This movie gets alot of Flack but 2 things I legitimately enjoy are the designs for Dracula's vampire form and the Werewolf designs specifically The Black Werewolf form he transformed into at the end of the film.
As campy as it was the designs for their vampires and werewolves forms were brilliant especially Dracula's & Van Helsing's. Also between this and her role as Selene in the Underworld franchise Kate Beckinsale was & is still gorgeous. Also the behind the scenes and bloopers hilariously acknowledges the fact of how small their budget is and how limited everything is.
Van Helsing has just enough legitimately “cool” stuff to make it worth watching. The werewolf design and transformation was pretty respectable. A few of the shots of the vampire brides were deserving of a much better movie. There was also a slight “steampunk” aesthetic that made some scenes feel genuinely unique if not mildly anachronistic. I’d like to see a studio try this again, but downplay the camp and lean harder into the horror aspects.
This may be a pretty cheesy movie, but I still love it… Me and my dad would quote “you are the great Van HEEEELLLLsing” to each other for years and years after we first saw it and it always made us laugh lol
This is actually my mother's favorite bad movie. I think as soon as the DVD came out she bought it and bought the Blu-ray as well just because of how silly it all is. Although nowadays I think she confuses it with underworld... :0
I have a nostalgic love for this movie cause it eased me into horror with its goofy nonsense 😂 and plus it was always on TV like at least every other week for a while.
The only thing I remember from this movie is Hugh Jackman Werewolf. The other two werewolves looked alright, but Hugh's is probably my favorite design ever for a werewolf, next to Love Death + Robot's design
The best thing about this was the Werewolf design and the lovely Kate Beckinsale Universal was definitely trying to get something going with their Monsters but it was just to cheesy of a foundation to start with.
This is one of the few movies I loved as a kid that still holds up for me. I even caught some stuff like the "What in the name of Allah is wrong with you?" that Faromir gets thrown at him after he does his Q Schtick with the explosives. It's a dumb movie but it's really fun. Scott Sommers is the right level of "turn your brain off" entertainment for me, except GI Joe, that was just trash.
when the Dracula Bride threw the cow into the house, instantly thought "man, the owner definitely must think that's some ol' bullsh-t!". Fred Decker/Shane Black's the Monster Squad was a better outing for the Universal Monsters, hope we get a retro review of that flick eventually.
Would love to see a sequel to this movie franchise. The Action was top notch with Amazing Monster design. It was a franchise that felt action filled like the Brendan Fraser Movies. They did great CGI work for the time, ya it looks weird now but imagine the same action but updated to today’s tech. Heck even a new reboot of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would be amazing too. But back to Van Helsing it would be nice to see sequel truly even maybe a darker version
this is literally the definition of a guilty pleasure for me. I always have a good time watching it. also the whole werewolf thing I interpret as you turn on your first full moon and remain one from then on
The Mummy (1999) is a legitimately great movie, Van Helsing - not so much. Although I do love the designs for the Brides when they're in their winged forms.
The portrayal of Dracula in this movie is maybe my favourite because of how over the top he is. I always sneak up behind my friends when we are drunk on a night out and shout SUCCESS
Stephen Sommers said they wanted the sequel to be about Van fighting off Mummies and Anubis ....but the script was thrown into development hell. The third one was supposed to be about Van encountering the Abominable Snow Man (Yeti)
I was either six or seven when I saw this for the first time and had been absolutely obsessed. I watched it every single day. So much so my mom brought the dvd for me for Christmas. I still have it and watch it occasionally too. Though, I don’t think it’s bad. 😭
Idont know if you guys already knew this but the ending was refering to her and her family getting to heaven cuz they were forbidden to enter til the dracula curse was lifted
I didn’t know this movie was bad 🤷🏾♂️ I thought it was great and always wanted a sequel. Hugh Jackman played a great Van Helsing. I am always entertained at this movie when it comes on.
I don't even think of this movie as bad. Friends and I love this movie, flaws and all. ^^ It's just full of monsters, action, and spooky vibes. Perfect for Halloween. ^^
This movie has a special place in my heart. I know it’s not great, but it’s so much fun and the werewolves and vampires looked cool as hell. I love this goofy ass movie.
I first saw this, when I stayed over at a friend's house as a kid we watched this and the league of extra ordinary gentlemen and we all enjoyed both movies.
Even IF turning into a werewolf has to be done by night, that doesn't mean it has to be night to REMAIN a werewolf. Also, sometimes a full moon is visible early in the morning; day to night, and night to say, are continuums.
I enjoyed this movie as a kid, the Vampire chicks are SO HOT! Honestly, this movie is just fun, people are just too stuck up. That first fight with Mr. Hyde is still badass!
One of my Guilty Pleasure movies which I have watched over and over again! Despite with boring moments, bad CGI, story and characters are wooden and hollow... But with the action, music score, the Monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf-Man and Dracula's Daughters) and some moments are alot of fun to watch... I know this movie was bad, but I can't stop of I really enjoy it for what it was and probably gonna watch it this Halloween night!
It's almost heartbreaking that most consider this bad lol My childhood self loved this movie and I still do 😆 just like Godzilla 1998, I see the flaws, the corny stuff and the other bad stuff that others see but I absolutely cannot hate this movie or dislike it because it's like engraved in my blood due to me growing up with this film.
I never seen this all way thru but liked 1998 Godzilla as a teen then seen it on Netflix a few years back and I couldn't get thru it cause it's just soo corny and bad
I thought it was about to go on a retro section but this one in the Star Wars prequels are not bad at all…… well except for Star Wars 2 but I’ll take that over the sequels any day
Bad movie??????????? I love this film to death ❤❤❤❤❤. This should be part of the retro section, don’t care what y’all think this aged like fine wine better than these new monster movies that has no soul in it.

