Interesting fact about TJ Oshie leading up to this tournament was that he actually shot 56.3% at this point in his career. That number was 2nd all-time behind Vyacheslav Kozlov who shot 58.7%. Since then, as Oshie has gotten older, he's fallen off a bit but he was a pioneer of shootout specialism, something we're starting to see more with guys like Zegras and Freddie Gaudreau surprisingly who shoot a career 64.7% and 60% respectively. David Poile putting stock into Oshie is a brilliant move from a GM who's been known to make smart personnel decisions.
As an avid blues fan from St Louis and a kid at the time, remembering what the NHL was like back then makes this even more surreal. Johnathan Quick just went on a tear to win the Stanley Cup, Tarasenko was young and Oshie's teammate, Datsuk was still taking names and bobrovski was at his prime. And then comes Oshie, the man who with the Blues has been the most reliable person for the Blues in shootouts for a few years, but on the International level, nobody knows him, but in St Louis even though hes not our top guy, we all know him. That morning I had a hockey practice at 6 am in creve cour and all I saw was the shootout, but it was an amazing memory seeing TJ Oshie being the man of the hour, the man in St Louis becoming the dude for America that day. I remember watching this live and just being on my feet the whole time. I was new to hockey, didn't know many players, and was in 6 shootout rounds a HUGE fan of TJ Oshie
Kris Kolanski got the Coyotes into eliminations on a shoot out (first time under coach Gretsky). I'm wearing his clothes! His mom fixed me up as in Calgary he's lost some training weight mass! He and his brother both attended Univ. in the USA on full scholarship. He also got Boston College it's first Championship USA and met President Bush. As in soccer, specialists as shoot out artists are rare: all the heat is on YOU to get results.
This is just the ultimate showing of the phrase 'rising to the occasion.' I remember staying up super late to watch this game, and it really was incredible to see Oshie pull that off that many times. It'll live on in my memory forever.
I think it would get really boring seeing the same guys shoot every time in the NHL. This was legendary because of its uniqueness. If the NHL followed this, Oshie would have been shooting every time for the Blues and this wouldn't have been out of the ordinary at all. Also changing the rule would mean we lose shootout moments like the Malik and Schlemko goals, the unlikely heroes coming through for their team. This is a more interesting storyline than "McDavid shoots four times in a row for the tenth time this season to lead the Oilers to win", especially when it can be tough to find storylines in the midst of an 82-game slog.
@@hockey_highlights_and_more I think I like to see a random 3rd line defensive defenseman taking a penalty just for the fact that it is incredibly rare. I’ve seen offensive skill players shoot loads of penalties but what about those guys who really have no business shooting the puck in the first place. It also gives the team with greater depth the advantage so you can’t just have one person able to shoot. It’s more team oriented because everyone has to be good when it comes up.
T.J. Oshie is the reason I fell in love with the Blues, Backes, Stastny, Pietrangelo, and eventually Tarasenko, O'Reilly, Barbashev and now today Thomas and Kyrou are why I stayed. They keep getting players I love to watch. Even if some players leave, they always get more which keeps me hooked.

Didn't Frans have a success percentage of around 48%? I believe he did, and just not with 3 or 4 shots, but with 106 shots 49 goals. TJ has 49 g's on 103 shots. Either of these guys deadliest snipers ever imo.

It's only 1 move. He's not deciding which move before the attempt. He would go 5 hole every time if open. That forces the goalie to cover it and when he does, Oshe goes to the next option. Each move plays off each other, so he reads it.
It's all 1 move and he is reading the goalie. That's the genius of the move. He is in control as long as he reads it correctly and has the skill to execute. It can't be stopped. 5 hole is the first option. The backhand is second. Third is to pull it back across to the forehand. He is reading the balance and footwork of the goalie. He will score 5 hole every time unless the goalie moves to block it. Then he will go 100% for the backhand, but if the goalie makes a good quick move to cover it, he reads that and flows straight to option 3. When the goalie goes hard to cover the backhand his momentum sets up option 3. If the goalie doesn't sell out to stop option 2, then Oshe will score with the backhand.

When the NHL started using Over Times I was not happy about it. I have been a hockey fan from the the mid-60`s when there were but 6 teams and OT happen only in the play-offs. Some of the best games I ever saw were ties. 2 points for a win ,1 for a tie it had work just fine for years.
I think Datsyuk is the greatest shootout guy ever 😊 not necessarily the most accurate, but I loved how he always found something electric, unique, or entertaining move to do ❤
This video randomly got suggested thanks to RUclips. You’re editing of the 3 shots in relation to how he sets up the shots gave me goosebumps. I honestly never noticed how the set ups are nearly identical and at first i thought you just looped the same set up 3 times before you finished it with the ending to all 3 shots. That was so wild.

Team USA from these Olympics have to be one of my faborite teams ever assembled in hockey. Sure they came up a bit short to an ungodly stacked Canada, but it was a helluva effort and tons of fun to watch.

