Yeah, pretty much like OG Godzilla. Just a massive ferocious force of nature that strolled up to shore and drop dick on everyone with extreme prejudice. Having an antagonist like that was a breath of fresh air.
I love cosmic horror stories about creatures beyond our comprehension not even noticing us as they wreck the world, but there's just something about the sheer *hatred* in Goji's eyes in this movie that chills me to the bone. He **does** see you, he **does** know you're afraid, and he wants your head on a fuckin' spike.
"Why is he bein' so shitty?"... this is a SPOILERY answer, so look away if you have not seen the movie: When we first see him in his original form on the island, he's being animal/territorial... but when the 'rex' version is irradiated by the US nuke test at Bikini Atoll, that's when he really starts growing, mutating, and getting really pissed off. I thought that his "scales" actually looked more like volcanic lava, particularly when he would regenerate. He's probably in constant pain, melting from the inside from all that nuclear energy while his body boils, regenerates, and mutates around that energy.. and is PISSED at the humans who did this to him. Also, I recently learned the movie title "Minus One" is because the filmmakers said that Japan is already "at zero" after WWII and the arrival of Godzilla takes them to "minus one". Amazing film!!
Just saw the movie and can easily say this was the best Godzilla film by far. One issue that the movie fixes which has been a problem in the franchise for quite sometime now is that it actually blends good monster action with human characters that are not just likeable but characters we care about. Easily number one favorite movie of the year for me
I think this will end up as the best Godzilla film. The one from 1954 is probably the 2nd GOAT. I try getting into Godzilla movies but I never could. He always had me intrigued as a kid. But a lot of his movies are similar to Bond movies. They don't really click with me. It's very niche and I guess I'm not into kaiju. I was thinking about getting this Godzilla Hiya toy that's like $50. It's a revision of the GvK one from 2021 but they corrected his neck. But a part of me really doesn't like the Legendary design. He looks like a stegosaurus standing up. He has a more reptilian head while I prefer his rounder head from Toho over the flat head, flat nose one, and a very short neck. I keep waiting for it to grow on me and it never does. And I recently rewatched Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and it's not a good movie at all as Chris from Film Stocked has said. The story and logic are stupid which is how a lot of Godzilla movies are. Many kung fu films are the same way. The first Godzilla I've ever seen was King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) back when I was 7 in '87-88. I'll probably save the $50 and wait for Hiya to make one for Minus One. I prefer his head more and his largest dorsal plates looks like shurikens. I do not mind his size being smaller. Minus One is closer to the size of the 1954 one at around 164 feet (50 meters) or so. While Legendary is closer to 400 feet, the largest Godzilla at the time of release in 2014 before Shin Godzilla. I prefer Godzilla to be slimmer and the shape of the head to be rounder. I don't like Legendary Godzilla's roar. It's not as iconic as Toho's. It loses that punch. I already lost interest in finishing Monarch. Like should I really care about these human characters? I only care to watch Godzilla destroy shit or other titans. I don't really watch it for emo people with broken lives. But I hear Minus One has human characters I'll care about. I don't like how Legendary designed Kong. He's too brown when I want him black like Mighty Joe Young. I want the Peter Jackson Kong or the one from 1976. The Legendary designs are questionable for me. Some like it but it's not for me. Legendary design is still way better than Godzilla 1998 but I feel it could still be much better. Godzilla Minus One is really a modern remake of the 1954 film. It's paying more homage to that film from 69 years ago. Going back to the roots but with a modern look and not some guy in a rubber suit. I doubt Minus One will ever get me into Godzilla or anything kaiju but at least when I see it, what I'm watching is a good film. Ranking all the Godzilla films I've seen - 1. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) 2. Godzilla (2014) 3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) 4. King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) 5. Godzilla (1998) Never seen all of Godzilla 1954 but it seems like a classic film. GvK is not as good as Godzilla 2014 but I prefer it more because I'm also a fan of King Kong and Mechagodzilla. People say the 2014 film is the best American Godzilla film and I wouldn't argue with that. And I was initially disappointed by it but came to like it more after a couple more rewatches at home. Minus One should easily be my #1 after I see it. The bar for Godzilla / kaiju niche films isn't very high. Most Godzilla films are basically 80% following human characters, hilarious English dubbing on Japanese actors, and then watching actors in rubber suits fighting or stomping on miniature sets. They're generally disaster films. That's the gist of Godzilla films. That and Godzilla helps sells toys for boys like Hello Kitty does for girls.
Oooh, even better than Shin Godzilla, which I really loved?! Alas, it's not showing in the UK until the15th of December. I love the original Godzilla movie the most, so more of that vibe sounds good. I do kind of wish this was set just a few years later into the mid-50s though., though I guess that would involve more of an American military presence.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the theater was about 75% full during my showing. The Godzilla fandom isn’t the most vocal bunch compared to the fandoms of other franchises but there’s a lot of us out there and I think that’s great.
