in 2019, The San Jose Sharks and The Vegas Golden Knights went head-to-head in game 7. After crawling back from a 3-1 series defecit, San Jose found themselves in a 3-0 hole with 10 minutes left in the game. We break down how one injury, sparked a historic NHL comeback.
As a Knights fan talking to other Knights fans, you have no idea how many times I have referenced this comeback when fans get too cocky. This year in the playoffs and the final, I could not get this loss out of my head. Every game, 10min left in the 3rd I would always think "is this where we fall apart again". Luckily it didn't happen, but this HANDS DOWN is one of the top 5 comebacks in NHL history. We didnt lose cause of the bad call, we lost because we let the bat call rattle us, resulting in the complete collapse of our play style.
i’m a knights fan too and people even just bringing this up makes my blood boil but at least we got our cup
As a Sharks fan, I remember seeing the look on the ice, and it appeared to be a cross check, then a sluefoot, but when I saw the other angle, I thought 5 was a bit much. That being said, I'll never forget Couture's first goal and him shouting, "THATS ONE!" Epic comeback, but the hockey Gods knew better. Pittsburgh killed us, and rightly so. Oh well. One of these days I'll get to see the cup in San Jose.
Coming from a sharks fan… I knew Vegas would win the cup. The team was so focused and let’s be real… this comeback was kinda fluke compared to where we r now 😂😂😂
Shut up you don’t know what pain is.
As a Leafs fan, I have so many memories of this I have a hard time remembering them all lol.
watched this live and remember SCREAMING with joy when this was all going down after EVERY sharks goal. Greatest game of hockey ive ever seen
I remember screaming in anger and disbelief. Lol. We totally fell apart. But I can imagine how happy all you shark fans must have felt
How sad that this is the "greatest [Sharks] game of all time"
This was a great comeback, I am no Sharks fan but those fans love their team and it was great seeing them cheer
yeee baby we bleed teal
Gallant completely lost his cool and control of his bench. Whole team fell apart. He should have called a time out, instead he lost his mind. Gave us all a pretty good meme though, lol.
Oh please. This was all on Cody Eakins

Does it change anything for you when you consider it was the wrong call by the refs...who understandably thought it was a crosscheck to the head?
@@solarion9802Obviously bad calls happen, this one has a massive ripple effect. I know what it’s like, I’m an Ottawa fan. Just this season, a non icing call followed by a puck cover that didn’t seem to count caused us to lose a game we needed to win to make it into the playoffs. However, the Knights did something malicious on this play. Sure, the call was wrong, and it’s unfortunate what came of it, but U think the Sharks would have done it anyways for vengeance.
Absolutely love that most Sharks fan's "favorite moment of all time" was when they benefited from a horrible call and ended up winning a game they had no business winning! Also telling that they rubbed it in VGK fan's faces anytime they could......until June 2023......

As a Sharks fan, I had the absolute best view of the game. Sure I could have been at the arena watching that amazing comeback with the other sharks fans, but I had an all too different view. I was in Vegas for work, just getting out of a dinner with my gloating Vegas office co-workers. It was 3-0, and they were off for a helicopter ride. "No need to watch the rest of the game" they said. It was game 7, I was in it to the end and said, "Ill stay at the casino bar and watch the rest of the game." With my Sharks jersey on, I proceeded to watch the greatest comeback I've ever seen in a sea of opposing fans, whose energy went from loud to quiet over the span of 10 mins. It is truly one of the greatest sporting moments. I never smiled so much from being booed. When the arena let out of the people watching the game on the jumbotron, it was a stroll I'll never forget.
I think it was the WRONG call not a BAD call. Eakin should have gotten some sort of penalty probably minor. But I have not gotten over the fact the other guy(idk his name but the dude that slammed Pavaski down) didn’t get anything. He’s the guy I think should have gotten the 5 minutes and a game misconduct.
Try again without the sharks colored glasses. Pavelski was going down he decided himself, WWE style. Worked too. He has a history of this nonsense.
Stastny was the other (much better) player than Eakin. Both played like diks.
I asked myself what stings more:
1. The 2019 Game 7 meltdown, or.....
2. The Sharks still don't have a Cup, but the Knights do.
Probably the meltdown from Game 7 in the 2019 Playoffs bcos mayb VGK would of had 2 cups by now.

