godzilla, just not my film, random music from Evangelion, that dumb design and my god the stupid beams coming off the dorsal plates and tail, Minus One and Legendary Godzilla are more my style.
“Do better” you’re acting like he just bombed an orphanage or something when all he did was say he didn’t like the movie because of Godzilla’s out of character behavior, lack of a real plot without stakes, and a boring villain. I love Ebirah Horror of the Deep but dude chill
I think you're really overplaying the "love" subplot as not only is it really only one scene as Godzilla never chases after her once the scene is over but i think the scene is played off as Godzilla having a sense of curiosity rather then any romatic attraction
To much focus, I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that.
Agreed, I never really saw Godzilla as actually taking a liking to the woman.
Godzilla be like “get outta here” 💀
And at most, played as a joke/parody of Kongs dynamic with woman. Guy is just being whingy for the sake if it tbh.
You took the words right out of my mouth

I too don't like Sea Monster that much. It's as silly and sometimes dumb as Hedorah, Gigan and Megalon (those three are some of my favorites) but lacks their charm.
No judgement, but, you liked Godzilla vs. Megalon?
Worst Godzilla film ever was all monsters attack !!
This movie rules.
No
But big lobster!
New Video 🔥
God I hated Shin Godzilla, just not my film, random music from Evangelion, that dumb design and my god the stupid beams coming off the dorsal plates and tail, Minus One and Legendary Godzilla are more my style.
What did this video have to do with Shin Godzilla?
Bro prefers action than government satire 🙏🧐
@m.g.zilla2022 nothing, it's simply my own opinion on a Godzilla film that I consider the worst.
@@LegendaryMrIncredible69 not necessarily.
@@USCSSJoe Shin Godzilla is completely irrelevant to this video.
GxK: Am I A Joke to you?!?!

Lmao you’re all crying in the comment section because he’s right
8:16 that’s because it was supposed to be a King Kong movie
Yes. He literally said that in the video.
Nah GxK is the Worst One
I'll never understand why people say this.
U don’t even believe that….
True
Godzilla fighting a giant lobster compared to teaming up with a giant ape to stop another giant ape and ice monster? Yeah right
@@XDX13 yep GxK is an abomination of a film
How dare you disrepect the my boy Ebirah >:(
You hate the movie all because of a love scene? Fricking ridiculous. Do better.
“Do better” you’re acting like he just bombed an orphanage or something when all he did was say he didn’t like the movie because of Godzilla’s out of character behavior, lack of a real plot without stakes, and a boring villain. I love Ebirah Horror of the Deep but dude chill
Also he disrespect Varan my favorite kaiju even i Anguirus fan
Please tell me is a joke and not meant to be taken seriously
The fact your actually offended is crazy 💀.
The late Showa era was Godzilla at his worst.
don't you talk like that to my boy gigan
Don't agree: the late Showa era gave us "Godzilla vs. Gigan" and the two MechaGodzilla movies. Cheers!
*Best
Godzilla vs Gigan, Godzilla vs mechaGodzilla and Terror of MechaGodzilla would like to have a word with you
