Thank you ATK for helping me to cook for the last 30 years
If you don't want to do the mess of breaking up the pasta use campanelle it's a frilly pasta that works well here.
There’s just something about lasagna noodles that tastes just right in this dish. You are right though about using another noodle though
Farfalle is another good choice.
It’s a good idea but here the point is to have a layer of flat and wide noodles.
@@monicadgarcia Not sure if you noticed but at the 7:45 mark Ashley says she'll stir the mixture every few minutes, so the initial layering can still be done with the campanelle. The point was you could still do it with the Campanelli and still end up with the same result as the Campanelli is a fairly wide and frilly edge noodle, but you don't have to take the time and make the mess of breaking up lasagna noodles.
@@laurao3274 Oh the bowtie noodles!! I really like those but rarely use them, and they're much more flat than campanelle so it could give a more similar effect! I like this idea a lot, thank you for sharing! ⭐😁
The "meaty skillet lasagna" from ATK's "Cooking for Two" book is one of our weeknight regulars. We like to use hot italian sausage for the meat.
Same with my husband and I. That hot Italian sausage really kicks the dish up nicely.
Thank you for reminding me, I own that book!
as someone without an oven, I REALLY appreciate this recipe... I love lasagna and really miss making it. Thank you so much for this recipe!!!!
Love ya, Ashley. You’re one of ATK’s best presenters. Thanks for this recipe. I love to make lasagna but it’s always such as chore, so I’ll try this. I’ve got just the pan.
🥰
What happened to mozzarella cheese? Isn't it part of the traditional lasagna? I suppose you could add it at the same time as the ricotta cheese. This is perfect for a one pot dinner since my oven is broken. Thank you!
I agree with you
“Where is the mozzarella cheese ?????
And normally egg is mixed with the ricotta.
I've made it with 8 oz. of mozzarella added along with the other cheeses. It's definitely good!
Also the coriander seeds are missing. That's how my Italian grandmother used to make it.
Needed some Mozzarella on top before covering : )
I've made this several times. It is delicious and easy. And really is a great lasagna wanna be...
I made this tonight and it was EPIC! That's why I trust ATK because these jokers test and test these recipes. The liquid and parm cheese melded perfectly! A few upgrades tho: I added Mozz cheese on the top and threw under the broiler for 2 minutes because I needed Mozz in my life; I put all of my sauces and water into a bowl and seasoned them with Italian herbs and spices like i'd normally do; I also seasoned my rocotta cheese with salt, pepper, and parsley. This def a keeper!
I’ve made this a few times. It’s a good weeknight meal!
OMG. Back in my university days my roomie and I made store bought Hunt’s Skillet Lasagna. It was fantastic, but sadly no longer available. We impressed many a suitor with our cooking skills (the box was thrown away and we took the credit). I would love to have an exact duplicate of this amazing dish. My husband can’t figure our why my lasagna doesn’t taste as good as he remembers. Thanks Ashley, I hope this is the same as that yummy easy dish...

@@stanmarcusgtv Wow, Thanks Stan! Do you remember it too?
I watched this with Julia on tv in an old old episode but glad i found it
I will definitely try this; all of your recipes work. And I love your enthusiasm.
So happy to hear, Judi! And thank you!
Thanks I'm handicapped and this will be easy for me to make
I could never make it
Where's the Italian spices and herbs....
In addition to mozzarella the missing fennel and/or oregano isn't taking it to lasagna for me
There is nothing in the world better than a delicious pasta dish. Nothing!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
We love Ashley! And it’s a gorgeous dish 😋
Great recipe - I stick mine under the broiler to get some brown crispy bit's🥂
So good... I added some fresh mozarella and padano in between the layers, turned out amazing.
Isn't mozzarella a "traditional" component? Just asking.
I remember this recipe from over a decade ago! Every time I made it, it was absolutely delicious. Thank you for refreshing my memory on this, Ashley (and everyone behind the cameras)! I'll try to make this next week.
