I never thought I would almost cry watching a Godzilla movie. This movie was beautiful and horrifying
Likewise
I literally cried. I'm a 29 year old dude but everything these characters went through... it's a great story.
I had to wipe my eyes before leaving the theater.
A tear came to my eye when Godzilla whooped Kong because it finally settled an argument I’ve had since childhood 😂
Very good storytelling. This was some epic greek tragedy type writing. They also paid extra attention to the details of the characters and atmosphere of the settings.
there are two types of Godzilla movies. Godzilla solo movies where they tackle serious issues, and Godzilla Vs. movies where the focus is campy giant monster battles. I love both.
Awesome video Ryan. I absolutely loved it too. The human story was so beautifully done and it made me tear up a couple of times. I also loved the way they still really made Godzilla look like a guy in a suit as well while also giving him more movement when he's attacking a building or a ship. So happy Toho delivered to side of Godzilla.
I've been saying Shin was the better version of the original movie, and this was definitely better than shin.
Godzilla Minus One was a very good movie ❤❤❤❤❤
This was an amazing film, now we need a Godzilla vs Gamera movie. Finally
I'm from Germany and honestly i would have loved to watch this with subtitles we only get dubbed movies here most of the time and it's really hard to even see hollywood in their original version here because they dub everything.
こちら日本!
観に行って下さってありがとうございます!!
I found myself very attached to the little girl and the mechanic guy of all people. He was fantastic.
Awesome show.
Was just thinking how memorable the characters were, and how rare that is now. I liked "Doc" and the guy from the boat with the mustache.
Great movie! Go OUT and see this in the theater 💯
Dude I'd love to see you do one of your retrospectives on All the Godzilla movies!!
I dunno I definitely think Minus One's atomic breath tops Shin's rocket take off space laser breath lol. That first scene with the destroyer specifically captures the totality of the aftermath when it's used for me.
I saw Shin and I liked it, it was fine...but I just don't see how anyone can compare it with this Oscar-winner.
Except for Noriko in the hospital all bandaged up with not a bruise in sight...
That one was because she got mutated from the atomic breath after math… which left us a cliff hanger hopefully for another film
My husband is a huge Godzilla fan and wants to go see this movie for his birthday this weekend. I could take or leave (usually preferably leave) Godzilla but I am genuinely excited to go see this with him.
This is a film that I might never watch again because it hurts to watch. It is, ultimately, about many real things, that happened to many real people, and it concludes with calling us to make a better world in which none of that ever happens again.
That said, I do hope not every Godzilla movie hereafter is as heavy as this one. Godzilla can be many things, which is a strength of the character. This movie is a triumph, but more "fun", "this is how we live with the world of nuclear power, which Godzilla is," type stories would be a good breather between the important films about "war is awful and then Man made the most destructive technology imaginable", because this is a painful film
Oscar value...
I still have that Imperialism Godzilla toy, but a bigger version than that one. Though I also have the first Bandai one from 1983 that was made in all rubber, as well as a Bandai one from the same year based on 1964 Godzilla vs Mothra
I think Ryan would like to *BE* Godzilla, what do you guys think Ryan would do if he was Godzilla? Destroy the world? Just live out in the wilderness eating bears?
DUDE I have that same Godzilla figure in the opening of the video LMFAO I HAVE THAT
Monarch series? ... I was dragging myself through it and fell asleep Episode 4 and 5.
I love Godzilla minus one, and I absolutely hated shin Godzilla
Could someone explain to me what was so great about it
The subtitles were not always great, and I feel like the cheesiness of the dialogue might have been helped with a more subtle/careful translation.
Godzilla Minus One was not a "great Godzilla movie."
Godzilla Minus One was a GREAT movie that happened to have Godzilla in it!!
Had us in the first half not gonna lie.
You nailed it!
It's facts!
That was my take coming out of the theater
The human story is so good I almost dreaded Godzilla showing up and making things worse.