This is why I’m sad, I can’t make fun of the Knights anymore

Sharks fan here. Most comments about the play (including in the video here) question if the crosscheck was a major penalty. To me that was never the issue. The crosscheck was an OK hockey play, and frankly not even penalty-worthy in most circumstances. Instead, while trying to regain his balance from the crosscheck, Pavelski got a second push from another player that forced him back on his head. That was a very dangerous play against a player who could not defend himself, and that was worthy of the 5 minute major. It was a nothing push in most situations, but in that situation, very dangerous. Consequently, the 5 minute major was deserved, but for a combination of the two things, which probably isn't really a penalty, but rule books can't cover every circumstance.
I disagree first the guy who you are attributing the danger to wasn't the one penalized it was the initial contact. 2nd I don't think we should have penalties being called decided by whether a person was injured or not. Even the 2nd hit wasn't that bad guys get hit all the time that are off bal7lanced or not in spots where they can protect themselves. I would be okay with that penalty on the second guy if he was out of control or charging into him but a shove to try to clear space even on someone falling isn't intentionally injuring someone and warrants penalties.
@@TheMetzor True, the penalty was called on the first crosscheck, which (as I mentioned) was not penalty-worthy. (It was technically a penalty, but that's never called in NHL games.) The league does call penalties based on injury on a regular basis, per the written rules. (High sticking, drawing blood, gets you a double minor instead of a single minor.) You may not agree, but it's not out-of-the-ordinary.
The second hit, on its own, was hardly anything, but it was very dangerous in that situation. There was a disregard for another players safety. Additionally, Pavelski was not vulnerable because he was skating with the puck with his head down, or some other action he took on is own. He was made vulnerable because of the actions of the opposing team, and once vulnerable, was injured by additional action from the opposing team. They put him out of the playoffs for a few games. There should be a price to pay for that, or what motivates teams to avoid doing that kind of thing? It's wrong to do that.
It is odd to have a game where players are supposed to be concerned about the safety of another players, yet per the rules, they can deliberately go crashing into each other on purpose. Perfectly legal hits injure guys all the time. It's hard to justify some of that. All that said, Vegas failed the safety test with Pavelski, and they caught a major penalty because of it. Technically, it was called wrong on the ice, but the result was (I think) correct anyhow. Sometimes that's the best you can get.
@@glenmiller1437 By the books they could call infractions almost every 10 seconds. It sucks injuries happen and I do think the refereees need to call blantant ones to stop from retaliation see peitrangelo and dreisatl incident this year. However the play in question weren't called correctly the league even admitted it.
It sucks that Palvaski got hurt on it but do you think they still call either shoves if he gets up right away and isn't injured ? The issue I have is they only made the call because he was injured and not because of what happened. It wasn't player safety issue it was referees not watching the play and thinking something happened that didn't. They then made the mistake on it with no way to correct it. Anytime you have live contact and players making split second decisions you have that risk.
@@TheMetzor I guess I have to go back to my original comment. Rule books can't reasonably cover all circumstances. It was a missed/botched call that got it right in the end (in my opinion) anyhow. I don't know if the play was then (or is now) reviewable, or something a coach can challenge. Maybe that's a good compromise; allowing the refs to take another look with video review. Frankly, I've lost track of where we disagree. I guess it's "injury based" penalties. I think there is a place for it, and you (I think) don't. I feel that way due to player safety. It's like knee on knee hits. That can be career ending. Everything that can reasonably be done to discourage and penalise knee-on-knee should be done. (Even to your argument about it only being injury based... Pavelski didn't have the puck and they pushed him to the ground. That's at least interference. That's a minor, which could have been called.)
@@TheMetzor - the nhl rulebook in effect at that time called for penalties to be called depending upon if a player was injured. The penaly call was correct since it led to injury intent or no intention does not come into consideration.
Prob one of if not the greatest comeback in recent history
Love the ‘22 Blues vs Avalanche game 5 comeback, but yeah not as clutch as the sharks here