Same experience here, and I agree with you regarding the fan base. I remember how incredibly excited I was for the 2014 Godzilla, saw it and loved it, and was surprised when literally nobody I knew saw it or seemed to care. I figured it was over right there, but apparently there’s enough of us out here to justify 4 other Monsterverse movies and a new Toho Godzilla in the US 👍
Me too. I was only in it three weeks after it started, and it also 3/4 full still. People really love seeing a good movie after all. Ill probably see it again next week.
One of the best movies I've seen this year. I actually really cared for the human characters and damn this was a tear-jerker. When the protagonist took off to redeem himself I got little teary eyed ngl.
Facts...he laid down that packet n in my mind I said noooo nooo don't leave her....her birth parents died and Niko died and now you. Don't leave Akiko 😢..
It's 5 out 10 max. If people were being honest instead of trying to be trendy everybody would be talking about how ridiculous it is nobody is speaking American. I'm not sure if this was made in foreign to save money or the film makers jumped on the same train as Netflix and tried to make it 'cool' and different by making it foreign. To me I found it very distracting and made it very hard to follow, I've got no idea if Godzilla time traveled, if he was angry because everybody was chatting gibber gabber, or how this fits in with the other movies in the franchise. I also think is a bit cheap to show the orange monkey in ALL the trailers only to find out the orange monkey isn't even in this one! I just don't get it!
This is a movie about PTSD, Antiwar, family, life and Forgiveness. It's the entire package, Godzilla is just the driving force in this movie that represents the MCs regrets and the last remnant of war.
@@npcimknot958 It’s not a plot hole. It’s just something that isn’t really explained. One character speculates that Godzilla is territorial. That’s all that needs to be said. This movie was refreshing precisely because it didn’t spend time on any of the mythology like so many other movies do these days. It’s about the characters and a lot of the tension comes from them not knowing WTF Godzilla is.
@@npcimknot958that's not a plot hole. Nobody knows for certain why he showed up, all they know is they have to deal with him. Was it territorial? Did the atom bombs wake him up? Who knows? But it was a conscious choice on the filmmakers part to not give an explanation. Not knowing is where a lot of the terror comes from - because it could happen again.
@beastialmoon2327 They did show footage of the bomb testing that had awoken him and made him bigger. It's already been established in most films that godzilla is an allegory for humans curiosity of playing god. Even in the 1954 film he didn't have a reason to attack why would he's a force of nature in this narrative that's paying homage to original film while telling a different story and keeping some core elements of Godzilla.
It’s interesting this came out the same year as Oppenheimer, which did not depict the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki or anything from the Japan perspective. This film actually depicts that kind of destruction, even in a monster movie setting.
I love Oppenheimer, but dammit. Now I can’t help but imagine Oppenheimer saying, “Yeah, but if we show Japan’s side, we won’t be taken seriously. We can’t make Godzilla practically”. 😂
This comment. I was thinking about the same. Plus I'm not a fan of Oppenheimer, I don't think it's Nolan's best AT ALL. I was actually bored and irritated by the simplostic view he chose. Now Godzilla dorw not shy away from showing terror and heartbrreak and the moral issue and all that through a symbolic creature. Minus one is a far better movie, more layered more thought provoking than Oppenheimer.
That's what the purpose of the original Godzilla from 1954 was as well. Wouldn't say this was a remake, but it did what no other Godzilla movie could which was properly take us back to the true roots of the franchise and in some senses even do it better.
Now this is the modern Godzilla movie I’ve been waiting for, where Godzilla is basically a slasher villain and a force of nature. I’m excited to see it this weekend.
I've been waiting for this movie since 2014! This is what I was hoping for when the 2014 godzilla came to town. I liked that movie but they could have done so much more with it, but this movie is just a damn good movie. Period
That's not how it works dude. Entertaining industry budget depends upon their popularity. Hollywood movies plays almost all around the world whereas other countries movie industry have limited release. I agree there are many Hollywood blockbuster that doesn't justifies it's budget. Godzilla minus one budget looks inexpensive but for Japan,it's one of the most expensive movie ever made.
For those who doesn't familiar with how Toho handle this franchise, they rarely treat the movies as a continuation, so one movie could be disconnected with the other one, and sometimes they made different origin for Godzilla
Kinda miss the connectivity the Heisei films had but at the same time ones having their own origin like the Millennium and Reiwa ones can get creative with their interpretations.
Man... i need this one to ATLEAST have a sequel. This time, with a higher budget. Something that rivals monsterverse' budget but habdled to PERFECTION. Like with what they did in this film.
Correct - of the 38 Godzilla movies, there are 12 distinct, separate continuities/reboots. Most of these reboots shoo everything except the very first 1954 Godzilla film away, though some (like this one, Shin, GMK and the American reboots) reboot completely leaving even the '54 version out.