I never care about the human characters in a Godzilla movie but WOW did this film change that! Godzilla was offscreen for almost 30 minutes and I did not notice because I was so invested in the characters. So many tragic moments in the story that had me floored. The story, characters, acting, CGI, practical effects, music, pacing, and cinematography were all amazing! This isn't just a impeccable Godzilla movie. It is a masterpiece of a movie, period. 🎉🎉🎉
Masterpiece of a film, in all honesty should be nominated for Best Picture
This was the closest a movie has ever come to making me cry. It was an absolute masterpiece.
The trailer alone made me cry. I can't believe this is a thing. Will see it Thursday night.

Godzilla, in my opinion, represented PTSD of the Japanese people as a whole after their defeat during WW2... and, instead of relying on their government, the people rose up together to defeat Godzilla
Yes, but it is also relatable with our vets and others in survival. Abuse and toxic culture too. Great movie
Just saw it today with my wife - it's our first wedding anniversary - and we absolutely loved the movie! Koichi's struggle with PTSD is one of my favorite plot points of the movie. While my wife was concerned it might trigger me a bit, it was very cathartic how his breakdown with Noriko was and how he made the move from seeking redemption through death to choosing to live. It was a truly moving film and easily my favorite Godzilla movie of all time!
As a Vet, that subplot was very good!
@@barryrobinson1041 I'm not a vet - PTSD from child abuse and other things - but it was very relatable regarding how Koichi felt disconnected and was questioning whether he was really alive or not. The way he freaked out was very much what it can be like.
Happy anniversary!
Totally agree. PTSD and or survivor’s guilt was shown and not just told in the movie. Great movie and story telling
This actually links back to the original 1954 Godzilla movie.
In 1954, the War and the Atomic Bombs were very fresh in Japan's memory. The original was very dark and bittersweet. Godzilla, an allegory for nuclear weapons testing and war, appears and unstoppably wrecks everything and leaves.
However, the original 1954 Godzilla was extremely cathartic to the Japanese audience. Watching the movie allowed them to process the trauma and grief that had been under the surface. That's why the original Godzilla is so culturally important to Japan.
I watched Godzilla Minus One with my SO and we both loved it. It was so good.
Oh gosh, yes, the praise is not only coming from the audience and critics, but the box office is actually doing so well for this film! I can tell that this film is trying not to be over the top with its plot line and characters. Just having a film being done with the budget and directing it has really does determine how well it will go.
Agreed. I've just watched it for the third time, and hope to see it again before they pull it out of the theaters (supposedly in a few days' time). Best movie I've seen in years. Thank you, Toho!
I have watched every Godzilla movie, and been watching Godzilla all of my life. I am ready to call it. This is the best Godzilla movie ever made. The fact that I took my wife who has hated every single Godzilla movie I have dragged her to except for Godzilla vs Kong (only because she thought Kong was cute), and she loved it. I was blown away.
Epic!
I will say so also. I'm all about Kaiju. Give me monsters and destruction, but this had a very good well written human story where we also have to deal with The monster of monsters.
Neither me or my wife have ever been Godzilla fans; I heard a rave review so we watched the first half of the trailer and bought tickets.
Now we're making a Godzilla watchlist.
@@SkilletTRO dont watch any american movies
Godzilla Minus One was the best film of the year for me. I was actually terrified of Godzilla and his “atomic” breathe finally lives up to its name.
This movie was so good, you forget about the monster beause you've been so caught up in the characters, It was incredible
I have seen it twice in the theater. The early release with my wife who is not a Godzilla fan like me but she wanted to see this after I showed her trailer and then again on release day with my Godzilla friends. My wife thought it was a really good film despite being a Godzilla film. I think it's the best Godzilla film to date (yes even better than Shin). And it is by far the best film of 2023 so far.
I originally really liked Shin Godzilla. Then a movie essayist I deeply respect said he had a lot of issues with the film.
After thinking about it, I think he's right. Now, Shin Godzilla is a really great movie. It's well made and really uses Godzilla well and is a great portrayal and commentary of the failures of government.
The problem with Shin Godzilla is how pessimistic it is. Sometimes to a comedic level. Not to say what happened in the movie isn't realistic. In fact, some of the things are so funny BECAUSE it has happened in real life. The scene where a bunch of people in the board room finishes the meeting (and get nothing done), and then every single person enters the same other room for a slightly different meeting with the same exact people. That scene made me laugh out loud because I've been there. Weirdly cathartic to see it on screen.
