Tudor Black Bay 58: A Week On The Wrist In Italy - My Likes & Dislikes

  • After owning and borrowing almost every type of Rolex and Tudor Submariner, it's time to reacquaint myself with the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight (39mm with black dial and bezel) as I continue my search for the perfect dive watch from these two brands.
Join me for a special episode filmed in Italy's stunning Lake Como region, where I spent a week working, vlogging, and getting to know the most successful Black Bay from Tudor by far. Is it all hype or does it live up to its cult-like status? How does it compare to all the other Submariners I've owned over the last decade? In this #watchreview video, I share my likes and dislikes along with my thoughts on the Black Bay 58's design, evolution, history, and its Urban Gentry status as a true #strapmonster.

There was an original Tudor Submariner issued to the Canadian Navy in the early 1980's that had the same hand/dial configuration as the bb58, a lot of people don't know this & assume tudor came up with this for the bb. I think it looks fine & I actually prefer it to the Mercedes hands!

Loved this show!! What an amazing setting and views! Well done on getting out there!!! We’re the airports empty??;) having not delved into the vintage market yet(it’s coming;) the BB58 is by far the best NEW diver I’ve owned or reviewed in terms of value, spec , brand history and SIZE!!! Drilled lugs would definitely have been nice . I think they need a distinction from The Pelagos and not just the size, having the Snowflake and traditional Subby markings homages (which is what it’s aim is) the roots of the beginnings and the moment Tudor became its own dive watch.
One day I look forward to handling an old Tudor Subby! I’ll pop round one day;)

      Tristano,
The way you review all levels of watches is one of the things that makes your channel the premier watch enthusiast channel on YT. Do you remember when everyone freaked out a few years ago because they were afraid you were "selling out" or at least moving to only high-end watches? Of course it was flattering, only because they did not want any messing about with your format. I like it when you wander off and talk about coffee, clocks, clothing, whatever. Thanks for doing what you do so well.

Beautifully made video. I own a BB58 and love it. I like the snowflake hands which are far easier to read than Mercedes hands. The combination of the traditional Sub dial indices and snowflake hands works for me. Mine is on a leather strap (and the leather enhances the warm gilt tones of the dial far better than the steel bracelet). I would have liked spring bar holes in the case.

Great video my friend! Very nice scenery indeed. I've had my BB58 for a few weeks now and I love it. Very accurate. Like you said, more positives than negatives. The rivets don't bother me at all but I feel like the bracelet could be improved with the addition of half links and also an adjustable clasp. The half link issue was solved by Uncle Seiko; they manufacture and sell them specifically for the BB58. The bracelet now fits perfectly. Cheers!

TGV, I have owned two Tudor Black Bay Watches. They are a gen 1 Chrono and the GMT. I have a rather large wrist so what looks good for you at 39mm, for me the 41mm is perfect. I actually sold my S&G Rolex blue faced sub for more than 2 times what I paid for it in the early because I viewed it as being a magnet for a call for robbery or when at business meetings it was a distraction for others. The Tudor BB's are the middle both in terms of look, fee and performance.

  • @joshua-johnwheeler4722
    @joshua-johnwheeler4722 2 года назад +1

As a BB58 owner, I entirely agree with your synopsis. For me, most of the "negatives" have been avoided by wearing it on straps... I just with they'd have gone with the "lollipop" hand set found on some vintage Subs, it would've maintained the Tudor heritage and kept the Mercedes hand haters at bay!
As a daily wearer, I suits me perfectly. Mine's just as frequently on boats and in the sea as it is in meetings and restaurants. Considering the swap to a two tone pre-ceramic Sub soon however.

@Harry Donovan Ha! You’re right. I never even realized one was rose and the other was yellow. They both look great to me though. And don’t let the sizing fool you. My wrists are not large at all, but as long as the lugs don’t overhang, I’m good with it. All comes down to personal sizing preference though.

As so often is the case, you have perfectly articulated my misgivings about Tudor’s Black Bay range which I’ve always somehow felt but struggled to quite know why?
Maybe my weeny 6.5” wrist is a factor here but the only current Tudor that speaks to me is the BB 36mm and, even though I like that a lot, there’s still something that causes my trigger finger to rest a while.

Your point about modern watches being technically superior but somewhat cold is a very important and interesting point. One could say modernism itself with its high tech materials is also somewhat cold and uninviting. This means that modern watches with some history and passion have an edge. Perhaps that's why old, defunct brands enjoy such love from the gentry. Their history warms them up and provides a depth of feeling that modern engineering, for all its brilliance, struggles to achieve. Enjoyed your video!

I have the original, black, BB58 and love it. Two things that would be a nice improvement though:
    1. Some sort of easy link extension on the bracelet.
    2. 120 click bezel rather than 60.

I own the BB58 in gilt and I definitely enjoyed your review. For me the rivets are not an issue or no divers extension. I simply keep mine on a strap. If on the bracelet which is rare I will wear going out to a show either at the Kennedy Center or special occasions. Just in case if anyone has issues with the bracelet needing that little extra go ahead and order that Uncle Sieko half link. You won’t be disappointed.
As for the snow flake hands and rounded markers I can agree with except for one thing. When scuba diving or snorkeling I can see the hands much clearer than I can with my 5 digit sub and Mercedes hands so For that reason I learned to love the BB58 handset.
Lastly, the BB58 gilt really shines under candle lit environments and has a warmth to it in that environment. Not sure if you have experienced it in that situation. I have to also add with this the last two videos were great! This review was spot on and glad you were able to experience the watch. Keep those videos coming!

