I wish they had kept the deleted "flower scene", as it really adds to Godzilla's character, even though it was only a few seconds long. You basically see Godzilla kill another kaiju for the first time and, like any first-time killer, he seems genuinely shaken and remorseful over what he's done. By the time of GVKG however, he's much more desensitised.
That doesnt work because by nature his kind hunted wildlife around the marshall island region below the waves prior to radiation being the only thing that sustains him.
I have a feeling Bio was truely female, destroying her because she just mutated to turn evil but was not originally upset the big G.
The music in the scene is also really good… Godzilla Vs. Biollante’s soundtrack is soooo underrated. That “Love Theme” track is god tier.

One of my all-time favourite Godzilla movies for maintaining its dark atmosphere, Godzilla being a threat, the human plot, and linking Biollante still linked to human invention similar to Godzilla, I'll gladly watch this documentary again.

Well, that early statement from the writer was definitely part of the reason the movie bombed.
He definitely turned his mood around, but that kind of statement is insanely harmful to a movies publicity.
All that said, this movies is absolutely amazing, and the love of this movie shows clearly with the sheer amount of innovation here, alongside that "damnit he's a monster" line making sure to remember the roots.
Yes the Japanese take such words seriously and he might have caused many people to not want to see the movie but Iove it

Speaking of a Kaiju's first scene being important one of my favorites is in Gamera Guardian of the Universe when he just leaps out of the water to slap the Gyaos to the ground. It was just shot and framed really well and was a great intro to the new design. (Sorry to bring up Gamera in a Godzilla video but we are all Kaiju fans here, right?)
I agree man, quite frankly if you take both Heisei series as a whole the Gamera movies completely outshines Godzilla in this era. Even more impressive when you consider that the Gamera trilogy was made on a much tighter budget and still have better effects and stories overall.

That’s actually incorrect
Even being a re-upload it's great to re-watch one of Godzilla's best movies.
I was not mentally prepared for the wholesomeness of that clip of Megumi Odaka goofing around with the Godzilla suit.
This is probably my favorite of the Heisei series, the amount of work from the crew and the increased budget really shows, not to mention the bio-tech story being a pretty solid and fresh idea, much more so when you consider that the rest of the 90's movies kind of reverted back to an almost rehash approach (not that I blame them, given this move flopping and Toho being in the business of making money first and foremost) It's a shame it's one of the hardest to track down a physical copy of, I paid more than I care to admit for the DVD (forget the blu ray). I hope someone gives it a proper re-release one of these days, but I won't hold my breath.
well they had to do a lot of work for all the films, especially the later ones with the monsters fights having to be different. Also I don't think that the bio tech story really was that solid, and the scientist's daughter being a part of biollante wasn't really that obvious.
But godzilla vs king ghidorah is a completely different idea that no other godzilla film has ever done, godzilla vs mothra is basically the showa mothra vs godzilla, except with a lot more fighting and battra. Godzilla vs mechagodzilla 2, is basically son of godzilla and godzilla vs mechagodzilla combined, with rodan being added into the whole story. Godzilla vs spacegodzilla is a completely different story than any other godzilla film. Biollante, or a godzilla cell went into a black hole and then got exposed to the energy of supernovas, and then came back to earth to claim it for himself and to destroy godzilla without being mind controlled. And godzilla vs destroyah's story has never been done before or after, especially since godzilla wasn't the direct cause of destroyah's defeat, his son died, and he too died. But then his son came back because of the energy.
So I don't really know what you mean, if anything godzilla vs mothra is the only 90s film to have a very similar story to the original, and I think that the other 90s films have a more in depth story than in vs biollante, but those are just my thoughts on it. Also I believe you can get godzilla vs biollante pretty cheap on ebay, thats where I got mine from.
@@GSTE_ I don't understand why you felt the need to type out a whole book chapter in response. Did my opinion upset you? I know what the plots for the Heisei era movies are, I've seen them innumerable times. But you basically admit that most of the movies are just old ideas thrown together in slightly different ways with more advanced effects, I think that counts as a rehash? I love the Heisei movies, but the drop in budget and effort after Biollante is quite apparent. Again, sorry if you felt this was an attack on the other films, but this is purely my opinion. As for the DVD being "pretty cheap" I don't really think a budget DVD being sold for over $50 dollars is "cheap" by any measure unless you have no grasp of the value of money. Also, just a heads up, Erika being part of Biollante is explicitly stated several times throughout the movie, maybe you should watch it again and actually pay attention outside of the monster scenes.