But the problems with the movie sorta stems from Hideaki Anno (creator of Evangelion). He's a great director and he makes great movies. But his complete lack of faith in humanity and his fetish for military equipment is apparent in Shin Godzilla. The human characters in the movie also just kinda feel like parts of a machine. I think it's really interesting to see ineffective and effective bureaucracy in the form of a movie (and have it be actually really interesting). However, all the movie sorta leaves you is a general disdain for the machinery of humanity. The solution presented is to replace the old bureaucrats with the new and hopefully things are better? Something like that.
Godzilla Minus One is such a deeply human story. It's more in line with the original 1954 version where it explores the aftermath of war and of people trying to put their lives back together. I adore it very much.
shin godzilla is probably a more realistic approach to what would actually lhappen if godzilla just appeared, while minus one is a fleshed out story that expresses specific humanistic values. sometimes realism doesnt mean better@@azkon7975
@@azkon7975although i love shin godzilla and is arguably my favorite and i do have to agree with what you said with the characters in it, they don’t seem very human and all to move the plot forward as there is not really any story building with them, which i never truly noticed until seeing minus one and what they could do, watching minus one really gave me what I didn’t know was missing in shin Godzilla. For this reason i really see shin Godzilla dropping off from my favorite (despite him still being my favorite Godzilla to ever be put on the screen) the character building in this movie was just too good and impactful to leave it unnoticed
The praise for this movie is insane lol. Never been a godzilla guy but I'll have to check this out.
It would have been a good movie even if you took Godzilla out of it. Great characters with a good story.
I never liked any of these monster movies but loved this one. When to see it with my son for his sake, and I became a fan.
Did you like it?!
I disagree about the subtitles. The real problem is advertising and screens. It’s hard to compete with Hollywood here. Could you imagine a trailer played during an NFL game or even a college football game? My cinema didn’t even have a poster up! This is my favorite movie of the year and one of the best experiences I had in a theater in years. I have two young sons. They’re reading the subtitles. They weren’t upset about subtitles. It’s this incredible dramatic story done so eloquently on screen - especially with characters that you care about. Wow. What a movie!
I don’t recall a poster up at my cinema either. It’s a shame because there’s a lot of people out there that are going to miss out on a great movie.
I live in Australia and the only marketing I saw for this movie was here on RUclips with the official trailers. And those trailers slated the movie to only be a Japan and America theatre release.
I googled Minus One a few days ago to see what the consensus was on it and sure enough in my search I saw Minus One appear to have screenings at theatres in Australia (albeit very limited). I saw it just yesterday with family, including 2 children that had no issues at all watching a movie that had subtitles. But yeah, the issue was definitely marketing. There was literally no marketing for it in my home city in Aus, not even a poster. It was only by chance did I happen to realise there were screenings of it in my city.
And ofc the movie was great. Easily the best Godzilla flick for me in over a decade.
@@vicv3940 I guess that’s how you make a 15M$US movie. No marketing budget. I saw it on RUclips, that’s the only way I knew it was coming out.
The subs are short and easy to read quick basically... not complex dialogue which would totally disconnect American audiences. Sadly viewers with attention span of a nat will still probably diss it.
Look out, its GOJIRA!!!!

Wait a minute, the Godzilla Minus One budget was only 15million? We have Hollywood flops like Black Adam that cost nearly 200million? I'm sure actor the Rock alone cost 15 million filming that movie, that is down right criminal just thinking about it.
Hollywood is going to have to learn to make films more efficiently or the box office is going to die.
@@PV1230 Yeah, I want the people who work on these films to get paid well for their hard work and creativity but I think it would be best for films if directors had to do more with less. Because then you can’t just brush bad writing under the rug with tons of special effects scenes. As many people hate the Star Wars sequels now, just imagine. No one would watch those nonsensical pos if you only saw one lightsaber duel and space battle per film like it was in the OT. But the OT made so much more out of less action sequences because the story was compelling and when those lightsabers ignited, you felt excited and invested in the outcome.
It’s the best Godzilla film ever made in my opinion.