@@roboguy75i think its cause since the US are doing the more connectivity Godzilla movies, Toho decided not to do that and do more individual movies like shin and Minus One
Godzilla being an outright force of evil is something I don't think most of us outside of Japan are quite able to grasp. And there is a reason for that because Japan went through a lot and those experiences informed the creation of the character. The international image of the character is so at odds with what the character fundamentally is. and says a lot about why Hollywood will forever struggle with getting it right.
This isn't even the most evil Godzilla either. I think GMK still holds that crown. That version of Godzilla would blow up innocent people with an honest to God smile on his face.
He has been evil before....Unless people are watching the garbage trash dubbed versions of the movies. Shin was evil, 90% of the millennium era he was evil, half of the Heisei era he hated humanity. The only time he was really "good" were those awful Showa era movies made for children, have a couple of kennys, does things like dance and fly from the 70s. Some of them there is a huge difference between the subbed and the god awful dubbed US versions....

This movie should AT LEAST get a nomination for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars! I'm not saying it would win it.. I haven't seen many foreign movies this year.. but this was a damn good movie. Better than Shin Godzilla which won Best Picture at the Japanese Academy Awards!
Just watched this one and man this has topped Shin Godzilla for me as the best Godzilla film. He was terrifying and the humans was relatable. This film was full of dread and terror.
Same, Shin was my favorite after the 54 original, and Minus One beat it. Those are the trifecta of amazing Godzilla movies to me. I'd be so happy if Minus One gets one or two sequels, it is open for that, as well as the director and actors stated.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who was like “this Godzilla is a massive fuckin prick” It’s great that he is and makes him a solid villain but I’m glad someone else sees it.
In most movies where he's the antagonist he's just a pissed off, confused animal whose mere existence is a consequence of mankind's hubris, but in this one he was deliberately going after people and being as destructive as possible. Mothfucker loved punting shut down the street just to see how far it would go.
that scene that pans up behind Godzilla toward the top of the atom bomb cloud was almost haunting - as if he just summoned satan and then began worshipping it with his scream. it was an absolutely unnecessary taunt to show anyone who survived what he just did - and that famous japanese scream we see in so many japanese actors came out full force when shikishima realizes he just lost his wife and city. it was beautifully shot tbh, and the biggest slap in the face you could give someone trying to get his life back together.
I watched this last night in a packed theater. The audience loved it and clapped at the end This movie was amazing. I loved how it explored post war Japan. I’m a life long Godzilla fan and this was the first time I was genuinely scared of Godzilla. The movie made you care about the human characters and you don’t want to see them die. This in many ways sets out a new standard for Kaiju flicks This is easily the most vicious Godzilla yet. This movie really makes you feel absolutely powerless when Godzilla shows up. That nuke really pissed him. He’s the horror of war incarcerate. Nothing but a Monster. This will easily go down as one of the best Godzilla movies yet
Nah, you're lying. You're just going along with the hype train. The older films had more charm to them. This is just a CGI Theme park ride. Matter fact, revoke your fan card right now, casual. I'm investing more time in other franchises since Godzilla is now catering to filthy casuals who never cared for the franchise.
The reason Godzilla is so aggressive is because he's smaller than before. When he was huge, humans were ants. No one likes an ant infestation but we will clean it out impersonally without much thought. Now that he's smaller, we're more like rats to him and we all know how we would feel about a rat infestation in our house.
Godzilla Minus One, Monarch tv series, tons of short movies on Toho’s YT channel and the Justice League crossover comic. It’s been a good year for us Godzilla fans.
Another film is coming out next year with Godzilla too. It's a Kong sequel where Kong and Godzilla seem to team up against another Kong type giant ape.
You got some fake fans trying to stir controversy between the monsterverse and Japanese films , when we all are eating good from the variety of content
I saw it tonight and I was in tears! Like holy shit! Godzilla Minus One is literally a masterpiece! I’m not even a Godzilla fan like that! I just saw the Monsterverse movies and this one, but Godzilla Minus One is definitely my favorite! It was so good! I was immersed in this movie! And during the final battle, my heart was racing and my body was shaking! That’s how into it I was! 10/10 movie!
It has plotholes but the movie is so so good you dont care. Give me this kind of characters and ARCs and high stakes and we wont even notice the plotholes.
To point out why Godzilla is angry is because he was hit with an atomic bomb. That's usually been Godzilla big beff with humans in the ToHo movies. With this version it's the same thing plus just leave him alone. He don't wanna hear no noise, he doesn't want to see no people. 18:03 no Martin the Godzilla from the Monsterverse is not the same Godzilla we see in this movie. The Monsterverse established that he was found in 1954. Minus one Goji attacked Japan in 1947 And monarch was never a thing in this movie. Toho likes to reboot Godzilla a lot. 1984 to 1995 Heisei era 2000 millennium Godzilla vs Megagirus Gmk Kiryu saga Final wars Shin Godzilla All reboots with little to no connection to any movie aside from the original 1954 movie or flat out ignored in general. Shin Godzilla and minus one goes for the ignoring 1954 movie and starting fresh. 22:30 that was intentional. Takashi Yamazaki (the director) intentionally gave us a jaws moment but with Godzilla. 31:25 yes it's CGI
Almost none of what you list is "rebooted'. Most of them are ALL sequels to the original 54 movie but few of them are direct sequels to each other. Godzilla 1984 is a direct sequel to 54, Biolante is a direct sequel to 84. 2000 is a sequel to 54, GxMG and Tokyo SOS are direct sequels. People seem to have trouble with "cannon" ALL of them except for Shin Godzilla are direct sequels to the 54 film, very few of them are sequels to each other. They're mostly treated as stand alone films but tied to the 54 film.
