The cigarette stuck on Mothra's face is absolutely hilarious. Totally missed that. Definitely now up there in my top comedic Godzilla moments, right next to the dude who jumped out a window in Destroy All Monsters.
One theory i've heard over the years as to why the 'fruit juices' kept Ebirah away is because the fruit is citrus, and akin to lemons. Lemon juice is commonly served alongshide or on shellfish. So, the citrus smell keeps Ebirah at bay. A similar joke was used in the 80's movie 'Leonard Part 6' with Bill Cosby. Except he used sticks of margarine against Lobsters.
Ngl this is one of my all time favorite Showa films. I loved the fun, lighthearted tone and the amazing practical effects with Ebirah. Also the humans had great personalities and didn't bore out the story.
That's what I'm saying. I never got why this film has such a mediocre to bad reputation when other, more popular Showa films have weaker and more boring human elements - Three Headed Monster and Destroy All Monsters come to mind. Imo of course. This one always slotted in with G vs Mothra. G vs Mecha G, and Son of Godzilla for me. Fun, relatively breezy, colorful G romps with humans that have enough personality to them to make their parts not totally drag.
Honestly that pistol shrimp idea not a bad idea , maybe Toho could redesign Ebirah after it in a future Godzilla movie definitely would boost up Ebirah's popularity and cred.
I was thinking of a mantis shrimp with that powerful punch meant to crack oyster and clam shells, but then I heard about the pistol shrimp and that's sound even cooler
Okay, this movie means a lot to me. I say this because when I watched it I was at like a really bad time. I was sad. And then I went to tubi, and I saw this movie. I was like "It's just a dumb Kaiju movie" I had nothing else to do so I watched it. And man, this movie cheered me up. It was the right amount of silliness and creativity. I just had a big dumb smile watching it. My older brother joined me. We both laughed at how silly this movie was, how the suits looked silly yet good. That was a really good moment. I love this movie man.
This was the VERY FIRST Godzilla movie I ever watched. Years and years ago I found the VHS of this movie, the version titled Godzilla Versus The Sea Monster at Wal-Mart back in the late 90’s I believe. I remember LOVING it to death when I was child, and though I of course view it a bit differently as of today, I can’t help but continue to be fascinated by the things surrounding these movies and how they came to be. Ebirah to this day is one of my favorite characters with how unnaturally menacing he looks in this. Yes in some parts he looks silly and it’s hilarious to know he’s a shrimp, but still! Very good job covering this one, fellow!
@Low Bro Somewhat…? You know I can’t even remember what my first physically attractive crush was. Real or fictional for that matter. I mean as I saw it slightly later on in life I didn’t think the lady was that bad looking now that you mention it. 👌
Love how this channel goes in depth about the movie, in front and behind the camera etc! I never thought I'd things as fascinating as I do about everyone involved with the film!!
"Stop being a fuckin' dinosaur and get a job" LMAOOOO. I am almost 50, and loved these movies as a kid, I'm really enjoying watching your videos on these films. Brings back a lot of memories.
I always assumed the first Godzilla (1954) was impervious to electricity, while the second incarnation of the character was weak to it, yet grew somewhat resistant. In Raids again I rationalise Godzilla's somewhat resistance to adrenaline, he's in the heat of battle with Anguirus. In King Kong vs Godzilla tho, he clearly has a weakness to it, yet progressively (from Mothra vs - vs Megalon) his constant exposure grants him some resistance to it, eventually he's even able to utilise it offensively in vs Mechagodzilla. IDK
To me it was never an issue. Here, it simply wakes him up, but I imagine it still hurt. Similar to how we will use electricity in a defibrillator to restore someone’s normal heart rate, yet if you gave that shock to a person under normal circumstances it would hurt terribly. Godzilla is clearly hurt by electricity, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t inadvertently gain a boost of energy or at the very least wake up from it.
Don't remember where I saw it but someone said it could have something to do with direct current vs alternating current. Lightning is direct current while the electricity we use to power things is alternating current.
Always enjoyed this one for some reason. It’s got a likable cast of characters and the island adventure is fun and a nice change of pace. Yeah I can obviously see it being a Kong film originally but having Godzilla instead gives this it’s weird unique identity.
