I haven't watched the original review but I remember seeing the thumbnailI recommended a few times on the phone. I came across this and I was wondering "Didn't he already do this movie?" Then I hovered over it on my Xbox and the first thing I see on the preview is the abominable snowman. 🖕🤬🖕And on top of that, it was projected on my wall, taking up most of the space.
I was thinking, "didn't I just see this?" Also, while I am here. I recommend the original Godzilla n the un-Americanized format. Watched that last night, and it's great. (free on YT currently) I didn't know that existed until watching your vid, and wondering where Burr was. Thanks for this series!
I appreciate you bringing up that Raymond Burr fought to keep Godzilla Returns ( 85 ) from being made into a parody. I've never been his biggest fan, but he's got my respect for realizing and appreciating the importance of the original Godzilla. It really does put his role in the original localization in a much better light. I'm just starting out watching your content and I'm very much enjoying it. Thank you for all the hard work and diligence.
Very interesting to learn about Raymond Burrs and his appreciation of Godzilla as an idea. Thank you for the content, thoroughly enjoying your History of Godzilla series.
Haruo Nakajima the original Godzilla actor also gave praise to Burr. Nakajima wasn't always happy playing Godzilla. The suit being very heavy and getting very hot but Burr appearing on set and cheering him on was a bright spot for him. Something that left an lasting impact on him up to his death.
The end of this movie always made me cry as a child, Godzilla was my hero and to see him fall into the Volcano screaming in fear was so upsetting. Raymond Burrs speech along with the Prime Minister almost crying sums up the message of this film and the original perfectly. Definitely giving this one a watch again soon
Thank you for posting your reaction to the end of this movie. I was 6 when I saw it for the first time and cried as well. After all these years, it’s still a compelling ending.
I got to see this as a kid during it's original American theatrical release. As a huge G fan who had watched them only on TV up until that point, seeing a brand new Godzilla film in the theater really was one of those life-long memorable events. And I absolutely cried at the end when he falls into the volcano and screams that horrible, pained scream. my parents were legitimately surprised by my strong emotional reaction, and, against character, didn't chide me for it or anything. It's far from the best G film, but it holds a special place in my heart.
Raymond Burr's quote at the end of this movie is one of my favorite Godzilla quotes. Just love that Burr understood Godzilla and didn't dismiss him like many have.
God bless Mr. Burr for saving the dignity of the US production! (I had no idea he wrote that speech!) An area the US version improved upon: the soundtrack. The end credits gave Big-G a serious, sombre orchestral score, much more befitting him than the ghastly pop-song the Japanese inexplicably used.
Godzilla 85 was the first Godzilla film I ever saw and STILL is my personal favorite of the franchise (even though Return is overall, the better film). I LOVE the final speech by Burr's character, at the end. Thank you for making this video! Subbed!

Glad to watch this video again. Return of Godzilla (in it's Americanized version) was the first Godzilla film I ever saw, not counting the 1998 movie anyway, my local video store had the VHS and I rented it so often that I nearly wore it out so they just let me keep it. Still one of my favorites in the franchise, I remember being absolutely enthralled with it & it's probably largely responsible for sending me down the rabbit hole of Kaiju movies.
It was also my first, at the time the American version was the the only Godzilla movie they had available in my small town Washington state movie store. Little did I know that VHS would be so rare later
Hey bill just wanna say that now the series is finally updated and complete, in spite of it all I always find myself back here. The true reignition of that radioactive flame that had me loving godzilla as a kid. Thank you!
Godzilla was the first thing I was ever a 'fan' of when I was a kid. Like 5 years old, planting my narrow little ass in front of the TV - on the floor as close as I could get without my mother yelling at me about ruining my eyes...to watch all the Toho classics. I got to see Rodan, Gamera movies, Ultraman movies, weird giant cavemen (a blue one vs a yellow one, I think?) fighting movies...all kinds of weird, awesome Kaiju films. But Godzilla was by far my favorite, and they showed more Godzilla movies than any of the others. Gamera came in second, probably. Two movies every Saturday, back to back. Sunday was karate movies, sadly. I became obsessed with Godzilla, and I'll be 54 in a month...and I'm still obsessed.
I saw Godzilla ‘85 in the theaters as a kid. I’ll admit I cried when he screeches as he falls into the volcano. Then I had to wait years waiting for Godzilla vs. Biollante to see how he came back.
