Alright, to clear up the confusion for everyone: Barugon is weakened by FRESH water, ocean water doesn't affect him. They clarify this in the Japanese version but not the English dubs. So that's why he can swim to shore but be subdued by rain. Also Gamera drowns him in a lake at the end, not the ocean. So maybe that is a bit less frustrating now lol
XuntosIzor I agree
XuntosIzor Actually that's not true. All water harms Barugon. If you look when Barugon is underwater, but coming ashore in Kobe, the water is stained with his purple blood.
KeepingAngelaBaker That may be the case, you might have a point there, but it's really hard to pick out colors with this film lol. Everything is just darkish
+KeepingAngelaBaker Oh! So that's why he's purple on top! Stained with his own blood, but still continuing on with his rampage. That's so badass!
+XuntosIzor Is that a fact? I guess the localization team felt it wasn't that important a detail. But little did they realize it plugs up a huge plot hole.
I will say the Sandy Frank dub had one of the most awkward lines ever said in a movie.
"We are helpless before the power of his tongue." O_o

Man if I had a dollar for every time I made a girl say that...I'd be broke as shit.
Fun fact:this is the only movie that had a different director than all the other gamera movies
Must be why it’s so good
That’s why there’s no Kenny
Explains why it’s Soo much better
This sequel is better than the rest of the gamera sequels
I bet the director hated Kenny too
Is it dumb I only just realized Barugon is a chameleon, and the rainbow is a joke based on color change
Son of a bitch i just got it by reading your comment
You have achieved post-nut clarity
I didn't realize it until you said it!
Still have no idea why barugon has a weakness to water
@@deetee2011 freshwater, barugon can't survive freshwater for some reason. theres a manga series about gamera around the heisei period that explores his enemies and fights them, they add new enemies and bring back most showa ones.
I was a 10 years old Japanese kid when I watched "Gamera vs. Barugon" at a movie theater in my hometown with my grandmother and younger brother. This movie was released with "Daimajin". It was an incredible combination.
Your English is way better than my Japanese. Just saying.
Love Daimajin
@@jeremyfrost2636are you japanese?
10:46 TASTE THE RAINBOW MOTHERF****ER!!!
Sorry about that, but now I can't help but think that Barugon is a member of the Care Bear Cousins with a deadly Care Bear stare.
You should've said TASTE MY DEATH RAINBOW MOTHERF####ERS!!!
DTheRedCloak yea YEAH....
BARUGON:I AM THE MOST OP,I HAVE DEATH RAINBOW!!!
ME:T-T
9:07 But to be fair, BarAgon is SO ADORABLE!!!
"RAWR!" -Rie "Baragon" Ota
Yea he cute
*BarUgon.
Omg that clip is so adorable...she's just giving it her all
The fact that there's no Kenny and the human plot actually going somewhere, I consider this the best Gamera movie.
Again, it's sad that the Sandy Frank version is better
best showa gamera, right?
I mean, it’s not obviously anything like Gamera trilogy, but pretty good
And Gamera the Brave was great.
@@toatakanuva4846 dude the trilogy may be some of the best kaiju movies ever made in my opinion
Devin Keeling That’s definitely not just your opinion on that bud
This is probably the best of the Gamera Showa Series.
Syphon Filter only because there are no Kennys
@@Stormkrow280 And an actual plot
And a Irish creature
It's the most serious one even more than the first one
What about Gamera Vs Gyaos?
Brandon you should do a review on the film "Yongary Monster from the Deep." It's right up your alley.
No It Has Kennys
Goji agreed, but that movie could cause Brandon a major Kenny Meltdown.
That’s a risk, I’m willing to make.
EXACTLY
The movie was riffed on MST3K: The Return. I think Yongary would actually be a pretty good choice. Sure, there's an annoying Kenny in the movie with a REALLY LITERAL name in the English Dub (Icho = Itch), but at least he actually did something useful.
10:50 ohhh, so that's where Shin Godzilla gets his back lasers from
Are you saying that Gamera dragged Barugon into the water to mate with it, and Shin Godzilla is their mutant love child? That makes TOO MUCH SENSE!
Andy Semple Inspiration does exist. But truth be told, that makes a lot of sense.
In what universe do you live in where that theory makes an ounce of sense?
I've heard it explained that the back photons was actually the Nuclear Pulse in a different interpretation.
and they both fall asleep after there rampage
04:09. Hearing angelic voices singing "No Kenny! No Kenny!". Oh wait, that's just the video. XD
Never been a Gamera fan. But after recently seeing the 1995-99 Gamera trilogy, I wanted to watch the earlier films now. Just started watching the earlier films. First I watched your reviews, then I went onto the films themselves. Just finished War of the Monsters (Gamera vs. Barugon) last night, and loved it. A lot better than I thought, and surprisingly better than the first film.
