Brad Dourif is like Jeffrey Combs, they can make pretty much any movie work just by playing a crazy character in it.
Gotta respect Brad Dourif, an once academy award nominee who started to play any role as long as they were bizarre just for the fun of it.
He got raped by Powers Boothe with the help of his prayer warriors in that Jim Jones the Guyana Tragedy movie. And that was based on a true story so I'm guessing there's more actual weirdness out there than Dourif will ever get to portray.

Mel Blanc stated that Sylvester's voice is pretty much Daffy's, only with a more exaggerated, slobbery lisp.

When you said “Porkins is not pleased with the situation” and I thought I had gotten the Stars Wars reference and then it hit me that it really was the actual Porkins from Star Wars and there was another level to the joke. Genius 👍
Im late to the party but: the gun with the life rounds that was used in the elevator scene was DANTES gun. You even see the marking it has on the side. Thats why it was loaded with real bullets

The Machine POV shots in this movie were some of the best, most frantic depictions of a merciless machine tracking its prey.
Great SFX too.
Brad Dourif is absolutely bonkers in this movie and it is a thing of beauty.
Brad Dourif is absolutely fantastic and always a joy to watch. His voice work as Chucky is great. In this film when he says "god that was stupid" he sounds exactly like Chucky :P

Brad is so great because no matter how high class or how low class that his role is, he simply CRUSHES it every time. He only knows 100%!
When it was showed in Thailand, they changed the title of the film from "Death machine" to "Iron Alien".

This movie was awesome when it came out! Everything was about either robots or cyborgs in the mid 90s and so is this flick. Brad Dourif definitely steals the show but others are good as well (didn't know William Hootkins was in Hardware!) and the Death Machine itself is freakin' creepy with its large metal teeth.

I think the biggest thing that kept this movie from cult status was its heavy reliance on references to other movies or their directors. A good reference is fun to throw in here and there, but naming a major character "John Carpenter" "Sam Raimi" or "Scott Ridley" is a bit ridiculous. The movie is entertaining but its writing could have been better. That's just my opinion.

This has a a real Carnasour Vibe. Man the early 90s where the golden age of we have a couple of coridor sets an opressive soundtrack and some B actors...lets make a movie.

@@ig-8892 I think some was filmed in LA, but I was there when they did several scenes at pinewood…..remember seeing them film a scene in a corridor and also helped throw some small bits of paper in front of a fan when they were filming a close up of the robot attacking! 😊 I remember the director was very stressed and shouting a lot 😂

Brad Dourif even in a role as a good person like a Babylon 5 episode he was in, he still is creepy and kind of serial killer and he was playing a Holy man! Who loved helping others and giving gifts, still freaky as hell. But he did act the shit out of that part.

I'm so grateful that I was able to acquire the director's cut of this film on Blu-ray. So far the only version that was available was in Germany by Turbine Studios. Sadly they stopped producing the Blu-ray a year ago. It is absolutely criminal that the US has not acquired a Blu-ray release of this. This is something that Arrow videos should definitely release
This movie is criminally underrated. Granted some scenes are a little goofy and the acting isn't always the best but it's still awesome and so much fun. Brad Dourif, as always, is fantastic and the death machine/warbeast is so bad ass. I love every bit of this movie regardless of how corny it can be at times lol.
The guy who played Scott Ridley was also the bar manager in Kingsman who tests Eggsy by tying him to the underground tracks.
oh I remember this movie. When I was much younger it was one of the first movies that put me onto robotic styled movies right alongside robocop. I loved it then, and i love it now.
I had this as a kid. It still holds up.
I love this dumb movie.
Also I might suggest "The Demolitionist" (1995).
It's another cyberpunk cheesefest that you'll enjoy.

Awesome to see such a fun review of my favorite movie! Great work, dude. :D That part where you mentionned Dourif spitting all over the place had me in tears. Partly because, not even kidding, i've read the script, and the spitting actually *is* written in there. Amazing. (...Nitpicking fangirl moment: the reason the gun Carpenter uses to threaten Cale, Raimi and Yutani in the elevator has actual bullets in it is because that gun belonged to Dante! It has Dante's little logo drawn on the muzzle :D)
for me is cult classsic. it contain so many amazing things. characters, directing, death machine, amazing visuals, and creepy exciting atmosphere of future and kind of smart setting of action in this movie.
For a low-budget, direct-to-video Alien/Diehard/Robocop/Terminator clone, this actually isn't bad. It's surprisingly artsy, and you can see some flashes of real talent in Stephen Norrington's direction. It was obvious he would go on to do bigger and better things. It's unfortunate that directing The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was such a horrible experience that it caused him to retire from the movie business. Damn that movie! I'd rather watch this movie 50 times than watch LXG once.

