This was my first Godzilla film. found it in a DVD store in Northern Ontario in 2005. my dad who remembered Godzilla from when he was a kid watched it with me Good Times
Apparently the reason why Toho declined the offer for a Godzilla vs Gamera movie was because they would have to share the profits with Kadokawa, and since they knew that more people would watch the movie for Godzilla, they would be providing the more marketable monster and get payed the same amount as Kadokawa, so they said no. All because they didn’t want to share
It was also a bit of ruthless businessman-ship. Think about the many Japanese and International imitators Godzilla had. There was Reptilicus, Yonggary, Gappa, Pulgasari, Gorgo and Gamera. Godzilla outlasted and outshined all of them. Nearly all of them have been sort of left in the dustbin of the history books. Gamera proved to have the most staying power...12 films, which is the only non-Toho Kaiju to bolster such a large roster of films. So...Toho is somewhat shrewd. Doing Godzilla vs Gamera "elevates" Gamera, and sort of concedes that Gamera is on the same level of Godzilla. They don't want to admit that or concede that. They want Godzilla to stand above all others. There is a rumor that Godzilla defeating Kong in Godzilla vs Kong might even have been "Toho mandated"...they want Godzilla on a pedestal above all other monsters. If you think that the title of "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" and the final scene of other monsters literally bowing to Godzilla isn't a MASSIVE ego-boost for Toho, then you are delusional. So sure, for a few years they make people mad by never putting Gamera on the level of Godzilla. But look where we are at now. Godzilla has a successful Hollywood franchise, and Gamera hasn't had a film in 16 years. Gamera just might slowly spiral down into obscurity as Godzilla continues to thrive and persevere as the one giant monster above all others. That is exactly what Toho wants.
@@creategreatness8823 perhaps, and it's incredibly selfish. Besides, Gamera is about to make a comeback with an anime series on Netflix. So he's not completely forgotten and that Heisei trilogy will always be some of the best kaiju movies and Gamera's only good movies that keep him remembered by fans.
In one of the godzilla super complete works books released for the film the director confirmed the two are father and son. With the present day Godzilla being his kid who survived the castle bravo blast but the 54 Godzilla never finding out a part of his family made it out alive. It definitely changes the conflict of the original Godzilla, with him being a victim and a grieving father who lost his whole family to castle bravo.

Tezuka is such a g for admitting that he regretted not having a scene where Yumiko Shaku is in a swim suit. He just like me fr. Also Yumiko Shaku also voiced acted in the Pokemon movie with Latios and Latias as one of the villains!
I love this movie...because it is basically the exact same team behind "Godzilla vs Megaguirus" taking the exact same basic plot and character structure of that film...and just remaking it with a TON of improvements. Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla is the same exact film as Godzilla vs Megaguirus just with better character arcs, a tighter and smarter screenplay, a more realistic super weapon, a better adversary for Godzilla, better production value and visuals, and improved pacing, editing, and structure. It is a much better execution of the exact same concept.
How on earth did the studio that pioneered the practical effects of the genre manage to fuck up the practical effects in the 1954 flashback so badly that, most likely, everyone on the planet thought they used terrible CGI? It blows my mind to have learned that they used an actual suit for that sequence because it absolutely does NOT look like one!
They really should’ve used stock footage for the flashback scenes. This was the one time they should’ve used stock footage, but for some reason they tried to just recreate the original suit.
Love the detailing on the soundtrack info.. This is undoubtedly one of the most underrated Godzilla soundtracks of all time. Synonymous with Godzilla's approach in my head for nearly a decade+ =)

I dont' think I saw it mentioned here, but Nurse Tsujimori is actually an even sillier reference because on Kudo's computer that he uses to fix Dimension Tide at the end of Vs. Megaguirus, he has a little avatar he created that's a nurse, and he named her Kiriko, after the lead who he clearly had a crush on. So, this was a pretty funny reference to that.
Big Action Bill thank you for bringing up Godzilla vs. Gamera. The reason why Toho said no because they were afraid that Gamera was gonna win because everyone knows he's the friend to all children/guardian of the universe anyway.
Great video! This one (and the Godzilla suit attached to it) was always one of my favorites growing up. It was one of the rare times my parents bought a new Goji film on DVD right as it came out. The atomic breath rocks in this movie. Also, up until the release of GvK, Kiryu was my all-time favorite Mechagodzilla.
I love this Film. I'm glad that this is the Godzilla Film I was Born with. Back in 2002 my father showed me all of the Godzilla Films as I was growing up. This one is definitely one of my favorites. My absolute favorite tho has to be Godzilla Final Wars it's a love letter to the whole Franchise, it's action packed and just pure insane. One of the absolute best in the series.

Sorry for what happened to the original upload. I hope this one is able to stay up as this is my favorite Godzilla movie and I know you must have put a lot of effort into this video like you always do.
I absolutely love this film and the one that follows it and yeah love it when my boy roars you see a nice simple moment of Mecha Godzilla’s head movement and I just love that shoot almost like he recognizes that sound for some reason right before we zoom into him and see flash backs to other films him going nuts and that shuttle twitch of his hand before attacking and going on a rampage till he powers down

I like this one. It's just a well executed if somewhat traditional Godzilla film. Nothing outside what you expect in a Godzilla Movie, but has everything you need for a good monster beat down. Plus I adore the Kiryu design. I certainly like it far better than that abominable Godzilla vs Kong design. I may still give the '74 suit the edge just on Nostalgia points. But not by much. Kiryu is probably the best new designed and executed Kaiju of the Millennium Era.

It's too bad that all three of Tezuka's films follow basically the exact same pattern and beats. This is really a remake of megaguirus. And Tokyo SOS hit many of the same beats and ideas as well. But the music was great in all three and they all have some nifty effects, even if the stories were very repetitive and pedestrian at best. One thing you touched on here was something that the people who do special effects at Toho had to contend with, and that was the attempt by the studio to save money by having them do more sequences at night. After 1992's Godzilla versus mothra, Koichi Kawakita was told by the studio to reduce any daylight battle sequences to save Toho money on the electric bill. Toho was well known to try and squeeze any and every penny out of the production. Probably the worst example of this was on Godzilla versus destroyah, where they reduced the special event shooting Days by 10 days, gave them only 3 weeks post-production, and actually, against Kawakita wishes, cut some special effects in that were not even fully completed and composited. Yikes. Nice review on this however!
