for that to happen, byfield/stutzle's career, on its own, would have to be superior to the combined careers of jason spezza and zdeno chara. whichever one you draft, you are asking him to be a player on the level of crosby, ovechkin, malkin, or mcdavid. you are asking him to be worth more than the combined value of a #1 center and a #1 defenseman with 20 year careers, the latter of which is likely to make it into the hall of fame. but according to you, if it didn't happen in the last 10 years, it didn't happen at all. i bet you think crosby and mcdavid are the best players who ever played for the teams they're on, too.

Best trades in Ottawa Senators history? Trading Pavol Demitra for Christer Olsson, a first round pick, 16th overall (Vladimir Tarasenko) for David Rundblad, and Mika Zibanejad and a second round pick for Derick Brassard and a seventh rounder.
The Tarasenko trade while rough also needs the context of the Runblad for Turris trade. And for the Zibanejad trade (which I remind you took Zbad a couple years to get going in New York as his first two years... not very good and his advance stats are still not great for a 1st line centerman) you also need to take into a account the Brassard for Gustavsson Trade. Fun fact about the DiPietro contract. I calculated with the date he signed his contract and with my age. When his 15-year contract will end, I will be officially major. Also, a trade tree only on Mike Sillinger's Career would be interesting I think.
Also, the devils have now traded Joey Anderson who was the third in 2016 in the sens-devils deal (I’m assuming he’s Joseph Anderson) to the leafs for Johnsson so this trade tree needs to be updated
Depends on what the Karlsson trade looks like in the future... Sens got 3rd OA this year, Norris, Balcers, another pick in the 2nd IIRC and a few more pieces
I don't want to label this trade the best in Sens history yet because I want to see how the Karlsson trade pans out. If Stutzle/Byfield turns into a franchise winger/center, Josh Norris translates his game to the NHL, and Rudolfs Balcers pans out, we could be talking about a spectacularly good trade for the Sens, especially considering the form Karlsson has been in since the trade and the contract he is currently on.
@@stevenightfall6634 They also are not really a feeder team either. We can talk about that when they trade how many HOF players the Isles did in the 90s-00s. Also, Ottawa got BANK for their trades of their stars the Isles got... ummm... something.
A Mark Messier 1991 trade tree would be very good. It’d be worth it just to hear the story of how Pierre McGuire (former Whalers coach) totally screwed the Whalers in the Steven Rice compensation hearing where the Oilers ended up with Marchment instead of Robert Kron.
4 years later, the trade tree continues. Nick Paul became a reliable third-liner and was dealt to Tampa for Mathieu Joseph (who was dealt to St. Louis for future considerations as a cap dump) and a 2024 4th round pick (Blake Montgomery).
I really want to know Milbury’s thought process through all of the trades he made. The guy traded Luongo, Chara, McCabe, Bertuzzi, Spezza and drafted a goalie and signed him for about 50 years
It took a million years, but Nick Paul is finally looking like a player. He's pretty much the ideal modern 4th liner. Big, fast, and plays hard. You guys should do the Gaborik to CBJ trade. It spider webs like crazy.
Hint, The Leafs traded Matt Frattin twice which resulted by some ungodly miracle in the Ottawa Senators trading for Dion Phaneuf with no salary retention whatsoever. They also traded the pick that resulted in Travis Dermott who was traded again eventually resulting in Toronto getting that pick right back and the pick they traded it for the player has played 23 games in the NHL. Weeeeee. Man looking that stuff up is harder than it looks.
I was about to say the best ottawa trade was either Demitra vs Christer Olsson or Daigle vs Falloon, but the Daigle/Falloon trade also include Vaclav Prospal and a 2nd round pick (who became Chris Bala ...) so i'm thinking : wow the daigle trade isn't as bad as i tought
hold on the best Ottawa trade might be Ted Donato and the rights of Antti-Jussi Niemi in exchange for former pittsburgh goalie Patrick Lalime, Donato was out of the league 1 or 2 season later and i'm pretty shure Niemi played less than 30 games, as for Lalime he was the starter for 5 years
Do a Shattenkirk for Johnson trade tree. Intrigues me since I didn't know how EJ got on the Avs since he was the Blues #1 pick. Plus Shattenkirk was used as a rental and those are always fun to do trade trees with, right Montreal
Chara's last year in Ottawa, they also had Dominik Hasek. Greatest team never to win the cup in that teams history. And they lost it all halfway through the season due to an ankle injury at Czech international play
Have you thought about doing a David Perron trade tree? A pick forfeited for hiring a new head coach, a pick that turns into Mathew Barzal, and a trade for Carl Hagelin?? I know these are solely trades, but going back to St. Louis only to be left unprotected and helping Vegas to the Stanely Cup Finals... and then resigning with St. Louis again! And winning a cup! He's had quite the NHL experience.
