Independence day video on the NHL's independence from Eddie Livingstone? Brilliant
I did a write up on the Hamilton Tigers once, and this was one of the most fascinating parts of that era. So glad you're taking a deeper dive into it. Gonna be a great watch.
This. Hockey's Eight Men Out.
The year 1916 has a ton of sports movie worthy stories:
This Story
The 222-0 College Football Game
The Minor League Baseball Game that ended in 34 minutes
The Collapse of the Federal League
The Philadelphia Athletics going 36-117
I'm sure I missed something but that is a lot of weird stuff
The 222-0 story is probably the most insane thing to ever happen in sports. And I say sports, because the story starts in baseball and ends in football. The moral of the story: don't run up the score on John Heisman.
As a lover of history, I absolutely love these hockey history videos. This video & the other one you did on Eddie Livingstone had me absolutely in tears from laughing so hard. Quite a character.Thank you Shannon.
i imagine the NHL at the time like the Impractical Jokers where one of the NHL owners goes "ok now take all of Eddie's players" and they all die laughing
"When you sign the litigation papers say "I'm a hoppy hockey jockey" at the top of your lungs. Then offer him gum.
So happy you made this video again… this is the most craziest story in hockey history
I like these history videos. When u mentioned Calder it got me thinking about the Calder trophy and where it came from and the person it was named after. Videos on each trophy and its history would be fun :)
"Hey guys, did you see what Eddie's been doing recently?"
"Oh god what now."
"Wants to create a team out of Hamilton."
"Just put the Remparts there, then we're fine."
"I'll just make a quick phonecall to the players and the deal's done."
"Fantastic"
It reminds me of a book about early Canadian hockey history written by Stephen Harper (yes, same guy) called: « A Great Game: The Forgotten Leafs & the Rise of Professional Hockey. » Worth the read!
Love the NHL history videos
So this is like-if Dan Snyder were so damaging and painful to deal with that The other NFL owners founded a new football league just to get rid of Dan Snyder?
Wow. How, cold, petty and brilliant.
If I recall correctly, the NBA did get rid of that awful Clippers owner, but he got what many thought was way more than their value in the sale.
@@closethockeyfan5284 Donald Sterling was The Clippers owner. He was known as a slum lord and cartoon villain of a nasty man. IIRC, Sterling was caught on tape saying and displaying racism without shame. So Sterling had to go.
As far as the value of the sale. It's rare that a pro sports team is put up for sale. Leagues are also very exclusive in how they approve and admit owners. So Steve Ballmer paying $2 Billion wasn't a suprise.
Great Livingstone story - I learned a lot, already knew Livingstone was a feisty guy, but didn't know he sued the leagues so often or so long!
I love this story every time it comes up lol
Thanks again man!
You’re original video on Livingstone was my favorite video of yours of all time. Happy to see an update 😂
I just watched the first livvy video a couple months ago, and laughed constantly and this one was no different
3,000 dollars in 1916 is something like 80,000 now
5,000 dollars in 1916 is something like 134,000 now
Okay.
I literally just watched the other Livingstone video again yesterday. Probably my favorite hockey story.
I'm hockey fan, I'm historian so it's an incredible video (and funny) for me, thank you Shannon !
Can you do a history of the NHA for those who aren't informed on that history
Oh my god, thank you Shannon, I haven't laughed like this in a week, since my mom's partner had to be rushed to the hospital due to a stroke and ultimately had to be taken off life support and passed away. It's been really dark inside my head right now, so thank you SO much for making me laugh at the absolutely insanity of petty bullshit that was the formation of the NHL.
Thank you for the awesome history lesson!!
I must've missed the first video, because I was just thinking to myself yesterday, "I wish Shannon would make a video on Eddie Livingstone" and here it is.
This is great. Creative content and a history lesson. Thank you
You should put a small Eddie Livingstone in Gary's picture frame
It would be like the NBA changing it's name instead of banning Donald Sterling
Owners meetings probably also consisted of them drinking, partying and singing “We Do, We Do!”