I didn't admit anything of the sort, as in old ideas, you mean using mechagodzilla, king ghidorah, and mothra.
If you do then those are old ideas, but the way they are used are anything but that, except for mothra, her story is basically the same from godzilla vs mothra, except with some variations, thats the only movie where it lines up with what you said the other movies have completely different ideas.
I saw a couple of people have it for under 40 dollars, I consider that cheap for a rare film, and I got mine a while back and it was like between 20 and 30 if I remember right.
Also I know that erika was stated to be part of biollante, but it never really felt like that with biollante's actions or anything like that.
Also I highly disagree with your opinion of the effects being worse in the later films.
I think that in many ways they got far better, except for some green screen effects in godzilla vs king ghidorah, but the laser animations of the mazers are far better in the movies after vs biollante, godzilla's atomic breath and nuclear pulse got far better in the later films. Especially the nuclear pulse, the nuclear pulse in 1989 was just the same 1 frame of animation fading in and out, the ones after that were individual frames of animation that definitely looked a lot more powerful.
And the suits I would say got a lot better too.
So I don't really know what you and some other people mean by the quality got worse by the end of the series, I would say it got far better, godzilla vs spacegodzilla and godzilla vs destoroyah have some of the best godzilla animations up to that point and maybe even better than some later films, they may have their downsides in some parts, but they were still overall really good.
I don't think that godzilla vs biollante was better in quality, it was very good for it's time, but the later ones I think are far better in animation and overall designs.
@@GSTE_ There's a reason why most fans point out the effects and stories getting worse with each movie, it's because they do. The mattes in Biollante look noticeably better than the mattes in Destoroyah for example, the Hong Kong attack is pretty laughable even by the standards of the showa era movies, and many of them from Mechagodzilla and Spacegodzilla are pretty rough as well, let's not forget the Moguera/Spacegodzilla asteroid belt fight, which is honestly pitiful. The tail visibly tears off in one scene in Spacegodzilla, Ghidorah's flying scenes look worse than they did in the showa movies, as do Mothra and Battra. Junior is VERY clearly a still model on wheels when he and Godzilla meet up in Destoroyah. These can be traced back to smaller budgets sure, but the 90's Gamera movies had EVEN smaller budgets and still look noticeably better than the Godzilla movies of the same time, so you can't just blame lack of funds. The stories being better or worse are entirely subjective sure, but at least Biollante attempted to do something new for the franchise, introduced an entirely new kaiju that wasn't just a Godzilla variation (Destoroyah aside). The reason Erika doesn't influence Biollante's actions is because Godzilla's DNA takes control, this is also stated in the movie. Now, putting the actual quality of the movies aside, Godzilla vs Biollante has no reason to be a rare film, You will not find it for $40 these days and even then that's absurd for a DVD that was $5 when it came out.
@@seanmckelvey6618 I think that destroyah is really good, especially since they had his suit do a lot, unlike biollante, which didn't really do much at all, it was mostly her vines that did the work not the actual suit.

