I also hated Mothra vs. Godzilla as a kid for the same reasons, 11 year old me just couldn't handle the idea of the King of the Monsters losing to a pair of newborns but as I got older, I grew to love it. It's one of my favorite Showa movies.
As I re-watched more Godzilla movies, I realized that Godzilla tends to get his rear handed to him a large majority of the time. The few exceptions are in some of the millennium era, ghidorah in heisei, and like, revenge in Showa. (I exclude reiwa era.)
Great review. I had similar feelings for this film when I was a child too. It really started to grow on me when I bought the special edition dvd of it in the 2000s. It's masterfully put together and remains in my top ten Goji films. Mothra's movements were also amazing and looked very realistic which I don't think was matched until 2003's Tokyo sos. I also really liked the added us navy attack scene in the American version as well
There’s many reasons why Mothra vs Godzilla is one of the best Godzilla films out there it’s the first confrontation of The King Of The Monsters and Queen Of The Monsters, it has a good plot, cast and epic soundtrack and the fights and monster scenes are so entertaining but to me there’s 1 specific reason why this movie is one of my favorites it’s the very first Godzilla/ Kaiju movie I ever saw I was just a wee little lad about 5-6 years old when I saw it for the first time that moment changed my life for me it started my journey as a diehard fan of Godzilla and all Kaiju alike it also started my obsession with Japan as well I’m 21 now and I still love all of these things! I can’t thank this classic blockbuster enough for making a huge impact on my life without this movie I don’t think my life would be as entertaining and enjoyable as it is today the last 10 years (2014-2024) have been a huge success part of which was the rebirth of Godzilla/ Kaiju films and huge successes like Godzilla: Minus One, Godzilla Singular Point, Shin Godzilla, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire! LONG LIVE THE KING!
I'm guessing ishiro honda during behind the scenes realized that godzilla is starting to fall down from a nuclear threat to just a scary monster. In the English version the American ships helped japan
The AIP version of the film was titled ‘Godzilla vs The Thing’ because Columbia pictures had the rights to the name Mothra and not AIP, as they released the US dub of the original Mothra film. This is also why the AIP Gamera films don’t mention Gamera in their titles (though I can’t remember which company distributed the dub of the first Gamera film or why Gamera vs Monster X had his name in the title).
Definitely giving this movie a watch at some point when I get to watch the Showa era movies. Just a thought but maybe you can post a video in the future about the Canon MMD animations because I think they are possibly the best, in terms of storytelling, cinematography, and action, Godzilla fanmade animations on RUclips and should be talked about a bit more so kaiju and anime fans unfamiliarised can know about them, but you don't really have to.
As an adult this is my fav Showa Era film outside of the original. Especially when you look at the behind the scenes work that went into it. They implemented a ton of new filming techniques and the Mothra prop is still one of the best looking in the entire franchise
“I’m your worst nightmare!” (Holding picture of mosasaurus) This guy: “you’re not that scary!” (Labels it as a dinosaur instead of a marine reptile) This guy: “ *_AGHHH_* “
One particular scene that wasn’t in the official Japanese cut, was the US Navy bombarding Godzilla with missiles. It was shown in the English Cut, but one of the executive producers in Toho thought that it was too sensitive for the audience in Japan to see their coast being bombarded by the United States. Henceforth why we don’t see US ships firing rockets at Godzilla in the Japanese version.
I had a similar experience with this film. I wrote it off as low tier for so many years and barely rewatched it. But upon getting the Criterion Collection set a few years ago, I rediscovered M VS G. I love it more and more every time and it has quickly made it into the top tiers of my rankings. Best Showa film besides the original I think.
People always say they don't like the ending. I don't mind it, i think the larvae twins play a smarter battle, dodging Godzilla's atomic breath, waiting for the right time to string him up. The rest of the film, direction, cast, acting, the criticism of croney capitalism, the score, the effects, all great. One of the best Godzilla films.
This is probably the best Godzilla movie where Godzilla is the villain and needs to be stopped his theme that plays when he raids Nagoya goes so hard and is terrifying his design also looks menacing too and as for mothra she was pretty cool in this movie too she was fighting Godzilla to protect humanity and her egg she went out like a hero and her offspring successfully avenged her death
I watched this movie a ton as a kid. Ah the memories, also I really liked this design for Godzilla. I don't know why but I just love it. Sadly according to all the new comers brought in to the franchise, this can't be a masterpiece because every Godzilla movie after the original were crappy kids films. 🙃
Hi dude I’m a massive fan of u and Godzilla, Godzilla guy, and more kaiju content and I would love a giga bash timeline video. I’m a kid right now And I don’t really like this film either but the older I’m getting the more I’m liking it
My feelings towards this film weren’t the best. I mean, the fact that the King of the Monsters himself losing to 2 Mothra larve is just questionable. But after rewatching the film several times, I realised this is one of the best films that the Showa Era has presented. Also I cannot watch the film and not laugh at Godzilla clumsily destroying buildings by accident.

Ever wonder how that egg came out of Mothra's body?
maybe it's like Spore where the egg comes out small at first but then instantly expands?
Rebirth of Mothra finally showing it by having her doing that but with Spores fusing into one big egg @@jadinosaurus
@@jadinosaurus makes sense, one of the spore eggs does look like mothra's egg
Rebirth of mothra opening to see how it happens. You're welcome.

My fav showa movie aside from Ebirah horror of the Deep

10:29 Its a Brachiosaurus.... Sorry, me nerding out.
That triggered me too 😂
It didn’t bother me that much tbh.

One of the best Godzilla movies ever made!😁👍👍🦖🦋

I love mothra vs Godzilla so much i occasionally hum the theme song

Awesome review, I’m here before 1,000 views!
It has some of the best Impending Doom Music!!!
While I do think the original solo Mothra handles certain things better, Mothra vs Godzilla is one of the best of the whole franchise. Easily Top 5
