I think it’s the most impressive of the Heisei series. They actually tried to make it good. Original story/monster, serious adult tone, and a big improvement in almost every technical aspect to Godzilla 1984. It’s definitely a top 5 for me.
I have it as my 3rd favorite my first and second being Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs king Ghidorah
In my list of movies: number 4.
More towards the top maybe 6th place for me.

The Blueray I have for "Godzilla vs Biollante" contains one of my favorite MPAA rating tags ever. Rated PG for "Traditional Godzilla Violence". And it doesn't disappoint on that.

@@Stormkrow280 Thanks for the confirmation. Also, when I first watched Godzilla vs Biollante, I always thought Biollante was male, since I don't recall any of the human characters referring to Biollante as a "She" like with Mothra.
To be fair, the scientist expected Biollante to be more like his daughter, but tragically it was too early for the Moe Monster Girl effect to take hold.
This is the early 90s cute monster girls were not yet popular.
If they added Biollante to the Monsterverse I hope they make her a bit closer to her original concept designs. The rose form was supposed to feature Erika's face. She even had mouth movement. Not sure how that would translate to her evolved form though.

Toho studio actually attempted to include stop-motion for the fight between Godzilla and Biollante, and while impressive, it didn't mix well with the suit-animation and was dropped. The also did a scene where Biollante transcends in to cell animation when consuming a weakened Godzilla.
This film had ALOT of experimentation.

I remember being absolutely speechless when I saw the tentacle go right through Godzilla’s paw when I was a kid. It was a major shift from the goofiness of King Kong vs Godzilla which I had watched religiously prior to that. I was a lifelong fan soon after. Cheers!
Toho can be quite annoying to deal with. I'm glad you still do these videos even with them being so harsh on content.
Also, don't you just love how the Blu-Ray for this movie is so expensive and yet the audio quality sounds like it is still from the VHS? This is one of the worst Blu-Ray's I have. Even the video and audio quality on some of my Showa era movies is SO much better.

Especially when you compare it with the Japanese audio on the same disc, the difference is unbelievable.
This was one of my favourite Godzilla movies - I seen others before and after it, but this actually struck me as realistic in that the humans actually have some decent plans to stop Godzilla - the drill-rockets with the bacteria were a pretty smart move. Plus the intrigue with the spy was also nice, and Biolante was pretty terrifying for a giant plant.
Miki is a regular character in the "Heisei" era and I'm happy about this. Not only is she cute as heck but she ties the series together through Destroyah. Or Space Godzilla, I keep forgetting which one was the last one.

This was the first Godzilla movie I ever owned, and I probably bought it for a dollar at the local thrift store while I waited for my mom to finish looking at boring necklaces or something. Thank you so much for putting this one up, it was a wonder seeing this movie again. :)
The scene with the psychic kids holding up their Godzilla drawings is so damn good

As far as designs, Biollante is one of my all time favorites. I just wished that we’d seen Godzilla and Biollante throw down more. If you haven’t already, check out the concept art to this movie.
Also, look at the early concept art and story of Godzilla1985 (or the Return Of Godzilla, or 1984, or whatever). Crazy stuff there and something I would like to see happen.

I remember being a kid Godzilla 1984 was my favorite movie. I had no idea they made a sequel. I was 8 years old browsing Blockbuster Video when I saw it on the new releases shelf and almost had a heart attack.

The guy who wrote this story also wrote a similar script that would be used for an episode of Return of Ultraman
It's crazy to think the entire Heisei series depended on some random agent to continue plot-wise
That and a really dumb biotech company. Give us the bacteria or we will release the nigh indestructible monster with a penchant for destruction
A damn shame that, after this movie underperformed, the darker, more serious tone and original kaiju and vehicles of this and the previous movie are largely abandoned in favor of recycling old kaiju and going back to goofy Showa-esque plots that doesn't really let up until the end with vs. Destoroyah, or for that matter how the SAME DAMN THING happened with the Monsterverse. Not counting the animes (both of which I do very much like), it would be great to see an ongoing Godzilla series that actually manages to keep a consistent and serious tone throughout.

Sweet another Godzilla movie and this is my 1st ever Godzilla movie growing up. Also this is where I pay attaction to one human known as "Miki Saegusa", Where she became a big part in the "Heisei period".
I hope Millie Bobbi Brown’s character in Godzilla King of the Monsters will be like Miki.

Erm... Remember the man in the bear costume in "The Shining" (1980) who was based on the 1977 novel character Roger? A guy who dressed in a dog costume and did the nasty with one of the hotel's owners from the 40's & 50's. ....ppl have been staining costumes for ages
This is #7 in my Top 10 Godzilla films. I remember when this was available on VHS back in the 1990's. Until 1998, only GODZILLA 1985 and this were released on VHS - it was actually when GODZILLA '98 was coming out that they released the last five Heisei Era Godzilla films to promote it (what a shame, considering they were vastly superior!). But more importantly, this installment also has a special place in my heart as I wrote a paper on genetic engineering once and even took part in the March Against Monsanto rallies in Asheville, NC. Biollante is one of the best monsters ever to fight Godzilla!

I'm watching this from Odaka, Fukushima, just a few miles down wind of the nuke plant, the Godzilla theme of radiation gone bad is very relevant. I have seen the effects of radiation contamination here.

Kazuki Omori tried to kill her off too in "Godzilla vs. Destroyer", but Tomoyuki Tanaka stepped in and put a stop to it (he also saved Junior from Omori's callousness).

Everything of this movie is perfect. It’s on my top 5 favorite Godzilla movies. I love the instrumental scores. Blend of dark and humor. It’s perfect to me.
So, follow my logic for a second.
Mothra is basically the lone "Good" Kaiju in most of the Godzilla movies right?
They should start capitalizing on Biollante as an additional "Good" Kaiju. Think about it, you have a Kaiju that has a human soul in it, that is a perfect justification for making a Kaiju that is legitimately trying to protect humanity from opponents like Godzilla we can't handle!
Both Mothra and Biolante kill people who stand on their way tho.

I'd say that the biggest contribution this movie gave (in addition to an extremely interesting kaiju in Biollante) was Miki, my personal favorite human character from the entire franchise.

This is my fave godzilla movie oddly enough.
Great review as always. I remember loving G 85 as a kid, and imagining what would happen if he got out of the volcano. I spent years imagining , and then one day a family friend brought home a bootleg VHS of this movie and my questions were answered and imagination fed. Decent effects, a unique monster, and maybe the definitive design of Godzilla. One of my favorites

Great analysis Brandon, and so funny! I've already watched it so many times I've lost count. I'm already looking forward to what 2019 will bring, and if you need some suggestions for what to review next, I recommend either Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), Godzilla vs. Mothra: The Battle for Earth (1992), or Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 (1993)

The movie was released on December 16, 1989, the scenario was completed on July 24, filming began on August 28, and the production was completed on November 2. The production cost was 700-800 million yen ($5.5 million at current rates). It was a miracle that such a masterpiece could be created under such adverse conditions.