I loved my Heritage 58. It didn't get enough wrist time so I gifted it to my younger brother for his birthday (he's never pay that kind of money for a watch). So, naturally, he loves it and wears it constantly. I do find myself looking at them again, I may have to re-purchase one.

Another exquisite thread of this author... but it's been beautiful!
Yes, Italy has a diversity and culture like no other, further more the insane topics. The highest level in Arts, Architecture, Enginering and Science too. I think that they got almost all the good things of life in that land.
About these extraordinary pieces you brought one more time to us, I,m not a user from Tudor yet, but I consider their product as a really great oportunity for getting an "entry-luxury" watch... nowadays. But at the sametime I believe that this oportunity is also offered by another holly icon in the watch industry as Longines. In this last case, I also know that Longines produce its owns calybers or in-house movements, the same that Tudor does as well. I,m in love!!!
Thank you very much for your effort T.G.V. !

The wait list is so long.. i’m not sure I’m gonna wear it I just put it in their closet talked away. I’m a total Rolex guy. I own three rolexes. So the tutor black bag 58 and sterling silver with something that caught my attention because of the brown dial brown basil and brown leather strap which I thought was totally hot.. Great commentary!

Hi Tristano, glad to see you enjoyed the quick work trip here in Italy. The bb58 is, in my opinion, a real banger. I consider it the true heir of the dear old sub, a watch that can be purchased by pretty much everyone (if you save some money) and that will always be on point no matter the outfit or the occasion. Big love from Italy, ci vediamo il prossimo anno

I was fairly meh about my BB58 when it arrived. I don't have the luxury of living near an AD so I made my decision after watching a bunch of reviews on just how "perfect" this watch is. It has grown on me. I wish it had exactly the same proportions with a date function. I do enjoy the vintage look. The size is perfect for my 18.5cm wrist. I put it straight on a rubber strap (personal preference) haven't taken it off for 2 weeks and I have a 60 plus watch collection.

Wow…Lake Como! Was watching an episode of *Il commissario Montalbano* last night, so you might say that warmed me up for this surprise video from you. The GMT Roller is nice but I'm warming up much more to both the Tudor BB and (far more approachable for me from a cost standpoint, natch) Squale TGV. Nice representation of your collection you've taken "on tour." Haven't settled on a diver at the moment, but I'm pretty dead-set on 40mm max diameter. Glad the trip turned out well, and that you had fun, even while away on business!

Firstly, how cool is it that you get to be in Italy - even if it is for work (guessing it's enjoyable work too). I'm a bit envious. We haven't been to Italy for a few years and really miss it. As for the BB58 - it's tempting. I owned the original BB some years back. I liked it but found it just a bit too slab sided. The size didn't bother me (7in wrists) but wished it had a bit more refined profile. Perhaps, due to it's thinner build the slab sidedness won't be such a problem with the 58. I do wish they'd kept the rose emblem on the dial though. So much more romantic. And I agree - the fake rivets on the bracelet are a bit silly. Enjoy your trip, looking forward to the next video! Ciao, John

    Hello chap!
Yeas as you can notice I have been watching (re-wachting I should say) during the weekend your older videos especially the collection reviews as I'm looking for some inspiration at the moment, and it's very nice seeing a new video popping up while I thought it was an old one too 😀
Very nice review again, I do share 100% of your opinion about the 58, I love it and I'm sure I would love it but in the main time I know that the negatives you pointed out especially relating the néo-vintage mimetic elements will bother me in the long term period.
Hate and love relationship with this one, we will see if one day I will end up buying one , but I guess I only need to go for a vintage diver..
Wishing you a very pleasant week

The BlackBay58 is hyped for a reason. Elegant, traditional although totally modern. There are many good things to say about this watch.
But I have my beloved Omega Seamaster Electric Blue from the 1990’s and am in no immediate need for another diver😊
By the end of the day nothing beats your Tudor Submariner from the mid 60’s.
    Keep up the good work👍

I tried on the BB36 yesterday, as I was in my local Tudor boutique and I have to say it fits so well. Such a great little watch. A 36mm oyster case is really special. I need to try an explorer on next! If Tudor ever make a gilt dial BB36, or Rolex make a gilt dial Explorer, I think I will be forced to buy one!

  • @frankpentangeli7945

I own the BB 58 925 (the sterling silver variation), and I think it's really the best one of the bunch (including the solid gold and green model that I find rather loud and ugly, not to mention astronomically expensive). Aside from the shimmering silver case and stunning taupe dial and bezel insert, the 925 completely avoids the pitfalls of the metal bracelet by being made available only with a strap ... in my case a deep, dark brown leather strap. It's absolutely beautiful. Oh, and it has a see-through case back, which makes it kind of rare for a Tudor to say the least. I would have preferred the traditional solid case back, but I guess Tudor didn't want to make one in sterling silver for whatever reason. Nevertheless, it's a fantastic watch, and really the only BB 58 I would care to buy.

Wonderful, TGV. You managed to catch that feeling, just after arrival and a little delirious from a long haul flight, of sudden difference, maybe the raven's call and those faint conversations in another language drifting across. Lovely.
