The fact that Destoroyah was so powerful that they filmed an alternate ending where he and Godzilla waged war until they both died just further certified that he is my favorite Godzilla villain ever. He pushed Godzilla further than anyone else and had it not been for Burning Godzilla's boosted power, he likely would've killed him and then wiped out all life on Earth. Godzilla vs Destoroyah truly made the franchise come full circle. Godzilla fighting the very thing that killed the original Godzilla is a great end to an era.
Well said, if this was intended to be the ending of the movie franchise I'd say it did it in spectacular fashion. It lived up to everything that had lead up to this finale throughout the Hesei era and that final scene where it does come full circle gets me every single time.
I'd love to see Godzilla Junior again in a future film, with him in his adult age. His difference in regards to his father being that Junior is much more docile and friendly to humans makes me wonder how much he and his father would get along as adults together.
Years and years later, Godzilla’s death still makes my heart clench. I remember being utterly devastated as a kid watching him melt away- it was almost like watching a friend die. Along with that, Destroyah’s first attack on Junior was so gruesome to kid-me that I had to turn away until the fight was done. You can tell that Godzilla was so furious he walked right up to destroyah, instead of how he normally would slowly go up or start with an atomic breath.
Imagine watching this era in order for the first time and being hit emotionally at the "death" of this Godzilla in Return, being relieved at it's return in Biollante, only to see it die for real in Destroyah. I feel the greatest contribution the continuity of the Heisei era brings is in how it allows you to have a greater emotional connection and reaction to characters experiencing struggle and triumph, chief among them Godzilla and Jr, but even some humans as well. Great set of videos. I've learned stuff I hadn't from elsewhere and seen footage I've never seen before. Well done!
I'm really enjoying these Godzilla reviews/retrospectives. I grew up watching him on TV repeated every few weekends, while he was on the comic stands, on the toy shelves (oddly rocket-punching) and on Staurday mornings as a cartoon, so he'll always hold a special place in my heart and memories. But, now thanks to you so will the people responsible for giving him to me. Thanks for these videoes.
This is the best retrospect of Godzilla vs destoroyah I have ever seen and you can tell this guy is a real Godzilla fan... I am enjoying all of the Godzilla videos on this channel
i got a bit teary eyed during this video, learning that not only was this the death of godzilla, but a lot of people who brought godzilla to life died as well and the recent passing of kenpachiro satsuma didn't make watching this video any easier. but it is good to know despite all the original creative people behind godzilla are long since past, their legacy still lives on to this day.
This movie and that Era was so special. As a kid and a 41 year man. I cry at the ending of this movie everytime and godzilla son death also. Beautiful movie and series. My family loves the Godzilla movies
I got to see G v Destroyah at a special viewing during that year's Okakon, along with a select few hundred people. As far as I know it was the only theatrical showing of the film in America. His meltdown scene, emotionally fueled by 'Requiem" literally brought me to tears. I had been - and continue to be - a G fan since I was a very young child, and that was, to me, easily the most emotional scene in any Godzilla film.
This is by far the best Godzilla film and it still makes me weep when I see the ending, thank you so much for your in depth reviews and history of my favorite kaiju
Man, I'm just catching up on your History series. Blew through the whole Heisei series in two days. Incredible work! You show the reverence these films deserve, but aren't afraid to call them out on their weak points. This has never been my favorite Godzilla film, even in the Heisei series. Outside of the last act, I'm not a huge fan. I still like it, but not as much as many of the other films in the series. I get why people are obsessed with it, I've just never been. Part of me feels bad given the weight put on it as the end of Godzilla, though. I cried hard when I first saw this film. I didn't get to see it until 1999 when it was released in the US, but I was 18 so I didn't know where else I could have gotten it. The end still hits and I still cry when Godzilla dies. Further rewatches have softened me a bit to it, but I still prefer all the Heisei films over it barring Space Godzilla. 10/10 on the video, though. Also, Happy Birthday to Akira Ifukube who would have been 106 this year (his death anniversary was two days ago - 2/8).
The forms it takes seem to be. There’s a land form, and a sky form, and a sea form, if you insider the microscopic form that was found in the soil taken from the bay, and not to mention a massive final form. But that’s about it, I think
"OK...they're covering Godzilla vs. Desutoroyah...I'm ready to watch this." ****21:38**...The first bars of 'Requiem' play...** "I AM IN NO WAY READY... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭"
This video made me tear up hard. Godzilla Vs Destoroyah represents the end of so much. Not only is it the end of the Heisei era, the end of Akira Ifukube’s career, the final appearance of the first ever female lead of the Godzilla franchise, it would represent the death of an icon in Japanese history and culture.
