Watching this 2 years later, Thompson has been amazing and I think it was worth it for Buffalo
True
Yep!
As a Leafs fan (and the fact that we now have ROR), it's good to see Thompson develop well in BUF.
was gonna comment this - monster season this year for thompson
As an Avs/Kraken fan - Thompson is incredible. I hope he drags the Sabres kicking and screaming to a few playoff runs over the next few seasons. They need it, desperately
I literally said "Oh, hell no" when I saw the title, yet still clicked and watched the entire video. Pain.
I liked the trade back in the time :) biggest Sabers fan from Czech rep. here.
Melody, I think you just described every Sabres game too…
I’m not even a Sabres fan and I feel your pain
Just don't look at the comments
That’s tough. Sabers fans are the real fans
Couple notes: Saad is now a teammate of ROR and O’Reilly is now the captain of the Blues
let's go blues!
Saad with his first goal as a Blue the other night as well.
Couple of notes: Tage Thompson is a 30 plus goal scorer for the sabres so I would say we got a great player out of it!!!
@@derrickb2398 and Colorado just won a cup... Maybe nobody lost this trade completely.
@@derrickb2398 Blues fan here. Absolutely thrilled for Tage.
The clear winner is Ryan O'Reilly for getting the hell out of Buffalo.
And the blues
I still remember my initial reaction to the news was, why would such a great player choose to go to the Sabers instead of staying with the avs (I was only a casual fan at the time and don't really know a lot about how trade a salary caps work).
You hit the nail on the head because buffalo isn"t worth a damm and no one wants to play with them!!!!!!
@@ariesram1890 the players we have right now wanna play.
@@ariesram1890 Buffalo has always been a market that a lot of players love playing in just shows how much you know about hockey
Revisit June 2022, Tage Thomson comes off a 38 goal 68 pt season. Makes it sting a little less.
Thankfully, yes. That trade will still haunt Buffalo sports regardless, but Tage seemingly coming into his own this past season does take a bit of the edge off that shitshow. For what feels like the first time in a century I'm actually looking forward to a Sabres season, and seeing whether Tage can maintain this trajectory is a big part of that.
The year ROR lost his love for the game he SET THE RECORD FOR MOST FACEOFF WINS IN NHL HISTORY
On an absolutely putrid team too
I honestly can't think of a less significant record to set.
@@MJXtube fr
@@MJXtube fair, but league leader in +/-?
@@MJXtube wtf, how?
Blues fan here. Regardless of who ends up "winning" in this trade, getting ROR in 2018 was the best thing to ever happen to the Blues.
Blues fan as well, I'm still upset that Dangle hasn't covered how the Shanahan for Pronger 1 for 1 trade led to the Blues Stanley Cup victory.
Bleed blue here.. agreed.
@@Dr.Frankensteen Agreed, but he really should start that saga with the original Scott Stevens signing. Stevens costing them 5 first round picks, then being lost for Shanahan; Shanahan sleeping with the Captain's wife resulting in him getting traded for Pronger, the lockout resulting in the owners demanding Blues GM not even give Pronger a qualifying offer to keep payroll low until they could sell, GM convincing them to let him QO & trade Pronger instead, turning Pronger into Brewer, Brewer into a third round pick... Blues turned 5 first round picks into 1 third round pick, with a hell of a lot of heartbreak along the way... then the third round pick wins them the Cup. It might be the most insane trade through line in the NHL.
@@ncc1295 But that wasn't a trade though. I get the sentiment but not a trade technically speaking even if it was unofficially.
And it was Craig Janney's wife, not Brett Hull who was the captain at the time.
@@Dr.Frankensteen Ah, you are right it was Janney's wife, my bad. You are wrong however about it not being a trade. It's page 8 of the CBA where the definition of "trade" is spelled out, and RFA compensations are 100%, technically speaking, trades.