When I first saw this as a teen I wasn't that impressed by this film, but going back and re-watching it early in this year, I really came around to love it. So much soul in it, from the efforts done in the fights, setting, and music. The human cast and plot is nice and straightforward and sometimes, that's all you need. It's just flat out a good Godzilla movie.
Another great video on the history of Godzilla films. Personally I love the showa era films the most so I’m really enjoying watching these videos. I’ve actually watched many of them multiple times. Ebirah, Horror of the Deep is one of my personal favorites. I enjoy the South Pacific island setting and everything about the film feels fresh. The camera angles, the fast paced story and action, and even the funky music score all make for a super entertaining Godzilla romp. I’m looking forward to seeing the videos for the history of the remaining showa era movies, specially Godzilla vs Gigan and Jun Fukuda’s magnum opus, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. Please continue making these awesome videos!
I was watching these in order while I was sick over the weekend. Happy to see this one come out, and excited to watch it when I get out of work. All the previous videos are incredibly well researched, and put together. Very entertaining.
This was my first exposure to greatness that is Godzilla. I know this wasn't the best of the movies, but this definitely has a special place in my heart
Love this movie, so tonally different and light-hearted yet really entertaining light-hearted human characters and Godzilla's portrayal vs Ebirah and the Red Bamboo was fun to watch. Only rough parts for me was Godzilla's face looked pretty rough and the Giant Condor fight has to be the most egregious shaky cam I've ever seen.
This was one of my favorites when ever it was on TV back in the day. The tossing of the boulder back and forth volley style scene is a highlight of mine.
You are truly the best in the game. Your videos are a comfort zone for me at any given time of the day, I’ve already watched your reviews and the Godzilla movies but recently I had to rewatch them to refresh my memory and since they’re just so good, I’ve been binge watching them late at night before going to sleep and just wanted to say thank you for all your efforts and exposing Godzilla to many other audiences and how you represent them the way he should be represented. Sending love from Mexico!
The first Godzilla movie I annoyed my parents enough into buying for me at Toys R’ Us. An illustrated Heisei era Goji on the VHS box. God bless you Big Action Bill. The Bastard Jokemen love you.
I love Kaiju lore videos always some good nuggets of information in these kinda mini documentaries on them. Ebirah and Guiron are my 2 fav of all time.
22:10 Bill you are not the only one who pretended to be Godzilla when going to the pool or the lake. I always saw myself as Godzilla when I was in the water. I pretended to be Godzilla coming out of the sea ready to fight King Ghidorah, Mothra or some other monster. I’m sure a lot of other G-fans have done this too.
18:24 I love this part because Godzilla was mad that Ebirah caught the Rock instead of keeping up their Volleyball/Tennis game, Godzilla was crying foul and decided to stop playing since Ebirah wasn't playing properly. Showa is great because anyone, reguardless of age or langauge could understand what the monsters were doing and thinking.
Never understood why this one had a meh reputation. It's human story is not nearly as dry as some other Showa era films and once it picks up it's crazy fun and entertaining.
In my chronological watch, just got up to ebirah last night and it is drastically lower in quality in all ares from the series highs, felt way more like a tv movie, not nearly as epic with a much smaller scale than the previous movies, and a bunch of silly moments. I missed the epic scores of the previous movies, the james bond/surf music was so out of place. Ebirah as a villain is great and the few scenes of him attacking ships and boats is amazing but overall it was no where near the quality of the 3 films that preceded it, which had silly moments but i loved (mothra vs godzill, ghidorah the 3 headed monster, and astro monster) which were all much larger scale than Ebirah felt to me
@@ericg1100I feel the complete opposite. After Astro Monster was so over the top with its stakes it was refreshing to have a much more grounded Godzilla film. Plus this has some of the best monster sequences in the series up to this point. This doesn’t have the issue a lot of Honda’s films had of constantly replaying the same shots of model tanks firing over and over to fill out the runtime.
I think this movie is really underrated. I only caught it for the first time recently, after hearing bad things about it for years. I really enjoyed the human story, and while the monster fights aren't super long, they feel really unique because of the setting
I love your entire series!!! The information provided and overall presentation are awesome. Informative and fun! Thank you for the hard work and upload for our enjoyment!!!
great and funny review! also yes i agree, this is an underrated godzilla flick. i love the experimental camerawork, banging soundtrack and the human story, it really feels like a breath of fresh air as opposed to the previous honda films.