I wonder which suit Satsuma found the most difficult to perform in: the Desugoji suit obviously made it difficult to breathe, but the 84goji suit wasn't made with his measurements in mind.
Satsuma said the Godzilla 1984 suit was a nightmare to work in... And far and away his least favorite Godzilla suit. But he said the most difficult one to act in was the one from Godzilla versus destroyer... It weighed well over 240 lb
I never was much too interested in Godzilla but this series is turning me into a fan. I really want to watch all these movies now. The amount of historical context you give is extremely interesting and this series is super entertaining. I love all of them so far. But I can't find the Ebirah video!
Maybe it was because I could tell that the bigger suit was used for the final shot, but I always assumed that it was the main Godzilla that returns in the final shot in a phoenix-esque fashion, not Godzilla Jr. Either way, the final moments of this movie gives me chills every time, and I definitely still tear up at the end.
Idea: Minus One sequel that gives a Miki cameo. Maybe Miki now leads a G-Force psychics department. Something both important but not demanding on the actress. Maybe Noriko(Minus One) has a descendant with a link to Godzilla from her exposure in the Ginza Attack, and that descendent is tapped by G-Force for help with whatever is going on.
The Heisei era was, and will always be, my favorite era. It had my favorite monsters, characters, and incarnation of my hero, Godzilla. Cried when I saw him die, then got so excited when he was "reborn".
Amazing research into this film. I actually learned a lot here. This is the first video of yours I found and it looks like I'll have quite a bit more to watch too! Keep up the awesome work! :D I can't wait to see more!
The finale still breaks my heart but dammit do I love the fact this movie can make me have that reaction. Godzilla's practically going "My son is dead. I have nothing. Please end it." at the humans cooling him down.
An interesting fact about this film is that Toho, in an effort to increase profitability, actually gave this movie less money and less production time than any film since biolante. As a matter of fact, they only had six weeks to build all the miniatures, and only 3 weeks post production. Toho demanded the film be ready by a certain date and they actually ended up editing in some shots that had not been fully composited yet, which greatly irritated koichi kawakita. The film was also due for one more run through the edit to tighten it up more, but Toho locked the production down so the version you see is in many respects still not the final version they were editing for. In spite of all this, it deserves its reputation as one of the greatest Godzilla films ever with some of the most striking visual effects.
This was an emotional one for me. This film came out the year I was born. I can remember watching it along with the Showa Era films with my dad on Saturday mornings when he was off work. I cant say enough how much those mornings meant to me.
Regarding the conference rooms being named after Toho Monsters, here's another fun fact: when I worked for a business hosting solutions company, Sunrise was one of our customers. All of their servers were named after various mecha from UC Gundam, and I once got a service request to reboot the Qubeley. I'm guessing this must be a trend for entertainment companies in Japan.
I love that your channel comes up in my feed all the time. In the tokusetsu war I'm a kamen rider fan. But kaijus have always been a close second. And none of my friend's wanna talk to me about them XD. So hearing history and your takes is great.
This may be insane of me but this is usually the first godzilla movie i show to people who’ve never seen one before. It is truly the culmination of all things beautiful about godzilla movies, it has action, is beautifully shot, and is genuinely emotional. I dont have enough good things to say about this movie
When Destroyahs final form is revealed, I’m always reminded of Silence of the Lambs (I know random). Something about the lighting, music and reveal of Destroyahs demonic form reminds me of Hannibals escape, and the police discovering the guards body hanging from the ceiling
My favorite godzilla suit of all time. He's just on fire in everyway in this movie the bursting orange orb lighting displayed all over his body is a legendary design, the destruction of Tokyo with him tumbling over buildings film gave me the different feel from the previous film most definitely an than I realized that godzilla vs Destroyer is pound for pound my favorite godzilla film of all time you really get it all in this movie.
I finally found a way to watch all the Heisei films subbed and in decent quality (since the first four are OOP and insanely expensive) and so I could at last view my blu-ray of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. I was a little worried my expectations would be too high due to this film's positive reputation and I'd be let down, but wow, it blew me away. I like how it took itself seriously, even more so than most of the other Heisei films. I'm in agreement with you that Godzilla's final march gave me goosebumps. I love how they just let the music play and let Godzilla march virtually uninterrupted as it really sold the feel that this was the finale to this series of films. Also, that version of the march has always been my favorite, yet I had no idea it was in this film so even though I already knew the basic plot, the movie still found a way to surprise me. For me, this is easily my favorite Heisei film and it's now in my top 3 Godzilla movies altogether, right along with the original Godzilla and Shin Godzilla. I desperately hope some type of Heisei blu-ray collection comes out because it's really worthy of it. Anyway, thank you for your effort on this video; it is a great companion to the movie.
