Blues fan here. Thank you, Toronto for our boy Steen...never was going to be an elite but has always been a consistently-awesome two-way forward and strong leader. As for Splodeybones Colaiacovo, well, he gave us - and the world - one of the best GIFs ever. Look it up!
Alex Steen went to my school in Winnipeg...he was 3 years younger than me, so it's not like we hung out, but I did know who he was (because I followed the Jets, and at the time his dad was one of my favourite players). He didn't have an aura of fame around him though...thankfully, people treated him pretty normally, from what I could tell.
I remember how mad I was when they made that trade. I was watching Pierre McGuire say Steen would never be a goal scorer or anything other than a bottom 6 guy. And I thought, Pierre McGuire would never make it as an analyst on TSN.
Steen and Petro are the only players continually on the roster since 2008, Perron left and returned after several seasons. Shows how solid Steen has been for the Blues
I didn't even like the trade when it was made. "Trader Cliff's" last move as Leafs GM handed the Blues a core forward for a decade and gave the Leafs squat. What a joke.
I remember playing ball hockey with Alex steen the year before he got traded back when i was 11 or so. He lived right around the corner from me. Was such a nice guy.
I appreciate that you pointed out Steen's all around game, especially defensively. One of the best 2 way players I've ever seen. Not a superstar, but the kind of player every team wants.
That trade was immediately helpful for the Blues. I remember Brad Blues stepping up as the Blues sniper and it kinda left no where for Stempniak, given his play style. So, it almost felt like a way to just let Brad Boyes continue to do his thing, and on top of that Colaiacovo and Boyes had great chemistry on the power play. Steen took a couple seasons to get off the 4th line. He kept getting stuck with Brad Winchester and BJ Crombeen, who had plenty of grit but no puck moving ability. Steen had to really persevere to stay in the league with that lousy situation. To this day, I’m still surprised when I think back to how terrible that line was and how the center of that line will probably have his jersey retired for the Blues.
Steen also turned out to be an incredible team/locker room guy. He selflessly went down to the 4th line last year and that line dominated, especially in the playoffs, and is arguably the most important thing that won the Blues the Cup.
