Sometimes there are no losers, neither team was able to earn a cup through this trade, but both certainly had great runs. Personally I don't think the Weber side is done yet, and although Subbans stay was shorter with the Preds, they still got decent performance out of him, and traded him before the real injury issues kicked in.
If anyone in the NHL biz thinks that one or two trades will win them a cup, they should be fire immediately. Winning draft lottery helps, but you still need to create a team that backs it up. We all know the shady stuff Pitts "lucked" into. But everywhere else it shows, you need more than a few flashy players. We're in a bit of a dynasty era, where Pitts, Chi, now Tampa are the runaways. (Somehow Washington never got in on that) Beasts of the east run it, and will probably do so for a while. Playoffs are a different monster though, so MTL or OTT of 2017 can make huge runs, That's what's awesome about playoff hockey. Once you're in, all bets are off.
@@sdc363 NHL GM's just try and fill roles the best they can, you have to draft, trade and pick pieces off of other teams. There is just as much evidence to say that the Lottery win is not a viable way to a cup. You got to do it all, but sometimes a trade where both teams got what they wanted is a step in the right direction for both teams. You have to do everything almost perfectly and get some luck.
@@smaug1234 That's essentially what I was saying. It is possible too, that both teams can win a trade, depending on their current needs. Crosby was no normal draft pick, but having Malkin, Letang, Fleury etc. Made it all possible. However Edmonton squandering so many great players to be smashed come playoff time shows that it's not a done deal. McDavid is the best forward in the league, but the way the team is managed and coached they cannot break through, same with Toronto having a 40m $ powerplay is ridiculous, but they haven't won a playoff round with their makeup.
Well today Weber's contract is an LTIR cap helper for Vegas as having that traded really doesnt mean anything when its shown on a trade-tree so there's nothing to add to it.

Wasn't PK Close to having trade protection in his contract? I remember that being a big deal, that if Montreal waited any longer they wouldn't have been able to move him without his permission.

One of the things Montreal really wanted when trading for Weber was the intangible (e.g., leadership), and from most reports he delivered on that. Both teams got pretty solid results out of this (one trip to the Cup Final, neither got the big prize), and as Steve says, the new assets Nashville got in trade with New Jersey could yet turn out to compensate for the fact that Montreal got longer service out of Weber.
Though sadly, Nashville could not trade its way out of cap recapture danger, which still hangs over them.
Given how badly Subban’s play has fallen off subsequently, I don’t think he would have been a solution to that issue now.
@@curmudgeonaf I don't think they lost. They knew they were trading one kind of defenseman for another, and got basically what they wanted in the exchange. And since Subban fell off much faster than Weber (who basically played at level until he couldn't anymore), in retrospect they sold high on Subban.
The cap recapture might bite them hard soon

How about what is considered one of the most lopsided trades in NHL history? The Brett Hull trade between the Flames and the Blues. Blues got a face of the franchise, and the Flames won a cup in two years (though how much that trade helped is debatable). Also it's interesting how much the Flames trade with the Leafs after this.

The man is a beast on the ice and such a gentleman off the ice, I don't want to see him, or any player for that matter, retire due to injury
This Trade Tree is great, but you seriously need to go back and look at the Brendan Shanahan trade from the early 90's that had Brendan Shanahan traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Hartford Whalers. This tree eventually leads to the Blues drafting Jordan Binnington, who was another BIG reason why the Blues won the Stanley Cup in 2019. Thank me later!

The only way that you could say that the Habs won the trade is if you thought that it was Bergevin's plan to bring in Weber and be a mediocre team for 5 years. Poile acquired Subban to advance in the playoffs, and they did... Immediately.
And weber helped bring mtl to the finals too? Don't see what your point is. Subban was a net negative for mtl. Hot headed, more offensive than defense and mtl severely lacked In defense, and not a leader.
Weber was a leader, a more defensive player, and more disciplined.
Don't forget Weber PUTTING A HOLE THROUGH THE NET in the olympics!
That's not really as impressive as it sounds to be fair. As the only way that's really possible is that the puck hit a part of the net that already had a hole in it or was damaged by a skate blade or something and was about to break anyways.

As a Preds fan who saw Weber in his first game. I was mad to hear this deal at first. Then I got over it. Liked the hell outta Subban and Weber but we still miss both of those guys!

