Funny thing is that the goofy sounding Japanese guy (I think his name is Nita) sounds normal and even delivers his lines without any comedic tone in the original Japanese version of the movie.
He does! I used to own the dubbed version with his hilarious voice, and then when I saw the subtitled version, it's completely normal. The dubbing made his character a joke (still funny as hell though)
The original Titra dub that was released on VHS also gave him a normal voice. This version also gave all of the characters Japanese accents.
The dub on my vhs tape was normal but I only watch the Japanese version now because the crap dub only exists now
Brandon: Anyone that wears an eyepatch is automatically evil
Dr. Serizawa: Are you sure about that
Also Big Boss
Bunny: are you sure about that
Weeeelllllll... He was a reclusive scientist who was inventing super weapons in his basement. I mean, guy was just casually making skin dissolving bombs
Kings Advisor Buuuut.....He didn’t want anyone else to get hold of it, and he sacrificed himself so no one would figure out how to make it

I love your voice for Mothra, especially the line "I ain't movin' until the puppeteer gets here."

He sounds like Lunchlady Doris.
Does anyone else kinda hear Angel Dust's voice?

*TRIVIA:*
In case anyone's wondering, the reason the Godzilla suit looks so dilapidated, the eyes glazed and the face kinda tore up is due to the fact the Godzilla suit spent a fair amount of time in the water (when fighting Ebirah) and this served to stretch the suit out, hence the bagginess of the suit, towards the end. And during the scene where Godzilla fights the Red Bamboo's air squadron, (not shown in this review) the Godzilla suit took several explosions to the face, causing a fair amount of damage to the suit's face, that the special effects crew didn't have time to repair properly. As a result, the Godzilla suit's eyes have that glazed over look, from being burned by the explosions and his face still shows signs of damage including some melting of the rubber.
By this point in the film, the Godzilla suit is a baggy, saggy, burnt mess. :-/
However, this same suit (originally used in *Monster Zero)* went on to be in a few scenes in *Son of Godzilla,* *Destroy All Monsters* and in *Godzilla vs. Hedorah.* (It's clearly this same suit, during the scene where Hedorah takes a "shit" on Godzilla after he drops Godzilla in the pit.
The face of the Godzilla 1965/1966 costume was modified since Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster.

Interesting info
Thanks, fascinating stuff! Sounds like really bad producing, though; nobody thought to consider the shooting order? Nobody thought explosions and water might damage a foam-rubber suit (or whatever it was. Not something that'll stand up to explosions and water, at any rate)? It's a little shocking, honestly; this was hardly the first kaiju movie at this point. People had solved these problems.
@@michaelccozens The early Godzilla movies were not high-budget productions; they didn’t have the money for extra suits, so they just used each one into the ground, often for several movies in a row, and got a new one when the damage could no longer be covered up.
7:30 -- The lead terrorist in this film is played by Akihiko Hirata
, who was also Dr. Serizawa from the original GODZILLA. To be honest, he plays a lot of doctors, secret agents, and the occasional police detective in these monster movies, but this was the one where he was wearing an eyepatch again, although on the opposite eye. Make of that what you will within the kaiju-verse.
Akihiko Hirata was also meant to play Professor Makoto Hayashida in *"GODZILLA 1984",* but he
sadly passed away due to lung cancer and the role was played
by Yosuke Natsuki (R.I.P.).

A Godzilla sized Shrimp could be intimidating, if it was a monster sized Mantis Shrimp, it would be scary and deadly. The real small ones (6") can shut their claws so fast underwater it briefly creates temperatures similar to the suns surface. lb for lb it packs the hardest punch on the planet and strikes 50x faster than you blink. A Godzilla size one with it's abilities scaled up would be a really tough opponent!
The pistol shimp is the one whose claw shuts that hard. The mantis shrimp is the one that would punch you with the force of both Kratos AND Doomguy.
@@Blanabaproductions How awesome would it be to swap both of those characters in to each others games!
Back in 2013, I brought my DVD of "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" to G-Fest XX and had it autographed by Mr. Tom Kitagawa. For anyone who is unfamiliar with that name, he's the stuntman who played Godzilla in every film in the Millennium series, except for GMK.
I wish I had your luck there

"Crazy Bead Lady" is known in Japan as a miko. Miko are Shinto priestesses who specialize in communicating with the spirits of the dead. Probably the best-known miko in America is Hino Rei, whose other identity is Sailor Mars in the "Sailor Moon" anime. There are a LOT of miko in Japan's pop culture...
I like the juxtaposition of the traditional faith in a serious scene with a comedic western event that is extremely 60s.
As a kid, I found this movie scary. Who isn't afraid of being at the mercy of a monster at sea that eats you up?
But in my defense, I was also scared of those Italian Jaws knock-offs where they replaced the shark with a giant octopus.
ah, so you're afraid of tentacles
so you are scared of henta#
I thought they were in the carribian
"I was also scared of those Italian Jaws knock-offs where they replaced the shark with a giant octopus."