Nhl actually stands for No Hecking Livingstone
This is excellent! Keep them coming, Shannon.
Eddie Livingstone makes Harold Ballard look like a rocket scientist and Eddie Shore look like a saint. John Spano and Eugene Melnick pale in comparison.
This is the hockey equivalent of cutting Homer from the Stonecutters. 😋 Very similar thing happened in the 90's in Britain when the (short lived) superleague was set up and the initial proposal cut out several big teams whilst including a few smaller ones who didn't want to be in it. A joke rumour even went round that Manchester and Sheffield would play each other 48 times with the top 2 progressing to the playoffs! 😉
This sounds a lot like the founding years of Pro Wrestling especially the formation of the NWA...
Yes! Another Eddie Livingston video! haha
What timing! I just watched the old Livingstone video yesterday.
Can't wait for your video on NHL founder Eddie Glumplet.
The NHL: cool, now we finally don't have to deal with Livingstone anymore!
Also the NHL: let's get involved in every part of this guy's existence for an entire decade and over
What an insane story!
Deceptions and Doublecross was a good read, thanks for the video Shannon.
great video! I read about this stuff a while back
Can’t wait to see 2021 and 22 review videos
Eddie Livingstone’s grandmother was born in 1812
He was one hell of a character!
Love when you talk Livingstone.
Harold probably knew all about Livingstone when he set out to conquer the Maple Leafs.
From my experiences working for many wealthy people, I've observed they're all miserable arrogant morally bankrupt spoiled rotten people. Imagine how awful you have to be to get them all collectively hating you?
I don't know if I'm ever gonna hear someone say NHL without thinking "Not Having Livvy". :)
You should do a update to the video about Harold Ballard.
"Or AHA! I burst out laughing.
I'm surprised they didn't go as far as hiring an assassin to get rid of him.
NHL: "I'm gonna pay you $100 to fuck off"
After watching this Shannon you should definitely do another video on Harold Ballard
Sounds similar to what they did to Jim Balsillie when he tried to bring the NHL to Hamilton. If you want to be an NHL owner, you'd better be prepared to pucker up. Granted, Livingstone sounds like he was a complete jerk, so it makes sense that the other owners wouldn't want anything to do with him, but wow.
Legend has it hes an ancestor of Ralph “burger” Diggins
This is still so freaking funny
Interesting, very nice!
Toronto Hockey - We have a history of bad owners!
Shannon, do you have a set of Trail of the Stanley Cup? Mine got trashed in a flood.
A lot of foreboding when it comes to the NHL with the saga of Livingstone.
3:15 ... I have. It's fun, as long as you are not the one who has to deal with them.
Guys who aren't happy unless they're arguing are called lawyers
There was an owner in the NFL by the name of Hugh Culverhouse, who became the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976. I compared him to Harold Ballard as he was as cheap as Ballard, and shared Ballard's mindset of only caring about winning. Culverhouse would often bribe players and coaches to invest in projects that weren't being constructed yet, and those concepts ended up falling through. The Buccaneers were a hellhole of a team. First round pick after first round pick was traded in order to fix up a position. And the franchise paid heavily for these moves. It wasn't until after Culverhouse's death in 1994 that the Buccaneers started playing better, much like the Leafs after Ballard's passing. Though the Bucs have something the Leafs are still searching for. A championship title.
Eddie Livingstone would have been those two owners combined if he had still been a part of the league back then, as well as the others that you mentioned.
Culverhouse’s widow said she wanted to dig him up, shoot him, then stick him back in the grave
This video is dedicated to Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Washington NFL franchise...
If they made a movie about him I'd like it to be a comedy and them to cast Jim Carrey as Eddie Livingstone.
Hahaha When you said "Cats" talking about cats who like to fight, I thought you meant "Katz" as in the owner of the Oilers
i had no idea who this was, so interesting lmao
I could totally see a "Death of Stalin" type movie made for Livingstone
14:55 Ha!
I swear I've seen this episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
5:50 reminds me of Trailer Park Boys when Ricky pays Lahey $100 to F off 😆
I laugh each time when I see the gary bettman frame in the background
He sounds like Steinbrenner before he was suspended.