Plot twist: everybody lost! Both guy were never the same after they were traded... PK has been running all his life on confidence and it all went away when his childhood team trade him. Weber was one my favorite mean D since Chris Pronger and i was excited to see him in the bleu blanc rouge... but he never was the human mountain from Nashville, he kept it simple in MTL never got in trouble but his style doesnt age well in this new fast paced NHL and it showed this year vs Edmonton. Since Markov left we never had a real OFD to transition the puck and i think PK wouldve been more usefull to us. And i think the Preds playoff stretch the next year could've been different with the Leadership of a Weber in their line-up

PK being traded from Nashville gave the Predators the cap space to sign Duchene which should be considered as well.

Getting Subban for Weber was a great trade for Nashville. He helped them to the Playoffs and got them a great return when traded. Weber is an anchor. A mediocre player at best. Yeah Subban has fallen but still the better player over the time of the trade.

Yes Evgenii Dadonov does continue this trade tree, but also, the Nashville side of the tree also continues. With Luke Kunin getting traded to San Jose for John Leonard and a 2023 3rd round draft pick.
I've met PK and his dad separately. I ran the soundboard for Karl on a local stop during his book tour a couple years ago. Great family.

Those trade trees videos are really fun to watch. Maybe you should do the same with draft picks. You could revisit draft picks years later to see if the teams that picked them got it right or not.

Weber was probably the top defenseman on his team's SC run, Subban was either the third or fourth defenseman in his team.

Now this trade tree is longer because Montreal traded shea weber to Vegas for evgenii dadonov who they then traded to Dallas for denis gurianov. Both of them only played half a season with Montreal.

Since you brought up Hornqvist, let's do one for the time the Preds trade Hornqvist for James Neal, and then Hornqvist gets the game winner for Pittsburgh AGAINST Nashville. I was always skeptical of that trade, since they were similar in my opinion, but Hornqvist a little cheaper and better net front presence. Also, the Preds left Neal exposed for the expansion draft, while the Stanley Cup Champs protected Hornqvist. That told me who won that trade right there.
Now Weber’s gone and we have Dadanov. The tree lives on👏

I dunno - the difference between Weber "taking the Habs to the Finals" and Subban "taking the Preds to the Finals" is not insubstantial (noting that neither player "took" their respective team to the Finals...they had a role, but it's a team effort, and it is important to separate out what the individual contributed to it). The Predators had a formidable defensive corps that year (and over a longer period centered on that year). They had Josi, Ekholm, AND Ellis, in addition to Subban. And yes, Subban had 2 goals and 10 assists in that playoffs, but Josi had 6 goals, 8 assists, Ellis had 5 goals and 8 assists, and Ekholm had 1 goal and 10 assists. So 12 of the 14 goals scored by their top 4 (actually, their whole defense; Matt Irwin and Yannick Weber chipped in 3 assists, but no goals) were not scored by Subban (Subban scored 10 of 39 assists by the top 4). So an argument could be made that Subban was Nashville's 3rd-best offensive defenseman that year (and probably their 3rd-best on defensive assignments as well). If Shea Weber had been a member of the Preds in the 2016-17 season, I think they would have done maybe a bit better than they made out with Subban; Weber that year with the Habs was absolutely TERRIFYING.
Now, let's compare 2020-21 P.K. Subban and 2020-21 Shea Weber. Because that's what this is all about - if this trade never happened, what would the two teams' fates be? And there is little doubt in my mind that there is currently almost no difference between the two. Offensively, they are quite similar now, while defensively, I give the edge to Weber. So the trade helped Montreal more than it did Nashville in the first couple years afterwards, and right now, it's a wash between Montreal and New Jersey. And Nashville...Kunin's been great, and the prospects are still developing...but Montreal did a lot with Weber this year, and Nashville got decidedly less out of its return for Subban. Thus...the edge has to go to the Habs, if for no other reason than Nashville might have hoisted the Cup in 2017 if the trade hadn't happened (Subban was good that year, but Weber was better). Just my opinion.
How about a trade tree involving Jaromir Jagr from Pittsburgh, to the Caps. Eventually, it'll involve several teams, some conditional picks, future considerations, and Anson Carter.