4:37 Nita: "I wonder what the owner looks like,"
Yoshimura: "Well, I'll show you what he looks like!" (Comes out of hiding)
Brandon: "Hey, the owner looks like Astronaut Fuji!"
Yoshimura: "Trespassing? Breaking and entering? Burglary?"
Brandon: "Having an annoying comic relief character? The charges keep piling up!"
This whole part cracked me up
14:26 "He won't! Godzilla doesn't want to do that."
*Godzilla destroyed stuff when he was first mutated in the past...*
Highly underrated entry. A textbook example of how to make a G flick on a very limited budget -- not make it look or feel low budget, and still make it entertaining. Write a decent spy (or other genre) movie -- then incorporate the monsters into it. Contain it to an island setting so no expensive city sets to destroy and no overreliance on monster action. And remember Ebrah was supposed to be Kong's adversary so no beam weapons (also a budget saver) and a better match for the weaker Kong. Ebrah was one of Toho's best/most convincing costumes of the entire series. The traveling matte composite shot of Mothra flying was one of the best FX shots in the series, and the G/jet battle was also an excellent FX sequence. No reliance on stock footage. You can see, however, where G was miscast and was written as a Kong pic but it still managed to work.
7:30 Well, technically Dr. Serizawa from the original movie had an eyepatch.
True
He was especially one of the protagonist of Godzilla 1954
to be fair, he set off so many mad scientist flags(disillusioned scientist secretly builds superweapon in basement) to probably be an outlier.
He technically had an eye patch ???
You mentioned that Ebira's name is literally Ebi+ra, but the bird monster's name is even better! It's called Daikondura!
Dai = big
Kondu = condor = vulture
Ra = suffix for basically every big kaiju
So it's basically called Big Frickin Vulture
You forgot the suffix for ebirah
Grid the xenomorph Brandon pointed it out himself
I can list fifteen different kaiju without "ra" as a suffix. 1. Gyaos, 2. Baragon, 3. King Kong, 4. Gorosaurus, 5. Varan, 6. Megalon, 7. Gigan, 8. Megaguirus, 9. Anguirus, 10. Rodan, 11. Barugon, 12. Guiron, 13. Mechani-Kong, 14. Kumonga, 15. Biollante ;)
BFV 9000
The condor was actually a reused Rodan Puppet
With the repeated references to the red bamboo, I was waiting for Dick Van Dyke to give us a rendition of ‘The Old Bamboo’.
Ebirah only appeared in one other film after this- he appears in Godzilla: Final Wars near the beginning and is taken down by the mutant foot soldiers. Still a pretty cool fight scene.
Oh yeah, he also appears near the end, where Godzilla blasts him and Hedorah out of the water and into each other before killing them both when the Big G arrives in Tokyo.
He also appears in All Monsters Attack/Godzilla's Revenge. It was just stock-footage of this movie.
+Noazilla To let you guys know that Ebirah's role in All Monsters Attack/Godzilla's Revenge was originally meant for the Giant Octopus from King Kong vs. Godzilla, Frankenstein Conquers the World, and War of the Gargantuas
+Scorpionspear77 Well you're bound to lose a bit of your fighting spirit if some jerk pulls your arms.
In fairness we can explain away Ebirah's appearance due to the kid's dreams.
Mothra was so funny!!!! I loved her little dialogue you put in!! Also, she has a bit of a foul mouth.
MissMaddylicous Lasher she has a foul mouth...You dont say

Ah yes. That cookie monster suit. I have nostalgic love for this goofy movie.
It's basically a day in life of Godzilla. He gets woken up and is just looking for a place to sleep

Lol
"You thought it was Namikawa but it was me, DIO!"
Super Xanadu
Daiyo, but still made me smirk.
There is a K-Pop idol whose stage name is Dio.
My mother and sister often talk about him.

