    • @ericpeticca55

That's cause Bob has ice in his veins. He may not practice the hardest in the nhl, he may not eat the best but when the pressure is at its highest Bob is not only unfazed but seems to answer and play even better. It's an intangible that most goalies don't have and it's not something you can teach.

Happens in soccer as well. When the giants of the first league and internationally feared from everyone, gets beaten by a team from a trophy cup that is from the 3rd league.
The 3rd league teams only have stadiums with a couple of thousand of fans in their "stadium" while the big teams get up to 60 or even 90 thousands.
The difference in strength and money is so staggering you wouldnt believe it.

I love this story. There was no Presidents trophy curse. That was Torts! He had a lot to do with building that Tampa winning machine. He knew how to take it apart!
It's useful in reminding new fans that there's really no such thing as a curse on the Presidents trophy. There's dormant talent all over the NHL, simply waiting for an opportunity.
Coaches like Tortorella are worse than that supposed "curse"!
Got to give props to Nick foligno for captaining that team.
    Poor Vassey.
But hey, my team had an opportunity that year cuz Tampa was eliminated, and they blew it again st. Louis! Golden opportunity to steal a cup from Tampa thanks to Torts... And the Bruins blew it! He opened the door for the Bruins to walk right through and we tripped!
My B's also did a version of this back in 1971, new coach Tom Johnson set a franchise record for most winning regular season.
    # 1 team,
    shoe-in for the cup.
First round -Went down to the most miserable Habs team to squeak into the last wild-card spot
    🙄
Then 48 years later, my team did it again!
broke their own franchise record while setting the NHL record for most winning regular-season
Went all in on the cup, then went down first round to the Florida Panthers!
    😮
    Shytt happens!
But after the 1971 failure, 1972 the humiliated big bad Bruins, big ole chip on their collective shoulder, came out to play and got themselves a 1972 cup! 😆
It's okay that history repeats itself.
    For certain teams
    🐻🏆
We just got to figure out a way to avoid the real curse -Torts.

Saying that the biggest upset in NHL history isn't the team setting a regular season record getting upset in the first round is a pretty bold statement. At least Boston made it to game 7.

Arguably the greatest moment in franchise history, yes it's not a Stanley Cup, yes we got knocked out the very next round. But the sheer improbability for the Jackets to not only win the series but SWEEP is incredible

I would argue this is what propelled Tampa to become so much greater and consistent year after year. Sometime you need these kinds of humiliation and lessons to become champions..
In some weird way, this was the best thing that happened for Tampa.
You learn so much more about your team from the defeat than from victory.

After this series lost, I didnt go to a single home game or watch any game on tv. Only listened to Esposito on the radio. 3 finals and 2 cups later(also made it in the newspaper about my superstition) I’m glad this happened… haha

Your always in it with torts since he was with Tampa he lived to be the underdog and his play style show it as well. Gritty dirty dump and chase play and getting the most of his players. Much love to torts and best of luck in Philly

Great video. I still think the Islanders over the Penguins in 1993 is the biggest upset in NHL history though.

I love looking at this in a phycological way….. you have the Tampa Bay lightning that cruised into the playoffs, they weren’t playing hard they weren’t fighting for wins. Then on the other side, you have Columbus, who fought for every inch to get into the playoffs and we’re playing probably the best hockey of their season. Simply put Tampa Bay not switch into that fight gear fast enough and ended up getting swept.

Bob IS sole reason for both the Blue Jackets and Panthers went this far in the playoffs. You remove him from the equation and both teams don't go past 1st round.

My father is scaringly good at predicting games and series, the second David Savard scored, he just looked at me and said the jackets would win the series.

The wall. Tampa hit the wall. The same wall that boston, toronto and carolina hit in the 2023 playoffs. They didn't do their homework it looks like.

As a hawks fan I’m very pleasantly surprised with Nick Foligno. He’s a natural leader and can score the greasy goals. He’s gonna be wearing the C for Chicago next year. Mark my words. Dickinson and Jones get the A unless Bedard earns it.

This was the peak of being a Blue Jackets fan. Maybe someday we'll get rid of Jarmo and actually put together a decent team, but until then we've got the memories of this playoff series to keep us warm.

That's why the NHL is the most entertaining of the leagues. Injury reserved shenanigans apart, of course.