You forgot that one of the main reasons why the Preds opted to trade PK was to create cap space to sign Matt Duchene. He was basically a return in that trade. Great move at the time, however, Duchene's deal is not as good as Preds fans were hoping
They both won it and lost it at the same time only difference between both sides is one kept the player they traded they both got finals appearances out of the trade

with weber seriously injured and might not not be back at all. Nashville won the trade. One thing i always asked myself if weber was that good why did nashville traded him and i had my answer after the first year weber played for canadian he had an knee operation witch he had that knee problem since he was in nashville . Nashville saw the oportunity to trade him before it was too late for a younger guy and still get s the benifits of that trade . while weber was the center piece of canadian deffence and the capitan now canadian are praying that weber wont retired.
Personally I'd say its a tie, mainly because the Preds went to a SCF with PK and the Habs also went to a SCF with Webber. Maybe give the slight edge to the Habs, since the leadership from Weber was irreplaceable for their youngsters and PK kinda fell off a cliff soon after their SCF run.

Love how this was made in 2021 and multiple times in the video, attention is drawn to Weber calling it quits. Fast forward three years to 2024, and Weber is still active, but Subban retired the year after this was posted 😭
The Preds won the trade. Got the better player (and available player) from day 1 until PK was traded for more assets.

Traded Hornqvist for James Neal. I was not a fan of that trade. After the Cup run, the Preds left Neal exposed and Vegas took him. The Pens protected Hornqvist.

I honestly believe Nashville's run was more about Pekka Rine being too good and it would've happened with or without this trade.
I think there's a lot more to be informed about concerning Weber's deal. It appears to have been a convoluted and complicated affair and needs more discussion. Always enjoy these trade trees. Thanks

Hey Steve! I just wanted to say that I find it very cool that you use sign language at the end of all your videos. I am not deaf myself, but am physically disabled. I often find people do not do such things unless they have a personal connection to it. Is that true in your case as well?
PK is a very good player but he can't get out of his own way... Remember when he got into it with Crosby about his breath... he was a distraction to his team. Still love the guy and he is a really good person but I thought it was important to mention. Also, Both players have had to deal with injuries the last few seasons, I also think that it is important to mention this little fact. I think both teams got some good out of this trade. Good stuff as always, love the trade trees, keep them coming.

I remember when Philly gave the offer sheet to Weber, I was pissed for Predz fans. Another reason for me to hate Philly. Little did I know he'd play for the Habs afterwards!
Side note: I called that trade to a friend before it happened. "Would you trade, say, Subban for Weber, change for change?" he laughed saying "What the hell this isn't NHL '15 cmon!!" well, whaddya know!

Clear easy win for Montreal, both teams had about the same success, but Weber was a much more important part of it and was for years. Do I need to remind folks Nashville got rid of PK for second picks? Thats it! The devils didn't even protect PK against Seattle because everybody know, he is not worth it, not even half of his contract. He used to be, but he broke very quickly after the first year in Nashville. Weber was useful for Montreal all this time, only now he probably gonna retire (and Nashville gonna have to pay for it, not Montreal so it's double win for the habs lol!).
Basically, Bergevin traded PK when he had only one year left in the tank, pretty good move, GM of the year.
Subban was heading past his prime in that trade. Nashville retained no salary in that.

Initially I thought Nashville straight up ripped off Montreal - not fleeced - but stole PK from the Habs, BUT as time passed I really don't know what happened to PK.. I mean PK was obviously younger was far more mobile and still had lots of potential left er room to grow where Weber had that contract and he was on the wrong side of 30.. I mean this trade really did shock me, but hey Weber's been Shay Weber in Montreal and the last few seasons haven't been the best for PK and he's bounced around like a pinball since leaving Montreal..

Do the Trevor Linden trade tree. It directly led the Canucks to pick Both Sedins and aquire Luongo plus more . Plus there's the islanders side and Montreal side. I feel like this tree could be massive.
How did the Flyers get away with tampering with that Shea Weber offer sheet. Yes, the Predators matched it, but the terms were ludicrous, even for today's standards. The Flyers should have been sanctioned, cause now there is incentive for other teams to try and tamper with another team's cap, even if they fail. I kind of fear which team will try and tamper with the Canucks with Elias Petterson and Quinn Hughes needing new contracts soon.
Taking requests? Paul Coffey from the Oilers to the Penguins. First big trade of the 80s Oilers, and there’s a ton of moving parts to that one.
I think Shea will be traded back to Nashville(for cap hit) to retreat immediatly and them come back to Mtl with management(scout, coaching or anything).
