This is something I've wanted to do for a while, Halloween season felt like the perfect time for its release. GMK is one of my favorite Godzilla films, so I decided to revisit it with a fresh, in-depth look - closer to the style of my Showa Era videos. This is not a re-upload; it's a 99% new experience, with just a few early parts carried over from the original.
So dive in, enjoy, and Happy Spooky Season!
Notes/Corrections:
53:23 - As some have pointed out, the subtitles were based off the dub which changed the lines. More accurately, the woman interprets his good wishes into Japanese, and doesn’t add the “you’re all going to die.”
Thank you for the new video, Bill! Have a good day!
Happy Halloween season!
I saw the thumbnail & was worried it's a reup due to RUclips doing what RUclips does best. I'd watch it regardless.
And here I was, thinking "so what if it's a re-upload, I'll just watch it again."
You exceed my expectations, good sir.
THABK YOUUUUUUUU SO MUCH MY FAV MOVIE PLEASE CONTINUE THESE
I'm Japanese, but I watched your video while translating it. It was really wonderful. I've never seen a video in Japan that researched every detail of a work so deeply. When the footage of Shinohara Tomoe's past TV shows and Niyama Chiharu's commercials came on, I couldn't help but laugh at your thoroughness and enthusiasm. Thank you so much for making this video. If I may add, a woman evacuating from Yokohama is smiling carefree and waving her hands, saying to the military, "Soldiers, do your best! I believe in you!" I feel that this scene is an irony towards the Japanese people who have forgotten the horror of past wars and cannot even imagine the tragedies that will occur in the future.
Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed! That's an interesting interpretation of that Yokohama scene =], thank you for sharing!!

Thanks for the info. I always love to hear from a JP bro's perspective. Fandoms know no borders!
So many of us Americans are crazy for Godzilla. Thank you Japan. This is by far, the best Godzilla channel on RUclips
44:39 Thanks for including this part. Her Baragon roar is adorable, iconic, and a great piece of behind the scenes lore. Keep of the good work, Bill. Your Godzilla movie deep dives give justification to the existence of the internet.
This is why I’m here
Rie Ota must be protected as a national treasure for those cute roars
Sounds to me like she's really hamming it up.
She is precious and we love her
I was down vote the video if he didn't put the roar in
Thank you so much for citing my book throughout your video. It's highly appreciated.
Your video brought back a lot of fun memories. One thing: There's a story floating around in the West claiming that Tomoe Shinohara was used in GMK to elicit cheers from audience members who find her TV persona annoying. This couldn't be further from the truth. Director Kaneko used her in GMK due to her popularity with young women, and he even used her in his next film, "To Sing of Love." Moreover, Kaneko greatly respects his actors and wouldn't think of degrading them in such a way. I hope this recently created rumor gets laid to rest quickly.
Lastly, that quote in David K's book about the time Sano, Chiharu, and I watched KKvsG before shooting the Digital Q scenes originates with me. I'm pretty sure it's in my book too... It might come across as a bit of mansplaining by today's standards, but that wasn't how Sano expressed it to Chiharu. A lot of males in Japan also don't understand this part of Tsuburaya's tokusatsu philosophy. He would have defended Tsuburaya in the same way to a man as he did to Chiharu.
Thank you so much, Norman, and even more importantly, thank you for writing your book. I could feel a deep sense of sentimentality in your reflections on your time behind the scenes. Also, thank you for clarifying the Tomoe Shinohara scene and the Sano story. I have a bit of a silly question: did Kaneko ever mention if this Godzilla was meant to be the resurrected version of the original, or are they supposed to be two different creatures? That was always the one thing about this movie I wondered about.
Regardless, thank you again for watching and leaving the comment!
@@BigActionBill I figured it would have been a crime not to write the book considering how forthcoming all the staffers were (and still are). Just wish it hadn't taken me 20 years to write. lol
You know, I never thought to ask Kaneko your question. My instincts tell me it's a different Godzilla but I'll ask him next time I see him.
@@normancengland It's tremendous, so better late than never! Thank you!!
I love it when the sources come out confirming 100% and elaborating further
We're down to one Godzilla suit actor😢😢😢. I had the opportunity to meet all three at New York Comic-Con back in 2015, but a portion of my spending budget was spoken for so i ended up only meeting Haruo Nakajima🙏🏾🕊
So happy my second favorite Godzilla film got re-edited/researched video from you! Thank you Bill and will definitely watch it fully later
I’m glad you pointed out all the numerous parallels to Godzilla ‘98 in this film. There are so many. But what I like about the fact they referenced the ‘98 film so much is they actually tried to make all of the references important to the plot. They aren’t shoehorned into the film, but deliberately there to show how the ‘98 film could have used these plot points better.