Absolutely excellent work with these history videos man. Good thing I checked your channel since goofy yt never notified me about this one or the last 3 xD Keep up the great work!
Having Godzilla be give a time limit at the beginning is such a cool and somber way to start the film, basically saying "one way or another, Godzilla will die"
Awesome video this has always been one of my favorite not just Godzilla but overall movies. The scene when appears for the final battle still gives me goosebumps also and the death scene reminds me that there's something in my eye. I think it could have been more tear inducing if you played raymond bur's final speech from 1985 before junior's appearance at the end.

I had been - and continue to be - a G fan since I was a very young child, and that was, to me, easily the most emotional scene in any Godzilla film.
This is a great piece. Thanks for all the great info. I love this movie and that last scene is just remarkable.
I thought I knew everything to know about Godzilla.....then I found your channel, these are my favorite videos on youtube
24:38 still one of the most haunting and chilling quotes of all time
oh man, this video made me emotianal. I did teared up while you were talking about Tanaka. Love this series.
This is by far the best Godzilla film and it still makes me weep when I see the ending, thank you so much for your in depth reviews and history of my favorite kaiju
I teared up a lot more than I thought I would watching this video
I wonder how much of Destoroyah was based on Bagan.
Probably not much since Bagan was briefly considered early on but got forgotten quite quickly
The forms it takes seem to be. There’s a land form, and a sky form, and a sea form, if you insider the microscopic form that was found in the soil taken from the bay, and not to mention a massive final form. But that’s about it, I think
"OK...they're covering Godzilla vs. Desutoroyah...I'm ready to watch this."
****21:38**...The first bars of 'Requiem' play...**
"I AM IN NO WAY READY... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭"
Welp. This video goes on a list of youtube vid essays that have made me cry. This series is so appreciated.
I can't stop watching these videos, trust me I tried.
Megumi was always a cutie in the 90s Godzilla films especially with those ears :-)
These are phenomenal, well thought videos. You should do videos covering the history of the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy!
I never was much too interested in Godzilla but this series is turning me into a fan. I really want to watch all these movies now. The amount of historical context you give is extremely interesting and this series is super entertaining. I love all of them so far. But I can't find the Ebirah video!
I'm redoing my showa era videos, Ebirah is what im working on now!
All the movies, good and bad, are a fun ride.
This is the only Godzilla movie that ever got me to shed a tear. I bloody love this movie and will continue to do so.
Dude I was already tearing up when Godzilla died, but Mikki crying over him absolutely ruined me. Such an amazing tearjerking moment
Love, love your Godzilla movie history series!!
I love this movie but as a kid and as an adult it makes me cry...
This video makes me so emotional. It's the perfect ending to the best era of godzilla movies ever.
Wow! You have some amazing work here. Thanks for rehashing everything.
Your videos mean a lot to me. I can see all the hard work you put into making these videos. Please dont stop soon.
Tremendous Essay! This has been extremely entertaining. Great writing, pacing, information, and just plain awesome. Thank you.
20:08 this track will also return in Godzilla 2000
Makes sense, growing up I've always been obsessed with 3 things, Aliens, Predators, and Godzilla
Same bro.
I really hope at toho the bathroom is called the gamera room
20:54
Hahaha, the MLG glasses on Godzilla
That last shot always gives me chills and the Godzilla death song always leave me teary
Thank you for these videos man. Absolutely stunning retrospective on a franchise I grew up with. The ending of this 1 made me emotional!
I'm sorry, " altercation" ? A struggle?
@@jefftappan7973 What?
toho: were out of ideas well give usa the hand for godzilla movies
*21 years later*
shin godzilla: toho do u think im a joke?
This movie still gives me chills when godzilla rolls up on destroyer
Absolutely excellent work with these history videos man. Good thing I checked your channel since goofy yt never notified me about this one or the last 3 xD Keep up the great work!
The posters of the return of godzilla and godzilla vs destroyah are my favrioute godzilla posters
Destoroyah vs Shin Godzilla would be an interesting fight.
I grew up watching the Heisei era of Godzilla, I love them. When I think of Godzilla, I think of this design, it is thee Godzilla in my opinion.
Thank you for putting the sources in your videos!
Having Godzilla be give a time limit at the beginning is such a cool and somber way to start the film, basically saying "one way or another, Godzilla will die"
the idea that someone can just walk off set with a BIG ASS KAIJU SUIT is insane to me!
This channel got my subscription this takes me back to my childhood in the 90s.
20:54 that Simon Says sample made me so happy
Awesome video this has always been one of my favorite not just Godzilla but overall movies. The scene when appears for the final battle still gives me goosebumps also and the death scene reminds me that there's something in my eye. I think it could have been more tear inducing if you played raymond bur's final speech from 1985 before junior's appearance at the end.
