    Thanks so much for this vid. My Yamaha 2011, 150 (with only 175 hours)is in the shop right now with overheating problem. They have ruled everything else out and are ready to pull mid section to look for exhaust leak into water jacket. I’m frustrated but now I better understand what they’re doing.

    I had a 2009 F250 that had corrosion on the exhaust and it warped the oil pan and allowed water to get in the oil. This happened in 2013 with 102 hours on the motor. It was 4 months out of warranty and Yamaha originally said they would fix it for free, then later said they decided not to. All maintenance had been performed by a Yamaha dealer, and that is why I will never buy another Yamaha again. It costs me over $10k. Suzuki for me since then.

      Really sorry to hear your experience, I happen to think Yamahas are great motors outside of this issue, I repaired it and haven’t heard a cough from the motor since.
      But from your experience, I can’t say I blame you.

    Only way to stop corrosion is with your zinks the zinks have to be working on the Out drive the exterior zincs and in the motor the powerhead is loaded with zinks that have to be changed

    I’ll keep an eye on your channel. 2005 250 with 400 hours. Omc made aluminum block for years and doesn’t have the corrosion issue of Yamaha metal. I ran jb weld on a mercury head that corroded for years and many hours. Eventually got washed away after five years and got water back in the piston and blew it up. Dread doing the exhaust update next winter and check the block condition.

    • @southshoreanglingandboatin6184
      @southshoreanglingandboatin6184  4 года назад

      summertop511 what type of jb weld did you use?
      Also, prior to this motor I had an 89 Evinrude 225 looper, and I agree, the corrosion was not as severe, however it did have corrosion issues on the block, because the heads were made with a different aluminum than the block, so the aluminum around the cylinder sleeves would corrode, and come off in chunks when the head was removed.
      But I do believe OMC has rectified the issue. I’m hoping I can slow the corrosion down to almost a stand still for the next 10 years. I wouldn’t use any type of epoxy on a cylinder head job tho, regardless of how strong it claims to be, because as you mentioned, once it gives the motor is toast. But to be honest, I think if you got 5 good years out of JB weld on a head job, you did well! Lol

    What made you decide to pull the mid section? Just preventative maintenance or the engine was acting up. I have two 225 and did the midsection on them.

    I have a 06 F250. I’m not having any issues my when I had it in for service they did the water pump and scoped the exhaust. I was woundering if you could get an idea of how bad it is just with a picture. I’m scared now next month to go offshore fishing.

    • @southshoreanglingandboatin6184

      The mid section has the oil pan, if the corrosion eats through the exhaust it will go through the oil pan as well and leak oil and get water in the oil

    What is gasket made of? I truly suspect galvanic problem here, dissimilar metals used with aluminum acting as anode. It is a slow process in your case but salt water acting as electrolyte (time of exposure, keeping lower unit submerged while docked, not flushing the motor properly after each use) or stray current issues could intensify and accelerate the problem. No wonder some are having this issue after just couple of years. Keep in mind Yamaha outboards are non isolated ground and boats kept in the marina would beceven more prone due to AC ground to DC negative bond. Way you use your boat and neglect could be contributing factor here but i suspect initial and core cause of this problem is an Yamaha engineering issue.
    Monitoring big zinc anode at the bottom of the motor bracket could be indicative of this problem, you should notice white powder crud there first, consider it early tell tell sign and keep it clean with non metal brush.

      Not sure what kind or metal the gasket is made of, but I'm pretty sure that's not the catalyst throwing off the charge. Some have mentioned that the alloy used to cast the block was of poor quality and more susceptible to corrosion, but not really sure. Its not neglect on my part, i bought this engine with 1,800 hours on it, so it may have been poorly maintained by the previous owner. i freshwater and salt-away flush my motor after every use and its never left in the water. it has the original internal anode's in the block which i replaced and will replace each season, but relatively speaking, I've seen far worse cases on these motor than what mine exhibited. I'm definitely leaning towards a Yamaha engineering issue, as it happens to these motors more often than not even if well maintained...

    Would this exhaust issue cause oil loss? My engine is losing oil. 2005 f250. No oil inside cowling or in the water while running. Doesn’t appear to be burning it as well. All cylinders are good. Any help would be great!

      Sold my boat in October haven’t heard back from the new owner yet. I’d day it’s a good route to go if you do it right.

    what are the symptoms of a corrosion problem??

    • @southshoreanglingandboatin6184
      @southshoreanglingandboatin6184  3 года назад

      Well it depends on how severe the corrosion is. typically mild corrosion has no immediate "symptom" depending on where it is. unless its in the thermostats or water jackets, it may cause overheating. But the affects of corrosion usually aren't apparent until it has already damaged the metal like in this case. i just so happen to open up the Mid section and discovered the damage before any was done. a simple inspection of the exhaust with the lower unit removed may give you an idea of whats going on inside, but again its not definitive. most of the time guys report losing oil, over heating and loud exhaust to name a few far gone symptoms. only real way to know, is to open it up.
      hope this helped.