One of the rare times Ghidorah was a good guy. Also this is the scariest looking Godzilla.
I still think this is the only good guy ghidorah iteration if you don't count Mecha King Ghidorah.
Just finished watching every Godzilla movie in chronological order, and these videos exploring the history of each film in such depth have been an amazing supplement. Incredible content!
Bill, right before Godzilla charges his atomic breath, he outright sneers at the crowd. This godzilla was an absolute bastard.
Lmao you’re right
Definitely one of the scariest Godzillas to look at. Maybe Shin is scarier, but I guess it's all subjective!
Thank god I wasn’t the only who noticed his snarl like he’s disgusted to look at them humans
@PopSmashCult yeah but if you put your ear up to Shin's head, you would hear a dial tone (not much happening in there).
With Gmk Goji, you would hear the gnashing and wailing of angy souls.
Spookiest Godzilla for the spooky season
the suit actors roaring is just delightful and I'd honestly watch an entire kaiju movie where all the monster roars are just the suit actors' roars.
You sir. Are a God send. We appreciate your work
Thanks! 🎉the absolute GOAT of Godzilla content 🙏
Very nice words, thank you very much for watching and the superchat! =]
A remake of your GMK video is perfect for celebrating Halloween
ME: okay, time for bed...
BIG ACTION BILL: Not so fast, buck-o! I have a new video!
ME: No, I'm sleepy! Yet intrigued!
lmao
No question, my favorite Godzilla film. And I’m glad to see so many references to Norman’s book!
BAB-Can’t thank you enough for your content. Seriously, this is incredible work you’ve done here! Also, GMK is my favorite G-film, so I could watch information on it 24/7, and yours is by far the best!
53:35 as a note on the Chinese guy and Japanese lady, the original translation is more literal, as he wishes them good luck, and the Japanese gal translates it simply as “he says good luck!” The “you’re all gonna die” part is purely a creation of the dub as an attempt at humor, and sadly the Blu Ray uses more direct lines from the dub than actual translations for the subtitles. The “dubtitles” are a major problem for a lot of the later Godzilla films, especially the Millennium series.
Honestly this movie really deserves a proper upscale re-release with accurate subtitles.
I also look forward to these updated videos
Amazing, one of the best YT Channels 💙
The one nice thing that came about with the weird way the movies got paired for blu ray release in the USA is that GMK, and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla came paired together. You can prefer one over the other, but they are, without question, the two best of the Millenium era.
GMK is my favorite Godzilla movie of the millennium era Godzilla movies. Bill, if you’re reading this, I enjoyed your updated video on the history of this movie providing new facts about the production. Keep up the excellent work, you haven’t disappointed me.
Awesome video! Your Godzilla videos are probably the most informative and entertaining on RUclips, I’m glad you’re remaking some of your old stuff.
This works both as a Halloween special and a celebration of the series turning a fresh 70 years old! Good stuff bill!
Always love seeing expanded videos from you, though I am a little sad to see all the older Goji videos you’ve made go away.. have you ever thought about throwing them in a playlist where all the old/outdated ones can be preserved? It’s been an amazing ride seeing how this channel has evolved over time and how the Godzilla content and deep dives has continually been flushed out further and further, and I’d love to be able to turn back the clock to see those old videos again and truly see how much they’ve changed
That’s a good idea. I think if I ever did something like that it would be in the form of me just pointing out the mistakes in them maybe lol. I appreciate you watching my older stuff and I hope the product has improved.
@@BigActionBill I think it better if you just unlisted the old version, and then put its link in the description of the new version
I do miss the "Ohhh noo noo noo... HAHAHAHA" meme from when Godzilla tailslaps Baragon and sends him flying in the old version of this video. That was a gem haha.
The product has definitely improved Bill! But as with most progress, some things are lost along the way.
@@Headless_Bill hahaha the OHNONONO part...I debated keeping it in, but one of the issues I thought the last video had was that there were too many random gags, and I thought some of the memes would feel dated years later, I went with a more chill approach this time lol.
@@BigActionBill Solid my dude.
Gmk will probably always be my favorite Godzilla movie. Even minus one couldn't beat it for me
same
@@marlonclark-ky6ub nice
I had the pleasure of meeting Rie ota at G-fest this year. She didn’t speak English but she was very nice. (She also signed a Baragon figure for me!)