And how is the moguera and spacegodzilla fight in space pitiful, I thought it was pretty good, of course they used the miniatures and not the full suits, so you can't expect them to look exactly like the full suits in design.
Ghidorah's flying scenes are basically the same thing as the showa era, except slower, but mothras flying is pretty good, with her wings flapping similar to the original mothra, sometimes it doesn't look as good, but other times it looks pretty good.
Godzilla jr was on a track, but it was for literally one or two not that long scenes, so I don't think it's a thing to discredit the whole movie because of that, it was meant to show the size difference of godzilla and godzilla jr, which it did, I think maybe they shouldn't have put it on a track, but it still wasn't that bad.
I will say that the 1996 and 1999 gamera films were better in animation and effects, but not the 1995 gamera guardian of the universe movie.
That one wasn't better than any of them, and the gamera films didn't really show much of the fighting like the godzilla films did, usually it was the monsters pushing each other, and then gamera instantly finishing them at the end. And mixed with super close angles or low angles that also make the fight really hard to see.
So I disagree with some of the things you've said, I think that the hong kong scene is really good in effects, the green screen effects were done very well, sure they had people who were not that noticable on the street to the bottom right in one scene, but if that ruins the whole scene for you, then I don't know what to tell you. And especially the effect when godzilla shoots his atomic breath at the city and then it explodes, that was better than most of the 1990s gamera animation, I have no idea how they did that.
So I think that they could have done some things better with the Heisei godzilla series, but I think that they did a lot of things right.
The thing is that if they tried to repeat what biollante was, with them creating a new monster that godzilla instantly destroys without much of a fight, sure you could have some of the best animation possible.
But you wouldn't be getting much of a fight, the later godzilla films had more fighting, and in each movie it is different.
But thats basically my opinion, I guess we could end it here, I just wanted to share my opinion, and we can end it here even if we disagree if thats alright with you.
Ive always had a soft spot for this film! I begged my mother for the vhs of it as a child and had to do 2 weeks of chores to get it...and still didn't have enough! Some awesome person behind the register helped me out and spotted me a few bucks, i was stoked! The cover alone intrigued me and I was blown away by the godzilla suit and monster designs. Up to this point i had only seen the showa era godzilla films on tv and vhs, and the opening alone blew my mind haha. To this day its in my top 10 and still my favorites godzilla poster art of all time. Thanks so much for reviewing this film.

Watching The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante back to back is amazing. I hate how screwed up getting a Biollante DVD is.
yeah, it's crazy how much they're going for now. I got the DVD for a decent price on ebay, but that's a decent price in comparison to the normal price, so it was still WAY more than anyone should pay for a DVD.
What's doubly annoying was that when it was first released, it bypassed a lot of stores' DVD/Blu-Ray sections, and went straight to the Bargain Bin, simply because of how cheap they were ($5 for DVD, $9 for Blu-Ray). Now they're literally like 20-30 times that.
@@jonathankozenko I literally never even knew it came out until after it was OOP and selling for stupid money. I really hope now that Toho has a western division they can start releasing these movies properly & at a reasonable price. Or at least put them up on a streaming service or something.
@@seanmckelvey6618 Or better yet, rerelease the Heisei Godzilla films in a coherent series or package. But that is unlikely considering the different distributors.

I concur: this is a great Godzilla movie.
My brother and I are huge Godzilla fans but never saw this one as kids; so a year ago we finally sat down to see what we missed. The movie exceeded our expectations and was a ton of fun. The human characters (usually annoying in other movies) were hilarious here 😂

Sure, most if not all fans watch Godzilla movies for the monsters.
However, that doesn't mean the human characters can't be well written. In my opinion, that is something even the modern Godzilla films (in USA and Japan) still struggle with.