Barugon is one of the most unique monsters in existence.
Bro every Godzilla video I watch you comment on it
So true
Gamera
Gamera,
He will take kids to his van
Touch them like no other can
Please don't tell on gamera!
A normal Godzilla oh god
This the one from ScrewAttack?
A normal Godzilla is kicking gamera’s a**
This isn’t a normal Godzilla for saying that.... and yes I liked it
The fact that your name is ”A normal Godzilla” makes it 1000% better XD
Great job, Brandon. You're such a brave man. I remember turning off the television half way through this movie and going outside to play. Thanks for letting me know how it ended. Bravo.
That title card maybe one of the greatest things ever made
18:27
Oh god, that was so unexpected. I died.
You know, I never thought to put on my bucket list "hear Brandon Tenold sing the Reading Rainbow theme," but I'm glad I can check it off now.
Holy shit, that Reading Rainbow gimmick was haunting.
Am I the only one who sees that Barugon is a chameleon? Still don't know why that means he can freeze things with his tongue but, meh.
Many years ago, the TV Guide gave this synopsis for this movie: A giant turtle fights a giant alligator. That was it, LOL! I, too, considered him a chameleon, however.
If a chasmosaurus, where's his frill? His beak? Why is his horn so long? Where did he get the spikes on his back? I bet you meant that he was a 'chameleonosaurus', a prehistoric reptile that was considered a nuisance by the citizens of Bedrock.
Brandon - "This is the first film I've seen where the monster's rampage is stopped by the monster taking a nap!"
Shin Gojira - "I have an idea... HOLD MY SAKÉ!"
Giant Gyaos in Guardian of the Galaxy: Way ahead of you.
Godzilla: WAY more ahead of you
Yeah
Not a film, but the original Ultraman had at least three separate kaijus that stopped their rampages to take a nap
"i knew those tanks shouldn't of brought pictures of their families" i lost it at that part xD good review! i love this film
I'm going to feel really sorry for Brandon when he has to review "Gamera Super Monster."
mrcydonia Seconded!
mrcydonia I’m gonna feel bad when he reviews Godzilla’s revenge
@@mrNobody0669 im gonna feel bad whenever he has to review godzilla 1998
@@oblivious4318 godzilla 1998 probably isn't that bad considering godzilla's revenge is just the spongebob special "truth or square" or the godzilla clip show movie that also is false advertising on the revenge bit cause aside from minilla wanting to get revenge on gabara, there's barely any "revenge", let alone one about godzilla wanting revenge besides maybe against the movie staff and production team.
Honestly i think godzilla 1998 would probably be liked more, if it wasn't advertised as a godzilla movie, and just a kaiju movie, but hey atleast the animated series for it was actually pretty good

"Is he working for the Koch Brothers or something?" Ooff. I'm watching this video shortly after David Koch's death lol
Japanese JonTron? lol
Watch out for the giant flying turtles!
And the scorpions that eat people!
WHAT?, no KENNY?????.
Always remember: If you see in a rainbow in the sky, chances are that at the end of it there's either a pot of gold, or a giant monster with a Gene Simmons Tongue of Death that can destroy buildings and freeze things.
When Gamera shows up:
Barugon: Top o' the morning to ya!

Japanese Jon Tron just killed me and I've seen this one like 10 times lol just caught that 😂
5:19 welcome, to Jurassic Park
"Where's my brother?" "There was an accident, he slipped and fell." (CROW: "...onto some live grenades!")
18:25 it could be that because there's obviously some kind of freezing liquid that his body starts to generate when he's fully grown.
Which in terms makes Barugon as a lizard very freezable and since his entire body was exposed to so much "cold" water it caused him to utterly freeze. Although I'm not sure why he was bleeding really.
11:37 I’m just waiting for godzilla to interrupt these two with his roar
I know you're riffing the movie and that's fine but the reason why Gamera attacks energy sources is so he can start a fire and feed off the fire. In the later movies he lives in a volcano so the magma feeds him so he won't have to attack power plants and buildings to eat fire.
One of the biggest problems I have with this movie, specifically the English-dubbed version, is the fact that it cut some parts out! In the original Japanese version, it actually explains, at least better explains, how and why Barugon is no longer affected by the diamond, as well where they got the diamond in the first place, and why water is his weakness. In fact, I think the Japanese version is still on youtube somewhere
"Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high, take a look it's in a book, it's reading rainbow."