Is Godzilla created by the bomb or he already existed and the bomb mutated it or annoyed it? Casual viewer, not a massive fan. So, I’m not super familiar except from casual comments.
@@Godzilla-tu2cd Nope! MinusGoji was already attacking the Japanese in Odo Island in July 1945. It was before being hit with the Crossroads nuclear detonations at Bikini Atoll in 1946.
Really wish Korey would redo this review with Martin and maybe even everyone else just so they could all talk about it in length and not tip-toe around spoilers. Fantastic Godzilla though, probably the best one I’ve seen. The human characters weren’t just background for Godzilla. I was caught off guard by how much cared for them. When you first see Godzilla you realize it’s young and it looks like a dinosaur because it happens on a random island but then when you see him attack Ginza or even the ships on the water you are so excited to see what he’s become. The VFX on Godzilla is shockingly good. I think when Korey mentioned that he looked robotic was I think the studio trying to emphasize that Godzilla is a force of destruction and doesn’t need to nimble all the time when just walking around. It definitely seems more nimble when he is attacking anything. Best movie I’ve seen this year; I will definitely see it a few more times too.
31:05 I think what they were conveying or at least trying to is the realism of him walking through water and the water creating drag on his movements. So in that scene for me it makes sense that he would be moving like that coming out of water compared to land.
You're 100% right and it was actually strange how he couldn't get that part and thought it might be some mechanical issue. It was CGI so of course it was done intentionally and to convey the movements to the audience
This was the first time I ever watched a Godzilla movie and found myself rooting for the humans. They made him a literal monster in this.. and it was GREAT. He's just angry and aggressive. The original is still the best Godzilla movie in my opinion.. but this movie is a very close second! Better than Shin-Godzilla.. Better than GMK.. Better than any of the Monsterverse movies. I would love for them to continue this universe.. and keep them period pieces set in the past. Work their way up to present day.. and, of course, add in their other Kaiju along the way.
The humans in the American movies are usually likeable enough but yeah, thats not usually the case in the Japanese mopvies. Although the dude who was in a few of the Heisei movies was pretty likeable.
17:26 Don't forget that the -1 Godzilla is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than the monsterverse Godzilla. He's only about a third as big. It makes sense that he'd be much more agile and quicker.
It's not only the best Godzilla I've ever see, it is honestly one of the best films ever made to me. I can't recall a film in recent history where I cared for the characters this much. I pretty much loved every featured character in it, and was praying they wouldn't die. What a masterpiece. A big monster movie that is also genuinely one of the greatest human dramas. Absolutely astounding.
Minus One not only takes elements of some of the best Godzilla films (54, 84, 2000, GMK, Shin) but even resurrects overlooked, promising aspects brought up in other films in the franchise (Godzilla Raids Again, Vs King Ghidorah) and not only improves on them but even SHOWS us things that were only ever implied or just explained through exposition in the past. Heck it even one-ups the Jurassic Park movies of recent years at one point and it took me by surprise how well done it was. The human characters are shockingly good too, probably the best ones we’ve had in a very long time, and setting it in the 40s post-WW2 worked to their benefit, and I liked how it brought attention to a lot of the guys that were chewed up and spat out by the Japanese war machine (the allegory works very well due to being nuanced and the movie does not feel like a petulant lecture because of it). I hope Yamazaki gets his wish and we get another film from him, preferably a sequel because Minus One deserves it, and I’m tired of Toho doing just one-offs like they have done these past 10 years.
I saw it in DTLA tonight after LA Comic Con in a 4DX theater- quite literally a roller coaster ride! The seats moving along with the boats in the rough seas and vibrating with the explosions took it to the next level. My mom survived the WWII bombardment in Japan so that aspect hit pretty hard.
George Takei ( the guy who played Sulu on the original Star Trek series )was in the Japanese internment camps as a child during the war, here in america. Heard him say in an interview he felt betrayed by the US for this treatment of it's Japanese citizens. The US also had these camps for Italians too.
31:14 I’ve heard a few commentators talk about Godzilla’s walk looking funny in this movie and the director said something (I can’t remember where) that might explain that: we all know Godzilla is a metaphor for atomic destruction but in this movie, he’s also a metaphor of the soldiers that fought in that time. That stiff posture with his arms locked at his sides. We’ve seen that posture before when survivors walk away from an explosion completely shell-shocked. Godzilla has that same zombie-like gait. I might be reaching but it’s an interesting take that he’s embodying both aspects of the WWII soldier: the aggressor and the survivor.