Dude yes! As a kid watching it on VHS, the scream felt so ugly that I cried. However, the scene of the misty pond where its all quiet then all of a sudden all you here is godzilla's growl as he's walking up to the power plant was the scariest part for me. I would sometimes fast forward past that part.
Your video reminded me of something in my life regarding this movie. Back in the mid-90's, I was a government contractor for BPS and did telecommunication work for the US Air Force and my team was assigned to work with the Russian Govt and the US Air Force in setting up new communications networks in the field to help the Russians track and locate stolen radiactive materials taken from mostly abandoned mobile nuclear missle launchers. Anyway, we had to work on Russian soil for 2-years and I had taken several movies with me, as well as my VCR to help pass the time. One time, we watched Godzilla 1985 in a lounge (sort of a large break room). I had seen both the Japanese version and the US version and I love the US Version more. I asked them point blank..."If Godzilla appeared in Japanese territory (on land or in the sea), would Russia launch a nuclear attack on the monster if they believed it to be a geniuine threat?". Their response was unanimous..."Yes!!!" One of the Commanding officers I had to liason with made the point..."If such a creature were real and posed a real threat then "Yes". We would do a pre-emptive attack, probably nuclear, while the monster was preferably not on Russian soil." He also said that once the monster had been identified, the Russian military would have deployed their subs and ships, as well as planes to track the monster and formulate attack plans. So when you see the portrayal of the Russians in "Godzilla 1985" its probably more on the nose that most would think. BTWwhen my team and I were in Russia, it was sometimes awesome (for the parties) but then nerve racking because we were watched and monitored by (2) teams (a day team and a night team) and we were on a curfew of 9pm when we first went there. One day, one of Russian liasons told me that they (The Russian Security forces, formerly the KGB) thought I was the most boring American they had ever surveilled because I never drank, I never smoked, and never had a Russian woman/lover. lol. I joked with them that I was secretly a CIA agent and that I had photographic memory. That way when I would see their maps (for where we had to run copper to trench for our communications work) I could draw those maps for the CIA later. It was just a joke. Except they didn't take it that way. One day, I was detained and questioned one and off for four hours and was told to "Keep those sort of jokes to myself." LOL. Anyway, love your videos!
Nature has a way sometimes of reminding man of just how small he is. She occasionally throws up the terrible offspring of our pride and carelessness to remind us of how puny we really are in the face of a tornado, an earthquake or a Godzilla. The reckless ambitions of man are often dwarfed by their dangerous consequences. For now, Godzilla-that strangely innocent and tragic monster-has gone to earth. Whether he returns or not or is never again seen by human eyes, the things he has taught us remain.
Loving the channel. Been a fan of the films as far back as I can remember (the '60s onward!) Of course, all of the main films get covered eventually, so I hope you dig around and keep the fine videos coming one way or another. One I would like to see here is "King Kong Escapes", as I saw that one over and over again in the early '70s at our local screen. To this day, it's still one of my favorites.
Remember seeing a video with an interview with Raymond Burr and how he said he’s been a fan of Godzilla and got into how he respected the meaning of what Godzilla was and to be taken serious. On a lighter note: Steve Martin had commented one time that he was looking into possibly doing a comedy monster movie where he plays a reporter named Raymond Burr.
Return of Godzilla is great. It's epic, loud and imposing. A beautiful return to form for the King of the monsters. Though his design would change for the rest of his Heisei run, it's interesting to see some design similarities like the row of scales on his head to his back then getting refined to what I would consider the quintessential Godzilla design. Most modern audiences would recognize Legendary's as The Godzilla. But I always keep coming back to the Heisei being the most recognizable. 🖤🦖💜
The Super X is shielded from Godzilla’s blast only when it is in compact mode. Godzilla blasted it while the missile launcher was open. That’s why it took damage. Great video.
I was fortunate enough to see this in the theater with my dad when it came out, both of us shrewd Godzilla and Sci Fi fans. The end scene really effected both of us. Seeing Godzilla on the big screen was like all holidays rolled into one!