I actually kind of feel sorry for Jack Dante. He's being acted by Brad well enough that even though he's clearly a terrifying horrible person, he also very clearly has a major crush on Cale but has no idea how to express it in a socially appropriate manner, which he finds a source of great misery. And I never watched this movie, I based it off the clips of Brad Dourif's performance in this review.
Yea if This film had a soundtrack I can see it having some awesome industrial metal and industrial rock bands. Like Rammstein, NIN, KMFDM, Ministry, Godflesh and Die Krupps.

To answer your question, this film actually _does_ have a soundtrack, which was released with a limited blu-ray release in Germany.
Not a bad one, Brad Dourif is awesome in it.

I think Brad Douriff's character was actually named after a character in Raising Caine, also named Jack Dante, which came out a couple of years earlier.
Incidentally, the "Directors Cut" is basically just an extended workprint. The European version, available on UK DVD, is the difrectors preffered version. The US DVD cuts out an entire sub plot and trims the gore.

Maybe Brad Dourif's most insane role. A lot of fun.
I remember watching this on HBO when I was a teen. It's the movie that got me to start renting movies from the rental stores that weren't just produced for theaters. Always loved the design of the Death Machine, and the weird ass joints the guys rolled.
Let us not forget the late and great William Hootkins, who was none other than Porkins himself. He also played Zarkov's assistant (and plane fodder) in FLASH GORDON, as well as one of the "top men" in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. He was also the creepy pedo in HARDWARE who gets his eyes boinked out by another death machine.

You missed the excellent scene where Dante instead of pulling out the knife - rips his hand through the knife.
I watched this film on VHS back in the day and for a film made on a 6.5 mil budget... it's actually pretty good despite the scripting in certain parts. Brad has all the best lines in this film and basically steals the show.
I have to say, I like this movie quite a bit.. albeit with a caveat.
The "99 minute" version is okay, as it is fairly straightforward and has nothing but references to Stephen Norrington's heroes. *But* ... the version to watch is the 120 minute extended version, which alters the movie from fanboy wankery akin to NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (which I also adore regardless of the plethora of name dropping in that movie as well) to something along the lines of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, as one of the major plot lines cut from the 99 minute cut involve Ely Pouget's character being so adamant against CHAANK hurting children because she accidentally killed her baby in a garbage disposal. So the Death Machine turns from an "Alien Queen/ Terminator" hybrid into the vengeful spirit of her dead baby (or her guilt) relentlessly pursuing her for punishment for her carelessness.
PS: the 120 minute cut was released last year on blu-ray by Turbine in Germany, along with the CD soundtrack. Really nice HD picture too!
The 120-minute version was also released on VHS in Australia, after being banned from theatrical release.

I know this review is old-ish but one thing I am really surprised over is that Brandon himself did not make a Terminator joke at all, and Raimi did it himself.

I recall renting this movie and popping it into the VCR on a friday evening, while lighting up a blunt. It was pretty good actually. If someone figured out a way to make a functional robot that looked like that, it would be a terrifying death for sure. It's jaws opened and closed so rapidly that it would turn you into chunky pudding. I never could recall the name of it until I ran Into this RUclips video. Thanks for the reminder.

THANK YOU! I saw a DVD for this so long ago and it looked cool but I had no money. I forgot the title and could only recognize it by the cover art and screenshots on the back. I'll have to watch it now.

Well Brandon - you definitely chose a good film to review: It's got interesting visuals, decent characters and Brad Duraf is always a delight to see - if only to see him be his crazy-ass self.

Finally, another movie I've actually watched. And own. I love this movie. It is so delightfully cheesy. And, as the review stats, Brad Dourif is wonderfully over the top on it.
For the record, one place to find it is in the "Best of Sci-Fi DVD" set - assuming you can find THAT anymore. Which is where I obtained my copy. Sadly, the rest of the set was stolen (which is a shame, because I bought the set for Evolver), but this movie wasn't with the set when that happened.

This was such an awesome movie..... i've watched such a long time ago, i've nearly forgotten all about it. Time to track it down again!
i really love this movie - it's like scream for the action-sci-fi genre. but one thing im absolutely sure about: heath ledger must have seen this and let himself be inspired by dourifs interpretation of dante for his joker. the scene in the office when dante meets the girl for the first time, screams joker all way through.

CBU 2029 actually Heath was inspired by a musician.
Porkins got the weapon from Dante, the Desert Eagle was one of many they took from him. But my choice would be the deadliest weapon of all, the rubber chicken.
The guy with the red face paint is named Yutani and the long haired bound guy was named Weyland. Named for Weyland Yutani corporation in the Aliens film.

This was a favourite of mine and my friends' back in the day, glad to see it getting some recognition. One of us even nicked Yutani's haircut