Some people are afraid to accept the truth, but it IS the best Godzilla movie, hands down. His atomic breath / nuclear explosion effect is just WOW.
First one is still the best, but this is easily 2nd place.
IM THERE WITH YOU!!!
@@ba2724 HIS ATOMIC BREATH HAD ME LIKE "WHOA"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOMENTS LIKE THAT MAKES YOU GLAD GODZILLA DOESNT EXIST.

What was so crazy is I saw this in the theater with my wife who is absolutely NOT INTERESTED in any of this. And with some time to reflect on the movie she was like “Ya know, that was a pretty good movie”.
Yeah I had to drag my Mrs along. She loved it.
took my teenage daughter to it when she's just mildly interested... she ended up crying and becoming the movies biggest fan, lol It helps that the leading young actors were hot too.
damn, time to go to the theatre
Big win for the Kaiju fandom! I saw it in DTLA in 4DX after Comic Con (missed promo opportunity- Gundam had a bigger presence than Godzilla this weekend). What a roller coaster ride! (physical and emotional). The crowd was loving it and after the 2nd atomic breath blast one dude yelled out "Rewind that sh1t!:" and the theater was like "hell yeah!"
I found GM1 to be a breath of fresh air from the usual Hollywood tropes. No rebellious teenagers, no marriage on the rocks, no quick-wealth schemes, no shadow corporate agendas-- just a simple story about people I grew to care about. America's been polarized for so long, that it's nice to see good people unifying to face adversity, even if for two hours. Let's see Hollywood make something more satisfying with just $15M. Go, go, Godzilla!
Feels like a love letter to the original yet is fresh, inventive, and a triumph of a film in its own right. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Well said
This isn't a love letter This is a proposal
Can we just all admit how Epic objects were hurled.
I took my plush Godzilla for the viewing
( he was hit with the people in the audience...Ha! ) along with my niece and her beau, and it was wonderful. This movie is simply different, it has this energy that's connecting with people. I Loved it.
One last thing, " It wasn't cool to be a fan of Godzilla. It just wasn’t. It was just a shameful thing. I’m not ashamed"
Director John Carpenter
Not one IMAX theater has it in the NY/NJ metropolitan area until Tuesday. Went to see it in a normal AMC screen. IT IS AMAZING. Godzilla is frightening. I never felt fright from any Godzilla. This one nailed it.
I saw it in the DFX theater and it was well done. A must-watch in the special theater, and it felt like you got to witness the event, not a movie. When it hits the physical media (meaning Bluray and 4K), it's nothing like an event but still, it's a masterpiece of a movie.
I live in Illinois but I went to Burlington Iowa to watch Godzilla Minus one and for me as long time childhood fan 36 now this movie was very emotional for me when the theme song was playing during the Ginza attack
Absolutely loved the film, jumped all the way to my #2 spot behind only the original 54 film. Basically everything I could want in a Godzilla film, and I’m so glad it’s catching on and word of mouth is spreading about it. Hope Toho really takes notice that here in America we don’t just care about Legendary Godzilla, but also Toho’s as well!
Liked it better than one since attacks were in broad daylight.
@@jamesfields2916true times changing and the advancement of cinema makes those daylight scenes even better. Gotta love the OG ones tho
They most certainly do considering they took a gamble on being the sole distributor globally rather than through another American production company.
First one has the cultural impact and got it all started. But I think this one is the Best Godzilla movie of all time due to checking all the boxes that the first one can't due to technical limitations. I also think the story and characters are more compelling.
The 3 top Godzilla movies are The Original, Godzilla minus one because the story line and the soundtrack that brings you back in time and Shin Godzilla. This is just my opinion. Godzilla Minus 1 rocks and he just looks so mean lol. Enjoy
I remember all the character's movie names mean a lot. In 2014, I can't name 1. Before that, it was Mathew Broderick 😂. But Shishinima and that cutie Akiko and Nariko. I've seen it twice in Imax. My war isn't over yet 😢
2014 had Bryan Cranston (who died real fast), Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
I just wanna say that this is the cutest Godzilla ever lol. His face looks like a doggo's face especially in that scene where he chases the small boat and I wanna pet him
🤣 Same. I want him as a gigantic pet. Great guard monster, all intruders will be vaporized with prejudice.