Youre right about this g being a menace. The first attack he didnt eat anybody, just left those bodies to rot. Reminds me of my old dog who would want to pick fights with other dogs and killed rodents but left them there without any tears.
They basically just gave Godzilla the temperament of a slasher villain and I love it. Normally, Godzilla is generally reactionary. If things attack him he attacks back, and he knocks over buildings either by accident, during a fight, or because something pissed him off. This Godzilla woke up and said "I'm gonna murder the very next thing I see and just keep going from there" and proceeded to do exactly that before humanity even touched him. All the nuke did was worsen his anger problem, make him bigger, and give him superpowers.
These Best Godzilla Film ever made. AND… They made his Atomic Breath actually ATOMIC!!! Best Human Element but then again Japanese usually have better Human Elements than the American versions. This and Shin had great Human Elements. Also I love the way he walks in this film. He’s literally One Step and a Time. Usually he kind of walks like a Human or a steady pace. Here he Steps, then Stops, then Steps again. Very different I just needed to point that out after 33 Films in ToHo’s library!
Some people say that Godzilla's movements seem slow and stiff, but this is probably because they were conscious of the movements of the 1954 original. It is inspired by the movement of the Japanese classical performing art "Noh". Japan's Godzilla is an angry god of destruction, and a cursed god imbued with the grudges of the soldiers who died in World War II. It is like a mystical and sacred dragon, and the way it walks is like some kind of ritual. From a Japanese perspective, Godzilla is more than just a giant lizard. The target of Atomic Breath is not clearly stated, but it is probably the National Diet Building that Godzilla attacked in the 1954 original (when it was released in 1954, audiences in Japan cheered and applauded). I think.
You do realize that 99.9% of all the toho movies are 90% human character story and 10% Godzilla right? It will never not be hilarious when people act like its all the Legendary movies do, but the "Toho" movies don't...The Toho movies are mostly 80 minutes human drama, 5 minutes Godzilla travelling, 5-10 minute Monster fight.
@@lutherheggs451 Yeah but when some people complained about the weak characters in Godzilla King of Monsters and Godzilla vs Kong, other people were like "What do you expect it's a Godzilla movie"
The psychic shock to the Japanese people of losing the war is translated in a physical manifestation. Gojira is the destruction that was hidden from most Japanese during the war.
I’ve been a Godzilla fan for 40 years and this was the first time I had ever gotten to see a Japanese TOHO made Godzilla movie in the theaters. I think it’s only the third one in my lifetime that has been shown in America and I was born in 1980. I don’t know if it’s my favorite Godzilla movie I have to sit with it for a while because I have some nostalgia for some of the classics but this one hands-down is by far the best Godzilla movie ever made. It is the first Godzilla movie to actually make me care about the human characters and their storyline. 30 minutes into the movie I was so into the characters in this movie I forgot it was a Godzilla movie and I just wanted them to make it. That’s the other thing that’s weird I love the monster versus movies with Godzilla and King Kong but those movies are fun popcorn, movies, and when the monsters aren’t on screen, you really don’t give a shit about any of the characters. So you want the monsters on screen all the time in the monsters. I love those movies, but this is the first Godzilla movie that figured out how to make just a great movie And a great Godzilla movie at the same time. When Godzilla wasn’t on screen, I was very into the human characters.
Loved this movie my only complaint is some of the godzilla cgi looked off but when you consider the budget and that one guy did the fx it puts Hollywood to shame. My pie in the sky never gonna happen prayer is a someone throws money at this movie if it does well and keeps improving the cgi
"Avengers: Endgame"-$356-400 million. "The Flash"--$200-220 million. This film--15 million. FIFTEEN MILLION. How on earth did they turn out something this incredible for Fifteen Million Dollars? It's not piles of money, Hollywood. It's people who care about the quality of the result. And are willing to spend the time and work and energy to tell a human story with solid characters, with some of the most incredible effects I've seen in years. The King is back!
Well said and many who legitimately cover the industry are pointing to not only do you have a seriously good movie, made for a very reasonable budget, but it is actually profitable. This film checks the boxes that matter for both audiences and studios it's a win win but so much of Hollywood is filled with people who can't get out of the way and let someone cook.
Aw man !!! Have to go see this. Godzilla never really scared me either until him and Kong went at it. He went primal af on kong. That was the first time I was like damn godzilla. In most movies he does have an objective. Seeing the trailer for this one and the reviews for it. I can't wait to see it!!
Watch it with an audience. It was great when almost the entire theater gasped, went "awww" with the toddler and applauded when somethung hapoebed to shikisima
It was pretty predictable, but the actors really put their heart into it. The performances caused me to tear up a couple times. I think overall I preferred Shin Godzilla, but this was pretty great for what it was. I'm sure there was a lot of CG, but everything felt like it was practical.