Along with the worst call
I wouldn't call it the greatest comeback given the circumstances surrounding it. It was a blown call, giving the Sharks a 5-minute pp. Sure, the Knights should've focused on killing it off, but it was their piss poor response to the call that allowed the Sharks to capitalize on it. The Knights basically gave up. For me personally, the controversy alone (regardless of how you view it) takes away from the comeback a little bit
Lol the reverse sweep against the Sharks by the Kings in 2012 was the best NHL comeback in recent history.
It was both one of the greatest game comebacks of all time, being down 3-0 in goals, and also series comebacks, down 3 games to 1.
The fact that Pavelski was injured on the play makes me not too worried at the 5 minute penalty being the "wrong" call. The refs could have added an attempt to injure penalty, or a double minor, or 2 seperate penalties for cross checks putting the sharks up 5 on 3, etc. It was over the line and uncalled for on the part of the knights.
nothing more beautiful than a team avenging joe pavelski (weird that it’s happened more than once)
Avenging what. Dude fell backwards trying to draw a penalty
Pavelski tends to get injured in the playoffs from clean hits.
The follow-through from Stasny on the Pavelski hit was pretty brutal. If anything they just got the wrong guy.
That's what I was thinking.
Absolutely! Pavelski got injured because Stasny took him 'down' while he was defenseless in the air causing him to slam his head on the ice. Not from the initial check. That action by Stansny warrants the 5min penalty in my book.
As a die hard Golden Knights fan, we blew the lead. Massive respect to the Sharks, they earned this win. This is just a reminder to never give up, and don't ever be too overconfident when anything happens. It stings.
a little disingenuous to downplay the severity of the injury on pavelski. I feel like you had plenty of time to give it more attention.
I was at that sharks game 7 game. Best hockey night of my life. The crowd so electric in that final 10 mins and OT
I forever regret not buying those fucking tickets for me n pop🤦♂️
This is one of my favourite game 7s in nhl history. The voice of goes miller makes it even more chilling and adds to the hype.
Watched this game as a sharks fan I couldn’t believe it though we were done for. That run was crazy we got lucky against the Avs as well.
This was not bad officiating. This was another dirty play from Vegas that they didn't expect to get called on due to bad officiating in the pass
I was there in the tank for that game. We still had hope and when Pavs went down the entire arena was dead silent. I don’t think anyone in that arena thought we would make a comeback but once we scored one, there was lightning in everyone. It was one of the best experiences in my life to watch them tie it and head into sudden death and win it.
Playoff hockey is like nothing else but this? This was out of this world and I think about it often.
On the officiating side:
It was still a Major penalty. Not on Cody Eakin, but on the guy that slammed pavelski’s head into the ice afterwards. Maybe don’t slam opponents headfirst into the ice if you want to win a playoffs series🤷♂️
Seriously all this whining about a “bad call” as if cross checking someone and slamming them onto the ice intentionally isn’t a major penalty lmao. In what world is that not a 5 min major?
I remember watching this with my roommate from Oakland and we were literally jumping and screaming for every sharks goal
That call pretty much ended Eakin's NHL career, too. Prior to that, he had 222 career points over parts of nine seasons in the NHL, along with 19 career playoff points.
His total in three NHL seasons after that? 34 points, none in the playoffs.
He's currently playing for the SCL Tigers over in Switzerland.
Goodrow had sat almost all of the 3rd period and OT. Sharks coach pete deboer would shorten his bench early if they were down or only ahead by one. While most the skaters were feeling the effects of fatigue for extended minutes, Goodrow was completely fresh. The burst of speed along from the attacker with the weak stick check from a tired defender tell it all.
refs are human. they will make mistakes. you have to accept that. then you have to kill off the penalty. if they get one, so be it you have a 3 goal lead. they gave up 4 goals. that's not on the refs that's on Vagas.
I feel the same way about this call as the Saints/Rams Pass Interference missed call a few years ago. The Refs didn't make Brees throw that Interception in Overtime. The Refs didnt let the Rams drive down the field in less than 2 minutes to tie the game. Is anyone mentioning that missed facemask call on Goff which would have given the Rams 1st and goal at like the 1 yard line (missed call resulted in a field goal instead of a TD on that play.) Shit happens in sports. You get blessed and screwed over sometimes. Good teams overcome it.