Fantastic in depth analysis as always Bill! I remember when I first heard that both Gmk and Megagurius were going to premiere on the scifi channel back in 2003 I immediately scheduled to have the day off at my first job to record and watch them at home lol. Even though they were heavily edited I still had an absolute blast watching them which held me over until I was able to buy them on dvd in 2004
Bill is back is that big ass action. I live for these damn videos man always great as hell I rewatch the whole series over and over like it’s a show
This is amazing, I hope you do updates like this for the rest of your Heiesei and Millennium era films
Always Happy to see one of these videos pop up on my feed and can't wait for the next one! Keep up the amazing work!
The return of the king
44:31
That is cute to know and hear that at least some of the suit actors did their own little roars. 😍🥰
This is one of the greatest Godzilla films of all time! I actually felt bad when The Big G gave Baragon the worst beat down I've ever seen!
Thank you for this video!
With Godzilla's 70th Anniversary coming in 3 Weeks this is to take my time to Watch this REMASTER of GMK thank you and Happy Halloween Bill 🎃.
Did you know that Tim Burton visited the set of Godzilla Vs Mothra in 1992?
It´s always a pleasure watch your videos about Godzilla
Ohh this is a great day !
Your breakdowns make me love these movies even more!
Thank you so much for this hey
Honestly made my week with this! GMK is by far my fav goji film of the series!
This is my favorite 90's/early 2000's Godzilla film. For those of us who love a Grim-zilla film, this is top-notch. The score especially is very strong. A nice, long look at this film, such as this video, is well-deserved.
Absolutely best channel on youtube and u were mentioned in several big name channels. Please do Shin godzilla. I've asked every video for the last 15 videos. PLEASE 🙏 🙏 🙏
hahaha thank you! Shin is coming eventually for sure.
Been binge watching your videos dude and I must say that these videos are awesome! I appreciate your content!
Whoop you know how I was waiting this to be uploaded! Thank you! 🙏🏻
Anpther great video my friend, keep up the great work! 🦖
nice bro! welcome back bill, love these updated videos btw
Miss these, good to see again
I've seen this video multiple times over, and I'm still impressed every time I do. The amount of research and effort put into this video alone is incredible. Fantastic job.
This one is right up there with Minus One for me.
welcome back bill
I was so excited when this popped up in my feed!!! I love your videos, and GMK is my favorite Godzilla movie. So I was sad that your retrospective was so short. First thought I was just getting recommended your old video until I looked at the length. Can't wait to watch this!
I’m really impressed with the effort and thoroughness in this series . Great job
Seeing this suit at the Hibiya exhibit this summer was amazing. It only deepened my love for this film and the design. To see how he towered over the other Millennium Era suits really put into perspective his size.
Another knockout video!
I watched your first video on this movie twice, and the improvements you made here are smooth and excellent.
Love the re-working of the video. GMK is in my top five Godzilla movies.
Already blown away by the knowledge that Kaneko directed GMK, the infamous 90's gamera Trilogy AND Crossfire. All incredible movies!
Rie Ota has the most adorable roaring session XD OwO
Wonderful, this is my first major upload since discovering this channel so I'm definitely enjoying this update. Keep it up.
🤦Only just saw this in my feed. Thought I was subbed to your channel (had only saved a playlist of yours) so that's rectified now. Already gave it a 👍even though I'm just about to start watching it... as I already know the quality of your work.
GMK, while being my 3rd fave film of the franchise, it's 100% my favorite version of Gojira. The slap down of the crane sets the tone perfectly for what's to come. Can't wait to tuck in to this! 😁🍿
Just popped in to hear Ota's BTS roar
godzilla really sounds the way people describe cats when people describe him "ruthless and uncaring about anything that gets in his way"
Ive been waking up and putting on a BAB video every morning for the past weekthis is such a welcome surprise!
Happy Halloween Bill.
*Sees BAB uploaded*
"Nice."
*Sees the video is **1:17:57*
"Nice!"
*Sees BAB has revisited GMK*
"Very nice, BAB-arino!"
This was one of the first Godzilla movies I ever watched. It holds a special place in my heart as the movie that made me realize how scary Godzilla could actually be as a monster.
This is the bear birthday present anyone has ever given me! Dropping this video is EXACTLY what I needed today. Thank you good sir
I actually got to meet Rie Ota at G-Fest this year, had her sign my Godzilla visual history book and got a photo with her. She seemed really nice.
I love your content my dude. Keep up the insightful work.