@@edfa3706not really, but when they don’t show a dead body and they assume she’s dead and they start doing a clean up of the area you already know they are going to find her amid bring her back. That’s probably the predictable part because I don’t think they wanted the pilot to die either.
@@djthebigkor-ian8074 the writes of this movie literally just copied Nolan’s Batman’s ending with the ejection of the plane. The worst scene was the news reporters on the rooftop next to Godzilla
Best Godzilla ever. It took me back to the old Japanese ones from my youth. I cared about the people. Dude was just evil for waking up in the morning. Great movie.
I'm honestly surprised that this wasn't rated higher here. I mean I wasn't expecting a Better than Sex here, but a Matinee? I would've at least expected a Low Full Price for this. But hey it's good to know that this was looking to be much better than I expected it to be even from the trailers here.
If the movie had black characters in it, he probably would have given it a "better than s*x rating 😖🙄 Corey never really been a fan of Asian cinema no matter how good the movie is. He's a pretty biased reviewer if you've been watching him over the years like I have lol
This movie had actual good CGI and good human characters. Definitely the best Godzilla movie since the 1954. This and 2005 king Kong best modern monster movies.
"not a scratch"????? SPOILER ALERT!!!!! . . . . they literally blew a hole open in his cheek.. and you see it healing in seconds. I like the little touch of all the recently healed wounds are glowing like embers... He does get scratched. But it just pisses him off more.
Godzilla makes sense. Imagine having an ant hill in your backyard that you know about but don't pay much attention to. One night you wake up because a couple ants somehow got into your bed and but the shit out of your ankles, what's the first thing you're doing the following day?
This had a great human story and has one of the most devastating Godzillas on screen. I hope this gets an expanded run because more people should see this film. It has a lot of heart, and when Godzilla shows up on screen, he is destructive! This may end up as one of my favorite films of the year.
I did the 4XD for the first time watching this move. It kicked ass! It's definably one of my top favorite G movies. Also pay reaaaall close attention to the ending..... trust me...
Finally saw it. Perfect film. My 13 yr old loved it as well. It made me sad afterwards thinking about the fact that people no longer are interested in going to the theater. One of my favorite theater experiences of my life
I like how in 2016's Shin Godzilla, he was scary in a Jason Vorhees kind of way (deformed, unflinching & expressionless), while here he's more like that of someone with anger issues taking a massive dose of crystal meth. (In many ways, feels like GMK by way of original Gojira)
Never underestimate the power and strength of Toho, they brought Godzilla into this world way back in the day. I prefer my Godzilla the heroic savior, but seeing him as a destructive evil asshole is a nice change up.
So glad I came across your channel! Y’all are a whole mess 😂. Comparing this atomic Godzilla to Snoop in Baby Boy had me ROLLING!!! 😂😂😂. This was my first Godzilla movie and I LOVED it. Now I want to watch more but I think seeing this one first might fuck up the rest of them for me 😂. Definitely on my Best of 2023 list.
To be honest, first of all, this Godzilla has a particularly strong Japanese flavor. So I was worried whether my brothers overseas would understand me deeply. It is said that the Shinden that fought Godzilla was a romantic piece created solely to defeat the B29, said to be the devil who launched air strikes on Tokyo and the metropolitan area and dropped the atomic bomb, and that after Godzilla's atomic breast attack in Ginza. The horror of the black rain, etc. However, as a Japanese Godzilla fan, I would be happy if even a little bit of what the first generation wanted to convey across countries and eras was conveyed and people enjoyed it.
Right at the start, I feel like you're meant to assume he was disturbed by the bombing. Also this is pretty well known with this movie but for a 15 to 20 million dollar budget, this is incredible
I saw this on IMAX, and absolutely loved it. When he first appears in a city on screen, they play some old school Godzilla music, and i had a huge grin. If this guy gets a chance to write, direct and head up VFX for another Godzilla, i will be at the imax with money in hand waiting for it,
That was the oh s@#$ moment for me I was like my man Godzilla pulling a page out of DBZ right there. Then the films end I said oh man that's a Majin Buu level of regeneration humanity is well and truly done because even today we can crack a planet which means you aren't putting this Godzilla down.

I just finished watching 👀 it with my kids. This movie was on point, and it didn't feel like it was two hours long. I believe this is a remake from the 50s because of the setting and the way to defeat him.

Can understand the rating Korey gave it after talking it up so much. Even though it's one of the best Godzilla movies out there, something about didn't fully land with me. Still back and forth between liking this, or Shin Godzilla more for different reasons.
Gotta say I stumbled across this podcast about 6 months ago and watch u guys religiously now especially bad movie reviews which mk me cry with laughter. Much love from Coventry,England which is Clive Owen Territory lol
Best Godzilla film ever. this one was just mean and terrifying But if I recall correctly, the "current Godzilla" -in The Hollywood one, is actually Minilla (Or at least another Titanus Gojira juvenile) - I think Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will give more lore to this.