I saw this on TV when I was four or five years old. Not going to lie, I ugly cried at the end. That music and that speech just broke me. Up through high school I would cry at the end of that movie. I am infinitely grateful for Raymond Burr for not allowing this movie to become a parody of itself. But the next day or the day after that I saw Godzilla vs The Cosmic Monster (Mecha Godzilla) and was convinced Godzilla had simply burrowed from the volcano to inexplicably pop out of a warehouse to face off against his double. At that age the difference in film quality didn't register anyway. But I also had that same small Godzilla toy and always laser focused on it whenever I watched Rosanne with my parents. I still have my little plastic Godzilla somewhere in my house too. It was a treasured item right up to adulthood, partly because it was Godzilla and partly just because I had it for so long. And the one comedy line that I still remember from the 1985 version was that younger guy beside the General just recommending they deal with Godzilla with "Maybe a really big horse tranquilizer?"
I've been watching the Godzilla movies and other kaiju movies as I love the but the big G is one of my all time favourites. I only recently found your channel and have watched them all, your info is greatly detailed, and the production value is fantastic. Keep up the great work I can't wait for your Hedra video it's one wacked G movie.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I remember going to the video store and renting all the classic godzilla movies. This was the second godzilla movie that actually scared me. It was those scary ass teeth.
The first time I ever cried during a movie was when Godzilla falls into the volcano. I was 4 and had never seen a Godzilla film. I was so upset that they "killed" Godzilla that my mom sent my step-dad out to get more Godzilla movies because I wouldn't calm down till I knew Godzilla was safe. I have loved Goji ever since and to this day (I'm 34) I still tear up when I hear that music. Long live the King of the Monsters.
I really really really really wish Toho would allow the distribution of the 1985 cut with Raymond Burr. I found a VHS copy at a thrift store but when I tried to transfer it to a DVD it unraveled and broke. I was crushed. But even if it had worked, it would be a pan & scan version with low quality. It would be a fantasy-come-true to see a good Blu-Ray copy.
I still don't really understand why they couldn't or wouldn't call him "Steve Martin." So what if there is an actor with the same name? The character was named Steve Martin a long time ago. It would make sense if they just called him "Mr. Martin" a couple of times in the movie and left it at that. But it always sounds like they purposely went out of their way to not call him Steve.
First Godzilla movie I ever saw was Godzilla 1985, I know it's not a popular Godzilla movie but it's a personal favorite for me :-) this is a great video thank you for uploading 11/19/22
Like others have stated...the ending is so perfect, but I also think this version is one my absolute favorite looks to Godzilla. His face and proportions are perfect. Some of those close ups are still amazing examples of animatronics.
My favorite about Godzilla was the look of his eyes & brow. I also love his roar, so unique, I have it as my text notification on my phone. I first used it as my ex-wife's ring tone. She finally stopped calling me. Long live the King!
I love this movie! I just found your channel and been binge watching. This is my favorite flick and prefer the 85 version. Forever stuck on VHS and Laserdisc.
The original Japanese version actually made it clear it was a different Godzilla the first, when in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (spoilers) the main characters realize the one they went back in time to move was a different Godzilla than the one that appeared in 1954, with this one being the one that appeared in 1984, and in ever subsequent film until the end of the Heisei series.
Damn. Western artists made very little effort to get get Godzilla's look right. "Just draw a green t-rex and call it a day" seemed to be the extent of it.
To this very day, I can't finish this movie. When I saw this in the theater as a kid, it damn near traumatized me. His final roar/scream absolutely crippled me in my seat that my father had to pull me out of the seat. That...scream cuts right through me every time.
One of my favorites as a kid, and my favorite of the films throughout middle and high school (until the original finally took top spot again when I was older). While I have the original Japanese version on blu ray (it was also my first time finally seeing that version), I hope someday we can get a proper release of the American version that I grew up with! I wonder also (as another commenter mentioned) if this is where my love of Dr. Pepper started, haha.
In my opinion, Godzilla Returns is how you do a proper reboot. The first Legendary Godzilla movie should have just focused on the Big Man, and saved the monster battles for the sequel.