Great review and deep dive as always bro! Learning about how one of the lovely Toho ladies threatened to take her life during filming of that Bond film was intense! Thank God everything worked out in the end for her. Some of the themes in this film even remind me of Bond films too. And I agree Ebirah's suit and the water scenes are impressive, I think this is definitely a underrated entry. Lol that Golden Boy anime clip was perfect as well! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for continuing. I watch these videos all the time. My son is about 3 and hes a huge fan of Godzilla. We only watch the Showa stuff because its kid-lite. But I like watching the behind the scenes for myself. I didnt grow up on Showa stuff but it's all fascinating nonetheless. Keep on keeping on. Looking forward to watch the behind the scenes and your opinions for Shin Godzilla
Definitely one of the most underrated Godzilla movies (IMO). Masaru Sato's music, I think blended well with Jun Fukuda's style of direction (the same would be true with Son of Godzilla & Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla). I think that had Fukuda lived well into the 2000s, with all of the G festivals and conventions now in full blossom, his tone towards his kaiju work might have changed, as he would have seen all of the love and appreciation many fans had with his films.
I like Ebirah now knowing how deadly large crabs like the coconut crab are on their own. Imagine them multiplied to daikaiju size and you have what Jules Verne called a formidable monster.
Extra bonus fact: it's natural for a crab to have one large claw and one smaller one. I'm not sure about shrimp but the difference in Ebirah's claws makes sense as an adaptation.
23:03 Godzilla looks like he’s sitting on the Toilet. In the MST3K version they go to town with this. “Will someone get me a magazine I’m gonna be here awhile.” “Honey come in here and talk to me.” When he Red Bamboo Planes attack and Godzilla looks annoyed at being interrupted for the second time Joel exclaims “Can’t a guy get a little bit of time to himself?!” Kevin Murphy said that it was one of their most obvious poop jokes to date.
Always look forward to these uploads Bill :D I know many don't like this film, but I've always liked it. I've always had a soft spot for plots involving being lost on uncharted islands. Add Kaiju into it and you've got my interest >3
@Low Bro Mate, even Bill himself in the video admits he doesn't care for it much besides the monster action. As a piece of cinema, it's got colourful direction & tells a strong message on willpower, showcased through the characters' survival. But it's certainly nothing compared to films like 'Taxi Driver' & The Godfather. Entertainment aside, it's a good enough film, just not truly spectacular.
Your videos like always are soo entertaining and educational Thanks for your hard work and Dedication for this Content You are. Hidden gem 💎 on this platform and deserve more recognition
Regarding 13:15 I agree, the term “suspension of disbelief” is thrown around as an excuse way too often. We suspend disbelief for what defies our world, not what defies the world of the piece of fiction. In other words, if a piece of fiction establishes rules, we will believe them no matter what, but if it breaks its own rules, we lose suspension of disbelief because no effort is then made to even try and be consistent or believable. These movies establish right away that giant monsters exist, so very little suspension of disbelief is needed, but if you establish rules that say people still behave in realistic ways we would expect in real life and then break that rule, then we have a problem. Basically when people complain about something being unbelievable in fiction, we don’t care that it doesn’t make sense in the real world, we are saying it doesn’t make sense in the world the film wants to sell us on. Long rant, but I see so many people using this as an excuse to justify any form of sloppy writing.
Just want to say I love all of your videos. I also was a kid, watching VHS tapes of these movies and I completely relate to the swimming thing. Whenever I jumped into a pool, I always imagined I was Godzilla and my brother was some other kaiju lol.
I can't wait till you cover my favourite Godzilla movie Destry All Monsters. Saw it when I was 7 in 1992 & still enjoy it today. I saw this movie when I was 10 & it was fun... sadly haven't seen it since though.
First time I saw Godzilla vs The Sea Monster I was nine. It was on a local tv station's Saturday monster movie matinee. I was so excited about watching it I kept pestering my older brother for hours about watching it." Is it noon yet? Is it noon yet?"...My favorite part was when Godzilla faught the Red Bamboo's MiG-19 (J6)Farmers. The fight with Ebira was also great to watch. Not one of my favorite Godzilla movies, but its still fun to watch. Great presentation!👍
I actually watched this movie for the first time on Friday, and I think it would’ve worked much better as a Kong movie. Seeing Godzilla do stuff like itch his nose and express interest in a human woman is just strange, even for the Showa incarnation.