I've seen G-1 3 times in theaters and every time I've watched it I felt the emotions and the terror and connected with that hopelessness caused by Big G...it's no wonder the movie's won a few awards (including a Las Vegas award...fuck yeah my homecity shies tue big guy some love!)
“Please Godzilla, we just finished rebuilding our destroyed city and starting to maybe get our lives back on track” Godzilla: behold all the fucks I give 14:23
Seen this movie as well, I am even a huge fan of Godzilla, BUT this version of him had me want him to be destroyed. He was a Menace and Terror. He was actually targeting people. Example: When Godzilla first walked into the city, He roared at the people in that city. By far the very best Godzilla Movie hands down. Toho knows their product and creation far better than anyone.
This movie really answers the question: "What if instead of not giving a shit about you, Godzilla really, really, REALLY wants you dead?"
so like the og Godzilla
Yeah, pretty much like OG Godzilla.
Just a massive ferocious force of nature that strolled up to shore and drop dick on everyone with extreme prejudice.
Having an antagonist like that was a breath of fresh air.
This is the most vicious and evil Godzi ever was. Never have I wanted him to just be stopped in any Godzilla movie before.
@@kmeanxnethOG Godzilla just lumbered and destroyed things that got in his way. This one is a straight up asshole that deserved what was coming.

Ranking all the Godzilla films I've seen -
1. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
2. Godzilla (2014)
3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
4. King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)
5. Godzilla (1998)
Never seen all of Godzilla 1954 but it seems like a classic film.
Thank you for this, I'm going tonight.
Let me guess: you've watched a handful of Godzilla films and thus don't realize Minus One is average at best?
Better than shin? Shit I gotta see it
I was pleasantly surprised to see the theater was about 75% full during my showing.
Caught it mantinee in 4D, it was half full, great time~
One of the best movies I've seen this year. I actually really cared for the human characters and damn this was a tear-jerker. When the protagonist took off to redeem himself I got little teary eyed ngl.

It still doesn’t justify the massive plot hole of why is Godzilla even attacking.
And REDEMPTION!!
@@npcimknot958
It’s not a plot hole.
It's a conscious choice.
Doesn’t show it but I think they’ll talk abt ut both really good movies
The atomic breath lived up to its name, even Godzilla was surprised.
Yes sir!
That's funny. It did seem like he was looking up at the mushroom cloud in awe like "Holy shit."
I love the fact that when he uses the Atomic Breath, it damages him too. You can see his skin just burned from firing off one of those.
He was so proud of himself 😭
I was waiting for him to turn to the camera and wink as if saying “You see that shit?! That was some good shit wasn’t it?”
Now this is the modern Godzilla movie I’ve been waiting for, where Godzilla is basically a slasher villain and a force of nature. I’m excited to see it this weekend.
You should enjoy it. Godzilla is just a force of nature doing damage and leaving then coming back again every so often.
So many don't know he was the enemy
I've been waiting for this movie since 2014! This is what I was hoping for when the 2014 godzilla came to town. I liked that movie but they could have done so much more with it, but this movie is just a damn good movie. Period
Yea I just watched it nd told my dad nd he was said so he's like Jason in this one lol

That's not how it works dude. Entertaining industry budget depends upon their popularity. Hollywood movies plays almost all around the world whereas other countries movie industry have limited release.

I like how Toho does it. Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla are my favorites in the franchise.
Man... i need this one to ATLEAST have a sequel.

To be fair Godzilla was shot at by humans and then nuked and mutated into an abomination. I’d say he’s got a reason to be pissed.
This Godzilla is literally tweaking

This movie was amazing. I loved how it explored post war Japan. I’m a life long Godzilla fan and this was the first time I was genuinely scared of Godzilla. It has plotholes but the movie is so so good you dont care. Give me this kind of characters and ARCs and high stakes and we wont even notice the plotholes.
what are some of the plot holes?@@parareefaelias656
To point out why Godzilla is angry is because he was hit with an atomic bomb. That's usually been Godzilla big beff with humans in the ToHo movies. With this version it's the same thing plus just leave him alone. He don't wanna hear no noise, he doesn't want to see no people. 18:03 no Martin the Godzilla from the Monsterverse is not the same Godzilla we see in this movie. The Monsterverse established that he was found in 1954. Minus one Goji attacked Japan in 1947 And monarch was never a thing in this movie. Toho likes to reboot Godzilla a lot.
1984 to 1995 Heisei era
2000 millennium
Godzilla vs Megagirus
Gmk
Kiryu saga
Final wars
Shin Godzilla
All reboots with little to no connection to any movie aside from the original 1954 movie or flat out ignored in general.
@@lutherheggs451 ok stand alone thank you
Is Godzilla created by the bomb or he already existed and the bomb mutated it or annoyed it? Casual viewer, not a massive fan. So, I’m not super familiar except from casual comments.
@@brianng8350 the bomb mutated him
@@Godzilla-tu2cd
Nope!
