Have you ever done the Trevor Linden to NYI trade? It's quite the tree.
As an Oilers fan, I never understood the animosity against either Hall or Larsson. Both are good players at what their game is, and it's not like either of them were the ones that pulled the trigger on this deal. Right now, I'd happily take either player.
The hate for Hall, whether it was justified or not, was because of his excessive partying(doing blow), his arrogance towards the veterans/management on the team. He was known as a toxic player. He has definitely outgrown that description, but people need to remember why there was hate in the first place.
@@Bakemer94 this is one of the few trades I'll give PC a pass for. People rip on this deal but it didn't happen in a vacuum. No other team gave up a package bigger than New Jersey. I certainly hope he’s talking about the Jordan Staal trade tree, one of the most fascinating moments in draft day history. The parts that should’ve worked out didn’t. And many trades later, it’s got many aspects that affect both teams today.
In all you said about Taylor Hall you forgot one very important asset he added to all his teams: Instant Draft-Lotterie win as soon as he joins. Well, except from the Bruins :D
Extremely sad we lost Larsson to Seattle :( His father passing while on a trip to Edmonton played a large part in the decision to move on, as well as the discussed scrutiny as a result of this trade. Both of those are totally fair reasons to move on, but I'll miss the guy for sure.
As a Devils fan, this was really awesome to see drawn out. Hall was great for us, and I was bummed to lose Larsson, but end of the day I couldn't be happier with the pieces we have now. Credit to the player that Hall can be when he's healthy, but give me Bahl and Mercer (who has been going off in the preseason) any day. They fit with the youth movement the Devils are going with, and they have some incredible mentors to learn from now. But, as Steve said, best to both Hall in Boston and Lars in Seattle
Update : Siegenthaler is having his first full season, he's being quite good and there is no doubt he will have several other seasons. Dawson Mercer is on his second season with a pace of over 45 points in 82 games.
Update to the Update: Mercer finished the season with 27 goals and 29 assist for 52 point Siegs has become Dougie's partner on the blueline when Bahl is not up there to give a bit more physicality to that top line.
I mean a lot of the reason for Hall’s trade was the locker chemistry negativity revolving around him with other Oilers. If there was no negativity in the locker room I don’t believe he would’ve ever been traded at the time
revisiting this a year later, the devils FLEECED the coyotes. Mercer is just a great two way middle six guy and Siegenthaler who we got from the 3rd, is one of the best defense first defenseman. wow. just crazy
Doing the same thing, although I'd say the Devils fleeced the Caps more than athe Yotes here. Bhal Mercer and a 3rd isn't that bad for Hall. It's the Caps who gave us a future top pair dman for a 3rd.
Looking back at the trade. The devils absolutely killed this trade tree. They got an MVP, a top 6 defenseman who has played solid minutes, Dawson Mercer, who is going to be a cornerstone for this team, and the best defensive defenseman in the league. Not too bad for just Adam Larsson

Hall is still up in the air this season. With the Bruins missing Krejci who basically gifted him those 8 goals its going to be interesting to see what will happen.
At best its an even trade because neither side made a deep run with either player. The Devils still stand a chance of winning the trade if the five guys they still have in their system as a result of the Arizona trade materialize into something.
Mercer is absolutely killing it in the NHL right now. Played his way onto the team in the preseason and he's got a handfull of points already as a rookie
Here after his 20th goal of the 2022-2023 season and he’s on a 7-game goal streak. Mercer looks great and a huge asset for the Devils for years to come. Congrats
You didn't mention Milan Lucic. Adam Larsson was regarded as the time as being less valuable than Taylor Hall, BUT he had a much smaller salary. That was 100% part of the reason why this trade was made. The fact that Peter Chiarelli gain all this cap space from the trade and then immediately blew it on Milan Lucic's salary is an important part of the narrative behind this trade (even if that's not exactly fair to either of the players involved)
Jaros was on the opening night roster in Newark (due to injuries to Smith and Severson), as was Mercer (and Siegenthaler), so this turned into three players in the lineup for New Jersey to start the year. Bahl is in Utica, but there's a good chance the Devils find room for him after Subban's contract expires. Agree that this should be revisited in a few years to see if there is more hay to be made on the New Jersey side.

Ah, the Oilers vs Ducks series. The year the Ducks became my least favorite team. The year I solidified my disdain for Ryan Kessler. The year Corey Perry lost all of my respect (although his work in Montreal last year maybe redeemed him a bit)
How were those plays in Games 4 and 5 not goaltender interference? I've seen plays where a goaltender gets bumped by an opposing player, is able to adjust his position and almost make a good save, only for the goal to be called back because of said bump into the goalie. And then you have Kesler holding onto Talbot's pad, for about three seconds, Talbot can't move far enough to make the save, and the goal is allowed? Yeah, they shouldn't have allowed the first two in, either, but there was foul play here, and just like in 1993 with the Wayne Gretzky high stick on Doug Gilmour, it ultimately came back to haunt the officials. And in Game 4, I don't know what to say on that one. Unless Talbot wasn't making the save regardless of Perry being there or not, that still should have been goalie interference.
I went to every Windsor Spitfires home game for that entire series vs Kitchener Rangers. Was literally the craziest time ever. Kitchener was such a gooooood team
I am a diehard Oilers fan (originally from Winnipeg funny enough) and I would declare the Oilers as the victor of this trade based on usable man hours alone. Larsen was an integral part of the Oiler's D core and, not to mention, the development of fellow Swede D man, Klefbom. Oilers fans love to focus on the Taylor Hall winning the Hart aspect to the trade. However, the Oilers would not have been able to retain his impending cap burden and sign to low production players known as Drai and McDavid. I wish nothing but success for Larsen in Seattle.
Hey Steve- ever think about doing lopsided trades? My favorite- Barry Pederson for (drumroll) Cam Neely & a 1st rd pick that turned out to be Glen Wesley.

