So if they mentioned a monster attacking New York who was Godzilla-like it’s possible that Cyber Godzilla attacking Tokyo in the series is canon to GMK’s timeline it’s just that GMK takes place before that occurred

Shusuke Kaneko really is the unsung hero of the kaiju genre. Not only did he save the Gamera franchise and direct some great Ultraman episodes, his work on Godzilla, even if it was only one movie, is so influential that both the Monsterverse and Minus One take direct inspiration from it.

In any case, for the followers here who don't know, I was on set for many of the Millennium Godzilla films and was on set almost daily for GMK. I wrote an in-depth book detailing the daily goings-on of the production at Toho Studios (as well as Gamera 3, G-2000, GXM). It's available from various outlets, with Amazon probably being the easiest way to find it.
This Movie really low-key saved the Franchise, it’s such a Gem, easily in the Top 3 Godzilla Movies of all time in my eyes. Right next to King of the Monsters and Shin Godzilla.
Keep in mind though, Minus One had $15 million to work with. That’s less than a quarter of what any Hollywood blockbuster is given. And yet it looks SOOOO much better than something like The Marvels.
Man, this is a banger of a kaiju profile video on a fan favorite Godzilla incarnation and design. GMK Godzilla is definitely one of the best Godzilla incarnations from the millennium era of films while portraying him as an evil menace and a destructive force of the supernatural. Ngl, this is probably the best edited kaiju profile on Godzilla behind FWgoji and Legendary goji.
GMK Godzilla is by far my favourite of the Millennium era incarnations. Every time i watch the movie, i always get goosebumps. He is just so threatening and has such presence in each scene that i only seen in the 1954 original.
You can see how this incarnation of Godzilla shares a lot of the same narrative building blocks as Minus One Goji. Lots of similar ideas, creating two very tonally different films. This is an action movie first, while Minus One Goji is a Horror movie first. It's incredible. Also hearing Yoshida was so absolutely delighted to be in his role makes me incredibly joyous. If only we all could enjoy our jobs that much.

Yes!!! It's finally here, I've been waiting for this for a long time, GMK Goji is one of my favorite versions of the character and it's a great example of evil Godzilla alongside Minus one. When I watch Minus one I always found Minus one Goji is very similar to GMK Goji.

I had no idea this was a second Godzilla. I kept thinking it was the original Godzilla that was brought back to life by all those restless souls that possessed him.
I think GMK Goji does still have the regenerative ability. If that weren't the case, the heart at the bottom of the sea wouldn't have started beating. It may not have been as potent as the healing abilities of Godzillas before and after, but it was still there.
A tangent but my headcanon is that This Godzilla isn't fully possessed(The souls controlling me sense), rather, he hears the wrathful moans of Japan's victims, including their own people whom they sent to their deaths in WW2 and vowed to avenge them.
Hot take: GMK Godzilla is one of the most heartbreakingly tragic depictions of Godzilla ever. Not only because Godzilla himself is technically possessed and is in zero control of his actions, but the spirits possessing him died in some of the most horrific ways you can’t possibly imagine. I'd say GMK is the perfect Godzilla movie. It gets the tone right and manages to make the kaiju look utterly believable while still being performed in the classic suit style.
I honestly thought this Godzilla was the very first Godzilla but was brought back to life by the vengeful souls, I never thought that this was a completely separate Godzilla that was just possessed by the vengeful spirits

Apparently when Godzilla was killed by the Oxygen Destroyer, his bones became possessed by the restless souls of the WWII victims. Godzilla slowly regenerated after nearly 4 decades and came back with a vengeance. The creature was no longer the same instinctual dinosaur that ravaged Japan in 1954 for the sake of territorial disputes, but rather a ravenous being focused only on bringing as much pain and suffering to others as possible. Also given the opening prologue from this film, that also means Godzilla The Animated Series and this film are indeed in the same canon. Anyway, this Godzilla is indeed 1954 Godzilla but brought back as a sorta zombie or ghost.

Think about a chimpanzee’s eyes compared to a great white shark’s eyes.
That is true, many sources give that to be the motivation for giving him white eyes in the first place! It is indeed mentioned in the video with the condensed line "...and completely white eyes, the latter intended to make Godzilla more frightening..." The concern about having them be *completely* white originates from Japanese Giants #9, pg. 25: "The completely white look of the eyes was the most contentious part of the maquette for Toho. Although this was intentionally done to emphasize the monster's anger and the supernatural slant to Godzilla's character, Toho/Tomiyama had some reservation. There was talk that advocates for the blind objected to the completely white eyes, as in Japan the blind are typically portrayed with white eyes. The concern about having them be *completely* white originates from Japanese Giants #9, pg. 25:
"The completely white look of the eyes was the most contentious part of the maquette for Toho. Although this was intentionally done to emphasize the monster's anger and the supernatural slant to Godzilla's character, Toho/Tomiyama had some reservation. There was talk that advocates for the blind objected to the completely white eyes, as in Japan the blind are typically portrayed with white eyes. Other concerns centered on how effectively the eyes would look when filmed."