Ghidorah: has gravity beams.
Mecha-Godzilla: has missiles, rainbow beam, etc.
Ebirah: is pinchy.
This made me giggle!
This is a dumb little movie, but it will always hold a special place in my heart, for being my FIRST Godzilla movie (and it will forever be linked to Charlie Brown for me as well...because when my grandma taped it for me, it was immediately after 'You're a good man Charlie Brown')
This was one of the first Godzilla films that I ever saw, so it holds a place in my heart for all its shortcomings!
I can remember buying this movie on vhs when I was a kid. It was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw. It was released by 'Goodtimes' and the dubbing was WAY better than this Tri-Star version lol. Great review dude 👍
Godzilla: *breaks one of ebirahs claws off*
Ebirah: It’s ok I got one left maybe I’ll win
Godzilla: *rips the other claw off*
Ebirah: NO! MY ONLY MEANS OF DEFENSE
7:50 Snake Pliskin also rocks an eyepatch, and he was a good guy... sort of. Escape from New York is a classic, at any rate.
Snake is a lot of things, but I'm pretty sure he'd shoot you for calling him a "good guy".

Who draws your intro stills? They are fantastic.
In regards to your 'eyepatch = evil' thing I would say the best example of an exception within this franchise would be Dr. Serizawa.
Really, if you are gonna kidnap people to use as slave labor, why would you take people who are from an island with a giant moth monster as their deity!
Because every other Island next to them has a giant monster too.
Nick Fury is another eye patch exception.

@@TheUaxington I actually really like this movie as well. Did you know that the American TV dub of the film had the same voice cast as SPEED RACER!? Sadly, that English dub is only available on VHS, as the DVD and Blu-Ray releases of the film all use Toho's International English Dub... which is actually pretty decent, but it still lacks some of the gems found in the Titra Studio's dub.
For anyone who's curious, a fan edit exists that actually mixes the American TV dub with the film's widescreen print. It's glorious.

Prop Recycling : The Giant Condor puppet started life as the Rodan puppet from Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster and went through modifications in the show Ultra Q as the bird monsters Litra and Larugeus. It's also Hilarious in Hindsight as when the puppet was Litra, it fought the monster Gomess who was created from the '64 Godzilla suit. The '64 Godzilla was later reused again as Jirass in Ultraman with the head of the Godzilla suit from this film.
What about Dr. Serizawa on the eyepatch thing?
This is one of my favs because it is more than just two monsters fighting. I like the cast, and the story of the four dudes on the boat getting ship wrecked. Also, I am like the only person I know who recognizes that the boat sinking at the beginning of the film is the same boat that the three boys steal later on and that the film makers just reused the monster attacking the boat shots in both.

Only thing i can think of on why godzilla attacked mothra despite being allies (besides the obvious that he's in kong's spot) is godzilla probably mistook her for the previous mothra since he helped her as a larva. That snarfy voice sounds like the weird patron in the diner in that Twilight Zone episode where the bus breaks down and they're trying to figure out who's an alien.
I read a fanfic once where Godzilla battles Zigra, and when they make landfall on the island from this movie before the Red Bamboo show up, they battle another Barugon. Barugon ends up paralyzed by Zigra's Ray and eventually dragged into a freshwater lake and killed by the natives. Godzilla gets hit by the ray too, but fights off the effects long enough to seriously injure Zigra, enough that it has to retreat to its ship, setting up its future encounter with Gamera. Godzilla finds a cave entrance, goes in, and succumbs to Zigra's paralyzing ray, setting up his appearance in this movie. It's actually quite well written.
Where did you find that fanfic, I want to read it

Serizawa made the oxygen destroyer, and the oxygen destroyer created Destroyah, so technically he made Destroyah...
The latest Godzilla movie actually has a similar concept for Godzilla's origin. This time Godzilla is mutated from a bunch of micro organisms after exposure to exposure to chemical substances. It is rather similar in concept to Destroyah's origins.

I do think that this is when the series takes a slight dip in quality, but it's not bad. It really should have been Mothra vs. The Sea Monster, though. It's her people who have been captured. She should be the one doing all the monster battles!
On a side note, the Japanese title is Godzilla, Ebirah, Mothra: Big Duel on the South Seas. That's the moniker that fits the film's content the best.
M.A. Moreno apparently Kong was supposed to be in this film but was replaced with Godzilla, that’s why some of his actions are contrary to previous films: getting awakened by lightening and finding a human female attractive, it’s also why Godzilla fights Mothra in the script even though they should be allies in this point in the series, Kong was supposed to fight Mothra
He didn't so much find her attractive as sit watching her for a while, which could be curiosity as much as anything. It was more of a King Kong thing to do, anyway.
