I cant remember the book but there was a book published in japan that explained this rodan's origins and gave context to the ending of the first rodan film. The rodan that first leaves is the male but the female fails to leave the volcano in time and is struck down by the magma due to her having a nest inside the volcano. Which is why the male first left and called for its mate to leave before it was too late. Its him that decides he cant live without his partner and actually tried to free the female from the lava but ends up catching itself on fire sealing both their fates. This rodan is the biological offspring of the two that survived when its egg fell down a shaft as the volcano was erupting.

Considering all the wrestling themed events with godzilla and his fights. This movie could be considered the beginning of his “face” turn. Which really gave new life to his career
I have been waiting for a long time to watch this. While it's not my first Godzilla movie ( Godzilla 2014 ) or even Toho Godzilla movie ( Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla ), I still love it.
Great video as always, love how you go deep into the behind the scenes aspect of these movies. While I do empathize with Honda with how he didn't like Toho's direction with Godzilla from this movie forward I do think that in hindsight it was ultimately the best decision for the franchise as it gave the character of Godzilla versatility on how he could be depicted allowing to see movies with him as a villain, a hero, or something in between afterwards. Honestly there really hasn't been any other major movie icon that could do what Godzilla can do since
Maniacal Clefable honestly I don’t find Rodan very disturbing in this film as much as just plain goofy, and I think that makes the Shining gag funnier. Another funny one would be Minilla poking through the door saying “Godzilla says I have to fight my own battles, you know…” 😂
I watched this film at a local movie theater with my mother and a younger brother when I was a second grader of Japanese primary school. I knew Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra already, but I was much more impressed with King Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster.
Great review/history! I discovered Godzilla while living in Okinawa in the mid-60's. I was 5-years-old and my Air Force family was stationed over there. Back in the States, I got the Super 8 film version. Silent and about 12 minutes long, at least it was "big screen." Sort of! :) In the DVD/BluRay age I finally got to see the wide-screen version in the original Japanese! And for some years now it's been my favorite classic Godzilla film. (Excepting the 1954 original, of course.) It's pure, upbeat fun and wonder.
Also, I never thought about Ghidorah potentially being seen as a metaphor for China. It makes sense given the context of the time, but I could see just Ghidorah only written based on Orochi. I could see the three heads representing the nuclear triangle of U.S, USSR, and China who also surround Japan and have aspirations for space. Then again, Honda could be right and that political aspects may not have been involved, but he possibly wanted that Ghidorah to have that meaning. How interesting!
This is a really fun movie, and I recall seeing this under similar circumstances as a kid. There is a solid story, and yes, there are lots of monsters. This imprinted the basic “sound” of a Godzilla film - the overall soundscape with music, dubbed dialogue (viewing the movie on Los Angeles TV) and the sounds of the miniature buildings being trampled. Pretty memorable.
After watching the incredible Godzilla Minus One, I decided to take the plunge and watch every Godzilla movie in order for the first time. I had only seen the original movie and the Monsterverse films before. These videos have become great companion pieces after watching these incredible films for the first time!
Big Action Bill referring to Ghidorah as "Three headed asshole" reminds me of Jim Cornette referring to Kenny Omega as "Spanky McFinger Bang" or Vince Russo as "shit head".
Fun fact: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster is one of two showa Godzilla movies that went unreleased in germany. That´s until it got a DVD release in 2011. They even made a new dub for it, featuring recognizable voice actors. The dub was also made to sound 60ish in quality.

Another excellently researched and edited presentation. I agree with your take on the infant Mothra's (except for the hate part) in that an adult or infant version appeared in subsequent films. I assumed the one that got trashed never matured.
One of my other favorite Godzilla movies. I like how you describe this one compared/cross over with James Bond movies. I enjoy when Mothra tries to convince Godzilla and Rodan to fight against Ghidorah. Three vs. one fight. It's like Superman vs. General Zod and his companions.