I always think of the hit on Pierre Turgeons that immediately ended the 1993 Islanders story book playoff run. The Islanders had just beat the reigning champ Penguins in seven games in a legendary series. Overcoming prime Lemiuex, Jagr etc...But after that Turgeon hit despite the Islanders best efforts it became obvious they weren’t the same team anymore. That series was all but over after the first game. It was such a dirty and uncalled for hit as well. The worst way to decide a playoff series like that. Even if I wasn’t an Islanders fan no way I would ever forget that
I smiled the entire time while watching this video
Knights only had to blame themselves. 4 goals in 10 min, ouch
That is still crosschecking, ruslting in an injury, a double minor. You see the issue is: If the stick had hit Pavelski in the face, that would have been High Sticking, resulting in an injury, 5 min major and game misconduct. Crosschecking doesnt have to be in the face. It can be on the KNEE or anywhere else. High Sticking is always in the FACE, that's why there are two rules, not just one.
So, even a crosscheck that isn't to the face CAN be a 5 minute major and game misconduct: The ref has the right to determine the length of the penalties.
That was a dirty play by Eakin, and since the puck wasnt present at the time, it was also INTERFERENCE which can result in a 5 minute major, because it caused injury.
The old rule said crosschecking is defined as both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the ice. They removed that line and just call it when they feel like it, which is next to never. Darien Hatcher was an expert at legal crosschecking and used the technique to keep the front of his net clear without getting called for crosschecking, because he kept the blade of his stick on the ice.
The refs actually READ the rulebook, most players/coaches do not.
2018/2019 NHL Rulebook
59.3 Major Penalty - A major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player who “cross checks” an opponent (see 59.5)
59.5 Game Misconduct Penalty - When a major penalty is assessed for cross-checking, an automatic game misconduct penalty shall be imposed on the offending player.
I think it's like the old saying pride comes before a fall, the Vegas Knights thought they were the best and could win the 7th game with ease. However, their careless attitude toward their opponents safety caused a shocking powerplay epilogue that very few would have liked to see except the San Jose Sharks and they defiantly picked up the pace and wrecked them.
It's an illegal hit no matter what. Eakin cross checked pavelski into his other man causing that dude to decide to shove him farther for more impact. The play started from eakin, therefore ended with his game misconduct.
Vegas lost, so they got a rule change. That's all I heard there. And this years was the worst officiating in the playoffs ever. Ands Vegas won. hmmm... And you wonder why people think it was rigged.
My family and I were only watching this game because we are die hard Avalanche fans and new this was the game that would tell us who we played.
This is one of those plays where even though there may not have been a cross-checking penalty, Pavelski's head got smashed into the ice because of 2 Knights players. It's hard to say that shouldn't award a major penalty imo, even though it was not Eakin and probably not intentional on Stastny. But I saw it as along the lines of hitting a defenseless receiver in the NFL.
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the call if replays were in play. It was a cross check resulting in injury, which is a major penalty. The question would be on intent, but he was targeted by two players. I side with the refs. Also, not a sharks fan, not a knights fan, just a hockey fan with no dog in this fight.
Intent has nothing to do with it.

Yes. This wasn't just the best comeback, but arguably the best game in NHL history. Just an absolutely crazy game
I'm a Sharks fan and I still remember getting so frustrated by the third Vegas goal that I turned my TV off, only to get an incredulous text ten minutes later asking if I'd seen what the Sharks had done. From then on, I've refused to give in to the frustration because that moment showed me just how quickly everything can turn around in hockey.
It's only a blown call because the wrong player was penalized. It was the Vegas player who threw an off balanced, completely vulnerable Sharks player to the ice that should have been called. No one cares a player was injured being bodily shoved to the ice. As for the worst call in playoff history, that would be the non-call for Brett Hull's skate in the crease for the Stanley cup winning goal. The NHL changed that rule as well.
Rule 9.2: "A Major penalty and Game Misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the referee, based on the degree of violence of impact, may be assessed to any player who cross-checks an opponent." Its from the hockey canada rule book but even though it's not to the head it's still a high and very aggresive cross check that results in an injury so the ref has to call that a major
yes that was dangerous and caused Pavelskie's head to hit the ice. the first crosscheck was totally unnecessary but the NHL is inconsistent on enforcement, if Pavelskie doesn't get hurt it probably would have been a no call. Pavelskie was kind of unprepared for the first crosscheck so the "clean/legal" crosscheck led to a bad situation