How easy is that! It has to be just as good as the complicated lasagna dish.
I made this dish after seeing this and it’s so good and easy! Thanks Ashley!
YAY! You are welcome and thanks for trying it!
You might see lasagna on a stovetop, but all I am seeing is Hamburger Helper made from scratch.
What’s wrong with that? If you watched the whole video, she also stated it’s an unconventional lasagna. Also, this is way better than hamburger helper.
I made this and it really turned out great! Thanks; I'm sharing this with everyone I know.
This looks so good. What a quick replacement when you are craving lasagna.
This is genius! What a great idea. Making this over the weekend.
Looks like goulash to me. Where is the seasoning to make it taste more like lasagna?
I had to go back and replay because other than the dried red pepper flakes I didn't see her add any other seasoning. She did say the tomato sauce had some but I think I would still add some more.
that what I thought. It's american goulash with ricotta
This would make a great dinner along with a spinach salad, crusty bread and a nice bottle of wine.
I have a trick to par-cook lasagna: lay it in a sheet pan and cover with boiling water and then with tin foil. Leave 15 minutes. Drain. Good to go for rollatini or lasagna without boiling a lot of water and using a huge pot to cook the noodles!
That’s a good idea. I will have to try that.
The meal really says the the quote “don’t judge a MEAL by its cover” 😂
Great idea, hamburger helper has a version but this is much much better, I find when cutting onions that leaving the root end on the onion stays together
@_AmericansTestKitchen fu this is a scam and I'm reporting you
This is so easy to make low carb/keto/diabetic friendly - just leave out the pasta! Great recipe. The only thing missing is the mozzarella!
I do low carb by using Barilla's Protein pasta
I agree, where is the mozzarella? I might try adding it on top st the end.
Ha, you know we make this one all the time! Such a great weeknight recipe!
GREAT MINDS!
We’ll done. Great recipe!! It tastes delicious!!
Who hoo!! I've made this for dinner tonight...It's a hit...I love It!
Ashley's recipes are delicious! Can we please see more that are low carb and keto friendly in the future?
Veal-baby cow, I've never heard of ground meat loaf in my whole life! But this looks delicious Thank you.
This looks scrumptiously delicious. Thank you!
I've made skillet lasagna many times after watching a "Binging With Babish" video on "One Pot Pastas", which you can find on here. He actually gives credit to ATK for the recipe, but he makes a few changes. Instead of meatloaf mix, he uses Italian sausage with casings removed. Instead of diced tomatoes, he uses crushed San Marzano tomatoes. And he adds some mozzarella cheese with the other cheeses. It's pretty good -- my only complaint is that the leftovers tend to dry out after refrigerating, probably because it's not very saucy.
I'm sure this tastes fine. Once you make the meat sauce, making lasagna in layers is easy. I guess this saves a few dishes to clean. But I don't see the time save being worth just making layered lasagna. Other than basil, I didn't see any other traditional Italian herbs like oregano, parsley etc. Maybe I missed it. It reminds me of american goulash with ricotta put in it.
The whole point of this recipe is to have a quick one pot meal for a weeknight. You can have this done in half an hour as were a traditional lasagna would take hours to make. Plus you can add those traditional seasonings to the recipe.
You could 💯make this in a microwave. Same steps, same technique. It would totally work.
I'm going to make this one. Thanks
I dont have an oven in my campervan this is perfect thank you 😋
I will definitely make this one! Thanks as always Ashley :)
You're welcome, Chris!
I have to say, 1/3 the onion and equal celery and carrot is much better.
Yeah. Mirepoix is a classic flavour base.
But I like the corner crunchy parts! Still looks amazing.
Thankyou!!!! Bon appetit
I will try this! Since all the ingredients are the same it should be excellent!
Looks delicious
A great new video from Ashley!!!
I have made it before and it is awesome! I will be making it again soon.
I love this idea. So cool.