This is one of my favorites in the Gammera series. No kids, and entertaining as hell.
Well, Baragon was recolored purple in Godzilla Unleashed.
That's not the same Baragon.
You mean barugon
Be careful, that meteor could have green slime monsters. They even have a catchy theme song.
JonTron reference! excellent!
I love this one. I mean Gamera looks amazing, Barugon is amazing, I think both suit actors are great, there's a story and no damn kids! I mean just watch Barugon as he hides and cautiously watches Gamera when he first shows up. As far as I care there's only this and the Guardian of the Universe trilogy.
"Japanese Jontron" Ha!
Evil japanese Jontron.
I aaaaaaain't having that shit!
captains epic mz Why?
I've seen comments elsewhere complaining that Gamera doesn't appear enough in this movie; maybe only a grand total of 20 minutes, but I think that was a deliberate choice by the makers that actually lifts this one above the normal brain-dead plots of many Japanese monster movies -- there is an actual human drama to this film; the monsters are part of the action, but not the main forces driving the plot. You have to wait for nearly an hour for Gamera to appear (after the brief introduction), so when he does, the suspense really pays off. The first encounter between Gamera and Barugon is a scene I'm sure has thrilled millions of young people over the years, and when I saw it as a child, it made a huge impression on me, even though Gamera gets frozen and doesn't reappear until the last 20 minutes of the movie. Credit must be given to the director for choosing to film many of the monster scenes at night, which gives an added creepiness and enhances the mood. I'd recommend viewing this movie in original Japanese with subtitles and in the widescreen format as it's presented here.
Soo Barugon is the one who wrote “tongue punch Margot Robbie in the fartbox”
🌈THE MORE YOU KNOW!!!!
In the "Epic Level Handbook" for third edition D&D, they had the Prismasuarus, which is....well, a dinosaur that can shoot magical rainbow beams from it's back. No, I have no idea why out of all the giant monsters they could have ripped off, they chose Barugon.
1. Kasuke's ambition was to open his own flying company
2. Onadera took his sweet time getting the first aid kit...after not warning him about the scorpion
3. It's my favorite Gamera movie , too. I watch it a LOT, while I rarely view the others!
Great. Now I can't see Barugon die without hearing the theme song to Reading Rainbow.
So I guess they killed off Kenny.
***** Oh my god, they killed Kenny!

That subtle jab at people comparing about Godzilla 2014 warms my heart.
If more people saw a Godzilla movie before maybe they would’ve know if they like Godzilla movies.
KiriUzu Exactly. The main monster not having much screen time is a trope not only in Godzilla films, but monster movies in general.
@Chris Conley technically, if you compile all seconds you see the Big-G from Godzilla 2014 and Gojira 1954 (including newspaper clippings, TV displays, ETC.)
Godzilla 2014=11 mins approx
Gojira 1954=8 mins approx
Tbf all the teasing and cutting throughout the movie didnt help
But still true lol
Gamera, Gamera
Sneaking kids into his van,
Catch em like nobody can,
Please don’t tell on Gamera
Barugon must be one of the most ridiculous monsters in a monster movie.
This was the first Gamera film I watched and even after seeing the other showa films, this one was my favorite from the series. Reboots were the best.
Brandon I have two questions for you.
Will you ever do the Carnosaur Films on the show and If you ever Finnish the showa Godzilla films, will you do the hesei and millennium films?
Nobody realizes that Brandon sings the Reading Rainbow theme song when Barugon dies?
My favorite joke in the whole video
15:56 that screaming scared the hell out of me
When Gamerathon is over, is there hope in seeing you review the dark 90's Trilogy and 2006's Gamera The Brave?
Shazamthepus Brandon's plan is to do only the Showa-era films, and save the other (better) Gamera films for next year.

Barugon was originally suppose to be Gamera's number one enemy, because of the fire and ice concepts, but they later decided to make Gyaos the number one enemy because of popularity
4:07 Ode to Joy! Hallelujah!
07:39. Actually Gamera is the bringer of misery with his Tokyo Stomp/eco-stomp. Kenny is just his herald of doom. ;)
I think this is one of your most consistently entertaining and funny reviews yet, Brandon. Keep it up man!
Weird Japanese black face of Papuan New Guineans, I guess going south and shooting part of the movie in New Guinea was out of the question.
I still don’t get why this isn’t called Gamera-thon, instead of Gamera-a-thon. Still, these videos are endlessly watchable. I’ve seen them each 3 or more times.