This Blues Trade Tree is great, but you seriously need to go back and look at the Brendan Shanahan trade from the early 90's that had Brendan Shanahan traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Hartford Whalers. This tree eventually leads to the Blues drafting Jordan Binnington, who was another BIG reason why the Blues won the Stanley Cup in 2019. Thank me later!
Chris Pronger is involved in this deal as well ^^^
@@BluesFanReacts there's about 4 or 5 Hall of Famers involved in this deal, it's actually pretty nuts and it's technically still going!
Honestly its hard to find a true winner in this tree cause there are I believe something like 5 or 6 cups that came out of trades in this tree between the Blues, Whalers ( now Hurricanes), and Red Wings.
It also involves Scott Stevens
@@IHateMyAccountName technically no, Brendan Shanahan was signed via offer sheet by the Blues and the Devils were awarded Scott Stevens as compensation BEFORE this trade occurred. So because of this, Scott Stevens is not technically involved in this trade tree, but still a fun story of how the Devils acquired one of the most important players in Devils history.

Berglund walking away from 13 million should tell you all you need to know about the toxicity of hockey in Buffalo.
I think even Berglund would blame his mental health issues first over Buffalo. Although, they may very well have exacerbated his depression.
My favorite trade tree ever. ROR to the blues which led to a Cup, Selke and Comn Smyth for ROR who is now the Captain. Also, Saad is now a Blue too. The Blues could win both sides of this trade tree

Woooooh! A video on the Blues! Thank you Steve and producer Drew
I don't even think producer Drew or Freelance Editor Tom are real people.
On the day the trade happened, Buffalo won. Ever since, though, this has been a big W for Colorado.
Agreed. Losing O’Reilly hurt, but Zadorov and Compher gave (and continue to give) us some damn fine hockey.
Yep, I love JTC and fully expect him to bounce back this year and Zadorov was honestly the first step to solidifying that d core. Despite Zadorovs weaknesses he was key to our emergence a few years ago
@@RIPJimmyA7X like he says in the video, teams need players to be a team, and these guys have absolutely been key to the growth
And even bigger W for St. Louis.
And it indirectly gave one of their biggest rivals their 1st Stanley Cup.
Jeremy Roy was a stellar defensive prospect that had injuries completely stop his career. could have been a great pick but we will never know
Quick update to Tage Thompson. The last season (21-22) he found his stride. In 78 games he had 38 goals and 30 assists for 68 points. NICE.
almost real nice
@@bipity-bob really really nice
Compher might not be hugely important in the Avs roster, but you could kinda say that trade also led to their cup
JT Compher is a phenomenal player for the Avs. I was at game 6 vs the sharks in 2019 and that dude BALLED out that night. He drew ALL the attention from EVERYONE in that building every time he stepped on the ice. And last night vs the blackhawks he was centering the 2 youngsters newhook and Raanta. He’s totally underrated great guy to have on your 4th line
Crazy looking back at this now only a little bit into the season and seeing how much Tage Thompson had developed only in the last year
He's looking pretty good
I still remember the exact moment the Blues got O’Reilly. I FREAKED out because I knew instantly we were going to win that trade. The Blues and fans needed ROR and he needed the Blues💙 our Captain we trust
Ngl, I didnt like the trade. I didnt hate it either, but I loved sabotka and saw a big future in Thompson. I was thrilled to finally get rid of the super streaky berglund. The price was heavy, but it was all worth eating my words!
Enjoy your way over paid selfish player.... Ror...wanted out of Colorado because he felt he deserved captain and at the time wanted more money than the avs best player.... last playoffs should have you worried.... ror couldn't hang with MacKinnon and his plus minus showed that.... hes like a 5 million dollar player not an 8 plus.... not to mention the dude held out playing....

@@bonkz2624 not salty at all.... dudes a chump
Tage has actually been looking pretty good hopefully that keeps up
I’m surprised that Steve didn’t mention the turmoil that was Ryan O’Reilly’s last years with Colorado.
Agreed..... like not playing....
