In 1993, The Toronto Maple Leafs & The LA Kings faced off in the conference finals to determine who would meet the Montreal Canadiens for the Stanley Cup. In that series, we learned what happens when Wayne Gretzky breaks the rules, and gets away with it.

Personally, when I see this, I see an accident. He took the shot, he was watching where the puck went, and his stick on the recoil hit the player's skate--instinctively/reactively, he moved his stick to avoid tripping the player, and it unfortunately caught him right in the face. That's how I read the play. I don't see any intent to 'stop the player from getting to the puck.'
But hey, maybe I'm wrong. Playoff hockey is pretty cutthroat.

Like my minor hockey league coach always said. if you try and say that 1 call was the reason you lost you aren't very good at analyzing a game because every single game has tons of missed calls both ways. Its part of having humans as referees, their will be some missed calls.
That's not the point. If you don't think the league wanted their greatest player of all time in the final, idk what to say. It's a game of inches. If one team gets the benefit of the doubt over another team they're even with, they'll usually come out on top. And that's what happened.
Generally true, however, this missed call would have put the best player of all time (arguably) out of the game in a close game. Your minor hockey league coach wasn't up against the literal best hockey player. Some calls have more impact than others.

Except all season the calls were made even if the ref didn't see it as long as there was blood.
Breaking the rules, that is more like a non call from the ref that didn't see what happened. Honestly, the league went to two refs and they can't even see everything despite being able to see more.
They weren't going to kick Gretzky out of the game and give the Leafs a PP in OT on a deciding game. It just wasn't going to happen, which is why he got away with it

exactly. sounds more like sour grapes to me. how many missed calls were there back in the one-ref days? if Fraser said he didnt see it, and the LINESMEN didnt see it, then they didnt see it. 'breaking the rules' like it was some flagrant violation. if you get clipped by a guy going for the puck, ya get clipped. sucks there wasnt a call but sometimes life sucks...

Unfortunately, sports is full of shoulda, woulda, coulda. It was definitely a blown call, but it is what it is.
It just adds to the legend of the NHL playoffs. Things would be so boring if things like this didn't happen. There would be nothing to argue about and nothing to make excuses about. What fun would that be?

It's not about a conspiracy. It's about the fact that Toronto was 1 game away from eliminating the Kings. There was no way they were going to call a penalty on Gretzky, which would of sent him packing and given the Leafs a PP in OT. If it had been any other Kings player with the high stick, there's a good chance it would of been called, but not on Gretzky, especially in that particular situation

Gilmour was a human skeleton and Wendel was hurting badly after going 7 games in every series they played. Toronto D was average. Wasn't happening, especially with 33 in net, he was dialed in.

I can see how 1-2 refs could not have seen with people moving around and maybe looking at the puck/ off puck/ whatever else… but damn all three missing this. I find that strange…. But as someone who plays box lacrosse & just watch hockey casually… some shit just gets missed but damn…

3:48 btw, there was no glass at Maple Leaf Gardens. The player's benches were literally just that. Benches. No stanchions to separate the players from the crowd. So when Burns went from his area, he literally walked the aisle where people were going to their seats, and literally could have got in the Kings' coach's face had he not been held back. In fact, crowd members could actually walk by and say things to players as they walked by, but somehow, everyone respected that the players and coaches were working. Hockey culture, I guess?

Not a Leafs fan but Fraser & crew really blew that call. Gilmour is dripping blood but no call? I can still see that moron McSorley playing with that curved stick so late in game 2 of the finals. Lots of fans thought that was a cheap call by Demers, it was genius! Rest in peace Pat Burns.
That stick call was super cheap & the hockey gods listened. That was the turning point
There were a helluva lot more missed calls in that series than Wayne's high stick. A missed call at the beginning of a game can change the whole game so it doesn't matter if it's a missed late call in a tie game or one in the 1st period.
Blowing a call and not seeing it happen are totally different.
@@thecasinator2679exactly... you can't call something you don't see. The play-by-play announcers have a great view and they didn't see the high-stick. It was reasonable to believe that the puck caused the cut on Gilmour.

I don't know what Fraser specifically said about it, but it seems like an exceptionally fast flick of the stick. If he deliberately chose not to call it that's one thing, but I've gone through it frame by frame and it was a nanosecond in time. I understand that Fraser was on the ice and had a much clearer view, but to me, this was a very easy call to not see.
He's stated he simply didn't see it.
Do I believe him? I honestly don't know.
I'm a Habs fan, so like to think it wouldn't have mattered who they faced,.

It's something that'll never have the possibility of happening again, which makes it even worse.
I would say Fraser broke the rules. The rules say Gretzky should have received a penalty, and Fraser decided not to. Gretzky did not have the option to volunteer a penalty.
He may have not seen it live. Even with the replay it wasn't obvious at first. And these were not reviewable back then.

@@thecasinator2679 not really, he was even removed for the playoff loosing over 70k$ after a couple of bad game calls in his finals years. He was known to keep game score tight by calling out the winning team when the score was offf.

The Kings were the better team in game 7, as they were in 2 other games in the series, and the Leafs were the better team in 3 of the games. The point of this is that Gretzky should of been out of the game and the Leafs should of had a PP in OT. It doesn't matter who the 2 teams are, that's the way it should of been. There's no way of knowing if they would of won the game or not but in that specific situation, there's a very good chance.

Maybe Wayne Gretzky is born to parents that live in Hamilton, Mississippi and he never laces up a pair of skates. He takes a job at a company named Tronox and he is set to retire after 45 years as an employee next April. Not hard to miss that call. Kerry is across the rink, Gilmore has his back to him. Nobody saw it. It's only on a slo-mo replay that you realize it was Gretzky's stick and not the puck that hit Gilmore in the face. It's hard for new hockey fans to understand how the game was played before instant replay, coach's challenges, four refs, and NHL head office monitoring every play. Also, penalties were not handed out like participation ribbons in the playoffs like they are today. The NHL is softer than a marshmallow today and the product on the ice reflects it.
Damn you Hockey Psychology… these memories were adequately buried and repressed until you had to beautifully detail the events of the night for us again. Aggghhhhhhhh….

I dunno about that, I mean there is no doubt that Gretzky did the high stick, and he should have gotten penalized. There is no way Gretz did it on purpose, but he knew he did that it regardless, so he just skated away and kept silent and hoped for the best. I have a strong feeling he would've accepted that penalty without protest would it have gotten called. He was just real lucky it didn't.
@mat5473 Professional sports is 90% mind games. I mean, obviously, there's a skill gap, too. But these guys are talking trash to each other non-stop. In hockey, there's most of the physical stuff allowed, but for example, in soccer, players constantly keep stepping on each others' toes, pushing, pulling, pinching. Pros will literally do anything to distract and piss off their opponents and also manipulate the referee.

While I hated Gretzky while he was playing, I can't really argue with how the call went. The officials were human beings, and cannot see everything.
I had basically stopped watching hockey by then, so this was actually the first time I've seen the play. I can now watch these things with an impartial view.
I recall this well. It was the battle of the Head Coach Mullets: Burns vs. Melrose.
The video should be called "When a fan base obsesses about one blown call for over thirty years and hence, plays victim for eternity because of said blown call." They didn't lose the series because of the blown call either, there was a whole other game to play. A real champion overcomes adversity. Wipe your tears and get over it. It's literally been decades. Also, it didn't matter. The Leafs were not beating Roy.
if you look at it closely. its Gilmour's falling to the ice and laying there stretched out for a second or two is what gave the appearance of a faked hurt dive. I believe this was in Fraser's & the 2 linemen's minds initially in that moment which led to the no call
