I actually prefer this one over Against Mechagodzilla.
I absolutely adore the portrayal of Mothra here. From the design, to her role in the overall story, this is pretty much the perfect Mothra portrayal in my eyes. She’s got a nice mix here of the more mysterious and fierce nature of the Showa incarnation, while carrying over the more gentle and mythological aspects of the Heisei version. This Mothra feels like a perfect mix of both, and the heavy ties to the original Mothra film really makes this feel like Mothra’s sequel, almost more than it does a Godzilla/Kiryu sequel.

The reason that Godzilla attacks in the beginning of GxM is because the JXSDF is transporting the skeleton of the original G from the ocean (they salvage the remains and put inside the cargo container). That's why Godzilla is drawn.

    • @CL-pd9cp

They had an advantage with this mothra that they never had before. By this point wire removal technology had progressed far enough that it was much more easily used even in the reduced budget and time frame of a Godzilla film. So they could use anchoring wires under the Mothra as well as wires above and below the wings and move the wings much more fluidly, while still preventing the wires from being seen. Wire removal technology really didn't become available for Godzilla films until the 2000s and the millennium era. It's always a painstaking process, but the technology improved enough that it became feasible. I agree it's a beautiful Mothra and along with the one from The rebirth of Mothra series my favorite, although I do love the very feminine more gentle looking one from 1992 as well.

If you keep the same characters as the last movie, then a lot of the work of building them is already done. It saves more screen time for interesting things with monsters or real drama.
You would also have a character with a personal relationship to Kiryu, which gives the idea of dismantling it to return godzilla to the ocean some more personal dramatic weight.
    Really does make no sense.

It really was a little frustrating to see watching these two movies back to back. I didn't expect to like the human characters in the first movie as much as I did, so to see Asake essentially get shafted and Dr. Yuhara and Sarah not even being mentioned soured me to this movie. Which is a shame seeing as how the fights themselves were still very good.

    Hello Big Action Bill!
First of all, thank You very much for Your awesome series of videos about the Godzilla movies.
The wealth of information and background knowledge contained in your videos is really impressive!
In one of your videos about a film from the 60s, you mention that in Germany the film titles often contain the name Frankenstein, although neither the character from the novel nor the character from the Keiju Eiga film is included.
I am from Germany and have been a big fan of the Keiju Eiga films since I was a child and can confirm the use of the name Frankenstein in the film titles. That was a promotional ploy in the 60s and 70s because the name Frankenstein is very well known in this country as the name of a monster. The consequence of this, of course, is that the film title no longer makes sense.
But the name King Kong has also been "misused" several times. In the 1973 film "Godzilla vs. Megalon", "Jet Jaguar" was named "King Kong".
In the 1974 film "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla", "Mechagodzilla" was named "King Kong". The film itself is titled "King Kong versus Godzilla".
While I mention these two films, your videos about the films from 1966 up to and including 1975, which can also be seen in the playlist that you show in the video about "Godzilla Final Wars", are unfortunately no longer in the playlist contain. Could you upload these videos again? That would be great.
By the way, here are two videos with the Mothra song:

I was expecting just another monster bash, but that ending really threw off for a loop.
1954 Godzilla has been suffering in pain, and has lashed out in rage. We always see that creature as a monster of pure evil and devastation, unstoppable furry.
But as Kiryu it saw that in this Godzilla, and offered a way to peace and rest.
The one known for anguish offered a helping hand to another monster.

If I had to rank the Mothra Songs, being every song sung by the Shobijin, so Sacred Springs, Mahara Mosura, Mothra's Song, etc. ( Not counting FW because if I forgot a Mothra song then it probably wasn't that good then ) it would look like this:
1: Heisei: All 3 of the main 3 songs are just amazing.
2: Showa: Elegant, slow and steady. Sacred Springs is easily my favorite of the 3 main songs in this series.
3: RoM: Specifically the song sung in Big Battle from RoM 3. It's very unique compared to the endless amounts of basic Mothra's Songs we get. The Mothra's Song from The Task Ahead and Mothra Battles Ghidorah is great as well, and Death and Rebirth is amazing and beautiful.
4: KoTM: It is just so grand. However, I would like a version with lyrics, even if it didn't appear in the film, like the no guitar version of "Bio Wars" from Godzilla vs. Biollante
5: Millenium: Overall pretty good, has a air of tension and finality.
( If you're wondering why GMK isn't here, it is not a remake of any previous Mothra song, and has no lyrics sung by the Shobijin or any equivalent. I'd put it at 3 or 4. )

