In 2016, NHL fans got the opportunity to vote WHOEVER they wanted into the NHL All-Star Game. That would lead them to vote in enforcer John Scott. What would happen next would go down as one of the greatest moments in NHL all star game history.

"Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?"
I bet they are.
Absolutely. He showed his kids (and the hockey world) what it means to be able to laugh at yourself while still maintaining dignity and not caving under pressure from power. I don't remember any of the other ASGs, but I doubt I'll forget this one.
He's got 7 so the odds are in his favor one would be proud. Besides, he deserved to be there. It's a short break in a grind of a season to take it easy and have a bit of fun, it's not the Hall of Fame.
should've never brought up his kids. that's where they messed up
hell of a thing to say to a man. good for him, and it's a wonderful story.
yessirrrr
when the entire nhl fanbase/community came together to give betman the middle finger
Too late now but for next year the community needs to put someone that’s under the radar but deserving into the all-star game.
I don’t understand why the league executives want to mess with a game that is so perfect. Why tinker with it? Why fight the fans giving a dying breed of players a final wonderful send off?
@@jameshetu6885 100% agree
Betman has always felt like he was at the least, not a fan of my hometown Red Wings and at most, an enemy of fans league wide.
It’s a bit of a “fuck you” to the All Star game too, which is a big joke and waste of time these days.
look at the man smile at that ASG... he 100% deserved the love and i'm so happy for him that he got to experience that high before the end of his career.
Not just him everyone around him.
I loved the John Scott All Star game. I voted for him and don’t regret it at all. One of the most memorable ASG’s.
Same here. That was the last time the ASG was genuinely entertaining. Tried tuning in for a couple more after, haven’t bothered watching since 2018.
@@poejavelski148 100% Agreed.
Best thing to ever happen to an All Star Game!
This was one of my favorite NHL moments. The league should have just embraced it from the beginning. Fuck Bettman and all the haters.
John Scott was the perfect character for it too. Him pretending to get in a fight with Patrick Kane was great. He knew it was all for a laugh and he leaned into the joke perfectly.
I love that, Scott and Kaner "dropping the gloves" when they were both smiling ear to ear.
So frickin hilarious😂
Clickbait much
Had more fun watching scott in that 3on3 than I have watching any other ASG.
Exactly. At least he gave it his all, and that's why it was so good. ASGs suck because nobody is trying. I think the NHL should have embraced something like this for ASGs going forward, letting the fans vote on their favorite "character guy" to be a captain. Give those players who work hard every minute even if they don't have big roles a chance to shine. Still, the John Scott ASG was the best one I've ever watched in 30+ years, and I'm so happy he wasn't bullied out of it.
@@captbloodbeard I completely agree. We see so much of the great players throughout the league, and while they are fine, it would be better to see the journeyman NHL'ers get their turn in the spotlight.
I was a goalie. Went to a random summer drop-in game - I was 16 or 17 years old. For some reason, John Scott was there. He took one shot, a simple wrister from the top of the circle and hit me on the inside of my arm, underneath the pad. It was the single hardest shot I had ever faced (left a major bruise on my arm) and it was a throwaway shot from him. He was a great guy the entire game and took a picture with me afterwards. He was a great guy to be around - it was around the time described in this video.
I think people dont realize how great of a player he still is. NHL is just crazy good
Just a reminder that the worst AHL player is probably better than anyone you are likely to encounter outside the league, and it is not even close.
@@smackx1486khl and shl players are around the same quality and I see some shl guys walking on the street all the time, I doubt I would ever be able to play against any of them though
Those shots that miss the padding are the worst. I had to wear lacrosse knee guards under my leg pads because I kept getting hit on my bare kneecap. Gotta love being a goalie.
Brian Scalabrine was a below average NBA player that once said referring to people talking trash online "I'm closer to Lebron, than you are to me". And it was true.
Patrick kane’s face says everything when he dropped the gloves, he was loving it lol
That and before Kaner gets announced he turns to Scott and says, “watch they’re going to boo me.” Which they do and Scott loses it.
Being only +/- -19 career is kinda impressive for a enforcer.
I will say this: when he came to San Jose in 2014, he got some normal 4th line ice time, and he wasn't half bad as a 4th liner. IIRC he scored 3 goals in the 2014-15 season, which was 3 more than I expected from him. And the team loved him.
@@TheSimianDeity Yeah, he seemed universally beloved wherever he played, really adds to the heart of this story. Couldn't have happened to a better guy.
You can’t get a minus from the penalty box 🤣
@@murdamitten9259then its still impressive that he accumulated 19 😂
Remember that. Didn't he actually score 2 goals in the few games? @@TheSimianDeity
"Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?"