The real question Steve is the Karlsson deal history repeating itself? Do the senators get over the hump this time? I’m really interested in there future. (So long as the owner shuts up)
Let's be honest. Even if it didn't end up fantastic in the end in terms of assets coming back, the trade still would have been excellent for Ottawa because they got rid of talented but major headache. The guy was a locker room cancer and a PR nightmare, almost exclusively by his own design. He was the exact opposite of Pavel Bure. While Pavel's issues stemmed from Canucks management at the time mistreating and disrespecting him at every turn, with Yashin it was the exact opposite. I'm a Canucks fan, but I usually root for the Sens when they're in the playoffs and have since 1992-93. I remember watching their first game on Hockey Night in Canada in that tiny arena. I always hoped they'd do well, but it hasn't worked out for them or any Canadian team since 1993. If you're looking for the background story on this, The Hockey Guy did a great synopsis a while back on his channel. Shannon has been on Steve's podcast once or twice.
I always liked Rick Dipietro. I don't think that pick was horrible. What led up to it was weird, since they had Luongo and traded him. But once that was water under the bridge, picking Rick wasn't horrible. He had a lot of bad luck with injuries. And he was probably the most fun to watch goalie in the NHL. Imagine Marty Brodeur or Marty Turco playing the puck...but like really erratic. He would play the puck a lot and was good at it, but he would also go after pucks he had zero buisness going after. Hilarity often ensued
Steve you forgot one thing to add to the injury for Isles. Alex was also playing in the KH:L while getting paid by the Isles. The point that you did not add about Alex was that the only good players they had on forward were Mike Peca and Alex they had not wingers.
Steve, I think you really need to do a Mike Milbury Special for this Trade Tree series. We all know how those trades paid off in 2-3 years time, but it would be interesting to see how they evolve in longer terms.
The amazing part has to be that Chara is still in the NHL and Spezza is also still in the league.
And not to twist a salty knife but playing on the Leafs with former Islanders Captian John Tavares.
Edit: Spezza that is.

Its ironic that Ottawa is now the feeder club for the league after going through all that. But dumping Yashin was the best move they ever made.
How is it ironic? Also all teams are at the bottom at some point. The Sens are improving year by year again now.
Congrats on the kid! Love the videos!
4 years later, the trade tree continues. Nick Paul became a reliable third-liner and was dealt to Tampa for Mathieu Joseph (who was dealt to St. Louis for future considerations as a cap dump) and a 2024 4th round pick (Blake Montgomery).
You will be a great dad. So happy for you.
“Buy high, sell low”
-Mike Milbury
Doug Gilmour!!! I really wanna see Doug Gilmour from the Blues to Calgary in the 80’s. I will do it myself for you if I have to
I legitimately laughed out loud when you named the mystery defender.
just watched again, it's still alive with Nick Paul going to Tampa at the deadline this year! two branches!
Congrats on the kid. I have a new two month old. Being a dad is awesome. Love the videos
I really want to know Milbury’s thought process through all of the trades he made. The guy traded Luongo, Chara, McCabe, Bertuzzi, Spezza and drafted a goalie and signed him for about 50 years
He didn't sign the DP contract, he actually got fired for refusing to do that
It took a million years, but Nick Paul is finally looking like a player.
Besides Chara, where do you think Otts got Redden?
Please don't do that to Isles fans. The thought of them having Redden and Chara rather than Ottawa probably keeps them up at night.
Great video! I would love to see the shanahan trade to Detroit in 96. Or really just more Detroit.
These are my favorite on all of RUclips
Congrats on your new kid Mr Dangle!
CONGRATS STEVE DADGLE!
“....and a defenseman that I won’t name just yet”
Me, literally wearing his jersey: ehehehehehehe
Trade Tree Ideas: - Alexander Mogilny to Vancouver
- Dominik Hasek to Detroit
Probably the best Ottawa trade of all time
So they could've had Luongo, Chara and Spezza instead of DiPietro and Yashin. Hmm...
Brian McCabe too. If Milbury had literally done nothing they would have been a power house team.
Plus either gaborik or heatley with the pick they used to draft dipietro
Interesting fact: Morgan Klimchuk was the player picked by Calgary using Pittsburgh's 1st rounder from the Iginla deal.
You forgot to mention that the 3rd in 2016 the Devils got in the deal became Joey Anderson who is a decent young middle 6 forward for the Devils.
Depending how this year's picks turn out, trading Karlsson might be the best trade in Senators history...
Idk how deep a Trade tree of “the Trade” would be but that
Did Dangle get an Ayres Young Guns? I did. Best Zamboni driver to walk the Earth.
Congrats on the kid Steve!
Adam Deadmarsh, Jason Allison, Sergei Samsanov & Sergei Gonchar are others for the NHL Trade Tree
Not sure how it would work but you should do one involving the trades that got the Sedins to Vancouver
As a lifelong Sens fan, this trade was by FAR the greatest in team history. Can’t say the same for half the moves Murray made.
Been waiting for this one. Best thing the Sens have ever done
Steve, I think you really need to do a Mike Milbury Special for this Trade Tree series.
We all know how those trades paid off in 2-3 years time, but it would be interesting to see how they evolve in longer terms.
Yeah probably the best ever. We'll have to see what Norris and the 3rd overall pick becomes though.
That 5th and potentially 15th overall pick could also be something considering we got karlsson around 15
As a sens fan, This tree is still so much pain.
Yo Steve really liking this camera angle. Hope Leo, you and Mrs Dangle are doing great!
The best trade ever was Newsky Lalonde for 35k and Aurel Joliat.
Lalonde retire after the trade and Joliat became a legende...