I particularly love this one, is my favorite movie of the whole saga, and I'd liked to see sequels to this universe, rather than having FW. I love Godzilla's look, I love Kiryu, I sort of like even Chujo and the girl character, the scenes are cool and emotional and the soundtrack is awesome. It's a simple movie, the fight takes most of the part, but it works very fine

    Great review!
    1. Cinematography was good: crisp, sharp.
    2. Much better FX.
    3. Mothra looks great flying.
    4. Mothra larva look better.
    5. Jets and rockets looked good.
    6. Godzilla Girls top-notch!! ❤
    7. Story a bit redundant with Mecha G, but it was okay.
    8. The sets looked good.
    9. Godzilla water-surge was impressive.

In the GXM super complete works book the director confirmed the present godzilla is the biological son of the original. Tomoyuki Tanaka's backstory of Godzilla losing his family during castle bravo was made canon after putting the flashback of the castle bravo blast when the memories of the first godzilla emerge. Its implied the rage of losing his family, destroying tokyo, and the final moments of grief and rage while being killed by the oxygen destroyer mixed with Godzilla's roar are what woke up its soul in kiryu.

I remember I had a joke with a fellow Godzilla fan. Which Tezuka Godzilla film starts with a really cool Kaiju sequence, features a military personnel who feels guilt and a need to prove themselves, has the super weapon fail and only they can make it work again so that they can attack Godzilla, seemingly going on a suicidal mission to stop Godzilla only to somehow survive miraculously, and stare off as the sunset at the end of the film.
    The answer, all of them..lol.
That's said, beautiful music and some outstanding effects even if the story is rather meh and the characters feel like shallow clones of real human beings and characters we've seen before. It's a great film to pop in and watch all the Godzilla scenes however. But one question? How could two Mothra larva swim all the way from infant Island to Tokyo in what seems to be less than half an hour? Apparently infant island is in the middle of tokyo bay😁

I wonder if they've given any thought to, instead of producing movies, producing something more like a Godzilla mini-series where there might be more time to explore both human and monster back-stories in a little more detail. Maybe they should test out a Netflix, HBO or Amazon mini-series based on the characters where Godzilla might have a minor skirmish with one or two other monsters per episode - then they could pivot back to the free-for-all summer blockbuster with all of them based on those stories. While the action is obviously centered around the monsters and not the human characters, there is some story telling necessary and they potentially could use it to build the franchise through online delivery. The stories have to matter to some extent if you're trying to sustain a franchise from one generation to the next. The canon doesn't have to be perfect, or as massive as Star Wars or Star Trek...but it could be. Movies seem to be ironically constraining for such huge characters like Godzilla; 2 hours isn't enough time to really tell the story AND show the action.

...Good luck on the last Millennium movie for Godzilla. Heard it was mixed feelings on how good it was from fans, but mainly on the bad side save for only how Godzilla can kick ass really fast or epically in that last film.

The director once said that Kiryu might be the father of the current Godzilla. They don't confirm it, but he did say that's a valid interpretation. It'd explain a lot.

    • @Kaiju-bm4ts
      @Kaiju-bm4ts Год назад +1

He should of just made that statement canon, therefore godzilla would have a actual motivation for attacking Japan because without that interpretation, he's just attacking because the plot demands him to do so.

    I really enjoyed Tokyo S.o.s
The continuation of the theme of life and living with the time nature gave us and to die as nature intends is a profound message.
Life is important but you can't have life without death. There must be balance.
While the characters weren't as interesting or fleshed out they're not the worst in the Godzilla series.
I got the idea that Kiryu wasn't made out of evil intentions, moreso it was made to protect japan and by extent the world.
Whereas MechaGodzilla in GVK 2Ø21 was made to kill godzilla and be the apex species again.
It's fun to go from Kiryu to the egg carriers in final wars
Still able to defend ourselves just not with the bones of the souls of the dead.
Kiryu's design is so slick and cool
The sounds are satisfying and the spectacle of these two titans fighting is amazing.
💜🤖🦖🖤 I would still recommend this to people especially back to back after Godzilla against mechagodzilla

yeah, i generally like the kiryu saga as well, i think both these movies had a interesting new take on mechagodzilla having the bones of the original godzilla and having some form of intelligence. i can agree the special effects were well done in these movies. i can also agree they should of kept the same characters from MxG, i really liked akane and wished they developed her relationship with kiryu more