Bob was in a lot of trouble for this shootout going into it. Both Oshie and Kane were on team USA and both played against him 6 times a year in the regular season. Both guys had also made it a habit of embarrassing him in shootouts in the NHL
A problem with the NHL adopting this rule is that if a team has the one player who is so much better than anyone else at the shootout, that team would end up with over-inflated stats based on only one player. Hockey is a team sport. Even if a team has a player better than everyone else, it will not do well if the rest of the players suck. The more depth a team has, the better it will do. That's why the shootout starts with 3 shots by each team before a result is determined. If the NHL allowed teams to use the same player for every shot, they might as well just start with 1 by 1. I actually watched this live, and it was crazy exciting.
Couldn't have happened to n for a better guy... Osh is good a person off the ice as he is on the ice... He watched my son tie a game up n get the ot winner in their barn once... He got to meet him after , n Osh was congratulating him on the game... Most down to earth dude you could meet...
I remember this game. Got up at 6 A.M. after a night out at the bar to watch the USA take on Russia. I'll never forget this moment. This was amazing, but they were over focused on Canada, cause what happened 4 years earlier. They lost that game 1-0, then got blown out by Finland 4-0, and no medal. I ripped the coach for replacing Joe Pavelski with Patrick Kane on the line with Phil Kessel, and James Van Riemsdyk. Those 3 were so productive in the Olympics. Patrick Kane was a champion, a great player, the girl said NO, but for the USA, he always came up short.
My local watering hole got a permit to open at like 530AM so we could all come watch this game. Beers at 6 AM, my first time knowing who Oshie was... It did not disappoint!
With respect to Oshie, he secured his team 1 point in a preliminary game, by going 3x 5-hole... In the end US ended the tournament only in 4th place. Most legendary shootout ever must be Peter Forsberg in Lillehammer 1994 Olympics. He decided the gold medal game for Sweden with a never before seen move. A move that dozens copies after him later on. THAT was legendary.
It was actually Kenta Nillson who did that move before Forsberg. Not in a penalty shot though, but in a breakaway against USA 1989. Forsberg’s penalty shot is still legendary though.

as a LONG TIME FAN of the st louis blues including the full on rebuild in the 2000s i recall all the times oshie hit the ice at scott trade center and made goalies look foolish in shootouts. oshie was always nasty skilled at the shootout. great hands, smooth easy stride, picks a spot and goes for it. we are a long time removed from that now. though we did win a cup in 2019, i think we are far far away from another one. if anything i think we are closer to needing a full on rebuild
Oshie is the man, idc what anyone will ever say. He's a great player with a great head on him, any team is lucky to have a caliber player like him. I honestly wished the Avs woulda picked him up at some point.

Frans Nielsen was and still is my favorite shootout specialist. Goalies KNEW the backhand as coming and they still coudnt stop it

When the NHL started using Over Times I was not happy about it. I have been a hockey fan from the the mid-60`s when there were but 6 teams and OT happen only in the play-offs. Some of the best games I ever saw were ties. 2 points for a win ,1 for a tie it had work just fine for years.

You’re editing of the 3 shots in relation to how he sets up the shots gave me goosebumps. I honestly never noticed how the set ups are nearly identical and at first i thought you just looped the same set up 3 times before you finished it with the ending to all 3 shots.

I was working nights in the oilfield in Wyoming in February when this happened. It energized me for a week.
I watched this live so I was so excited when Oshie was traded to the Caps. The biggest pickup since Ovechkin if you ask me. TJ was huge in winning Washington's first ever Stanley Cup.

Amazing one on one player. Oshie did that against Bob when he was winning those vezina trophys and at his best. On the biggest international stage. He could have easily gone perfect he just missed on those 2 missed attempts..its called a game of inches for a reason..absolute legendary performance regardless..
Team USA from these Olympics have to be one of my faborite teams ever assembled in hockey. Sure they came up a bit short to an ungodly stacked Canada, but it was a helluva effort and tons of fun to watch.

Bob was in a lot of trouble for this shootout going into it. Both Oshie and Kane were on team USA and both played against him 6 times a year in the regular season. Both guys had also made it a habit of embarrassing him in shootouts in the NHL

A problem with the NHL adopting this rule is that if a team has the one player who is so much better than anyone else at the shootout, that team would end up with over-inflated stats based on only one player. Hockey is a team sport. Even if a team has a player better than everyone else, it will not do well if the rest of the players suck. The more depth a team has, the better it will do. That's why the shootout starts with 3 shots by each team before a result is determined. If the NHL allowed teams to use the same player for every shot, they might as well just start with 1 by 1.

I remember this game. Got up at 6 A.M. after a night out at the bar to watch the USA take on Russia. I'll never forget this moment.
This was amazing, but they were over focused on Canada, cause what happened 4 years earlier. They lost that game 1-0, then got blown out by Finland 4-0, and no medal.
I ripped the coach for replacing Joe Pavelski with Patrick Kane on the line with Phil Kessel, and James Van Riemsdyk. Those 3 were so productive in the Olympics.
Patrick Kane was a champion, a great player, the girl said NO, but for the USA, he always came up short.

My local watering hole got a permit to open at like 530AM so we could all come watch this game. Beers at 6 AM, my first time knowing who Oshie was... It did not disappoint!
With respect to Oshie, he secured his team 1 point in a preliminary game, by going 3x 5-hole... In the end US ended the tournament only in 4th place. Most legendary shootout ever must be Peter Forsberg in Lillehammer 1994 Olympics. He decided the gold medal game for Sweden with a never before seen move. A move that dozens copies after him later on. THAT was legendary.
It was actually Kenta Nillson who did that move before Forsberg. Not in a penalty shot though, but in a breakaway against USA 1989. Forsberg’s penalty shot is still legendary though.

as a LONG TIME FAN of the st louis blues including the full on rebuild in the 2000s i recall all the times oshie hit the ice at scott trade center and made goalies look foolish in shootouts. oshie was always nasty skilled at the shootout. great hands, smooth easy stride, picks a spot and goes for it. we are a long time removed from that now. though we did win a cup in 2019, i think we are far far away from another one. if anything i think we are closer to needing a full on rebuild

Oshie is the man, idc what anyone will ever say. He's a great player with a great head on him, any team is lucky to have a caliber player like him. I honestly wished the Avs woulda picked him up at some point.