Please I'm eager to hear a more lengthy n detailed explanation of this Comment cuz I never noticed that was a missing part of the movie From the scenes you see van helsing, you already know what he's about. Yes, a little mystery about his past but that's ok, we don't have to know everything. Maybe that was for the sequel
Still has my favorite Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein designs in any fiction. I've seen a LOT of the concept art from the artist's instagram and they did an amazing job bringing his art to life.

When the flying Frankenstein crashed through just the right window at just the right moment, I started laughing so hard that the other two people in the theater kept giving me dirty looks. Any time you have Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman in the same movie, you need Abbot and Costello to make it work. I still feel like this was written by a 14-year-old whose studio executive father promised he'd turn his screenplay into a major motion picture for his birthday. "But it had cool designs - " yeah, that's exactly what 14-year-olds think is all it takes to make a good movie.
All the retro reviews always try to present this movie as utter garbage but I don't think it is It's not any worse than an average MCU movie for example, only in different setting
This movie should have been an origin story of how Van Helsing became a Vampire Slayer and Monster Hunter also only show Dracula and how the two become Mortal Enemies.
I'd love to see y'all review The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen too. I've always seen it as the perfect pairing with Van Helsing for a late 1800's set goofy fun early 2000's double fearure.
I remember being so hyped for this, Hugh Jackman was riding high from X2 I don't when exactly in the film but I think some where a third of the way in, IIRC it was a shot with him in silhouette through some fog at night that looked so stagey, and it just clicked in my brain that this just isn't working. It is still very ambitious but feels like one of those icarus film that flew too close to sun and just broke in the production phase with so many of the technical aspect not being quite perfected and looking noticeably bad Beckinsale is a total baddy in this, she looked great because it reminded me of her turn in Underworld. Rental
The Blu-ray was cool tho. You also got all the classic universal creature features for free. Original Frankenstein, Dracula in black and White for free. I had never seen them so it was an awesome bonus.
This movie had a lot of imagination and effort behind it. It was a great adventure movie like the Mummy (1999). Is it bad? Yes. But it’s also fun, and that’s all that matters in my opinion.
It may be a bad movie but it definitely has the best werewolf look out of many other films. The right balance between wolf and human. Other movies either make the werewolf too human or too wolf. American werewolf in London however does have the best transformation
This movie was fun for me growing up. yeah it was silly but that was the point. you were supposed to have fun at the campingness just like the mummy movies.
I really loved this movie when I was a kid. I watched it when I was 4 and it was something I watched on repeat 😂 I lived for the brides I loved their dresses and their demon forms were so cool. I liked the ending she was reunited with her family. That was the main goal at the beginning of killing Dracula.
In a world where we have Castlevania, Hellsing, Underworld, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, The Mummy with Brendan Fraser, Soul Eater, and Blade with Wesley Snipes, this Movie had no right being underrated and bagged on for being a corny & action packed take on classic Universal Monsters. I bet if this movie came out today, it'd be a Box Office success. Especially after the Teenification with the awful Twilight saga.
Still one of the go-to movies. If they ran it on big screens again, I'd go and watch it for 101th time cause it is really one of those watchcable, movies digesting all together - decent cgi (for those times), breezy humor, a mindblowing non-conventional Dracula, awesome music, the overall dinamic - it is all so perfectly light and entertaining. by the way, as for the ring in Dracula's ear, you guys should'eve done better research, cause the ring is the throwback to the ancient times in Transylvania (the area of modern Hungary and Romania), the gypsy culture motives, - men in 13-17 centuries wore earrings in one or both ears. It was a common style for pirates and so on. Nothing too modern about that. It's a part of this reinvented dracula style and it looked freaking fresh.
Like many comments acknowledge, this movie is GREAT. It's fun and entertaining from start to finish, and the music is epic. I watched it so many times and I never changed the channel whenever it was on. I'm really surprised DoubleToasted considers this a Bad Movie. They did a fantastic job with the low budget. I even remember the PlayStation game based on the movie was pretty good. I even bought the DVD, HD DVD & Blu-ray versions. But regardless of what anyone thinks of this movie, we all agree that Kate Beckensale was, is & forever 🔥🔥🔥
This movie is like what the dark universe wanted to be. Only difference is, this movie is actually watchable

I have my own butterfly effect myth that Dennis leary was in this movie
This movie won an oscar in my house. This was on repeat all the time growing up 😂😂
I try to predict what clip they'll play at the beginning of these vids and I'm happy to say I'm usually like 90% correct
i unironically love this movie.
“The mice looked well groomed” 😂 petty but necessary
The one bad movie roast I wish for this holiday season is the roast of “TC 2000” starring Bolo Yeung and Billy Blanks
They opened with one of my fav scenes.
They are magical. Of course they can lift a cow.