An underrated classic.
One thing I always find people miss is that this movie involved a human being turned into a kaiju, which is an interesting plot all on its own.
This is one of my favorite Godzilla movies, and it’s entirely because of the wacky psychic staring contest between the girl and Godzilla on the oil platform which drags on for way too long and basically accomplishes nothing at all but making Godzilla flash red for a second, then the girl passes out and our favorite kaiju basically goes “Well… that was weird.” and proceeds on his way as if nothing happened, because nothing did.
She convinces Godzilla telepathically to move in another direction than where he was heading.
For whatever reason, this one is almost as hard to find as Godzilla 1985!
It's because of the home video rights. Hopefully it all goes to Criterion so we can get a Heisei set. Return of Godzilla and vs. Biollante are in dire need of new transfers.
iirc the Kraken video release of Return of Godzilla is still easy to find for cheap, but the dub included isn't the 1985 version. I don't think Godzilla 1985 itself will ever get released again due to rights issues.
I’ve watched these history of G videos at least 3x each now, they’re that good.
I have only seen Godzilla minus one and the American Godzilla movies but I love film history. You are perfect in the way you present your videos. One thing I must say is than Ifocube’s score is always perfection.
These vids are becoming a necessary companion to each Godzilla film, as I make my way through the series
Its been 6 months since i wrote that comment and its sill as true as ever. In fact ill go a step further and say that Big Action Bill's videos are sometimes better than the movie itself. Some of the lesser efforts can be slow and painful but learning how they were made is always interesting.
The fact that Godzilla's dorsal plates were lit up in real time explains why the SH Monsterarts figure of the BioGoji design had that feature included. I hadn't thought of that until this video.
well his dorsal plates light up in real time for most of the heisei godzilla films, it's more obvious in some scenes in godzilla vs mothra and godzilla vs spacegodzilla. His mouth also lights up when he shoots his atomic breath, which is how they know when exactly to set off the fire crackers and to animate the atomic breath.
It's amazing how many "modern" Godzilla movies there've been. In the '70s, I grew up watching Godzilla reruns nearly every weekend. I loved it. Loved the other Japanese monster movies and sci fi too. And any ripoffs or "inspired by" ones they showed. But it was one of those cornerstones of childhood you just take for granted. Godzilla, Three Stooges?, Gilligan's Island, Brady Bunch, I Love Lucy?, Leave it to Beaver, Star Trek, so many more were rerun every weekend, and when they ran through their catalogs, they'd run them all again. Loved them each, then almost memorized them, then, just grew use to them. Not bored, in the way of sick of them (It felt comforting to turn the dial and know they were still out there as I passed them or played them in the background. By the time Godzilla 85 came, it was a "oh that's cool! Finally he's in the theaters", then been there done that and went to Ghostbusters. Until now I thought the next movie after this one was the Ferris Bueler one then the one teased at end of Skull Island. Nice to know he wasnt as forgotten as I thought.
1989 awesome year for the Heisei era. I was born in 89 before I got into Godzilla when I was two.
I literally just watched this movie for the first time about three days ago and I really enjoyed it. I do like Return of Godzilla better, but this one is one of my favorites.
The scene with the kids showing the Godzilla drawings is one of my favorite scene, plus the final battle is so great, this is one of my favorite Godzilla movies

17:00 I always thought the scene with the kids holding up the drawings of Godzilla was a bit reminiscent of a scene in Close Encounters - when all of the people gathered on the hillside in India were asked where the sound they heard came from and they all pointed straight up.
I like to think they held s contest where kids had to draw the best Godzilla picture with crayons and those are all the winners with their drawings! They seem so proud

18:16 This reminded me of that short clip of stop motion in King Kong Vs.Godzilla.
But, it could be a coincidental reference to how the original 1954 film was originally going to use stop motion effects. The scene’s stop motion itself looks better than the one in King Kong Vs. Godzilla.

well technically biollante could be spacegodzilla, or just a cell of godzilla.
But it makes more sense since spacegodzilla has a mind and is able to think like godzilla, that spacegodzilla is from biollante's spores. Meaning that spacegodzilla is biollante's third form, hypothetically. I just wish they said exactly which one it was.

Return is my favorite G film and certainly my favorite Heisei film, but man is this a close second. IMO, the Heisei series dropped in quality a bit with each film going forward with a slight uptick during Destoroyah. I've always enjoyed the score for this film. I didn't know that the composer hadn't seen the film before it was written which makes it even better in my mind.
This was a great leap forward with the FX. Everything looked great. I want to own the Osaka set!

One of my favorite films in the franchise and to date my favorite Godzilla suit. Loved the 1984 suit but the head for this one takes it. Also love the more intimidating and muscular design they used fron 84 onward.

I love this one because this the movie Godzilla was actually physically hurt.
Finally got to watch this one. The special effects were great, my complaints were spending so much time on the Bio-Major and Saradia plotline with no apparent payoff, and Biollante not really being all that fleshed out. She just does the sparkly thing and the space rose thing with no explanation, then comes back to fight Godzilla again for...some reason?
Trimming bits and a little bit of reorganizing would have made a huge difference.