I thought his Heisei-ish face looked like a kitty. Still wanted to pet him!
I fear that might not go so well for you all. 😂
So glad Godzilla is getting more positive buzz that he rightly deserves! Go G-MAN!!!!!
Godzilla has always been my childhood hero
The movie was basically the highlight of December as well as likely the last movie I will see. The movie was by far up there in my top favorite Godzilla films . Definitely need to see it again
Iron claw, ,Ferrari, the boy and the heron will be worth your time this month too!
Saw it with my two buddies and we were the only ones in the theater but that's okay because we were yelling Holy shit and what the fuck when godzilla did anything awesome
"Godzilla: Minus One" gets a positive 10 out of 10 from me.
Saw it in IMAX and WOW! I would definitely see it again. This movie hit on the feel and anticipation. The acting from the humans was phenomenal.
This movie is perfect in IMAX! Such a great experience!
Well, I've watched it in Germany. There were about two or three dozen movie theatres that showed it at all, in the entire country.
Limited release, only two showings per theatre. I watched the second one and was heartbroken to find barely a third of seats filled.
Still a great film, some weird parts excluded.
I cant wait to see it tomorrow. On my day off.
Hell, i might catch a midnight viewing after work at this rate with the glowing reviews
I agree with the making him walk stiff opinion. It looks cool. When he shows faster movement it surprises you. This was a thrilling movie with a cast of humans I really cared about. I might like this movie a little bit more than Shin Gojra
Hang on, Shin Godzilla is only 11 in your godzilla movie ranking? You're not sure if Godzilla Minus One is in your top 10 godzilla movies? What the hell is going on here
I think he meant to say that Shin was so good that it broke into his top 10 movies in general, not just Godzilla. So now he might have to knock Shin out of the top 10 in order to squeeze Minus One in there or have 2 Godzilla movies in his top 10 knocking out some other classic movie (I don't know what other movies he has on there, so maybe The Thing, or Back to the Future?).
@GBDupree Okay that makes much more sense, both films are absolute top tier godzilla
True Godzilla fans don't compare the different Godzilla movies; we just enjoy them.
But what about All Monsters Attack?
This was probably my favourite Godzilla movie and one of the movies from 2023 that I enjoyed the most. Not only I felt like it did an excellent job in showing the impact of Godzilla's appearance in everyday people's life, but for once I was really invested in the human characters and concerned they may not make it. Great balance, and I feel it really captured and updated some of the magic of the original movie.
The fact that it only costed 15M $, while Hollywood with ten times the budget had done the equivalent of children smashing their monster toys, is also a testament of the fantastic job of the people involved in producing this movie.
This movie was incredible! I'm hoping to get to see it a second time. I'd love to see more Godzilla content including your top Godzilla movies! I actually have 2 lists which ones I think are the best Godzilla movies and which are my favorites. Right now (subject to change cause def riding the hype train) Minus 1 is 2nd on my best movies and 3rd on my favorites both times it's right behind the original 54 and my favorite Godzilla movie is the original Godzilla vs Mecha-Godzilla.
As for the movie itself, yes they actually wrote a complete good movie and didn't just phone in the human drama thinking "We'll just rely on the special effects to carry the movie!" Also Hollywood needs to take note cause this movie was made for $15M and looks better in a lot of sequences than some of these $200M+ movies. The scenes with Godzilla were awe inspiring, whether it be the tiny bit you get at the start or the Jaws like sequence they've shown in the trailers. Idk what it is but I LOVE getting to see Godzilla in the water, it's like an integral part of the character that we almost never get to see him in there so it was super cool to see that more. Additionally I loved that they took him back to his horror roots, that's two of my fave IPs that have gone back to their horror roots in recent years (Incredible Hulk being the other) for smashing success!
Main character fails his kamikaze mission.
Godzilla shows up.
Main character fails to shoot godzilla.
Godzilla shows up again bigger.
Main character fails to tie the knot with his loved one
Godzilla kills her snd everyone around her.
Only when the main characyer steps up and faces his "war" and accepts help from his new friends that godzilla finally falls. For now.
