Wyatte Wylie was drafted with a pick that originally belonged to the Coyotes, which basically makes him Wylie Coyote (tho I'm very happy he's a Flyer instead)
As a Flyers fan, Jeff Carter was always my favorite player as a kid. I was sad to see him go, but it was nice seeing him and Richards beat the Rangers.

Wyatt Wylie delivered one of the filthiest hip checks ever on me back in 18U defiently weird hearing the name of someone you played in one of these videos
Didn't even mention how Nash had to fly to Carter's home with management on the east coast to convince him to come to Columbus because he was so pissed. Right then we knew he wouldn't fit in here.
The fact the flyers got rid of carter and richards because of their "partying and immaturity together"....only for them to reunite and bring 2 cups to LA. Gotta still piss off philly fans.
@@timeland8343 lol, i love being a flyers fan for this reason more than any other.... we can have some of the best, top 5 of the decade players, and EVERYBODY always wants to say where's the cup? Funny, no one asks that of any other multi year drought team... took ovi almost 10 years before he got his... no asks why mcdavid doesnt have one yet... its cracks me up, be a real hockey fan and not a band wagon rivalry tool
And after that Blue Jackets hire Kekalainen as the new GM.., I feel like after seeing this fiasco that was the smartest move in their franchise history!
as a flyers fan at the time i haaaaaaaated this trade. hated it. we were just on the heels of a cup final and you trade carter and richards. our 2 top players at the time. i thought it was massively dumb. but seing how we got coots, voraceck, simmonds, and schenn. i think it worked out quite well.
@SierraPhantom yeah... on ice preformance wasnt the issue with carter and richards back then... Richards problems in LA didnt start there and they liked atlantic city a LITTLE too much...
The Flyers didn't do that as a hockey trade. They wanted to break up the "Old City" crew and had already traded Joffrey Lupul to the Ducks and Scottie Upshall to what's now Arizona. Carter, Lupul, Upshall, and Mike Richards, were both people known for partying in Philly and lived downtown.
@SierraPhantom simmonds played 8 years with us. in those 8 years he scored 25 or more goals 6 times. having at least 10ppg in those seasons. so yeah sure he "sucked". and while schenn, voraceck, and coots arent "stars" they have been consistant workhorses for us. where like the others said carter and richards had a hard time staying out of trouble with drugs and trying to sleep with teammates wives. also that was when the kings where in their prime and had a better defense and quick in net backing them up.
The Gaborik to Columbus trade might be even crazier. Like Carter his stay in Columbus was brief and disappointing, but some of the pieces in that deal pinged around like crazy. Brassard in particular went from CBJ to NYR to OTT to VGK to PIT to FLA to COL.
Mike Richard was the man in philly, hard working two way center, when he was traded i was like wth? Then when we traded Jeff carter i was super mad bc he is the last pure goal scorer we had in philly, go down the left wing cut across to the middle, snap shot top left corner,
As a Blue Jackets fan I 100% asked for this, literally because I tweeted that this should be made. I guess I just missed being hurt by my team, and oh boy did this deliver the pain.
I had forgotten how dominant the Kings were in their 2012 Cup winning run. I guess in terms of the maxim that the winner of a trade is the one who gets the best player doesn't apply if you dump that player after one injury-plagued season.
Steve, you missed one other part of the trade: The first round draft pick to Columbus was their option for either 2012 or 2013. Of course, when the Kings won the cup and were going to pick last, the BJs chose the 2013 option. So in 2012 the Kings picked Tanner Pearson 30th, a pretty decent top 6 player. And in 2013 the BJs got Marko Dano.
Their is a part of this trade that Steve left out. The first round pick that the kings gave the blue jackets was actually conditional. The condition was if the kings make the playoffs the blue jackets can make a decision and make their pick a 2012 first round pick or a 2013 first round pick. Since the kings won the cup they decided to pick in 2013. So the kings picked Tanner Pearson 30th overall in 2012 and the next year like Steve said the blue jackets with the kings pick, took Marko Dano 27th overall
That Carter trade i was a little hesitant because of the injuries but when i tracked the Kings production in the final 21 games of that 2012 season the reason LA went on a tear is because their goals for had jumped from 27th to 2nd (i think St.Louis was the only Western conference team that had more goals) in the Western conference over that span. Nobody noticed it because on season totals the Kings still finished the season in the bottom 5 offensively and were playing Vancouver who had eliminated them the year prior. I did an article for Jewels from the crown on it. Back then websites didn't track goal differentials per quarter season so i had to painstakingly track every teams goal differential at the time. LA was already #1 or 2 defensively, but offensively no one noticed the increase once Carter joined LA and thought i was crazy for saying that LA was gonna go on a tear in the upcoming 2012 playoffs. I ended up right. 😂
My American friends tell me I do it, but I still don't think it's as pronounced. But there's another NHL RUclipsr I watch sometimes, I DIE laughing everytime he says out/about. It's so thick it's incredible.
The type of extension he got was called a front loaded contract which means your salary decreases as you get further into the contract and typically makes sense for teams who are extending an older player and expect regression especially when trying to get them a ship
The presentation style is very RUclips-esque, but the content and fact checking are very good, I think it finds a nice balance of entertainment but also very informative. Nice work.
Meh flyers fan always saying how they won these trades.... but the best performance was their cup final run with carter and Richards in the line up... not trading them away.
Probably too early to do the Erik Karlsson trade. Let's wait till after the draft. Because.... Omph that could be a real dang-it depending on how that lottery goes.
Carter didn't want to be a member of the Blue jackets and bad mouthed the team and community. Professionally he stunk and Columbus had to dump him because he was a cancer on the team. If you're that hung up about a team "winning" a trade, try Columbus stealing Sergei Bobrovsky from Philadelphia for 3 warm bodies.
I still remember finding out the Kings got both Richards and Carter which was one of the craziest acquisitions I've ever seen. Two of the Flyers best players who got crazy chemistry together now sent to join the Kings who already got some promising up and comers. Two cup wins as a result of it!
Wait Steve, Jeff Carter wasn’t originally a flyers draft pick. That draft pick came from Phoenix for Daymond Langkow who came with renberg for Chris Gratton who was an offer sheet trade for renberg and dykhuis (not directly but flyers traded to get the picks back those picks include Simon Gagne & Justin Williams). Adam Oates and Rick Tocchet are also part of this tree.
I think us Blue Jackets fans need to thank John Davidson that we still have a team. After that Carter deal, not only did the Jackets finish last in the league, there were rumblings about the team not lasting much longer in Columbus (the Jackets ended up staying thanks to a deal that the arena would also be funded by casino money; something people weren't happy about because it took casino money away from education funding). Without Davidson building a team in 2012-2013 that had the Jackets on the verge of the playoffs, I doubt the team's in Columbus now.
You mentioned Mike richards in this tree steve... kinda shocked you didn't do the richards trade.... FYI 11 years later not one is this tree technically alive but so is the richards one.
I'll state that my prediction that the Kings would win the Cup after Terry Murray was fired at my Salvation Army kettle post (I believe the exact words were THE CUP IS OURS!!!)... The Sharks fan I told it to said that he'd put $50 in that kettle the following season if they do... He paid up the second week of the following kettle season...
Dear god our front office was horrid for the first 15 years of the franchise. Ugh. I can't even feel anything about this because it was just part of life as a CBJ fan. Also, the fact that we came back on the Flyers for Bobrovsky 364 days later. That makes up for it a little.
Didn’t Jonathan Davidson not get traded to Ottawa in the Matt Dushene trade? Should have called the video “How trading for Jeff Carter landed the Jackets Matt Dushene”