This film was my first, and intro to the franchise so seeing your wonderful review. Just made my day, I look forward to the next one.
I thought this was a great movie. The whole idea of Godzilla's cells having such potential for genetic research was a cool idea. And the idea of genetic engineering seemed to be viewed much like nuclear energy in its early days. The one character saying how genetically engineered wheat could turn deserts into vast farms sounds like the boundless optimism of the dawn of the nuclear age.
Also this movie had the best rating ever. At the start of the DVD you see it is rated PG for "Traditional Godzilla violence."
I wanted to check this one out because you noted in another video this was one of your top liked films of the era ... This video is a lesson on how to do a film retrospect... So much good info and clips... Really interesting...

At one point he had 90% of all godzilla films made. But slowly he is re doing old ones. I used to watch all of them to get me too go to sleep or long road trips and then one day 'pooof' they all disappeared and they are starting to come back.

Biolante was a great movie. a great and honestly scary monster. till then no other kaiju, even ghidorah had really done serious damage to the g man. biolante straight up pierced his flesh.
The animated ending idea reminds me of Gerald Scarfe’s work on Pink Floyd’s The Wall album and film! Great stuff!
This is definitely one of my favorite Godzilla movies of all time. From the espionage-spy subplot, the theme of bioengineering and international terrorism, and of course the designs and special fx of both Godzilla and Biollante make this movie one of the best of the best in my opinion! Sure the plot is over-crowded, but what information we do get is enough to paint a very compelling picture.

Very happy i found it on DVD, its so hard to find this one of Heisei era on Blu Ray unless you want to pay 250$ on Ebay seems due to Miramax owning the rights... But I watch this one over and over again now 32 feels as if I am 8 again. I loved everything from start to finish especially the little nods to 007 from Omori. The army scenes vs Goji are now my fave. I always enjoy watching this retrospective.

yeah, especially the 1995 suit, having all that heat from the lights and smoke plus inside the actual suit and an already 200 pound or more suit is just crazy. I definitely think that was the hardest suit to be in ever, with godzilla 1954 being the only one harder to be in.
But when you see the behind the scenes the actor moves so fast in the godzilla suit, I don't even know how thats possible, definitely respects to him for being able to deal with that much pressure for 6 years. Especially with all of those explosions and sparks, they probably had more sparks and explosions than any other godzilla series.
So yeah this actor especially deserves to be congratulated for his hard work and suffering for the art.

I was watching Tokyo SOS and i remembered your channel, then i saw that you reuploaded this video and oh boy, your goji vids are 10/10. (Your recent anime ones too, thank you so much for your vids)
Maybe i already wrote this but this is the movie that i grew up watching, this and the Mothra (92) were constantly in the tv, but this one always keep my eye, and well, Biollante was terrifying.
I remember that when the movie was on the tv my family gathered to see it.
This was the era that i like the most, 2000¿s (millenium) era is fine tho.
The kids all lifting up their pictures of Godzilla while the theme plays has been burned into my mind since I was a child.
I remember seeing the display case for this movie in blockbuster but the video itself was never available for rent. That was always very frustrating to me as a Godzilla fan in the pre-internet era. I didn’t get to see it or any of the heisei series until AMC aired them in the late 90s.
You mentioned that this was released on your birth year, this movie was released on my birthday; however I was born in 1991. The silver lining is that Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah was released two days before I was born, and it became my favorite movie in the Heisei era.
Great Sequel added a new inventive monster, but Godzilla was still the main focus (which isn't always the case), and like the original it keep the themes of dangerous scientific experimentation present. It's in my top five Godzilla movies, it's underrated for sure.