I’m going to see so many of “should’ve killed the penalty” and I understand that. Completely changed the outcome of the game.
bad call or not you should not allow four goals in five minutes if you do you deserve to lose.
Hate to say it at best it’s a double minor as a clear cross check can’t be erased and 50/50 on he’d hit with second knights player or interference as there is no clear intention to avoid the hit and at worst the interference call I mentioned it taken at hitting a vulnerable player and can be a 5 and a game anyways with an additional cross checking penalty.
I remember going from omg this is over to a small smile after the first 2 goals . The 3rd got me so excited that on the 4th goal I jumped up off my recliner so fast that i pulled a muscle in my back and had to go on the IR for 2 weeks! Lmao.. what a game that was😊

It’s funny because if this comeback didn’t happen and the sharks just scored maybe 0 or 1 goals and still lost the game then this rule would’ve never been implemented, it’s only because the sharks capitalized big time
For a historical video consider researching Mario Lemieux average goals and assists per game calculated as if he played full seasons for his first 13 seasons, then tally the number for his career. His points tally if he had played full seasons will blow your mind. Also look at who his line mates were prior to Coffey arriving.
I only suggest this to you because you make the best NHL videos and the hockey world really needs to know just how good he was. Who better than you to present it!
Here is a clue - it's easily well over 1000 goals and 2000 assists for his career.

There was no need for Eakin to cross check him in the first place. Your up 3 goals with 10 minutes left, why are you cross checking off of the face off?
Even if it was the wrong call. If he doesn't cross check him, all this never happens.

Up to this Point the Players and officials dideverything they could, the Problem came from a single source, a weak Rulebook
Posting this now after seeing where the Golden Knights are vs where the Sharks are is crazy. And that’s coming from a sharks fan…
Sometimes there really is poetic justice...in sports at least
In hindsight, that should have been a 2 minute minor for cross checking on Eakin at worst, but I don't think Stastny should have gotten anything. steve Dangle went over this during his Dang-its vids back in the day, and he said the refs just needed to look up at the Jumbotron to see the play. That doesn't excuse the Knights' poor defensive structure or the coach not calling a timeout after the first goal during that lengthy power play, but it would have given the refs a better look at what exactly happened. If it was just a 2 minute power play, San Jose gets only one power play goal and probably doesn't tie it up by the end of regulation. We'll never know for sure how the game would have played out if that was the result instead of a 5 minute major and both teams being short a player for the remainder of the game.
You might expect to give up 1, possibly 2, goals on a 5 min penalty. A bummer, especially if you’re innocent, but if you give up 4 the loss is your own fault no matter how bad the call was. They fell apart mentally.
I point to this game, among others, as to why Marc-Andre Fleury should not be an Hall of Famer. Two of his three Cup wins were also with him on the bench as well.
Fleury kept the 2016 Penguins in the playoffs so he deserved that one for sure. Good goalie, but a bit of dik on the ice, seems like a nice guy off the ice.
hey, as a fan of the game for over 60 years I really hate to hear the " if" word. If this had happen , if that didn`t happen, if the ref made the right call. Get over it, the game played out the way it did. The ref is a human just like the skaters He wants to get his calls right. It is a hard hitting fast game. let the dude play....drop the puck
I'm a lifetime Sharks fan and agree it was a bad call. Regardless, Vegas let in 4 power-play goals and inevitably lost in overtime. I was in Vegas wearing my Sharks shirt that year when they were down 3-1 in the series. I remember telling a cocky Golden Knights fan that it's never over until the final buzzer! All-in-all it was a great series that could have gone either way!
Welp. As a "captain" in my work. I know my bros under me would be all about fighting back harder with emotion and they do especially if I do as often get hurt. Bad calls in my job certainly. But hell, I'd be ruled by adrenaline and emotion after seeing my captain go down.
Best night of hockey I’ve ever witnessed in my life.
Horrible officiating my ass… When you said that the cross check that Cody Eakin did shouldn’t have been a penalty I instantly knew you were a golden knights fan
Where did he say that it shouldn't have been a penalty at all, genius? He said it shouldn't have been a 5 minute major, which it objectively wasn't.