His dad was the main problem
AVS wasted his talent. The situation was complicated. People liked Duchene because he was given a lot of time on ice and all the PP's, while O'Reilly was stuck on the 3rd line and playing all the PK's. Look at the statistics when O'Reilly was given proper ice time in top6. Also, O'Reilly is much better defensively. Still, at that time you will have to trade Duchene or Stastny and that will not go well in Colorado. O'Reilly is 865games 222g 398a 619pts +9, (plus all the awards)
Where Duchene is 834 games 253g 354a 607 -104.
Berglund also fired his agent for not filing the NTC-list of teams on time (Buffalo was on it, according to what Berglund said to Swedish media) - and he's still playing in the SHL, so he clearly was just not going to play in Buffalo regardless of the money.
It worked out better for Buffalo. Berglund was on a massively overpaid contact. The Blues would have taken nothing in return to get rid of that contract.
On the Tage Thompson front, he was moved to center this year and is actually playing pretty well. So, maybe he's not a complete bust. Possibly a career 2nd or 3rd center when all is said and done.
As a Blues fan, all I can say is: Oh Captain, My Captain!
The Blues essentially gave up their 3rd line from the previous season to get O'Reilly. As a Blues fan, I was thrilled that Doug Armstrong pulled off this deal. O'Reilly has been everything the Blues could have hoped for both on and off the ice.
And then the cup 3rd line was Thomas-Bozak-Maroon. 2 cheap free agents and a team drafted player.
Mannn the buzz in the air in st.Louis that post season was so special … they say you’ll never forget your first cup celebration!
I was so sad when the Avs got rid of O'Reilly. The story was that he wanted more money than Duchy was making to re-sign, and they weren't gonna do that for fear of insulting their star player (and probably some other cap issues at the time). Looking back, I think it's no question that ROR has had a much bigger impact for his teams in the NHL than Duchene, and I would love it if the Avs still had him. I do love me some JT Compher though, and didn't realize this is how the Avs got him.
Not to mention O’Reilly is now the captain!
I’m a Sabres fan…Thompson has panned out since this was made. Buffalo is a tough market and need players who want to play there. Thompson has shown he wants that.
You need hockey players for your hockey team? Tell that the coyotes!
What a difference a year makes. That trade getting Tage Thompson back... not that bad
Love these, keep up the hard work. I'll keep up my hard work by continuing to be a Die-Hard Sabres fan!
The 1st they got from the blues is the same number as the 2nd they gave up to get o rielly
Hey the Craig Rivet trade involves the Sabres. Can we do that one?
Resulted in the Habs getting Suzuki lmao
A very interesting trade tree
@@SciyonGenysis I’ve actually dug into it myself. It involves Andrew Shaw, Alex Debrincat and, with a bit of stretching, Jake Allen as well
@@Jame5man yup habs 2nd rounder that turned into Debrincat and also results in WSH acquiring Kovalchuck
It’s possible for more than one team to win a trade. Blues definitely won. One Stanley Cup for a franchise that had never won in 50+ years is worth any trade. As a Blues fan I say that with certainty. I said (before they won) that IF they got a Cup they could go winless for five straight years and that’s ok. I got what I wanted (and won a $40 bet in Vegas that paid $1600) so yeah I’m good.
Thompson could still make Buffalo a winner, and given your comments about how O’Reilly lost his love of the game I would love to see someone thrive in Buffalo. Also since you said how the trade is still evolving I’d love to hear when this one is updated (when Buffalo is relevant).
Hope you’re enjoying O’Reilly. I miss him in STL, and I’m watching more Leafs streams with you because of (your passion) and the desire to see STL’s first Conn Smythe winner succeed.
Enjoy the ride. However far it takes Toronto. I am signing “thank you” as I post this. Thank you for your passion, your love of the game, and everything you do to promote the greatest game on Earth.
Thanks for ROR, actually he's performed as advertised. Even the LTIR didn't faze him. We know how great he was there and how revitalized the love of hockey in STL and now enjoying it with the Leafs.