F**k yeah I do.
The Jon Scott story is great. Despite the powers that be trying to elbow him out. They should of embraced it. Always a good program on Hockey Psychology, thanks
I don't know why they thought his kids wouldn't be proud. They probably still bring it up to their friends all the time
The best all-star story ever! 😂 So happy that NHL heads failed to force him to drop out 😂
Last All Star game I watched too
John Scott is the only memorable thing that's happened in the ASG since I started following the NHL in the early 2000's
Ovis old shoot out ones were pretty great to be fair 😂the Canadian flag, straw hat and the shades is iconic
This channel is so addicting
Truth
Great channel, awesome programs
best hockey channel right now
Literally
Yes
The NHL is missing out on a big opportunity with not having a "John Scott" spot in the All-star game.
Hells ya!
great idea!
That would be amazing! That would be for everyone that did the grind trying to get to the nhl. Kind of like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for beer leaguers.
**votes for Kurtis MacDermid immediately**
they don't even have a John Scott spot in the regular season anymore. there are no enforcers.
I think a lot of us can say we would be pissed if we were asked,”Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?”
That is a down right dirty thing to say to a father.
Left out that he wasn't an option for MVP voting but write ins gave it to him anyway! Crazy story
He really was the MVP. Should have picked up the hat trick in that one game also.
After thr All Star game, John's NHL career amounted to a single game for Montreal with 9:01 of ice time, and 2 minutes in the penalty box.
What the NHL failed to understand is that John Scott on that moment represented the fans in a why that a guy like Conor McDavid never can. He was a guy that wasn't fortunate enough to be born with generational talent. He was a guy who had to fight for every minute he could get. And so, he was a proxy for the dreams of the common fan. The dream of regular perosn having a chance to lace up the skates with the best and simply have fun with the best in the world and feel like you are accepted.
I'm very glad for him, and also for the superstars who got a reminder of how special it is to play at that level.
Much like another video pointed out, even the worst player in the NHL is orders of magnitude more skilled than the average beer leaguer. Best ASG in history, it had heroes, villains, laughter, tears. Just beautiful
almost brought a tear to my eye 😅
Liar! I see the waterworks…… Just let it out man…… let it all out for John Scott……
Hockey fans gave him the best moment of his playing career. You can totally tell by his face how happy he was that weekend. Such a great story!
This was by far my most favorite NHL moment of all time. Like the community, the players, everyone went up against the League and owners.
He looked so happy, good for him
You could tell he was really enjoying himself and cherished that moment. I hadn't heard about this story but loved it, awesome content!
Of all the All-Star games I've seen, this one remains the best one. I don't know if it's because how great it was to see Johnny Scott out there, the fact that it was the first All-Star game with the 3-on-3, or both, but whatever it was, this is the BEST All-Star game I've witnessed.
I remember that like it was yesterady. It was the only All-Star game competition and game I had watched since the mid-2000s, and remains the last I'll probably ever watch. Scott totally stole the show. And the fans in the building were cheering for Scott the entire night. What the league tried to do is just an example of how old and out of touch they are with the fans.
I’ve watched nearly every All star game for the last 16ish years and this is one of the only games I actually vividly remember and get happy when I randomly remember it or it gets brought up. John Scott is a Beaut
This was one of my favourite hockey moments ever. That was pure love of the game you could see from him. Glad the NHL didn’t screw him on the end. Would love to see John go on to announce for the Allstar game.
There’s a Radiolab podcast on John Scott called “The Punchline” and it is the best podcast I have ever listened to.
I honestly forgot about this guy and remembered me and my dad laughing about this, good times. what a goat
Havent followed NHL for long, had no idea this happened what a great story
Just when I think you have nothing left to talk about, you find this. Well done.
Seeing the smile on his face the entire time makes this awsome.
I think Scott was the happiest player we have ever seen and probably will ever see at an all-star game.
I remember being apart of the online coordination for voting man, those were such fun times. NHL needed to learn when you give fans an in
That line-up of captains for the all-star game was crazy. 3 of them are guaranteed hall of famers, and Patrick Kane is pretty good too!
saw the title & knew this would be a banger, was absolutely not disappointed. knocked it outta the park again. awesome storytelling all building up to the chills/tears/goosebump moment at the end. nearly had all three this time lol unreal channel
What a beloved moment by all. Rare in the hockey world.
This story just fills me with happiness no matter how many times I hear it. Gotta love the guy. Look how much fun he had! How could they have tried to stop him?
I will always smile, clap, and tear up a bit for John Scott's MVP announcement.
that was the first all star game i watching in probably ten years and i havent watched another since. The best
Same here. Last one I felt the need to watch
such a great story! thank you for another awesome upload
ibid
I was in the military during this and I had to miss it. I wish I could've been a part of it and the voting back then. Such a heartwarming story.