9:46 "Godzilla looks more menacing than ever" Yeah, I mean, he kinda looked like someone's drunk uncle with them eyes apart from that. Nothing's more menacing than a drunk uncle! XD
Honestly, the 1985 version of Return Of Godzilla isn’t half bad. It’s one of the few “Americanizations” that in places elevated the film. The original ‘84 film was great, but the ‘85 added Raymond Burr and the roar when Godzilla falls in the volcano which just makes the ending so much more satisfying. With that said, the ‘85 film definitely reeks of a Roger Corman production which deflates drama of the story; but it’s still worth watching if you ask me. But the ‘84 will always be better than the ‘85 in terms of overall quality.
Bill: American audiences didn't seem care about Godzilla with a mediocre box office success. Me: Well, I mean, this was 1985 and the idea of stuff coming from Japan was still very foreign- Bill: It was competing with Back To The Future, Rambo, and The Goonies. Me: *OOF.*
I believe Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs up 👍 and enjoyed it quite a bit. If you see the start of Siskel and Ebert you’ll see the Godzilla 85 poster in the opening scene with Roger Ebert typing away.
I honestly don't mind not getting an explanation of how that could be the same creature that decimated Japan in the 1950s. I kind of like filling in those gaps myself. Shows that even the experts didn't know, but when dealing with a monster like Godzilla, you don't have a lot of time to ponder. I'd like to think that if even a single cell of the creature survived, he could regenerate. Being that there was a nearly 30 year gap between film could have been the time needed for him to heal fully. That just my take. Awesomely cool video and many thanks for sharing this look into Godzilla's triumphant return.
I hate to admit this, but the Godzilla 85' scene with the Shokkirasu is edited a lot better. It's decently scary. The original scene seems to go on too long. The score is still my favorite of all the Godzilla scores, extremely eerie and haunting. Even to this day gives me a sense of dread. And finally, Raymond Burr's monologue at the end will always make me tear up! Still love the original the most of the two though. 😁 Absolutely love your videos! Keep up the excellent work!!
I Love, love, LOVE this Godzilla movie.. This Godzilla was virtually indestructible. 😍 Loved 😍😍😍😍😍 😍🤩🤩 Raymond Burr's appearance in the American version.
I think my biggest irk with this film is how different the robot godzilla looks compared to the normal suit. The suit looks so much better and i wish that version was used in posters.
okay, i saw this as a kid. first one i saw. it got me hooked right away. yes, i knew it was a minature to give scale and colateral damage..... but the minature cities were actually blown up and smash up to make it.... it was flawed but real. thank toho for godzilla!
I was so happy when this came out. Back to the basics. Godzilla suit was so good. Raymond Burr knew this was his legacy. I need the Toho version of this and King Kong v.s Godzilla.
The difference between Return of Godzilla and the Terror of Mechagodzila is honestly breathtaking, I know that the difference in time and budget was mostly the reason why, but they just look like night and day comparisons.
I saw this film in theaters when it came out. I was nineteen years old. I'm ashamed to say, I heckled the film. Now that I'm older, and my love of Godzilla is reinvigorated, I'd love to see the film again!

Great work Bill.
These are so well done
This is my favorite godzilla movie so I was really looking forward to watching this video
Thank you content, loving the history of Godzilla series. Well done!
As a kid, the giant sea lice terrified me. You could do an entire filler movie following a survivor on a oil tanker or cruise ship.
Rest in Peace Satsuma❤
I still don't really understand why they couldn't or wouldn't call him "Steve Martin." So what if there is an actor with the same name? The character was named Steve Martin a long time ago. It would make sense if they just called him "Mr. Martin" a couple of times in the movie and left it at that. But it always sounds like they purposely went out of their way to not call him Steve.
With this i have watched all your history of Godzilla videos. Loved each and every one. Are you planning to do a History of Shin Godzilla video?
First Godzilla movie I ever saw was Godzilla 1985, I know it's not a popular Godzilla movie but it's a personal favorite for me :-) this is a great video thank you for uploading

Like others have stated...the ending is so perfect, but I also think this version is one my absolute favorite looks to Godzilla. His face and proportions are perfect. Some of those close ups are still amazing examples of animatronics.
This is possibly my favorite Godzilla movie
My favorite about Godzilla was the look of his eyes & brow. I also love his roar, so unique, I have it as my text notification on my phone. I first used it as my ex-wife's ring tone. She finally stopped calling me.
Long live the King!
That roar was so menacing to me at the time.
This is takes me right back to my childhood in the 90s.
Damn. Western artists made very little effort to get get Godzilla's look right. "Just draw a green t-rex and call it a day" seemed to be the extent of it.