The movie is a masterpiece. Not just one of the best movies of the year but one of the best movies of the last decade
I have that same toy and had it so long I have no idea where my family got it 😂😂😂
I had the same problem. I bought my tickets for a Dec. 1 screening two weeks in advance because the only theater playing it was about 45 minutes away. And, now the theater 3 miles from my house is playing it. I wasn’t planning on watching it in theaters again because of the distance but now I will be seeing it again tomorrow!
What an intro 😂
I went in completely blind and had my expectations completely flipped! Oscar worthy movie.
I cant wait for James Rolfe (Avon, angry video game nerd) to review it. It also goes to show that it’s not about budget, it’s about presentation, acting and story telling. Something Hollywood forgot all about. Good review man
Phenomenal film. Ready for a round 2
Saw it in 4dx it was awesome!
Let's go! I can't wait to see this movie
If it was just a film without Godzilla about the characters struggling to piece their lives together after the war, it still would have been compelling.
Godzilla Minus One was not made by hollyweird weird , so of course it will be a hit!
Spoilers!!!!!!!!!!.......
I cried multiple times but especially after shisuma screamed with everything he had when Godzilla destroyed the city and had destroyed the city
This is way better then any of monster verse stuff hands downs; my wife who I had to drag to the theaters is now telling her friends to go see this lol.
Just watched it in theaters it was really good
IM STANDING ON THIS!!! THE BEST GODZILLA MOVIE TO DATE-TERRIFIC!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw this yesterday and I'm still hyped up. Minus One is my new favorite Kaiju movie.
The first Godzilla movie to ever make me cry actual tears while watching it!!!
It was dope
Damn. Not the biggest of Godzilla but Just booked imax tickets with everyone saying it being amazing. Really hyped. Thx for the review 👍
Can’t wait to see it on Wednesday
I may go see it again !
Did you see Love and Monsters? Looks amazing and cost $25 million
Just saw it today & loved it. Meanwhile the new Legendary Godzilla trailer dropped today to reveal the Godzilla is now pink. He's pink. Hollywood is dead. Good riddance.
I just got home from seeing it, it was awesome! Even my mom liked it, and she never watches subtitles
As you said just that hahaha
They know people here are starving for decent content to look at.
I’m just loving all the godzilla stuff we’ve been getting no matter what it is. And loving that toho is continuing their stuff as well
My only issue with the movie was Godzilla wasn’t in it that much
I hope Hollywood doesn't hop on the band wagon to miss up the monster verse. By over producing horrible movies
Man, I haven't been this excited for MORE GODZILLA since TNT's Godzilla Marathons! ❤
Pretty causal Godzilla fan, still need to see the movie just glad the videos doing well.
It's a wide release, but it's only getting a one week showing in most areas.
Simply the best Godzilla movie ever
Left me speechless! So many emotions. An instant classic!!
The fact that Toho made this film for under 15 million dollars is staggering.
WTF is Disney doing dumping 4 to 5 hundred million dollars down the shi**er on movies that suck skyscrapers?
I've been a fan since 1969 when I first saw "Mothra vs Godzilla." Then named "Godzilla vs The Thing." And for me I got teary eyed when I saw the Toho logo that big on the screen. So for me this film was epic in terms of everything. This Kaiju loving heart was overwhelmed by the film and by the mastery of the acting, directing, story....everything.
Please go see and support this movie while you can! Show the studios we want REAL stories and good writing!
I saw it yesterday, very good. And its run in the US has been extended!
Its an excellent movie. Period. I'm telling everyone to see it.
I saw it in the early 4DX release (which was less distracting than I expected). This is probably just initial hype but it cleared my top 5 easy. This may change but off the bat'd I go:
1. Gojira
2. Minus One
3. Shin Godzilla
4. vs. Destroyah
5. vs. Hedorah
Going to watch it again in standard sometime this week to see if that affects my opinion. I won't talk about the film too much to avoid spoilers for others but I really loved that despite being horrific and and depressing most of the time its main theme was affirmation of life and striving to go forward. It was just the right film for me to see currently, definitely needed that boost.
Your intro was everything 😂😂😂
Just saw this movie and loved it!!