This one should go way back…as in back to when Rick Martin was traded to Los Angeles in March 1981, with LA hoping Martin’s knees would cooperate. ROR sprouted a new branch from that trade tree.
Several Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers in that trade tree
Just a note. Patrik Berglund retired from the NHL but he has since played in the SHL. So he continued to play Hockey
*Steve dangle saying as of now he hasn’t performed well*
Me watching this after Thompson 68 points in 78 games: Soon, Steve dangle. Soon
Well Steve was spot on in his assessment of Tage Thompson by saying "There is lots of career left for him to play" 13:40
I'm I the only Avs fan that wants to see what producer Drew looks like, or if he is a real person?
Just Google Drew Livingstone, his face is online.
@@Waders27 Cool thanks
You should do the Craig Rivet/Josh Georges trade tree! It's really interesting and lots of great players are involved
As a Blues fan, this trade tree is the best sequence of trading ever made in the NHL. We got a Cup because of it, and Ryan helped end our misery in a big way. Thank you Colorado (never thought I'd say that) and Buffalo for making these trades.
Tage Thompson's 38 goals this past season make this trade a lot more even nowadays, I'd think, no?
Life long Sabres fan here. These trades were a big factor in how "hockey heaven" that they tried to create in Buffalo has turned into hockey hell.
You missed the part of the trade tree where O'Riley traded his trucks front end for the wall of a Tim Hortons
@ 15:15 this and every Blues fan were rolling! 🤣🤣
Would be nice to have a rerun of this with the season Thompson just had.
Tage Thompson nearly scored 40 goals this year on a poorly-performing team. Ryan O'Reilly's career best is 28. (Thompson also scored more goals in a season than Jack Eichel. But that's not really pertinent. Just wanted to point it out.)
Only saying that this trade still has the possibility of paying off for both sides. Just took a little longer for the Sabres to see the ROI.
Saad and o’reilly are now teammates 😂 #goblues

Dude, I've been waiting for this tree!
We Stan Tage Thompson our big awkward forward
He just needs a trainer to get jacked like Eric Lindros.
As a Blues fan, hearing analysis of this trade makes me SO happy. Ryan O’Reilly is a beast. But that team that won the cup was a full team with lots of depth. O’Rei is a solid leader, though, and he’s a pretty awesome coach for the younger guys
One trade tree (although it really isn't) that is still going was Scott Stevens going from the Capitals to the Blues in 1990. Stevens signed with the Blues, and the Blues sent the Capitals FIVE 1st rounders from 1991 to 1995 as compensation. Both sides of that "tree" are still active.
A Blues fan for 40+ years and a Sabres fan for 35+ years I got both edges of the sword here. ROR got one of my teams a Cup at the expense of setting the other back a decade. The irony is Saad signed a few weeks ago with the Blues for next season.
I was hoping very much for Steve to mention that Roy plays for HKM Zvolen in the slovak league since that is my team :,(
I really like the positivity you have when you're talking about any team that is not the Leafs.
JTC is a very important piece now for depth scoring, especially after losing Saad and donskoi.
Yes but hes no Saad or Donskoi. Sadly.
@@Reudze no but if he bounces back this season I could see 40 points from him and that could go along way
Well looks like tage Thompson finally showed up for this deal.....we'll see how he does after signing his monster deal
Still waiting for the Trevor Linden tree to NYI. It is long, epic, and contains potential hall of fame players
This turns out to be an almost perfect win-win. No Blues fans would trade their cup and the Sabres are perfectly happy today with Thompson. A rare win-win
I’m here after Tage Thompson is on pace for 110+ points
2 years later, this tree is amazing for the sabres. Tage thompson is one of the best player in the league with one of the best contract in the league
That 2009 draft really did pay for like half of the Avs’ 2022 Cup win.
Anyone else here after Tage Thompson's 6 point night?
It's starting to look a little better now for Buffalo, Tage is starting to come into his own.