This was the first Godzilla film I ever saw as a kid (without counting the 1998 american version). I'm very fond with this one since my father bought it for me during his trip to Japan. Back then because it was in japanese only I couldn't understand the dialogues, but it was very fun seeing Godzilla and Ebirah playing volleyball with those rocks. 😂 Oh and I was infatuated by Dayo..
This was the best MST3K Godzilla episode (even if the Jet Jaguar song translation is an all-timer, the rest of the Megalon episode is pretty meh). Best riff: during the dance competition, one of the bots says "They Shoot Dragons, Don't They?" and I laughed for like 10 minutes. Anyway, great overview, very astute, the James Bond stuff was interesting. Coach Magurk really is the perfect avatar for us old crusty hipsters waiting through the talky bits to watch the rubber monsters go at it.
Loved this movie as a kid. Like you, I used to watch it for the monster fights, but in hindsight it also had one of the best human stories of the Showa era. It reminds me of old-school Doctor Who. Good guys accidentally arrive somewhere and rescue an oppressed population from slavery by using their brains rather than attacking with guns. The main characters are all given something to do, and having one of them get captured was a good way to connect the slave-rebellion sub-plot to the main story. It's a feel good movie, and everything about it is so 60's. The music, the fashion, even the colourfulness of the sets and costumes. Considering the budget and the limitations of technology at the time everything looks great.
I was just so frustrated refreshing RUclips for something to watch while doing homework, this will most certainly do.
The cigarette stuck on Mothra's face is absolutely hilarious. Totally missed that. Definitely now up there in my top comedic Godzilla moments, right next to the dude who jumped out a window in Destroy All Monsters.
I actually loved the story in this one. There were a lot of main characters, and none of them seemed extraneous. They all had something to do.
One theory i've heard over the years as to why the 'fruit juices' kept Ebirah away is because the fruit is citrus, and akin to lemons. Lemon juice is commonly served alongshide or on shellfish. So, the citrus smell keeps Ebirah at bay.

Unpopular opinion: I really like this movie and honestly it would make a great video game.

Pistol shrimps are cool indeed
Yep true.. redesign ebirah with pistol shrimp claw, coconut Crab leg, lobster tail, crab body would be cool... 😅😬😬😬

I know many don't like this film, but I've always liked it.
This was one of my favorites of the Showa era. It was also one of the first Godzilla films I’d seen.
I hope your channel keeps growing and, also a double upload???!!!!
This was my first Godzilla movie, and I still enjoy it!
Your videos like always are soo entertaining and educational Thanks for your hard work and Dedication for this Content You are. Hidden gem 💎 on this platform and deserve more recognition
Sweet great video.
I like the new thumbnail picture for the channel.
14:56 I had that vhs tape and 15:29 one of the most memorable moments in movie history
An octopus was considered for this movie, but unfortunately, Tsuburaya had already eaten it.
Regarding 13:15
I agree, the term “suspension of disbelief” is thrown around as an excuse way too often. Long rant, but I see so many people using this as an excuse to justify any form of sloppy writing.
beautifully stated!
I greatly enjoy your reviews, keep up the good work.

I remembered watching them movies on Saturday matinee too. It was a long time ago for me though. In the mid to late 70s.
really good keep it up
I actually watched this movie for the first time on Friday, and I think it would’ve worked much better as a Kong movie.
Oh and I was infatuated by Dayo..
I always pretended the yellow juice was drawn butter.
This one did have one of my favorite human stories in a Godzilla movie.

I know this is a reupload but... it's still damn awesome either way! Godzilla fighting a giant lobster? Sounds awesome
Brand new video, a re-do, but not a reupload. Hope you enjoy!
@@BigActionBill Oops lol! I mean re-do haha..
All i can remember the first time I saw this movie was Crow saying, ‘I’ll be eating sushi tonight!’ When Godzilla ripped the claw off. ;)
This is one of my favorites. I may be in the minority but I find the human adventure pretty good.
I actually love this movie. I only saw it for the first time last fall, but it really gripped me for the whole duration
AWH YEAH, MY BOY EBIRAH, THE WORLD'S LAMEST KAIJU
we could say in Godzilla the lighting waking him up is like some one giving you a sternum rub to wake you up. it hurts, yea its gonna wake you up
That story about you and the pool cleaner is *adorable*