The fact that now this wouldn’t be considered a penalty is insane. You purposefully and willfully serious injury another play by being thoughtless. It absolutely deserves a 5min major given the conduct easily could have been life changing.
I will note throughout the series there was absolutely terrible refereeing which affected multiple games previously.
U knew it was going to be huge when Logan Culture went to the bench saying “that’s one”
At the end of the day, VGK got a cup, and the Sharks still dream of getting one.
Dont get too Happy Eventually VGK are gonna suck one Day(and dats gonna b a good day for me🤣).Thats what Happens when team win the cup.Look at Chicago.
@@jerms6667 Well..until that day comes, I'll be happy☺ The only thing not happy is my wallet, buying all the championship gear.😁
@@jerms6667and the sharks will still be a poverty franchise when chicago bounces back

good call by the refs but only because it was against vegas

The crosscheck would have been a minor. It still wouldn't have changed the game like the major did.
As a long time Dallas Stars fan, anytime the Knights lose, I love it. Kind of hated that Eakin took the blame for such a brutal hit on Pavs, though. If you LOOK at the hit, it's really Paul Stastny who does the real damage. Eakin cross-checks Pavs sure enough, but when he's losing his balance and still has a skate on the ice, Stastny lays into him and shoves him straight down causing the damage to his head. Karma's a straight-up B****. PS should be watching his back. Oh, and I was at a Stars game on New Years' Eve several years ago against the Blackhawks where Dallas came back and won 5 - 4 after being down 4 - 1 going into the 3rd period. Wasn't a playoff game, but it was one of the most electric atmospheres ever, and the fact that there was a fight less than a minute into the opening period didn't hurt.
I don't agree with that shove, dirty play on behalf of the Golden Knights and I'm a knights fan
Screw the knights. Their fan base is so arrogant. Great comeback
this game was crazy tp watch
I thought he just fell on the ice awkwardly and the refs called it because he got injured I remember watching thinking how was that even allowed.he was already injured and his face shield open up his cut
So while I agree Eakin didn’t deserve a 5 minute major, there’s no way Pavelski getting tossed head first into the ice isn’t a penalty
Sharks schooled those cocky GKs. So satisfying
it was a game changer!! not very often do you have a rule changing moment and its was a fun game.
the oilers in the 80s made a major penaty rule change too cover that one ? Gretzky rule
I mean bad call or not it was clearly a penalty shouldn’t have been major but if ur making that kind of play at a face off in front of the ref this deserves to happen

Still pissed but , I will say that it helps a little now that we have the Cup
This is proof that shitty reffing alters the course of the entire game, playoffs etc
BRUTAL in the title, no explanation of the injury? I’m lost
Let's not forget Pavelski's face was like a smashed pumpkin from taking a slap shot puck from his own guy - Burns - right in the face earlier in the series......so the ref freaked out when he started leaking
That is the first thing I thought of when this video popped up I don't know why it wasn't mentioned if Pavelski didn't take the puck to the face none of this would have happened
PaFELLski --- dude seems to get destroyed every postseason to make his opponents pay. Engelland was directly to blame for every loss starting with Game 5. I believe he was on the ice for every goal SJ scored when making each comeback. -- but enjoy the participation trophy for a good comeback. A shame the Blues absolutely PUNISHED the Sharks later down the road.

As a Knights fan I couldn’t care one bit about this game anyone Knights are the Champions before those damn Sharks before we become the champions I avoided this conversation as much as possible this game was ….. brutal
Some cannot even enjoy success without being pi§§y?
You might have won a cup but the sharks will still EARN a cup long before you. Can’t imagine routing for a team handed literally everything on a golden platter
poor goalie he didn't do nothin, we see how angry he is at himself