I loved it as a kid I still do but I don't like it as much now
To this very day, I can't finish this movie. When I saw this in the theater as a kid, it damn near traumatized me. His final roar/scream absolutely crippled me in my seat that my father had to pull me out of the seat. That...scream cuts right through me every time.
I love this movie. I loved getting a serious godzilla. It's a big reason why I can take the character so seriously.
Watching your videos makes me realize how much I wanted them to go along with the original scripts😭
I Love that Burr Respected What He was Working on. If Only they Kept that Energy for the TriStar Movie…
1984/1985 is my favorite of all of the godzilla movies!
This roar scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.
In my opinion, Godzilla Returns is how you do a proper reboot. The first Legendary Godzilla movie should have just focused on the Big Man, and saved the monster battles for the sequel.
Fun fact Akira Toriyama creator of Dragon Ball was on set for this movie as an extra
This movie clocks up there with some of my favorite movies of all time just how dark and menacing godzilla is is fascinating
9:46 "Godzilla looks more menacing than ever" Yeah, I mean, he kinda looked like someone's drunk uncle with them eyes apart from that. Nothing's more menacing than a drunk uncle! XD
A living nuclear weapon destined to walk the Earth forever. Indestructible. A victim of the modern nuclear age. -Dr. Hayashida
Godzilla 1985 is underrated and was the scariest Godzilla!
This was my favorite Godzilla costume as a child
36 years later, I can still hear the soul piercing scream.
Damn Bill is BACK baby
This is my favorite Godzilla movie.
Bill: American audiences didn't seem care about Godzilla with a mediocre box office success.
Me: Well, I mean, this was 1985 and the idea of stuff coming from Japan was still very foreign-
Bill: It was competing with Back To The Future, Rambo, and The Goonies.
Me: *OOF.*
I believe what hurt the film in the US was Leonard Maltin reviewed it, and it was clear he hadn't watched it.
I believe Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs up 👍 and enjoyed it quite a bit. If you see the start of Siskel and Ebert you’ll see the Godzilla 85 poster in the opening scene with Roger Ebert typing away.
What I hate is that it is so hard to find a copy of Godzilla 85 on DVD and at a reasonable price
17:57 imagine that The actor Steve Martin was in a future Godzilla and the character named Mr.Burr
Nah son, the scariest stop motion creature ever is the “who sneezed during my arpeggio?!” kid from Gumby & Pokey. He needs a visit from Godzilla
I like the head-shape on this version.
I actually think the scene where Steve Martin first is shown and the eerie music plays with stick footage from 1954 is pretty dope too
I honestly don't mind not getting an explanation of how that could be the same creature that decimated Japan in the 1950s.
Had this on VHS as a kid, I liked it but I could never get over the derpy eyes. Appreciated the return to G as the villain though
I just imagine that the Godzilla in 1984 was the one from Godzilla Raids Again.
I was impressed with this 80s G film, ToHo, should bring him back in another G film time travel story line, or in the Monsterverse
My first Godzilla movie.
I Love, love, LOVE this Godzilla movie.. This Godzilla was virtually indestructible. 😍 Loved 😍😍😍😍😍 😍🤩🤩 Raymond Burr's appearance in the American version.
I remember going to the theater to see "Godzilla 1985" and I think I might have been the only person in the theater.
And I tried at the end.
My dude, you should have mentioned how amazing the theme for Super X was and how pounchy the rockets and the particle beams it fired sounded
I love this chanel!
This was a good one
I was so happy when this came out. Back to the basics. Godzilla suit was so good. Raymond Burr knew this was his legacy. I need the Toho version of this and King Kong v.s Godzilla.
Love your stuff. When are you doing Godzilla King of the Monsters (2014).
The difference between Return of Godzilla and the Terror of Mechagodzila is honestly breathtaking, I know that the difference in time and budget was mostly the reason why, but they just look like night and day comparisons.
My fave Godzilla film. I've always preferred seeing Godzilla vs us rather than Godzilla vs the monster of the week. I have no stakes in those battles.
I saw this film in theaters when it came out. I was nineteen years old.
I'm ashamed to say, I heckled the film. Now that I'm older, and my love of Godzilla is reinvigorated, I'd love to see the film again!