The articles said he was exiled to St John's. But they didn't mention the instant love he got here. He was instantly embraced as "ours" an underdog that got everyone on the island cheering and rooting for him
This channel is just the best. This level of storytelling is so satisfying. Perfeclty synthesizing the twist and shift of a great human being in 8 wondurful minutes
I love this channel. The way you story tell and break down hockey at the same time is amazing. The whole time Scott was playing i had a smile on my face. It felt so good to cheer for the underdog and you illustrated that beautifully. Keep up the great videos!
I had the biggest smile 😁 on my face watching this! Thanks, and thanks to the fans!
Bro, this made me cry.
He got my vote. It was fantastic to see the look of pure joy on his face!
I never watch the ASG but I watched this one, and it was awesome.
Keep these great stories coming. Love all the historical pieces.
super narration by HP; you told this story really well
That's a great story I had never heard about, great video!
Power to the people. That's incredible!
Thanks for the video this was an entertaining treat to listen to.
This video brought a smile to my face.
Thank you!
This was one of my favourite hockey moments in my 30+ years of watching
I was at that game and still remember the John Scott chants
I had no idea about this...probably one of the best NHL moments ever. Great upload as always bro !
Thanks for this. That was great. So good. Cheers.
HIS KIDS ARE DAMN PROUD OF DAD
Had no idea about this as I wasn't really following NHL back than but you love to see this. Great moment
This video warms my heart. Thanks so much (and thanks John Scott)
honestly a beautiful legendary moment. i will never forget this
Years and years from now when there is some exposé on the NHL was like during 2010 - 2020 and they interview a bunch of elite players from that time. I bet they will mention the 2016 all Star game as their favorite one they ever played in.
Awesome video, great story, amazing channel.
Great Video, the NHL needs to have more fun and this was exactly what it needed.
Thanks. I needed this video today.
How can you not smile watching him in that game
What a wonderful story! Hockey magic! Thank you
After watching that sorry display by Kucherov at the 2024 all star skills challenge this is a welcome reminder of guys who get it and appreciate the moment.
someone that was truly proud to be there, didnt see it as a joke, and had a point to prove, the entire fan base, and player base backed him, and created something beautiful.
best hockey channel of all time. to the point, informative, logical, editing and so on is unmatched. morgan freeman narration of hockey
Definitely a good flashback. Way back machine no visor. The 23-24 season has seen a major increase in fighting. Including line brawls.
This is why I love sport ! Amazing video and what a great story 🙌🏻
This was the last time the All-Star game was worth watching.
Certainly the most beautiful things that ever happened in the NHL. The players thoroughly enjoyed it. What a story!
awesome heartwarming episode!!!
Man that tussle between him and Kane is so wholesome
Even Habs GM at the time, Bergevin, said it was a trade he had to make and he could not get into why.
i love how initially he was all modest and nervous and even hoped they wouldn’t vote him in but then when the NHL heads specifically asked him to bow out he was like hell no 🤣 that’s human psychology for ya - the harder you try to make something not happen the more likely it is to occur 😂
What an awesome story. Good for John.
Good on you Mr. Scott, class act!
The picture of Scott being lifted up by Burns and Gio is one of my all time favourites
Man this made me smile lol perfectly put together video💪🏼
Thank you
This is one of the best stories in hockey! Love it :)
This video literally made me cry! What’s a game what a sport what amazing fans! Wow
I loved that year's all star game. It was so much fun.
Chills… You can literally feel his happiness rewatching these videos.
The best all star weekend I watched. The NHL needs to go back to this if they want the viewership…
He was only -19?
Incredible numbers for a pure enforcer, even with very limited minutes.
Great content!
I think one thing that gets overlooked is the other players at the all-star game embraced it and supported John Scott. They could have easily just gone through the motions with him there but they all rallied around him and made some truly awesome moments, that's what makes it really special. It was kind of like a thank you to all the enforcers who had ever played in the NHL from the fans and the star players.
really mostly one player, superstar former teammate, but such an important and respected one it set the tone
I remember not knowing who he was but voting for him that year. Stopped my vacation to watch that all star game and it's the most I've ever been in love with hockey. Such a special weekend, everything about it was so pure and so incredible to watch unfold.
Thanks for this - I smiled for 8 minutes!😊
I was so waiting for this video for a while
Great moment. His smile is very infectious. MVP MVP MVP.
What a moment. Amazing I remember watching it on TV.
That’s a great story. Embarrassing that the NHL tried to undermine the fans like that.
