This was my favorite Showa Godzilla movie, featuring one of the best Showa design for Godzilla. Still to this day, I find KingGoji's roar one of the best roars ever. Also, as a African American I was never offended by the depiction of Japanese actors being portrayed as tribesmen.
Ishiro Honda's original version makes John Beck's cut of the movie pale by comparison. The satirical jabs in it are hilarious as it perfectly combines Kaiju Eiga with 'Salary Man' comedies so popular in Japan at that time. Granted Honda disagreed, but Toho's insistence on blending the two genres, really worked well, imo.
This series you’re doing about reviewing every Godzilla film and TV show sounds very promising! I'm looking forward to your review of Godzilla Singular Point the most because not very many people have talked about it in depth.
Thanks! The TV show retrospectives will be much longer since there's more material to go through and dissect. So while the movie reviews are usually around 20-25 minutes, the show reviews will very likely be double the length. In case you're curious, I'll (eventually) be making videos about Zone Fighter, Hanna-Barbera's Godzilla, Godzilla: The Series, Godzilla: Singular Point, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Great review! It's funny how they intended for Kong to look goofy but when I was a child his design and roar kinda frightend me lol. I like both edits of the film but actually favor the u.s version a bit more since I grew up with it
@@joeysullivanTM He does lol but when I was a child for some reason he kinda creeped me out and was always for Godzilla no matter how scary he was supposed to be. Funny how things are when you're a kid too
ya know in the 80s we were recording everything on tape but one wonderful birthday or xmas when i was like 5 or 6 i got the official VHS Tape for Kong vs Zilla from 62' and the Fleisher Superman cartoons and made me a life long fan of all of them. still have them : )
There was way more build up to Freddy vs Jason ….they even had a press conference and weigh in bf it hit theatres . just saying they have 230 kills between them and 17 movies combined between them leading up to the fight .
Great review and analysis! King Kong vs Godzilla remains one of my favorites in the entire franchise. It was interesting to hear that Honda was so opposed to making a comedic tone, because that’s the reason I love this movie so much. I guess I have Tanaka and company to thank for that decision.
Deinitely a classic for the ages. And am i the only one that also found this godzilla design kinda funny? with the barney smiling face and even the click sounds from his hands... It's indeed better looking than King Kong here, but i find it amusing too
I was a HUGE fan of King Kong & Godzilla when I was a kid..& even tho I believe that this version of King Kong was TERRIBLE..I was still able to enjoy the movie.. Also it's almost SURREAL that less than 20 YEARS before this movie was made.. the United States had DEFEATED Japan in WW2 by dropping NUCLEAR BOMBS on Hiroshima & Nagasaki.. something that was part of the origin of Godzilla in the O.G. movie released in 1954
I gotta say that the controversy over the race of the actors who played the natives on the island..& whatever makeup they might have used is RIDICULOUS..& just part of modern day attempts to be POLITICALLY CORRECT. 😠
Love this review on my favourite godzilla film, as for the controversy behind the tribe. I really couldn't care less about it, I'm not offended and I don't think anyone else should. Plus there are brown Asians so this isn't as bad as people think. Also king kong won in every iteration of the film, both in the US and in Japan.
Although the movie fight can be taken as it's a draw between Godzilla and Kong, I always viewed it as Godzilla won because Kong ran away (swam) and Godzilla lives in the ocean... plus I believe they played a Godzilla roar at the end of the Japanese version which may not have been heard in the American version.
You'll be glad to learn you're not the only one with that opinion😄 GvK was better effects-wise due to it being mainly an entertaining spectacle, but as mentioned the original's satirical nature and themes of it make it a better movie (and if you ask me, i preferred the fight as well for how goofy it was Lol)
Godzilla whipping kong in the monsterverse was the pay off little me needed after being traumatized by this movie and the war crime that was kong winning
The 76 Kong film used the exact same premise with Petrox capturing Kong for marketing. It's even stated in the movie. Todays "standards" are complete narcissistic bullshit
KING KONG VS GODZILLA is one of my least favorite of the TohoVerse movies. Kong's face is so incredibly derpy, and his arms change lengths from scene to scene. The lack of continuity with Godzilla gets really annoying. In one movie, lightning and electricity doesn't bother him, the next movie, it does. The next movie lightning and/or electricity gives Godzilla strength. The next movie, it makes him weak. Also, the majority of the human characters in this movie are so ridiculously stupid it still makes me cringe to watch the human scenes to this day. And, they got progressively dumber through the entirety of the Showa era. The fights were actually cool. I know effects were limited to what could be done given the abilities of the time period it was filmed, so some things I can ignore. I will still watch it when I do a binge watch, since I've got the Criterion Complete Showa Era box set on Blu-ray, plus all the Legendary MonsterVerse movies on Blu-ray. In my opinion GODZILLA VS KONG is the far better movie. Granted, the human characters in that on are pretty weak, and the character played by Brian Tyree Henry is a completely obnoxious idiot, and the actor should have demanded better writing. Ultimately though, yes I consider KING KONG VS GODZILLA a really bad Godzilla movie, but, even a bad Godzilla movie is still a Godzilla movie. Yes, I'm talking about you ALL MONSTERS ATTACK and SON OF GODZILLA.
The film is very much a product of its time when it comes to the black/brownface and even the kaiju special effects lol…. I don’t think it's fair to judge a film of that time by today's moral standards. I am by no means trying to defend or in any way say that it is okay however I don't believe it was done to initially demean or disrespect anyone. Japan is also nowhere near as diverse as most Western countries. So it could be possible black/brownface does not have such a historical stigma in their culture as opposed to the United States, especially given the time the film was made.
What is wrong with painting ppl up to look like a different race? It is called "acting". The famous play "Cats", by this outlook, would be taboo now. The reality is, it's a movie with ppl in suits, portraying a giant monster. You have to be against all of it or none of it.
This crossover so fire they had to do it again and then again
gamera in the corner: why not me! ;-;
This is why King Kong vs Godzilla was popular back in the days. This movie is still popular in the modern era.

Tbh, yall can be mad at me, but I personally think that the 1962 King Kong vs. godzilla is better than the 2021 godzilla vs. kong

I hated the background music for the English version of KVG.