1:08:10 - I always liked this, because it visually shows that both Baragon and Mothras souls were absorbed by Ghidorah, and even the combined efforts of all three werent enough to stop Godzilla. We see Mothras soul/energy get absorbed on screen, granting Ghidorah his flight. Many however miss the implications that baragons soul already found its way to Ghidorah, which is how Ghidorah was able to burrow/dig its way to the battle, and again why Baragons soul also manifests alongside the other two. Baragon was part of that final battle, just in a different way.
Also love how the Guardians souls seem to be tied to those little statues too, as everytime they are disturbed one of the monsters wakes up / resurfaces
I have been watching your video's three years from now, keep posting some BANGER video's.
Perfect timing for my Godzilla night
My personal favourite godzilla movie this gives me T2 judgement day vibes, Definitely the most perfect godzilla movie ever. Even than 1954 and -1.0 because of shusuke kaneko and his magnum opus, the gamera trilogy
GMK Goji design is my personal favourite including his brutal personality, Legendary goji comes second after this for me
1:01:46 I’m so glad you said this cause that’s my exact thought. When I think of this movie this is my favorite scene. It hits just right, the chills.. It’s satisfying knowing you and I share the same opinion of it. EDIT: 1:02:33 is such an amazing shot. Could have done just a flat side angle but the fisheye lens sort of affect really dramatizes the power to me (in an awesome way)
Good stuff man! No one dives in to these like you
I remember being surprised at a lot of things in this movie: Ghidorah as a "good guy", the supernatural element and the "vengeful spirits of war victims" angle. It was a big swing and while it's not as brilliant as, say, Minus One, it comes off pretty well.
Awesome. You uploaded on my day off.
Recently watched this movie. I love the villain/monster design of Godzilla. Adding the fangs and eyes with no pupils made a really menacing Godzilla.
At 3:42 am my time my life was blessed with another banger video
@45:04 *haHHAHhaH! i LOVE IT SO MUCH!*
Other than '54 GMK is my absolute favorite Godzilla film & I really enjoyed this deep-dive into it.
Thank you so much!
16:20 Funfact: this man wasnt supposed to be part of the film
He was just some random man that was keep staring at that actress while the were filming in that forest
And since he didnt wanted to leave, they deciced to make him part of the movie
Lmao
This was one of the first Godzilla films I've ever seen so it holds a soft spot in my heart. It is so different compared to the others and to take Ghidorah and put him in the protagonist/neutral role and make Godzilla the villain is a very interesting choice
This was my first Godzilla movie and ever since I’ve watched the film, it’s been my favorite Godzilla film. It holds so much nostalgia power compared to other Godzilla films.
I never noticed the 98 Zilla similarities, I liked Final wars better along with Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo S.O.S., I'd rate GMK as second favourite
I got the new encyclopedia and love it! It was neat to see the book referenced in the video, which, as all your videos....is amazing!
The illustrations are tremendous
A meaningful video about a meaningful Godzilla film. Thank you and keep up the great work!
I love how just plain TERRIFYING this movie makes Godzilla. He feels like this overwhelming unstoppable force, towering over all the other kaiju and being completely and utterly ruthless in his destruction. The dude's a complete menace and I love it, he did NOT have to do the lady in the hospital dirty like that.
Thanks, Bill! Another piece of The Definitive Gojimentary. 10/10 fricheks
This is the first godzilla movie i ever watched
Great analysis from my personal tied-for-favorite Godzilla film. GMK Godzilla used to be one of my least favorites, but now I have the Spiral Studios model sitting next to me, and the film itself is one of the best Godzilla films and an actual good film in general. I wish Kaneko was given another chance to do a big budget Godzilla film, I'd love to see what he comes up with.
Baragon is my fiancé’s favorite kaiju. She has so much Baragon merch and last year she was so excited to meet Rie Ota at G-Fest. Will always give this amazing movie credit for helping me get my fiancé into Godzilla!
The eyes for Godzilla in this film are phenomenal
I love your "The History of Godzilla" videos.
Still one of my favorite G films, I love how evil he is, the supernatural element is weird and cool and the white eyes are perfect. Also love the remake of the hill shot
GMK is my favorite film of the millennium series, and one of my favorite G-films of all time.
Return of the king!
Another banger. Thank you, my man.
My thanks good sir. Gmk is my favorite of the millennium series possibly of all time
This might still be my all time favorite Godzilla movie.
Man, You're the best tokusatsu/Godzilla youtuber imo...!!!
your vids are really cool companion pieces to each movie, really cool work!