This is the trade tree I've been waiting for you to do ,Steve, so thanks for this.....All I know is the Sabres got hosed on the deal with the Blues--the Blues got a Stanley Cup and the Sabres got a bag of pucks.
Ryan O'Reilly is actually a branch on a still going after forty years trade tree for the Sabres starting with the Rick Martin trade. If you haven't done that one yet, you should look into it. It would be a two hour long video with several Hall of Famers included
I think we need a part 2 to this trade tree going down the buffalo/STL rabbit hole in a few years
This video is gonna have a huge update down the line because the O'Reilly trade to Toronto has 3 teams, 4 players, and 4 draft picks.
I remember back in January 2019 thinking what a disaster the Blues were giving up what was looking like a top 5 draft pick, and a bunch of other players and the 2nd rounder. Then the Blues miraculously won the Stanley Cup with O'Reilly being the playoff MVP. And the draft pick only being the last pick of the 1st round. And now it's quite possibly the best trade the Blues ever made. Thank you Sabres and Avalanche.
coming back to this in february 2023, tage thompson has become a goal scoring god
Surprised he called what Patrik Berglund did "retiring". He got injured and just flat out refused to return to Buffalo afterwards, so they voided his contract. In fact, he now plays hockey in the SHL, so that's very much not retired.
Tage Thompson suddenly looks pretty good, huh
I love how this video was recorded just before Tage Thompson went from underperforming first rounder to genuine superstar overnight.
Watching this video after Tage Thompson had a ridiculous season. I'm a Blues fan and was sad to see him go, since you could see him developing slowly into what he was in 2021-22. I am absolutely more than satisfied with the return O'Reilly has provided, though. On the ice, he's fantastic, but seems like a dang good guy, too.
This trade tree gave a cup to the Blues, it might have played into Colorado's cup and it gave Tage Thompson to the Sabers who's breaking the league in half as off now
Thompson is having a good season so far!
Tage Thompson might turn out to be pretty good in the end, so at least there's that
For those who want it continued, I think we might need a separate trade tree, for when ROR was traded to STL for the pieces concerned, then put a branch putting the Leafs trade for ROR.
Every July 1st, all blues fans find the Trade tweet from buffal and thank them for the cup that came 11 months later. And troll TF out of Sabres fans that said "we won the trade". Because of gettin ROR, i cried like a baby on June 12, 2019 at 9:45pm CST...watching my beloved Blues lift that cup.
We need this updated fast. Tnt is a beast
Tage Thompson had a breakout season this past year... so I guess this trade isn't looking as bad on Buffalo's end as of now.
As a sabres fan we sit here cry and watch the bills haha
Bergland's retiring broke my heart for the kid. So much potential, he just never kept it consistent. And Saboka, he was having trouble even coming to play for the Blues at the end there. I think he came back just to finish out his contract and to get traded...which ended up to Buffalo which sucked so easy out.
Coming back to this in 2022 Tage Thompson finished the season leading tue Buffalo sabers in points with 38 goals and 68 points in 78 games (maybe it wasn’t so bad for them after all)
REVISE STEVE, REVISE!!!! WE’RE NOT DONE!!
I’m an Avs fanboy. I’m still waiting to get another cup..I remember the other 2 fondly..
13:45 Have times changed since this trade tree video
I’m a Sabres fan and it’s easy to forget on this one, halfway through the season the Blues were dead last and that first round pick was looking like a really good part of the deal … then the Blues brought up this fulla called Binnington. Without that move unrelated to this tree, this trade probably would never look so bad
If you want to split hairs, the 2nd that Vegas got for Colin Miller was actually flipped along with another 2nd when they acquired Alec Martinez. That same pick was dealt again as a draft move to Ottawa, who is the team that drafted Ben Roger.
Have you seen Tage Thompson lately Bro? 4 goals in last few games.
Thompson: ...and I took that personally
Ryan Johnson is going to be a beauty for Buffalo. Man is a beast here in minny