Always appreciate the Simpsons references. Worst NHA owner EVER.
Actually, the Toronto Ontarios was fitting if you think of Toronto as a city that thinks of itself as its own nation, err province.
Hey Shannon, any idea when the 2022-2023 nhl season schedule will be released?
This month. I'm wondering whether they'll wait until after the draft to allow time to manufacture hype.
Yeah, I can see them doing it after the draft. Good point.
Shannon, just so you know. We’re expecting another call from Gary Bettman when you hit 300k.
It has taken your last few videos a minute to load after you upload for some reason.
And the NHA was started in a hotel lobby by 2 guys who got snubbed by the big guys
If there was a Canadian adaptation of The Office, it has to be this
That's what She said, eh?
This is how Timothy Dexter's life was supposed to go.
PT wait that circus guy ive seen that movie
“Part Harold Ballard”
Why couldn’t they form a no Ballard nhl 😭
Oh!
Who would play Livingstone in a movie? Russell Crowe?
It's now given why the NHL didn't have a LivingstoneTrophy in his honor. LOL
I seen women who aint happy unless they fighting with someone 🤷♂️
18:30 here's your answer Joseph Fiennes and he looks like him
Jack Nicholson would be a great Eddie Livingston I think!
Next cat name: Livvy
Fantastic video, never heard of any of this story. Sounds like a downfall of a narcisssist to me, and that makes me smile. By the way, "Toroonto Ontarians has to be the most uncreative name in history" made me laugh out loud. Thanks for your content!
We had two football teams named rough riders in the CFL not too long ago
@@rivahkillah Wow, guess I gotta teach you some CFL history. First off, It wasn't the same, even during the era when both teams played. Saskatchewan's is a compound word, 'Roughriders', while Ottawa's was always two separate 'Rough Riders'. So, you're wrong already. Also, in the earlier decades, teams in the east and west didn't play each other until the Grey Cup, so it wasn't often a big deal. Glad I could educate you.
Not paying rent? If he were around today, he could have been in Arizona.
so if Canada wants more teams, we're gonna have to bring Eddie back from the dead, and have him try to start a league with teams in Hamilton and Quebec City..
As a german with a very uncommon (even in Germany) Name, nerver in my life would I thought to to hear a canadian talking about hockey, say your last name "Steinbrenner".
I don't know who is the bad guy here.
To be honest back when i saw the first video, i was on Eddies side.
And well i still am. I feel bad for him to get fcked with so much.
I get that he must have been an irritating person. But there is a general rule in the world.
"Don't be a dick". And especially you don't mess around with someones livelyhood or passions. That is just cruel.
At some point the NHl should have let him be. Be the bigger people.
And i don't know what he did in perticular that was so bad. An example of such would have been perfect.
Wonder if Daniel Snyder will be the NFL's Eddie Livingstone? The NFL needs to get rid of Snyder to save the NFL itself, IMO.
They have eleventy billion dollars in revenue. Mess with their bottom line and you’ll see some changes. Just saying…
@@TheManny717 If the NFL even tries to get rid of him, he'll sue and the fun really begins!!!!!
He changed the name of the team, what other travesty is going on?
@@evilmotorsports5076 Made life a living hell for any women working for the team; cooked the accounting books (two sets of books); didn't give each road team what they were owed whenever a team plays at the Skins/WFT home stadium (each team gives like 40% of a game revenue to the opposing team), and a bunch of things that I'm sure come to light eventually. Oh, yeah...basically had the cheerleaders become a bunch of prostitutes while in Costa Rica.
the houston texans were clearly inspired by the toronto ontarios
So your talking about the owner of the Washington Football Team.....
They really hate Eddie man, he shoulda just taken the 3k and run
John Goodman would be perfect
Conspiracy: Eddie Livingstone burned the Montreal Arena... basing it off nothing.
Toronto's cups as the St. Pats shouldn't count.
Sounds kinda like Al Davis was to the NFL…