Buffalo did bad on the Hall trade due to he would only NMC to Boston the had better offer but he wouldn't move. Also the CBA hurt them because of them dropping the conditional on resigning clause. But with the Hall curse they got the first pick.
I think the devils won…as a devils fan I love Siegs, Bahl, and Dawson. The Devils as a whole had a great season this year, but these guys all came into their own and played well by the end of the season. That said, despite the Bruins’ early exit in the playoffs, Taylor Hall went OFF… AND now he gets to play with Bedard. Happy for him.
I mean today the Devils did ok….. Dawson Mercer looks awesome in the preseason. Kevin Bahl got a taste last year and looked OK, he probably won’t make the Devs this year out of camp but he could be the first guy up. Jaros will likely be the 7th D on the roster, and Sieganthaler will probably be a bottom pair guy this year.
Do the Trevor Linden trade tree. It directly led the Canucks to pick Both Sedins and aquire Luongo. Plus there's the islanders side and Montreal side. I feel like this tree could be massive.
For all the troubles that both of these guys have had, I would love to have both of them playing for my team. I'm sure that many fans would feel the same way.
Larsson is the most under-rated defensemen in the NHL today. Seattle fans would agree, simply because they have the privilege of watching him play 40 times a year.
I feel bad for Hall, he had never had good goaltending or defence behind him so they focus on him being the problem or not good enough defensively. Even if he isn’t, he is supposed to be the offensive star not defensive star.
The fact that both the Devils and Oilers lost Hall and Larsson for essentially nothing is the biggest L here. How do both team lose this trade eventually???
Yeah Hall might be the actual poster child for this parade of misery that the Sabres have been through recently if Eichel didn't exist. I was so confused when I heard that the first two moves that Kevyn Adams made as our GM were to grab Eric Staal and Taylor Hall. Staal at least made sense to fill in roster holes cheaply while the young talent developed (at least those that were actually willing to play for Buffalo) but Hall just made zero sense. I guess Eichel wanted him, and Eichel had far too much sway over the franchise during his time there with disastrous results.
As a Devils fans, I'll always be eternally grateful to Hall. Not only did he give us the most exciting season of any position player in Devils history, he brought back an absolute haul for a guy who was going to bolt anyways.

Buffalo did bad on the Hall trade due to he would only NMC to Boston the had better offer but he wouldn't move. Also the CBA hurt them because of them dropping the conditional on resigning clause. But with the Hall curse they got the first pick.
Correct!!
Is it too soon to get the Fleury-Hakkarainen trade tree?
the reason taylor hall scored 39 goals in 2017-18 is a swiss center named nico hischier btw
Glad to see Hall doing good at Boston
Taylor Hall wanting to be a winner and signing with buffalo is always going to be funny to me
Well the 8 Million was obvious why he came & Him & Eichel definitely was a recipe to win but eichel got hurt
That top 6 actually looked really really good.
On paper, that Buffalo team should have been damn good
Hall walks in 4 years and joins Seattle. Seattle becomes the biggest winner
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I mean today the Devils did ok….. Dawson Mercer looks awesome in the preseason. Kevin Bahl got a taste last year and looked OK, he probably won’t make the Devs this year out of camp but he could be the first guy up. Jaros will likely be the 7th D on the roster, and Sieganthaler will probably be a bottom pair guy this year.
The Devils have more to show for that trade than Edmonton will though. They lost Larsson for nothing to Seattle.
Taylor hall is the best acquisition we’ve had since Marchand easily
I'd like to see if the Rod Brind'Amour for Keith Primeau trade in 2000 is worth a tree. There were draft picks involved, so maybe it goes somewhere.
Do the Trevor Linden trade tree. It directly led the Canucks to pick Both Sedins and aquire Luongo. Plus there's the islanders side and Montreal side. I feel like this tree could be massive.
Dany Heatley trade tree?
What's the oldest trade tree you can find that is still active today?
Steve Dangle does not have the testicular fortitude to do the Trevor Linden trade tree
Hossa for Heatley!!
Please do Ron Francis to the Penguins... how often do you get to remind people that there was an NHL player named Zarley Zalapski???
For all the troubles that both of these guys have had, I would love to have both of them playing for my team. I'm sure that many fans would feel the same way.
Did you got to the game in Barry with Barry?
Larsson is the most under-rated defensemen in the NHL today. Seattle fans would agree, simply because they have the privilege of watching him play 40 times a year.
I’d quite like to see the Thrashers-Penguins Marian Hossa trade tree at some point
It’s already made. That trade was a part of the trade tree Steve made about the Thrashers a few weeks ago...