Such an easy swap! I am going to make it this week! Yum
You make America test kitchen videos easier and quicker to follow. The Babish Effect
Recipe has been on my mind since I first saw it. Gathered all of the ingredients and decided tonight was the night...everything was goi g great...until it came to the noodles. Unfortunately, in several areas my broken pieces got "glued" together early on and then most of them ended up on my plate...VERY unappetizing. If one is going to break up the noodles any way, then why not switch to a different pasta all together? Perhaps then it'd be easi😮er to "catch" and separate noodles that had melded together into a wet cardboard -like consistency. (The rest of the ingredients mix together well...but the broken lasagna noodles? Not so much.)
Nice to see you using local olive oil. Shoutout to California Olive Ranch! ✌️
Clever! Looks delicious! 👏👏
I cant wait to make this while camping!
That’s a good idea. Prep your stuff at home and bring with you.
@@wandac396 Absolutely!
Love this idea!
When you do this, how do you keep the pasta from being pasty?
I know what you mean...sometimes one-pot pasta meals can be that way. But this one takes the cake!
Great recipe but I would have to add more seasoning (salt especially)😅
I would wait to add the salt after the addition of Parmesan. I added a healthy half teaspoon and thought to myself that it wouldn’t be enough. Glad I didn’t add more because it was perfect with the addition of the parm.
I’ll stick with my layered no boil lasagna.
What specifically is veal? Baby lamb? Or baby calf?
Tip, is you can put the lasagna noodles in a bowl of warm water and and let stand for about 7 to 10 minutes , the noodles will become easy to manage and ready to cook.
Try it and pleas let me know how it worked out for you ,it worked well
For me thank goodness I had to cook for a crowd what I made was spinach and ricotta Lasagna roll up’s so I tried it and it worked well my Roll ups were easy to prepare and oven ready making it easy for me to bake in the oven and everyone liked them .
Happy cooking everyone.
This is great meal for someone who lives by themselves
ATK teaches how to chop onions weekly.
ATK,HELLO, ASHLEY,I LOVE THE IDEA,NO OVEN,I NEED TO MAKE THIS, THANKS,,,,,,,🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My wife does not eat red meat. Any suggestion on how to modify this to work with ground turkey or chicken? I'm assuming some additional fat would be needed but not sure about anything else.
Ground turkey would be 93 or 97% lean for white meat, just add more oil, fat, or lard to compensate
Ground chicken is also a viable option
Shadybrook hot Italian turkey sausage
Looks good but needs more cheese.
I would have added mozzarella, but that’s just me. 😂
@@wandac396Ah, me too. It's not lasagna without mozzarella
Wednesday is Prince lasagna day. What a great idea!
I am curious why cant you use no boil noodles?
Probably because of texture. No bake noodles are thinner than the regular and probably harder to break into pieces. Also the standard lasagna noodles are cheaper.
This looks really good. Question: I usually drain the grease after cooking ground meat. Doesn't look like that was done here. Is that correct that you don't drain the grease? Thank you.
No, she didn’t drain. The fat adds a lot of flavor. I never drain my ground beef.
Exactly. Too much fat gives bad heart burn.
She specifically said to use 85% meat, which renders much less fat than the usual 80%. If 85% is still too much, just skim some of it off.
Any lasagna can be baked with raw (uncooked) lasagna. Just add a cup of water to the bake pan and make sure the noodles are submerged.
Layering is so easy avoiding it seems silly.
A perfect recipe for me 🙂🇨🇦
Lean ground chicken over here ♥️
You could put a piece of coal on the fingertip of an Italian, and they'd turn it into a diamond watching this video. (This is a reference to the finger-pinch gesture, and I don't think I spelled that out well enough. But now that I've explained my joke, go back to the original text and it's funny, right? If I explain a joke then it becomes funny, is the rule, I think.)