Gamera: *Forgets to wear green*
Barugon: *TASTE THE RAINBOW MOTHERFUCKER!!!!*
Dude, loving this channel. Marathoning your Gamera reviews at 2am in Tokyo!
I'm pretty much with you here. This is also my favourite Gamera movie from the classics. This also happens to be the vry first Gamera Movie I've watched. And it was NOT what I was looking for. Yea, in Germany this movie was advertised as a GODZILLA movie. Barugon was called Godzilla. And Gamera was called Barugon. Needless to say, I was quite confused when I watched the movie.
Gamera vs. Barugon is my favorite Gamera- and one of my favorite kaiju-movies.
1:12: Ha! It's funny 'cause Gamera and Godzilla still haven't gotten around to fighting each other, yet.
They can't Gamera is made by Daiei and Godzilla is Toho property.
Every once in a while, I have to add one of your videos to the Best Videos Ever playlist.
love your vids guy. I remember this movie from childhood. man when I saw baragon's shimmering rainbow ray, I was utterly awed by it. I thought it was the most beautiful thing ever. I was like 6.
09:33 Monsternastics. It's why all the monsters are so buff when they box each other in fighting montage.
Gam-nastics
16:01 awesome villain death.
the director tried his very best to create a good film here - God bless what he wrought as it is more entertaining than any large budget you could give him - 🛸👽💚
Watch out for Barugon's ultimate attack: *the Gay Ray*
The Japanese title was called, Duel of the Monsters (Gamera vs Baragon).
"just gonna give up? ok" my favorite line of the video
Though I saw why you didn't use a taste the rainbow joke, I believe a rendition of Sia's Diamond could have been used. As for the the creators.... man, LSD and monster movies do NOT mix.
HEY...HEEEYYYYYY....BRANDON....you got any more of them...godzilla reviews

Destroy All Planets, my favorite Gamera movie too...1)Barugon doesn't look corny 2)no flashback fill-ins 3)NO KENNY.
That Mike Huckabee comment sealed it for me.
Gamera: "DO YOU ACCEPT LORD BLUNDERGOSH AS YOUR SAVIOR?"
"That monster will follow a 6000 karat diamond anywhere."
Odd. The same can be said for a large number of human women.
Are we gonna ignore the fact that THAT IS LITERALLY A STAR DESTROYER AT 0:39
Love your videos keep them up
I started watching Gamera films when I was a pre-teen, and one Saturday night our local Creature Feature showed Gamera vs Guiron and then Gamera vs Viras. I was hooked. First I loved the knife-nosed Guiron, and would have watched any Gamera film after that. I did not see the original film until I was in my mid-twenties. For me this film is my third least favorite since I thought it was slow and boring, but not as bad as the one with Gyaos. That is the worst. It never seems to move. By the time Gamera vs Zigra, I was weary of all the flashbacks, and was glad that I had only one Gamera film I had not seen Jiger. When I finally found that one, I watched it--in my mid 30s and realized it was NOT as bad as the original, Gyaos, or Barugon. So, for me, they rank #1 Guiron, Viras, Jiger, and then the original, Barugon, and finally, Gyaos. Still, I would jettison any of these to watch a rerun of the greatest SCI-FI b-movie ever--Mission Stardust. I adore Thora. Yes, even though she does not change her clothing as often as Barbarella she is super hot. Of course, Mamie Van Doren is super hot in Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women. I think I will watch that one now. I really like it too.
"It's worth everything we've gone through!"
You mean a lady saying you were going to a hill instead of a cave, then one of you just shooting a scorpion instead of stepping on it? Yeah, you guys really went through so much!
15:54 that effect is beautiful
If brandon drew those thumbnails he is very good at it👁️👄👁️
Gotta agree with this being the best Showa Gamera film. I've been consistently disappointed that they never brought Barugon back. I mean, Zedus from Gamera The Brave was literally just the same thing but bipedal and without any awesome powers.
Finally, a new episode
FOUND JOHN HAMMOND XDD!
I'm glad you have the Japanese version. Daiei must have taken great care to restore and remaster the film's quality. Unlike the US DVD version.
Great review Brandon! I also rank this among my fave Showa era Gamera films thanks to its welcome lack of Kennys & how fun & bizarre a monster Barugon honestly is :3. I also like Gamera Vs Gyaos, since despite the presence of a Kenny, it introduces Gamera's best big bad Gyaos, & some really fun fight scenes :D
I want my own functional battlemech, I would call it the Timberwolf.