MinusGoji was already attacking the Japanese in Odo Island in July 1945. It was before being hit with the Crossroads nuclear detonations at Bikini Atoll in 1946.
Nice to see another Godzilla movie *STOMPING* it's way to theaters
Godzilla (2014): The Hero
Shin Gojira: The Villain
Godzilla Minus One: The Force of Nature
I'd go on the reverse & say Shin was the force of nature and -1 was the villain.
The sound design and score of this film was amazing.
17:26 Don't forget that the -1 Godzilla is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than the monsterverse Godzilla. He's only about a third as big. It makes sense that he'd be much more agile and quicker.
Loved it! First Godzilla film in a long time where the characters mattered. And I loved the setting, it provided so much character.
The black and white cut is coming to theaters.
Godzilla represents the drop of the nuclear bomb so him being mean and ruthless is perfect
Spot on
That’s just bad writing, it makes no sense,
@@npcimknot958 in what way?
@@npcimknot958 actualy it is not , quite the oposite.
I think.
This movie shows that you can have good human characters you can attach to and good Godzilla scenes
@@tonyheard637yeah characters to care about. Even though had weak ones starting during the 60s
There wasn't a single moment Godzilla was on screen where he didn't seem dangerous af. His every appearance was threatening.
That product placement was amazing 😂🤣. ''This one eats more green chef''. I am screaming lol.
Love the "Rampage" video game reference!
Used to play it on the gameboy color when I was younger

The psychic shock to the Japanese people of losing the war is translated in a physical manifestation. Gojira is the destruction that was hidden from most Japanese during the war.
My girlfriend and I just saw it at the Imax. I legit think this is the most terrifying Godzilla ever.
Don't forget this movie was made with a 15 Million dollar budget. They just sent a message to Hollywood.
This is the best review/commentary channel. You guys are great critics. Keep up the good work!
It was pretty predictable, but the actors really put their heart into it. The performances caused me to tear up a couple times. I think overall I preferred Shin Godzilla, but this was pretty great for what it was. I'm sure there was a lot of CG, but everything felt like it was practical.
You have to admit the ending felt like Disney filmed it.
@edfa3706 That was in the 1954 film, which this movie is paying homage to.
@@edfa3706 If you know about the history of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki you'll know that it isn't a Disney ending.😭
Best Godzilla ever. It took me back to the old Japanese ones from my youth. I cared about the people. Dude was just evil for waking up in the morning. Great movie.
Loved Godzilla since I was a small child born in 86. This movie was awesome. This Godzilla was playing no games

Saw it last night in IMAX. Loved it so much and hope to see it again!
This movie had actual good CGI and good human characters. Definitely the best Godzilla movie since the 1954. This and 2005 king Kong best modern monster movies.

One of my favorite theater experiences of my life
This Godzilla is like a Gigantic Monster version of the Hulk. The more you attack the stronger he gets.
Omg at 11:22-11:45.. i died. That Baby Boy comparison.. hilarious
For me #1 is The creator, this is my #2 movie !! I really enjoyed this movie !!! The 3rd act actually reminded me of Oppenheimer movie no doubt 💯👌🏽
Godzilla Minus One is by far the best movie of 2023. The human characters was expertly written and Godzillas appearance was paced perfectly.
If this guy gets a chance to write, direct and head up VFX for another Godzilla, i will be at the imax with money in hand waiting for it,
Actually the bomb in the mouth did kill him technically but he regenerated immediately.
That was the oh s@#$ moment for me I was like my man Godzilla pulling a page out of DBZ right there. Then the films end I said oh man that's a Majin Buu level of regeneration humanity is well and truly done because even today we can crack a planet which means you aren't putting this Godzilla down.
Godzilla was just mad that he hasnt had a good game in years

I just finished watching 👀 it with my kids. This movie was on point, and it didn't feel like it was two hours long. I believe this is a remake from the 50s because of the setting and the way to defeat him.

Best Godzilla film ever. this one was just mean and terrifying
But if I recall correctly, the "current Godzilla" -in The Hollywood one, is actually Minilla (Or at least another Titanus Gojira juvenile) - I think Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will give more lore to this.
I've seen G-1 3 times in theaters and every time I've watched it I felt the emotions and the terror and connected with that hopelessness caused by Big G...it's no wonder the movie's won a few awards (including a Las Vegas award...fuck yeah my homecity shies tue big guy some love!)
“Please Godzilla, we just finished rebuilding our destroyed city and starting to maybe get our lives back on track”
Godzilla: behold all the fucks I give 14:23
Seen this movie as well, I am even a huge fan of Godzilla, BUT this version of him had me want him to be destroyed. He was a Menace and Terror. He was actually targeting people. Example: When Godzilla first walked into the city, He roared at the people in that city. By far the very best Godzilla Movie hands down. Toho knows their product and creation far better than anyone.
I think the people who are trying to say this Godzilla is the "most evil" have missed some pretty big fundamentals of the film.