I'm a massive ATK fan, but I'm not sure I get this one. Make some ragu alla Bolognese, a little ricotta, boil some rigatoni, mix it together, add some basil, you've got a thing. It's not lasagne, but it's a thing.
Canned diced tomatoes are not my fave. Not because they're in a can. Love a canned tomato, over here. Canned tomato sauce, canned whole peeled tomatoes, canned crushed tomatoes, canned tomato paste, absolutely. But canned diced tomatoes are treated differently, at the factory. The factory owners want to mimic the texture of fresh diced tomatoes, but any canned tomato product is treated with heat. A lot. For a while. This will soften the tomato. So in the canned diced tomatoes, they add calcium chloride. It works too well. The tomatoes never break down. They're firm forever.
It's not a brand thing. Go to the store and look at the ingredients for pretty much any brand. They'll have several varieties that are just tomatoes and salt, but for the diced variety, suddenly calcium chloride makes an appearance. It's just too good at its job.
I'm a Ferris fan, too, Tom!
That looks pretty good! It never occurred to me to put meat in lasagne before.
I've made a similar one pan lasagna. Wondering if I could make it in a Dutch oven on the stove top?
Hi Faith! I think you probably could, yes. Circle back and let us know!
Hey Faith...I literally just made this tonight in the Dutch oven on the stove. Came out perfect. The only thing I tweaked was a little more heat since those Dutch ovens are such tanks to heat up. So if it said medium, I did between medium and medium high. If it said medium low, I did between medium and medium low.
Definitely works better in a sauté pan with higher sides. No good reason to use a non stick fry pan for this.
How about doing a recipe for lasagna in the oven without a stove...
Is it okay if I hold the knife with my right hand when I chop? I tried it your way and it’s really hard.
I don’t recall it being said to hold the knife in your left hand. She might be left handed. You want to hold the knife in your prominent hand.
@@wandac396 If Ashley uses her left hand to hold the knife, then everybody should. She’s a professional. I’ll keep practicing.
@@matthewbbenton ?? You make no sense, but whatever.
@@matthewbbentonShe's left handed, that's why she's holding the knife in her left hand. If she was right handed, she'd hold it in her right. You do realize it's not safe kitchen practice to hold the knife in your non dominant hand
I really don't know how using one hand as opposed to the other makes a difference in how the food tastes. You do know she is left handed and that is why she is using her left hand, right? Either way use whatever hand you need to and not chop a finger off.
you could make the 'serious eats homemade ricotta' at the same time. also, throw in a buttery garlic bread.
A very very nice dish..
But deffo NOT a Lasagne. ( see Italy 🇮🇹)
Looks yummy but no mozzarella…?
I always laugh when they say “just a little bit ” ….of anything…and then they add ten times the amount that “a little bit” would actually be.
How much ricotta cheese should be added?
🙂👍.
Looks tasty, but it needs a burrata or some torn fresh mozz to go with that ricotta!
69th … heck yeah 👊🏻💪🏻👨🏼🍳
Yay for you!
I also feel great when I am the 1 like, or 100th like or 667th like...
How would replace the meat for this dish ?
Look up vegetable lasagna to get an idea. I’d say the same veggies used, you can use in this dish.
@@wandac396 thanks Wanda 🙏🏼
This looks awesome, thank you. Much more doable when in a rush. I wish that it had been convenient to have vegan options of those meals, e.g. with a mushroom sauce and vegan cheese substitutions...
Soooo, Hamburger Helper.
To a domestically challenged person like me.... she's JUST SHOWING OFF cutting up the onion. For shame ma'am. 😅😂
Iam convinced everyone at the test kitchen are stoners cause... *points wildly at example* 🤣
*sets up chair for the Italians*
missing mozzarella.....just saying 😋
I’m allergic to Onions. Do I have to add Onions to this dish?
They are pretty basic.
Im curious what the Italians will have to say.
it's like hamburger helper
Only better. 😋
What makes it lasagne? Mixing minced meat with pasta and tomato sauce ... "genius"