This movie reminds me of an interesting element about Kaiju films that we don't actually think about, and supposedly its existence was because of a fundamental widespread mentality at the time, and was likely not intended to be a theme of the genre: The ineffectiveness of the Military against a monster. Supposedly, in 1954, the Military was unable to stop Godzilla because the Japanese people were very anti-Military at the time, as it was their own Military's actions that would ultimately lead to two atomic bombs being dropped on their own country -- Yes, the Japanese people also VERY much blamed the American Military for this, as it was them to unleash such an intense and unnecessary power, but at the same time they acknowledged that America didn't actually start the Pacific conflict, so the opinion on the Japanese Military was very low. Fast-forward to the Heisei era, where the Military was, essentially, just a defensive force that was powerful enough to dissuade invasions from enemy countries like China and the Soviet Union, and the Military is vastly more competent. It's interesting to see this strange emerging dichotomy as a result, as the tropes of the genre required that Military firepower be insufficient against a Kaiju, while at the same time the Military were now the heroes of the movie, so they had to balance this out by having the Military use creativity, everything from new technology to strategically maximizing their firepower. Personally I kinda love this as I always find myself getting legitimately pumped when the Military is about to engage Godzilla right before the final battle.

I remember seeing "Ultra Man" stuff in the early 1990's. I was blown away by the monster Hunter design!!
I suppose the similarity between this and "Little Shop of Horrors" could have been even greater. The stage musical, building on the original Corman film, has a downbeat ending in which the plant kills Seymour and Audrey and plants like Audrey II threaten to take over the world. Frank Oz's film originally expanded that into Audrey II growing to giant size and mounting a full-scale kaiju attack on New York. The sequence was entirely finished and is truly awesome--it's available as a deleted scene on the current DVD. But test audiences hated it. As Frank Oz said later, a movie doesn't quite have the unrealism of a stage play in which characters can get killed and then the actor comes out to take a bow. It absolutely appalled the test audience that the protagonists they loved were dead for the final scenes of the film; they wanted the good guys to win. So Oz had to change it. That was probably for the best for the film's success. But the alternate ending would have actually given us a giant monster sequence.

In the WII game there were two monsters that had an unfair advantage over all the other monsters in the game those two monsters were biolante and destroya and both of them had the ability to make all the other monsters mush or I should say that they had such damage resistance and regeneration that they were very hard to beat. Almost all of the monsters had ok range with a beem attack but only those two had attacks that would out reach every other monster unless they were using their beams. There were only three monsters that had the ability to camp somewhere and pelt the other monsters from afar with normal abilities and beams those three are space godzilla, biolante, and destroya. All three of them have devastating beams and beam like abilities that out damage all other monsters and are hard to stop with your own beams but only the first two have abilities that not only are they very hard to stop they have very high regeneration and damage resistance that is hard to get through. They are also the only ones that have abilities that are so hard to block and those same abilities don't benefit the opponents in the same situation. Space godzilla produces crystals that can be used in a single attack when they rise and again when they fire pulses but if anyone breaks them they will get a power boost that is bigger than the normal power crystals in the game. Those three are so powerful that if you were to the three team member game anyone who has them as their team is almost a garrentee to win. As a matter of fact you must have atleast one of certain monsters to have a chance to win. That said if they were to produce a game that was like that for the switch I think people would love it. Especially if they were to include as many of the monsters from the multiple cartoon series and possibly the manga/ comics. The biggest thing I can see as reasons not to Include the manga/ comics is that their monsters had a tendency to not well define the abilities of their monsters and/ or the design of them. Even the cartoon for the iguana zilla was very consistent and the monsters were very interesting in both functionality and art designs. The monsters even have the same defining factors in their creation. I know that I would probably be willing to spend an insane amount of time and money on a game like that. It wouldn't need to have controls that functioned anything close to the wii because it was very dependent upon motion control but with the correct control system you might even be able to run the game on your phone.

I love how dark this movie was and was a monster was hard for Godzilla to defeat but ... I like the ideal of a "female" face attached to a monster... i think something like that would have been interesting even today.
I didn’t like this movie initially when I saw it as a kid. I thought it was too weird even for Godzilla, but with age and giving it a chance again, I actually really liked it.

This is my favorite Godzilla movie, lifelong fan. Have the poster, fridge magnet and the Tamashi Nations figure. Only Godzilla though, the Biollante figure is almost four hundred dollars now last I checked.
