This movie came out (and I saw it on the big screen, by the way) in 1968 -- the same year that "2001 - A Space Odyssey" came out. But this movie had a way groovier theme song.

The song is the _only_ good thing about this movie, which is only 'good' when viewed in a 'Movie For A Saturday/Sunday Afternoon' type/frame of mind.

According to Wikipedia (yeah, I know) the MPAA ratings system went into effect the same year this movie came out (1968). And at that time, the ratings were G--suggested for general audiences, M--suggested for mature audiences, R--Restricted - persons under 16 not admitted, unless accompanied by parent or adult guardian and X, persons under 16 not admitted. In the 70s, M was changed to GP, which then changed to PG in 1972 and R was changed from under 16 required an adult to under 17 required an adult. PG-13 came along in 1984 (heh) and in 1990 X was changed to NC-17.
So, basically the ratings system at the time of this movie's release was a beta version and has been revised several times since then.

And the reason they stopped using the x rating is because porn movies started giving it to themselves because the ratings system is basically voluntary, and the MPAA officially retired the X rating in favor of NC-17 because they couldn’t get them to stop.

Movies aren't universally bad now, it's just that you've outgrown the silly, campy, immature stories that entertained you as a kid. What's worse is that as adults we can predict all the beats and plot twists because Hollywood just keeps rehashing them.

Fun fact: this movie was a source of inspiration for Tom Wham. He worked for TSR in the early days as a game designer and writer for Dragon Magazine. Anyway, he created Awful Green Things From Outer Space and cited this as an inspiration in the designer's notes.

This film is like a story line that could be used for one of the alien movies :) I’ve ordered this on Blu-ray, I’ve always had a soft spot for this film, even though the creatures look silly, they still bring a sense of danger to the film

Well dude, I'd take those "rubber' monsters over those stupid COMPUTER ANIMATED ones that you see in every other movie coming out of Hollywood TODAY! 3:35 actually, I think maybe the 1979 flick titled 'Meteor had the right idea - fire at it with missiles. Evidently rated G meant something quite different than what it would later come to mean.

Wow, the "William Finger" actually IS the guy who co-created Batman with Bob Kane. He also co-created Green Lantern, according to Wiki. And, the producers actually did intend for this to be a sort of sequel to "Wild, Wild Planet" and "War of the Planets".

Growing up my brothers and I loved this movie. Would come on regular TV on Monster movie Saturdays once in a while. Last year I was able to get on Blu Ray. Not the greatest movie but I still enjoy it.
Glad to have watched your review and found your page.
