I feel kind of sorry for Ghidorah in this movie. For most of the runtime, he's being controlled by someone else. Can you imagine when the computer controlling him was destroyed and the first thing he saw was a pissed off Godzilla in his face? He's suddenly aware, wondering what the hell is going on and Godzilla just kicks his ass.

    From tvtropes
In general, the film's time travel antics create a lot of confusion among fans about what is and isn't still a part of history in the later films. However, careful analysis reveals that the Futurians actually changed nothing but in fact created a Stable Time Loop and a Predestination Paradox where every Heisei-era film, as well as the 1954 film, all still happened, only with the Futurians now responsible for the Heisei Godzilla's existence. Thus references to the the original film and Biollante being made in the later films is not actually an error as most fans believe.
In a nutshell, the previous belief in the series until this film was that the original 1954 Godzilla and the one that appeared in 1984 were the same individual. This film established they were in fact, two different creatures with the events of this film's 1940s scenes causing the future Heisei Godzilla to be created from a submarine accident in the 1980s. However this wasn't clearly communicated, especially in the dubs, so the revelation flew over a lot of viewers' heads.

    • @WatcherMovie008
      @WatcherMovie008 5 лет назад +25

Wikizilla already did a thorough explanation with the time travel plot. Long story short, the original 1954 Godzilla was not the Heisei Godzilla, something which was overlooked and if people actually paid attention, the main character notices the issue when he reads up on a nuclear sub that sank in the Bearing Sea in the 1950s, just after they teleported the Godzillasaurus from Lagos.

@@WatcherMovie008 First time I watched this I hadn't seen the original Gojira since I was a little kid, so, didn't actually know that the original was a one shot monster. It makes sense, though, since stopping the original from being created wouldn't have stopped the "actual" one from all the previous movies from being created. And, the sub they sent to "recreate" Gojira just ended up making the main Godzilla stronger. I get it, now, finally.

As a diehard fan of the Big G, I will ATTEMPT to clear up some of this film's confusion.
The Millennium series has almost zero continuity except for Tokyo SOS being a direct sequel to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. The Showa and Heisei films indicate that there were always two different Godzillas - one that was disintegrated by the Oxygen Destroyer in 1954, and the second one being the one we follow throughout every subsequent film. No entry has ever addressed the exact origin of the first Godzilla. The one on Lagos was always the second Godzilla. The Futurians only altered the source of his radiation exposure from the H-Bomb on Bikini island to a downed Russian nuclear sub in the Bering Sea. Other than that, everything that happened in Godzilla 1985 and Vs. Biollante transpired verbatim as before.
The Futurians technically do explain the time paradox, albeit very poorly. The dinosaur expert, Professor Mazaki, outright asks them why don't bring Shindo or any other veterans to the past, and Grenchiko explains that one person "can't be in the same point in time more than once". This is why they can't go back and teleport the dinosaur again because then the Futurians themselves would be duplicated, blah blah blah.
The Futurians' goal was to destroy MOST of Japan and then only keep the survivors alive if they surrendered to the Futurians' very specific demands that would allow them to thrive but not enough to become a superpower. With Ghidorah defeated, the Futurians technically still won since Japan wouldn't become a superpower; the only difference is that the uncontrollable Godzilla would undoubtedly wipe them out completely. If Shindo hadn't sent his own sub, Godzilla could've potentially remained in hibernation in the Bering Sea for a long time.
As for Shindo, there are many theories, but personally, I think he figured out that Godzilla was going to kill him. He spent decades thinking the dinosaur saved him on purpose so he could become a tycoon and rebuild Japan, but now that all his prosperity was being destroyed by the same dinosaur, he finally realized that Godzilla was only protecting himself, so Shindo and his men benefited by happenstance. The cinematography and editing of that scene suggest that Godzilla does recognize Shindo - he probably killed him because he was enraged that Shindo abandoned him to die, even though he had no choice.
All of this, of course, still doesn't fix the surplus of plot holes in this movie. How did the H-Bomb make three tiny Dorats so much larger than a forty-foot dinosaur? What was King Ghidorah doing in the new timeline from the H-Bomb test in 1954 till the Futurians came to control it with their supercomputer in 1992? Just living on the island minding its own business? How did Emmy not know what her cohorts were planning? Why didn't she try to stop them sooner? She claims that they had to destroy Japan in this manner because, "After the 20th century, all nuclear weapons are banned." That's absurd even in a Godzilla film! Even if every country that possessed such weapons agreed to ban them and deplete their stockpiles, scientists are still trying to master nuclear fusion as an energy source, so we'll always have the capacity to make more weapons. Also, who gave Emmy the authority (and budget) to revive King Ghidorah as Mecha-King Ghidorah? She already admitted her partners stole the time machine in the first place. Now her superiors are willing to just send her back in the past with a giant cyborg weapon to do as she pleases? Why is Mecha-King Ghidorah weaker than King Ghidorah? The original kicked Godzilla's butt until they lost control of it. Now that Emmy's controlling it AND it has lasers and armor it's somehow less powerful than before?
*sigh, I still adore this movie. I'm a sucker for the "alliance of convenience" cliche ("The enemy of my enemy is my friend"), and this movie is rife with it. I also love Shindo's character arc. It's like something out of a Greek tragedy. M-ll, despite being an obvious rip-off of the Terminator, is fun to watch. This film also has probably the best jokes of any entry in the franchise (the Spielberg reference is just the tip of the iceberg). Akira Ifukube's score is glorious to listen to. I love it.
...I've thought about this way too much, haven't I?
Great review as always, Brandon. Can't wait for the next one - even if Godzilla isn't involved ;)

Fun fact: in the novelization for GvKG, it's stated that the Dorats were genetically engineered from a Ghidorah carcass found on Venus.
So technically, 1991 Ghidorah actually _is_ from outer space...they just kind of took the roundabout way to do it.

11:26 I still remember how ridiculous that line was and how poorly delivered too. But I had a foot tall Mecha King Ghidorah toy in the early 90s. There was a great comic shop in my town called Young's Newsstand. There were lots of imported monster toys for sale and I got Mecha KG for my birthday. I had no idea about the Heisei movies but a cyborg version of Godzilla's greatest enemy was an awesome toy.

Ive always theorized this is the film that created the heisei timeline in universe.
That before this the Showa timeline existed, and moving the lagos island Dinosaur prevents the second Godzilla from the Godzilla "raids again" era onwards from coming to Japan until 1984.
But as the characters are viewing things from the post change universes perspective, they dont know that the showa era was erased and so events of Godzilla Returns onwards exists for them but none of the showa events do.
Resulting in a weird time loop effect where it looks like they did nothint, but as an outside audience our only awareness of the change is effectively the new continuity.

2:55 “The English dubs I grew up on all called him Ghidrah.”
Well, actually, they only called him Ghidrah for his first 2 films (Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster in 1964 and Godzilla Vs. Monster Zero in 1965). However, staring with his 3rd appearance in the film Destroy All Monsters in 1968, they started calling him King Ghidorah and have called him King Ghidorah ever since then. So, one argument could be made that he should be called Ghidrah since that is what he was originally called while another argument could be made that he should be called Ghidorah because he’s called that in every single film he’s in after Monster Zero. So, really, I think you can call him by either name since he was referred to as both, in the original series of films.
