You forgot to mention a crucial point. Trading away Kessel not only landed us Freddie but allowed the Leafs to tank hard enough to win the lottery and draft Matthews. Along with Marner and Nylander, the core pieces was gathered and now we have our team
Yes, now they have the team led by a guy with the personality of drywall, a pair of nostrils that disappears anytime he gets touched, and a goalie who psyches himself out in game 7 situations.
A team .... you mean a first round exit team , they will never win anything with 50% of the cap in 4 forwards, one of those need to go .. it’s not the Centers , it’s not Nylander where his contract is actually fair .. gotta be Marner .. home town boy who demanded 11 mil , buy bye
I'd say Kessel is the clear winner of that whole thing. Traded twice already, goes to Penguins gets two Stanley Cups!! Honestly out of all these teams, at the time, not sure he could have or would have gotten 2 Cups with either of the other teams. Think he found the right team eventually, even if it did take a few tries.
I laughed out loud so hard when you told the Tyler Seguin story at the bar where he tapped you on the shoulder saying "thank you Phil Kessel?" After using the leafs pick to select Dougie 😂 that's an all timer, and that's a dang it
Great video! I love digging through the spider webs of trades and seeing how teams evolve! Please show past teams that had AMAZING ROOKIES! And how the teams changed... leafs are one prime example in the mid 80s... but check out the 1999-2000 flames team! Insane
You should examine the Stevens-Shannahan-Pronger situation with the St Louis Blues. I heard that way down the line and many years later that one of the related draft picks turned out to be Jordan Binnington
So, not only did the Leafs help the Bruins win a cup with this trade, they then helped BOTH teams get to the Cup final in '16 (not mentioning that they also traded Reimer to the Sharks in a separate deal that same deadline). Also that Seguin story is fantastic.
thank you for this series Steve as it made me start looking back thru how some trades have evolved for my favorite team the Anaheim Ducks and there is a trade that parallels and overlaps with this trade tree that I think would be interesting to look at because there is reason to say that at least 5 teams have won this trade and branches of it are still evolving today for teams that got something from it. The trade I was looking at is the 2011 trade that sent Tomas Kaberle to the Boston Bruins
Probably one of the reasons why the bruins have so many under paid players. Pastrnak and Marchand have the best team contracts in the league. If the season continues we might see both hit 100 points for the same price is mcdavid.
Even with the cup win, it's hard as a Boston fan to look at this trade without thinking how badly they botched it. Eriksson was a disappointment, Smith wasn't ready and then they traded Smith and got an even bigger disappointment in Jimmy Hayes.
@@Roller11111 Not to mention, he traded Seguin because he didn't fit their team...imagine if they would of had him against the Blues. Perhaps the Leafs would of been handing out more Stanley Cups.
Zucker's first game with the Pens was against the Lightning... As a Bolt fan, living in MN, I got to see Zucker play and knew he was missing SOMETHING. My God, seeing him play next to Crosby was insane. Absolutely a whole new level with those two. They just gave Crosby a new, younger weapon, and the sky is the limit with those two. We'll see how Kessel's run with Arizona/beyond goes. I don't see things going well down south for him, but hey, crazier things have happened.
Just had to put the dagger in my heart at the end with Zucker huh Also imagine getting tapped on the shoulder, ya know just casually, by Tyler Seguin 😂
oh phil kessel 2 time Stanley cup champion and leafs legend ... not at the same time and the leafs have been paying him a million dollars every year for the penguins to use him to help them win cup and now hes living in Arizona. how does brian burke have any credibility after the disaster of the leafs and his short time with the flames. tyler seguin is a legend.
Justin Koster because he brought the twins to Vancouver every GM makes bad trades and every GM makes good trades. For every Kessel to Toronto there’s a Sedin twins to Vancouver.
When it comes to the Dougie trade, 2 things worth noting; Dougie wanted out of Boston and wouldnt have signed there anyways so Boston scrambled to get as good of a trade out of him as possible. And 2, that senyshyn pick could (SHOULD) have been either Matthew Barzal, Kyle Connor, or Thomas Chabot as Senyshyn went 15, and the 3 players ive just mentioned went 16 17 and 18...
@Sportsnet I think one that would be interesting is the Craig Rivet one from MTL to SJ ! That was a monster of a trade for Montreal that ended up including Pacioretty, Subban, Gorges and more after that (and basically the only good move Gainey did as a GM.. remember Gomez?) Anyway, thanks for these Steve and keep em coming !
It's kinda old but I would like if you did the trade tree that brought the Leafs their first 50 goal scorer, Rick Valve. Amazing that this trade was made by Leafs owner Harold Ballard when he served as GM.😀
Freddie wasn't back-up in Anaheim, he started as one in 13/14, but even in that year, he has most play off appearances out of three Anaheim goalies at the time - him, Hiller (who overshadowed Giguere few years before that, so not a weak competition) and very young Gibson. In 14/15 and 15/16 seasons, Freedie was number one goalie and Gibson was mostly his back up - even though they played similar amount of games in 15/16 regular season, Freddie was still first choice for the play-offs. And his record in that three years in Anaheim was pretty good. Too bad they didn't manage to finish Chicago in 2015 conference finals, they were 3:2 up in that series and then lost game six and home game seven.
Since I'm from the future, I'll tell you that Kessel wasn't traded from the Coyotes. He did sign a contract for 2022 with the Golden Knights, and officially broke the games played streak in the process.
I had to laugh when Steve brought up the Ayres game in his Hamilton story because the team that the Leafs lost to in that game also happens to have......Dougie Hamilton
I should also add that these videos are awesome and you should make a bunch more. I think their just as great to watch as dang its and hat picks. It's truly amazing Leaf fans continue to think the Kessel acquisition was smart. Most everyone thought Burke lost his mind giving up 2 1st's and a 2nd. And he did. Burke failed miserably in his quick rebuild attempt. Another lost natural rebuild gone bad. Yes, Burke is a colleague, but he bares responsibility!
What's funny is that Toronto ended up trading Kapanen back to Pittsburgh. I forget what they got in return or what else was sent to Pittsburgh, though.
Technically this is still going considering penguins reacquired kapanen from Toronto and sent Filip hallander to Toronto in the Kapanen trade and then just reacquired Hallander from Toronto in the Mccann trade
I don’t think I’m overstating at all when I say in terms of pure trades, Kessel had to be one of, if not THE best trades for Pittsburgh. He was essentially in that back to back run and worked harder than anyone to make it happen
Jesus Christ Steve, I know we all have plenty of time to ourselves right now but damn, you went full Charlie Kelly on that flow chart minus the cigarette between your fingers 16:06
If you're wondering why that is, take look at the Leafs playoff history. Burke is without a doubt the worst GM the Leafs have ever had in their entire history.
